Study on enhanced degradation of atrazine by ozonation in the presence of hydroxylamine

Jingxin Yang,Ji Li,Wenyi Dong,Jun Ma,Jie Cao,Tingting Li,Jiayin Li,Jia Gu,Pingxin Liu

Degradation of atrazine (ATZ) by ozonation in the presence of hydroxylamine (HA) was experimentally investigated in this study. The results showed approximately 80% of ATZ was degraded by ozonation in the presence of HA, while only 20% was degraded by ozonation alone. The obvious inhibition of the ATZ degradation by tert -butanol suggested the enhanced ATZ degradation by ozone/HA was primarily attributed to OH. The OH yield was determined to be 25.8%. Additionally, the optimum HA dosage for the ATZ degradation was 4   μM, when the ozone dosage was 20   μM. The effects of pH, bicarbonate and temperature on ATZ degradation by ozone/HA were investigated in details. Most importantly, the enhanced ATZ degradation by ozonation in the presence of HA was still observed in real water especially at acidic pHs. Furthermore, the potential mechanism of OH formation during the reaction of ozone with HA was proposed herein. Nine products were identified by UPLC/Q-TOF-MS system. The ATZ degradation involved dealkylation, dechlorination-hydroxylation and olefination. The evolutions of the concentrations of three available transformation products including deethylatrazine, deisopropylatrazine and deethyldeisopropylatrazine in ozone/HA were evaluated and compared with that in ozonation alone.

The influence of vermicompost on atrazine microbial degradation performance and pathway in black soil, Northeast China

Xia Hou,Yang Ou,Xinhong Wang,Huiping Liu,Lei Cheng,Liming Yan

The atrazine (ATR) is extensively used in dryland crops like corn and sorghum in black soil region of Northeast China, posing ecological risks due to toxic metabolites. Vermicompost are known for soil organic pollution remediation but their role in pesticide degradation in black soil remains understudied. The influence of vermicompost on the microbial degradation pathway of atrazine was assessed in this study. Although vermicompost didn't significantly boost atrazine removal, they notably aided in primary metabolite degradation, hydroxyatrazine (HYA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA), and deethylatrazine (DEA), reducing their content by 38.67 %. They also altered the soil microbial community structure, favoring atrazine-degrading bacteria like Proteobacteria , Firmicutes , and Actinobacteria . Five secondary degradation products were identified in vermicompost treatments. Atrazine degradation occurred via dechlorination, dealkylation, and deamination pathways mainly by Nocardioidacea , Streptomycetaceae , Bacillaceae , Sphingomonadaceae , Comamonadaceae and Nitrososphaeraceae . pH and available nitrogen (AN) influenced microbial community structure and atrazine degradation, correlating with vermicompost application rates. Future black soil remediation should optimize application rates based on atrazine content and soil properties.

Effective immobilization of tyrosinase via enzyme catalytic polymerization of l-DOPA for highly sensitive phenol and atrazine sensing

Yun Guan,Lanjunzi Liu,Chao Chen,Xiuzhi Kang,Qingji Xie

The facile preparation of poly( l -DOPA)-tyrosinase (PD M -Tyr) composite and its application both in substrate (phenol) and inhibitor (atrazine) sensing is reported here for the first time. Effective immobilization of enzyme is realized via in-situ entrapping Tyr in poly( l -DOPA) (PD M ), which is formed by Tyr catalytic polymerization of l -DOPA. The Tyr modified electrode is simply prepared by dipping the PD M -Tyr composite on an Au electrode and then covered by Nafion. The thus-prepared Tyr-immobilized electrode exhibits excellent performance superior to most Tyr-based electrochemical biosensors, the sensitivity to phenol is as high as 5122 μA mM −1 in the linear range of 10   nM~1.25 μM, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant ( K M app ) determined as low as 3.13   μM indicates strong substrate binding and high catalytic activity of the immobilized Tyr. The biosensor also works well in atrazine biosensing, with a linear detection range of 50   ppb~30   ppm and a low detection limit of 10   ppb obtained. In addition, the biosensor shows excellent stability, precision, high sensitivity and fabrication simplicity.

