To investigate the effect of isomorphic substitution on siderite activation of hydrogen peroxide, different X-substituted siderite (X = Mn, Co, Ca, and Mg) was artificially synthesized and utilized to activate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) over a pH range from 5 to 9. The results indicated that the addition of siderite generally accelerated the conversion process of H 2 O 2 to ·OH regardless of initial pH values. However, the conversion ability from H 2 O 2 to ·OH was only enhanced under the acidic condition. Then, X-substituted siderite generally enhanced the conversion rate and inhibited the capacity of H 2 O 2 to ·OH under neutral and alkaline conditions. The Mn, Ca, and Mg-substituted siderite facilitated both conversion rate and capacity of H 2 O 2 to ·OH under weakly acidic conditions, while Co-substituted siderite inhibited both compared to the raw siderite. The element substitution mainly affected the stability of siderite, which resulted in the dissolution of siderite to generate Fe 2+ and contributes to the H 2 O 2 decomposition and the ·OH generation. Findings from this research suggested that the isomorphic substitution of siderite had a non-negligible impact on the transformation of H 2 O 2 to ·OH.

This work systematically studied the adsorption behavior of sodium oleate (NaOL) on hematite , limonite, and siderite and their corresponding flotation performance at alkaline pH . The adsorption behavior and conformation of NaOL on mineral surfaces were investigated using zeta potential analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging characterization. The effect of NaOL adsorption on the surface wettability and bubble-particle attachment was further analyzed by contact angle measurement, attachment time tests, and wrap angle tests. Finally, batch flotation tests and kinetic analysis were carried out to evaluate three mineral flotation behaviors. The results revealed that NaOL could chemically adsorb on hematite, limonite, and siderite and caused the significant negative mobility in their zeta potentials. It was found that Fe atoms exposed on their surface were the main active centers for the chemisorption of NaOL. Hematite and limonite had more active sites for NaOL adsorption than siderite, and Fe(III) on hematite and limonite surface could interact more strongly with NaOL than Fe(II) on siderite, which resulted in the higher adsorption density and intensity of NaOL on hematite and limonite than that on siderite. This further contributed to the stronger hydrophobicity on their surface than that on siderite surface. The enhancement of hydrophobicity could increase the attachment efficiency of bubble-particle ( E a ). Therefore, hematite and limonite particles had more and faster attachment with bubbles than siderite particles. As such, much higher cumulative ultimate recoveries ( R ∞ ) and flotation rate constants ( k ) of hematite and limonite than those of siderite were obtained.

This investigation focused on the collection performance and sorption mechanisms of decaethoxylated stearylamine (DSA) applied as a new high-selectivity hornblende collector, to further extend the use of DSA for efficiently recovering siderite from hornblende. The collecting ability of DSA to both minerals was explored via a series of flotation experiments. Flotation results illustrated that in comparison with DDA, DSA displayed an excellent collection performance for the hornblende flotation, whereas it hardly collected siderite. With 0.18 mM DSA, siderite could be efficiently separated from hornblende at pH 6.30 through reverse flotation. The selective collection mechanisms of DSA for hornblende were uncovered via surface wettability, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface electrical properties, infrared spectrum (IR) characterizations, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Contact angle detection indicated that DSA strengthened the surface hydrophobicity of hornblende instead of siderite, which promoted the strong collection of hornblende. Besides, surface electrical detection and IR analyses suggested that the intense DSA sorption toward the hornblende was due to the combination of electrostatic adsorption and hydrogen bonding interaction. It was demonstrated by XPS results that larger amounts of DSA were adsorbed onto hornblende than siderite, and the O sites of hornblende were involved in electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding interaction. Furthermore, MD simulations further revealed that compared with siderite, the intense adsorption of DSA on the hornblende was due to the hydrogen bond and electrostatic interactions between its amino group and the hornblende surface, as evidenced by a much smaller interaction distance and very negative electrostatic energy. Therefore, DSA can be utilized as an efficient collector for collecting hornblende to achieve the desiliconization of the siderite flotation.

The effective removal of phosphate from wastewater and prevention of eutrophication of water bodies are of great significance. This study develops and compares the phosphorus removal performance of natural siderite with three different modification methods: thermal activation, hydrothermal treatment, and surface precipitation. The calcium-modified siderite composite (SID-Ca) exhibited excellent phosphorus removal performance for low to medium concentration phosphate wastewater (PO 4 3- -P < 15 mg/L), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 33.4 mg/g, which was 7.4 and 5.3 times higher than that of natural siderite (SID) (4.51 mg/g) and hydrothermally treated siderite (SID-H) (6.28 mg/g), respectively. SID-Ca did not show significant differences in adsorption performance at high levels of co-existing ions (SO 4 2- , NO 3 - ) at 500 mg / L. Following characterisation by XRD, XPS, FTIR and MAPPING, it was concluded that the phosphorus removal mechanism of the SID-Ca composites was primarily the inner complexation in ion exchange and ligand exchange. By leveraging the exceptional stability and low cost of natural siderite to develop a modified siderite using straightforward co-precipitation, a novel approach for phosphate adsorption in wastewater was established, and its removal mechanism was elucidated.

