Desertification and eutrophication are two global environmental problems human beings face. Inoculating cyanobacteria to form biocrusts is considered an effective technology to inhibit desertification. The main limitation of biocrust formation is the lack of propagules and nutrients in deserts. A possible low cost source of propagules and nutrients is eutrophic water containing aquatic cyanobacteria (AC), nitrogen and phosphorus. In this study, we fabricated a network-structured nanocomposite (designated as MC) using a metal-organic framework (MOF) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). MC, with a large specific surface area and numerous surface groups, had a high retention capacity for water and nutrients and good biosafety. The combination of AC-containing water (ACW) and MC could provide a suitable microenvironment in the soil, promote the growth of desert cyanobacteria (DC), formation of biocrusts and inhibition of desertification. This study provides a novel approach to simultaneously relieve desertification and eutrophication.
Desertification and water body eutrophication are two severe environmental problems worldwide. To alleviate these two problems simultaneously, a new idea, introducing aquatic cyanobacteria (AC) from Lake Chaohu to the surface of the Tengger Desert to encourage the growth of biological soil crusts, was proposed. A network-structured nanocomposite (SXA) consisting of sodium polyacrylate (SP), xanthan gum (XG), and attapulgite (ATP) was also fabricated. The SXA showed high water-retention ability, viscosity, and biosafety and could provide a suitable microenvironment for AC and desert cyanobacteria (DC) growth. It was found that the combination of AC and SXA effectively increased sand nutrient levels, facilitating the growth of DC and biological soil crusts. Importantly, the resultant biological soil crusts maintained stability for at least 210 days and played a key role in stabilizing the sand surface. Therefore, this work provides a novel technology not only for desert immobilization but also for the utilization of aquatic blooms.

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is emerging as a promising strategy to produce fresh water from abundant airborne moisture to reduce the global clean water shortage. Hydrogels are considered attractive adsorbents due to their higher water retention and tunable polymer-water interactions. Here, we report the super hygroscopic polymer material (SHPMs) using modified NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) as a functional crosslinker by copolymerization with acrylic acid and 2-Acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, achieving a water uptake of about 28.8–49.7 mg/g at 28–38 % RH. The material can desorption quickly under sunlight, and the desorbed water can be stored in a polymer skeleton for use by vegetation or crops during periods of water demand. Besides, the Water retention and storage performance and its outdoor experiment also proved that the application of this material in agriculture, forestry and desertification control laid the foundation to improve the effective availability of soil moisture and water harvesting and conservation. With its excellent water retention and atmospheric water harvesting performance, the material offers a sustainable method for rapid water extraction in arid climates.