Intermediate accumulation and toxicity reduction during the selective photoelectrochemical process of atrazine in complex water bodies

Baoling Niu,Junzhuo Cai,Wenjing Song,Guohua Zhao

Selective removal of atrazine (ATZ) in wastewater and clarification of the degradation intermediate-toxicity correlation are of great importance. A newly molecularly imprinted, {001} facets-exposed TiO 2 (MI-TiO 2,001 ) photoanode with strong catalytic and selective ability was designed. ATZ was selectively removed from pesticide wastewater, reaching 1.9 µg L −1 , approximately 1/10 of the concentration achieved with nonselective treatment. This selective removal originated from the preferential adsorption and enrichment of ATZ onto MI-TiO 2,001 . The highly specific recognition relied on the halogen bond and strong hydrogen bond formed between the Cl atom and triazine ring π orbital of ATZ and the surface -OH group of MI-TiO 2,001 as well as the recognition of MI-TiO 2,001 to the shape and size of ATZ. The specific interaction leads to different accumulations of intermediates. The correlation of intermediate and toxicity was also discussed. Aquatic toxicity was rapidly reduced through the direct dealkylation path, and due to the accumulation of highly toxic 2‑hydroxy-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine, there will be transient fluctuations via the dechlorination-hydroxylation path first. The final product was identified as nearly nontoxic cyanuric acid, the selective accumulation of which indicated that there was almost 100% removal of aquatic toxicity and cytotoxicity with only 9.8% removal of total organic carbon. This work provides new insight into the correlation of pollutant degradation intermediates and changes in toxicity.

Removal of atrazine from submerged soil using vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides L.)

Faming Zhang,Jiansong Peng,Yuhong Rong,Shixian Sun,Yi Zheng

The long-term widespread application of atrazine poses significant threats to the eco-environment and human health. To investigate the potential of vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides L.) for phytoremediation of the environmental media contaminated by atrazine, an indoor incubation experiment was conducted in submerged soil over 30 days. Results showed that the chlorophyll level of the vetiver was not significantly affected by exposure to atrazine. Vetiver could take up and accumulate atrazine from submerged soil and peaked around the 20th day with a concentration of 1.0 mg kg−1 in leaf. The metabolites Hydroxyatrazine (HA), deethylatrazine (DEA), Deisopropylatrazine (DIA), and didealkylatrazine (DDA) were detected in the leaf on the 30th day, indicating vetiver could degrade atrazine inside the leaf tissue. The atrazine removal rate in the vetiver planted and unplanted jars were 69.72 and 60.29%, respectively, indicating that 9.43% higher atrazine removal was achieved in the presence of vetiver (p < 0.05). The atrazine dissipation in the submerged soil followed first-order kinetics, the degradation constant was 0.066, and the half-life of atrazine dissipation was shortened by 6.86 days in the presence of vetiver. The present study suggests that vetiver can take up atrazine from submerged soil and accumulate in the leaf, which could then degrade in the leaf.Novelty statement: Although the fate of atrazine in agricultural soils has been extensively investigated through various experiments, little is known about the effect of vetiver grass on atrazine dissipation from submerged soil. With the identification of soil-leaf transportation and four metabolites in vetiver leaf and soils, significantly accelerated atrazine dissipation from the submerged soil was achieved in the presence of vetiver. Particularly, the formation of less toxic dealkylated products in the leaf indicated vetiver is a promising grass for atrazine removal from submerged soil.

Heat-activated persulfate oxidation of atrazine: Implications for remediation of groundwater contaminated by herbicides

Yuefei Ji,Changxun Dong,Deyang Kong,Junhe Lu,Quansuo Zhou

Contamination of herbicides such as atrazine (ATZ) poses a significant threat to human health and aquatic ecosystem. In this study, we demonstrated that heat-activated persulfate could effectively degrade ATZ in water. Complete disappearance of 50   μM ATZ could be obtained after 2   h reaction in the presence of 1   mM persulfate under 60   °C. Increasing the initial persulfate concentration or temperature significantly enhanced the degradation efficiency. Natural organic matter (NOM) decreased the degradation rate, but complete removal of ATZ could still be obtained. The presence of chloride (Cl − ) and bicarbonate (HCO 3 − ) had little effects on ATZ degradation at lower concentration (e.g., 5   mM). However, inhibitory effects were observed when concentrations of Cl − and HCO 3 − increased (e.g., 100   mM). Radical scavenging test revealed that sulfate radical (SO 4 − ) was the predominant radical species at acidic to neutral pH, while hydroxyl radical (HO ) was predominant at basic pH. Eight intermediates and products were identified by applying solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-LC–MS/MS) techniques. Transformation pathways including dealkylation, alkyl chain oxidation, and dechlorination–hydroxylation were proposed, and the underlying mechanisms for each pathway were systematically analyzed.