Natural siderite (FeCO 3 ), simulated synthetic siderite and nZVI/FeCO 3 composite were used as green and easily available iron-based catalysts in peroxydisulfate activation for remediating 2-chlorophenol as the target contaminant and this technique can effectively degrade organic pollutants in the soil. The key reaction parameters such as catalysts dosage, oxidant concentration and pH, were investigated to evaluate the catalytic performance of different materials in catalytic systems. The buffering property of natural soil conduced satisfactory degradation performance in a wide pH range (3-10). Both the main non-radical of 1 O 2 and free radicals of SO 4 · − and O H · were evidenced by quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance. The reduction of nZVI on FFC surface not only has the advantage for electronic transfer to promote the circulation of Fe(III) to Fe(II), but also can directly dechlorinate. Furthermore, the intermediates were comprehensively analyzed by GC-MS and a potential removal mechanism of three oxidant system for 2-CP soil degradation was obtained. Briefly, this research provides a new perspective for organic contaminate soil treatment using natural siderite or simulated synthetic siderite as efficient and environmental catalytic material.

Fungi play vital roles in the fate of organic pollutants, particularly when interacting with minerals in aquatic and soil environments. Mechanisms by which fungi may mitigate pollutions in fungus-mineral interactions are still unclear. Inspired by biogeochemical cycling, we constructed a range of co-culture systems to investigate synergistic effects of the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium and the iron-bearing mineral siderite on thiamethoxam (THX) transformation, a common neonicotinoid pesticide. Co-culturing with siderite significantly enhanced THX transformation during the initial 10 days with a dose effect, achieving 86 % removal within 25 days. Fungi could affect siderite’s dissolution, transformation, and precipitation through their biological activities. These interactions triggered physiological adaptation and resilience in fungi. Siderite could enhance the activity of fungal ligninolytic enzymes and cytochrome P450, facilitating biotransformation. Genes expression related to growth, energy metabolism, and oxidative stress response upregulated, enhancing fungal resilience to THX. The primary THX degradation pathways included nitro-reduction, C-N cleavage, and de-chlorination. Molecular dynamics simulations provided insights into catalytic mechanisms of enzyme-THX interactions. Together, siderite could act as natural enhancers that endowed fungi to resist physical and chemical stresses in environments, providing insights into contaminants attenuation, fungal biomineralization, and the coevolution of the Earth's lithosphere and biosphere.

Oxygenation of siderite produces hydroxyl radicals (•OH) that are capable of transforming the pollutants. Yet, the influence of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs)/ thiols (LMWOTs) which are widely occurring in soils and waters on •OH production from the oxygenation process of siderite is poorly understood. Results of this study show that the presence of LMWOAs/LMWOTs significantly facilitated •OH production from siderite oxidation by O 2 at pH 6–8. For instance, at pH 7, the cumulative •OH concentration within 24 h was only 1.3 μM for oxygenation of 1 g/L siderite, while it boosted to 19.7 and 7.2 μM, respectively, with the respective addition of 1 mM ethylenediaminotetraacetate and cysteine. The mechanisms responsible for the enhanced •OH production are associated with the complexation ability and redox activity of LMWOAs/LMWOTs. In the absence of LMWOAs/LMWOTs, •OH is mainly produced from the oxidation of adsorbed Fe(II) by O 2 , followed by the oxidation of structural Fe(II) on siderite surface. In the presence of LMWOAs, LMWOAs react with adsorbed Fe(II) and structural Fe(II) to produce complexed Fe(II). Therefore, the oxidation of LMWOAs complexed Fe(II) by O 2 predominantly contributed to •OH production. Although the complexation ability of LMWOTs is weaker than that of LMOWAs, LMWOTs can reduce O 2 to generate •O 2 − and H 2 O 2 , thus facilitating •OH production. Based on the proposed mechanisms, a kinetic model was developed to quantify the relative contribution of each pathway to •OH production. The addition of 1 mM citrate and cysteine in siderite suspension could increase the removal of trichloroethylene from <5% to 15% and 7%, respectively. Our study reveals the overlooked catalytic effects of LMWOAs/LMWOTs in enhancing •OH production from siderite oxidation by O 2 under redox-dynamic conditions.
