Distribution characteristics and ecological risk assessment of heavy metal pollution in seawater near the Yellow River Estuary of Laizhou Bay

Xiaojie Jin,Jichen Liu,Liming Wang,Xiaoxiao Yu,Jiaying Wang,Yang Jin,Shaonan Qiu,Jiaqi Liu,Yuting Zhao,Shan Sun

To understand the characteristics and pollution status of heavy metals in the intersection areas of Laizhou Bay and the Yellow River Estuary in Shandong Province, the contents of various heavy metals in surface seawater samples collected from this area in August 2022 were detected. The spatial distributions of the heavy metals were analysed, which exhibits a general decreasing trend in the concentrations of Hg, As, Cr, and Pb from west to east, while Cd, Zn, and Cu show the opposite trend. The average single-factor index P values decrease in the following order Pb > Zn > Hg > Cu > As > Cd > Cr, among which Pb, Zn, Hg, and Cu caused pollution in this area. The potential ecological risk index values indicate that the main heavy metal pollutants in study area are Hg and Pb, with Hg having the highest value, accounting for 74.7%, and being the main potential ecological risk factor. Correlation analysis shows that the most significant environmental factor affecting heavy metal content is salinity. According to the interactive heatmap between cluster analysis and station classification, the heavy metals have originated from industrial, agricultural, and domestic sewage discharge, surface runoff, river inputs, seawater aquaculture, maritime transportation, and fuel exhaust emissions. This research hopes to provide some reference value for the protection of marine and estuarine ecosystems.

Spatiotemporal distribution and potential ecological risks of current-use pesticides (CUPs) in Laizhou Bay, China

Yufei Dai,Xianli Song,Jing Zhao,Limin Wang,Xiaoru Cui,Li Lu,Jingyu Zhang,Haoyu Zhang,Dahai Zhang,Keqiang Li

Pesticides occur widely in coastal waters and potentially pose a risk to marine ecosystems and human health. The spatiotemporal distribution of current-use pesticides (CUPs) was studied in Laizhou Bay (LZB) and the Xiaoqing River watershed in China during the summer of 2022 and spring of 2023. The pesticide composite index ( PCI ) and persistence index ( PI ) were established in association with the risk quotient ( RQ ) to assess the ecological risk in LZB. In this study, 17 and 12 kinds of CUP were detected in rivers and LZB seawater, respectively, with atrazine and neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) being the most frequently detected CUPs at higher concentrations. The average concentration of CUPs decreased from rivers to the coast and towards the center of the LZB, with higher levels in spring and lower levels in summer in rivers and a reversed pattern in seawater. The high-risk areas lie in the LZB coastal area and the estuary. Atrazine, chlorpyrifos, and imidacloprid might pose a high risk to aquatic organisms based on the RQ in the LZB, whereas the priority concern pesticides are atrazine and triazophos based on the PCI and PI . This study is of great significance for assessing the composite ecological risk of CUPs in aquatic environments.

Evaluation of geologic bearing capacity of coastal zones taking coastal area of Laizhou Bay as an example

Dongmei Song,Lin Zang,Chunxiao Liu,Xuefa Shi,Huisheng Wu

The estuarine and coastal vulnerability around the world is increasing day by day, due to climate warming and sea level rise . And the resource-environmental pressure, caused by population expansion, also has been increasing. In a word, human interventions have caused lots of irreparable damages to the sensitive ecosystems in estuarine and coastal regions. Therefore, to carry out evaluations about ecological state and environmental bearing capacity is of great significance for environmental protection, as well as resource utilization. In this study, we constructed an indices system, which was based on a PSR model, to be used for the geologic bearing capacity assessment in coastal zones. There is no doubt that determination of indices weights is very important in the evaluation process, even it is a key factor restricting the ecological evaluation accuracy. Based on the above, we proposed a new weight determining method by fusing non-structural fuzzy number weighting and triangular fuzzy number weighting in the basis of the theories of fuzzy mathematics and named it as unstructured triangular fuzzy number weight determining method. In this new method, judgment matrix is used to calculate the relative importance among those indices included in the evaluation system with unstructured binary tone operators and rules of triangular fuzzy number. Therefore, this new method accords with the cognitive law of decision makers from macro to micro, and that three different experience attitudes (pessimistic, neutral, and optimistic) are fully considered can make the one-sidedness caused by a single attitude be avoided effectively. In addition, a new consistency test method entitled hierarchical sorting consistency test method was proposed to check the consistency of judgment matrix. This study took the coastal area around Laizhou Bay in Shandong Province of China for example and assessed the geologic bearing capacity here. The results indicate the geologic bearing capacity here is gradually increasing from the coast to the inland, and that the proposed weighting model is effective for eco-geological environment evaluation.

Detection, occurrence, influencing factors and environmental risks of paralytic shellfish toxins in seawater in a typical mariculture bay

Lei Pan,Xiuping He,Junhui Chen,Jinhui Jeanne Huang,Yuning Wang,Shengkang Liang,Baodong Wang

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) producing algae are widely distributed in the global coastal aquatic environment, posing a threat to coastal ecosystem health and mariculture safety. However, the levels and potential environmental risks of PSTs frequently detected in shellfish remain largely unexplored in seawater of mariculture zones. In this study, a new method for trace detection of 13 common PSTs (<1.0 ng/L) in seawater was established based on off-line solid phase extraction (SPE) and on-line SPE-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (on-line SPE-LC-MS/MS), and a systematic investigation of PSTs in seawater of the Laizhou Bay, a typical aquaculture bay in China, was conducted to understand their pollution status, environmental impact factors and ecological risks for the first time. Eleven PSTs were detected in the seawater of Laizhou Bay with total concentrations ranging from 0.75 to 349.47 ng/L (mean, 176.27 ng/L), which indicates the rich diversity of PSTs in the mariculture bay and demonstrates the reliability of the proposed analytical method. C1, C2, GTX2, GTX3, dc GTX2, and dc GTX3 were found to be the predominant PSTs, which refreshed the knowledge of PST contamination in the coastal aquatic environment. PST levels in seawater exhibited the highest levels in the southeastern mouth of Laizhou Bay and decreased toward the inner bay. Correlation analyses showed that climatic factors , nutrient status and hydrological conditions had significant effects on the distribution of PST in mariculture bay. Preliminary environmental risk assessments revealed that aquatic organisms throughout the waters of Laizhou Bay are at risk of chronic PST toxicity. These findings imply that the risk of PST in seawater of mariculture bay has previously been grossly underestimated, and that the coastal aquatic environment in North China and even the world may be at more serious risk of PST pollution, which should be taken seriously.