Mechanism and Kinetic Analysis of the Degradation of Atrazine by O3/H2O2

Yixin Lu,Chenghan Tang,Yujie Liu,Jiao Chen

In phosphate buffer, the degradation of ATZ by ozone/(O3/H2O2) under various circumstance was explored and the degradation mechanism and dynamics were probed. The findings revealed that when maintaining the reaction temperature at 25 °C, the H2O2concentration and the O3concentration were 20 mol/L and 20 mol/L, respectively. Moreover, the degradation rate of 5 mol/L ATZ under the influence of O3/H2O2was 92.59% in phosphate buffer at pH7. The mechanism analysis showed that HO• and O3underwent co-oxidized degradation and that the HO• and O3oxidation degradation ratios were close to 1:1 under acidic conditions. Furthermore, HO• oxidative degradation dominated the ATZ degradation process. The kinetics analysis showed that the ATZ kinetics of O3/H2O2degradation were more compatible with quasi-second-order reaction kinetics under different temperatures, pH values, and H2O2concentrations.Keywords:ozone;hydrogen peroxide;atrazine;degradation mechanism;kinetics

Biodegradation of Crystalline and Nonaqueous Phase Liquid-Dissolved ATRAZINE by Arthrobacter sp. ST11 with Cd2+ Resistance

Jiameng Zhang,Zhiliang Yu,Yaling Gao,Meini Wang,Kai Wang,Tao Pan

A newly isolated cadmium (Cd)-resistant bacterial strain from herbicides-polluted soil in China could use atrazine as the sole carbon, nitrogen, and energy source for growth in a mineral salt medium (MSM). Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and physiochemical tests, the bacterium was identified asArthrobactersp. and named ST11. The biodegradation of atrazine by ST11 was investigated in experiments, with the compound present either as crystals or dissolved in di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) as a non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL). After 48 h, ST11 consumed 68% of the crystalline atrazine in MSM. After being dissolved in DEHP, the degradation ratio of atrazine was reduced to 55% under the same conditions. Obviously, the NAPL-dissolved atrazine has lower bioavailability than the crystalline atrazine. Cd2+at concentrations of 0.05–1.5 mmol/L either had no effect (<0.3 mmol/L), slight effects (0.5–1.0 mmol/L), or significantly (1.5 mmol/L) inhibited the growth of ST11 in Luria-Bertani medium. Correspondingly, in the whole concentration range (0.05–1.5 mmol/L), Cd2+promoted ST11 to degrade atrazine, whether crystalline or dissolved in DEHP. Refusal to adsorb Cd2+may be the main mechanism of high Cd resistance in ST11 cells. These results may provide valuable insights for the microbial treatment of arable soil co-polluted by atrazine and Cd.Keywords:atrazine;Arthrobactersp. Polyaniline and polystyrene sulfonic acid modified on conductive biochar nanoparticle with strong signal enhancement for trace atrazine detection

Penghu Duan,Dongpeng Mao,Dayi Zhang,Xinyao Wang,Xiyao Kong,Yunxian Piao

A label and reagent free and cost effective immunosensing system was newly developed for detection of trace leveled atrazine in water. This was constructed by synthesis of polyaniline (PA) and polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSS) modified biochar (BC) nanoparticle composite (PA-PSS-BC) and coating them on screen printed electrode as conductive and electrochemically active layer, and covalently immobilizing anti-atrazine antibody on electrode for specific target binding. The low cost biochar from sugarcane was highly conductive and favorable for attaching PA and PSS due to large surface area and sp 2 carbon structure. Crediting to dopant PSS, PA-PSS-BC achieved significant enhancement of redox current signal even in phosphate buffered saline of neutral pH compared to that of without PSS. And redox current of PA was extremely stable with negligible signal change even after twenty cycles repeated reactions owning to protection by BC. These essentially ensured sensing platform being sensitively performed in neutral solution with exemption of adding external redox reagent. As a result, fairly low concentrations of atrazine could be detected within 5 min, with limit of detection being 0.407 ng/L in a dynamic detection range varying from 1 to 100 ng/L. Moreover, the immunosensor exhibited reasonable signal recoveries for detecting trace leveled atrazine in real water samples, high selectivity, and good stability with dry and cold storage.

Mechanism and Kinetic Analysis of Degradation of Atrazine by US/PMS

Yixin Lu,Wenlai Xu,Haisong Nie,Ying Zhang,Na Deng,Jianqiang Zhang

The degradation effect, degradation mechanism, oxidation kinetics, and degradation products of Atrazine (ATZ) by Ultrasound/Peroxymonosulfate (US/PMS) in phosphate buffer (PB) under different conditions were studied. It turned out that the degradation rate of US/PMS to ATZ was 45.85% when the temperature of the reaction system, concentration of PMS, concentration of ATZ, ultrasonic intensity, and reaction time were 20 °C, 200 μmol/L, 1.25 μmol/L, 0.88 W/mL, and 60 min, respectively. Mechanism analysis showed that PB alone had no degradation effect on ATZ while PMS alone had extremely weak degradation effect on ATZ. HO• and SO4−• coexist in the US/PMS system, and the degradation of ATZ at pH7 is dominated by free radical degradation. Inorganic anion experiments revealed that Cl−, HCO3−, and NO3−showed inhibitory effects on the degradation of ATZ by US/PMS, with Cl−contributing the strongest inhibitory effect while NO3−showed the weakest suppression effect. According to the kinetic analysis, the degradation kinetics of ATZ by US/PMS was in line with the quasi-first-order reaction kinetics. ETA with concentration of 1 mmol/L reduced the degradation rate of ATZ by US/PMS to 10.91%. Product analysis indicated that the degradation of ATZ by US/PMS was mainly achieved by dealkylation, dichlorination, and hydroxylation, but the triazine ring was not degraded. A total of 10 kinds of ATZ degradation intermediates were found in this experiment. Keywords:ultrasound;peroxymonosulfate;free radicals;ATZ;degradation mechanism

Heat/PMS Degradation of Atrazine: Theory and Kinetic Studies

Yixin Lu,Yujie Liu,Chenghan Tang,Jiao Chen,Guo Liu

The degradation effect of heat/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) on atrazine (ATZ) is studied. The results show that the heat/PMS degradation for ATZ is 96.28% at the moment that the phosphate buffer (PB) pH, temperature, PMS dosage, ATZ concentration, and reaction time are 7, 50 °C, 400 μmol/L, 2.5 μmol/L, and 60 min. A more alkaline PB is more likely to promote the breakdown of ATZ through heat/PMS, while the PB alone has a more acidic effect on the PMS than the partially alkaline solution.HO•andSO4−•coexisted within the heat/PMS scheme, and ATZ quantity degraded byHO•andSO4−•in PB with pH = 7, pH = 1.7~1.HCO3−makes it difficult for heat/PMS to degrade ATZ according to inorganic anion studies, whileCl−andNO3−accelerate the degradation and the acceleration effect ofNO3−is more obvious. The kinetics of ATZ degradation via heat/PMS is quasi-first-order. Ethanol (ETA) with the identical concentration inhibited ATZ degradation slightly more thanHCO3−, and both of them reduced the degradation rates of heat/PMS to 7.06% and 11.56%. The addition ofCl−andNO3−increased the maximum rate of ATZ degradation by heat/PMS by 62.94% and 189.31%.Keywords:heat activation;PMS;atrazine;degradation mechanism;kinetics

Insights into atrazine degradation by persulfate activation using composite of nanoscale zero-valent iron and graphene: Performances and mechanisms

Shaohua Wu,Huijun He,Xiang Li,Chunping Yang,Guangming Zeng,Bin Wu,Shanying He,Li Lu

Atrazine, a herbicide used widely, could not be effectively removed from waters by chemical or biological processes. In this work, the performances and mechanisms for atrazine degradation were examined by persulfate (PS) activation with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and graphene (GR) composites at various conditions including dosages of nZVI/GR and PS, pH value, temperature and natural organic matters (NOM). Results showed that mass ratio of 5:1 for nZVI to GR exhibited the highest efficiency for catalytic degradation of atrazine when 92.1% of atrazine was removed within 21 min. The degradation efficiencies of atrazine increased when PS concentration increased from 0.2 to 1.0 mM, and were favored in acidic pH and high temperature, while was not affected by NOM with a concentration less than 4 mg/L. Electron spin resonance and radical quenching studies showed that both OH and SO 4 − were mainly produced on the surface of nZVI/GR, while SO 4 − was the predominant radicals responsible for the degradation of atrazine. Mechanisms for atrazine degradation were also proposed on the basis of XRD and XPS analysis. And its degradation pathways involved in dealkylation, alkylic hydroxylation, dechlorination-hydroxylation, and alkylic oxidation using LC/MS/MS techniques. These results could provide a better understanding of the application of nZVI/GR-PS system for atrazine removal from waters.
