Influence of Reduction Temperature on the Structure and Naphthalene Hydrogenation Saturation Performance of Ni2P/Al2O3 Catalysts

Ze Li,Jie-Ying Jing,Zhi-Qiang Qie,Wen-Ying Li

Jet fuel rich in hydroaromatics and cycloalkanes could be derived from direct coal liquefaction oil via the hydrogenation saturation process. Developing an efficient catalyst to transform naphthalene hydrocarbons to hydroaromatics and cycloalkanes with high selectivity plays a significant role in realizing the above hydrogenation saturation process. In this work, Ni2P/Al2O3catalysts were prepared at different reduction temperatures via the thermal decomposition of hypophosphite. We investigated the influence of reduction temperature and the results showed that reduction temperature had an important impact on the properties of Ni2P/Al2O3catalysts. When the reduction temperature was 400 °C, the Ni2P particle size of the Ni2P/Al2O3catalyst was 3.8 nm and its specific surface area was 170 m2/g. Furthermore, the Ni2P/Al2O3catalyst reduced at 400 °C obtained 98% naphthalene conversion and 98% decalin selectivity. The superior catalytic activity was attributed to the smaller Ni2P particle size, higher specific surface area and suitable acidity, which enhanced the adsorption of naphthalene on Ni2P/Al2O3catalyst.Keywords:nickel phosphide;reduction temperature;naphthalene hydrogenation;thermal decomposition of hypophosphite

Unpredictable properties of industrial HY zeolite for tetralin hydrocracking

Jiayao Qi,Yanni Guo,Hanqiong Jia,Binbin Fan,Hang Gao,Bo Qin,Jinghong Ma,Yanze Du,Ruifeng Li

The commercial Y zeolites are widely used in catalytic cracking and hydrocracking in industry, the efficient hydrocracking of polycyclic aromatics is a challenging task in petroleum and coal refining. The acidic zeolite in the hydrocracking bi-functional catalyst dominates largely the product selectivity, so understanding the independent effect of acid sites is favorable to the design of the catalyst. Herein, five industrial HY zeolites with different ratios of Si/Al were applied to tetralin hydrocracking to produce high-value benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) in a high-pressure fixed bed reactor . The result indicated that mesoporous HUSY not only improved the catalytic activity but also exhibited longer-term stability compared with micropore HY. Interestingly, tetralin conversion in the hydrocracking showed a high-similar value when the Si/Al ratio of the zeolites is above 26 with almost identical porous structure , regardless of the distribution of acidity. And the yield of products is associated with the acidity of the HY zeolites, the lower the Si/Al ratio is, the more favorable the monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons form. Therefore, it is beneficial for the industrial process to reduce the zeolite post-treatment procedure which achieves the high activity and BTX yield in the hydrocracking of tetralin and to abate the cost consumption, although it is still impractical to get rid of the trial-error scheme for the designing of an efficient catalyst in practice.

Synthesis of small-crystal Y zeolites via regulating Na2O/Al2O3 and superior catalytic performance of corresponding NiWS-supported catalysts for hydrocracking of naphthalene

Xiaojun Dai,Yan Cheng,Tingting Liu,Lingjuan Mao,Ruihua Kang,Qiang Wei,Yasong Zhou

In the process of petroleum refining, realizing the production and utilization of chemical raw materials is the common goal pursued by the petrochemical industry at present. The integration of the refining and chemical industry can not only produce clean fuel, but also meet the demand of the chemical industry for raw materials. In this study, Y zeolites with controllable crystal size and particle size were successfully prepared by simply adjusting the composition of the directing agent. Through a series of characterization, the effects of the composition change of the directing agent on the physicochemical properties of Y zeolites were investigated. Corresponding NiWS supported catalysts were prepared by using synthesized Y zeolites as supports. Taking naphthalene as the model reactant, the effects of crystal size and particle size of Y zeolites on the catalytic performance of the catalyst and on the hydrocracking of naphthalene to C6–C8 products were investigated. The results show that the preparation of small crystal Y zeolites can be realized by simply adjusting the composition of the directing agent, and the corresponding catalyst can realize the efficient production of chemical raw materials. This is expected to provide a simple, economical, feasible, and effective idea for the petrochemical industry to realize the goal of refining and chemical integration.

The hydrogenation of aromatic-naphthalene with Ni2P/CNTs

Minzhi Ruan,Jun Guan,Demin He,Tao Meng,Qiumin Zhang

Ni2P/CNTs was synthesized using an impregnation method. XPS revealed that CNTs could affect the electronic properties of bulk Ni2P. The catalyst shows superior activity for HYD of naphthalene with a conversion of 99%, and demonstrates superior tolerance towards potential catalyst poisons, which is higher than Ni/CNTs with a conversion of 89%.

RuNiCo-based nanocatalysts with different nanostructures for naphthalene selective hydrogenation

Lihua Zhu,Huan Zhang,Laifu Zhong,Jinbao Zheng,Changlin Yu,Nuowei Zhang,Bing Hui Chen

The NiCo/Ni(OH) 2 -Co(OH) 2 /C bimetallic nanomaterials were prepared at room temperature (RT) via hydrazine hydrate reduction method. And the corresponding Ru/NiCo/Ni(OH) 2 -Co(OH) 2 /C (Ru-NiCo/C∼uncalcined) tri-metallic supported nanocatalysts were synthesized by galvanic replacement reaction. The multi-level supported nanostructure of ruthenium nanoclusters-on-NiCo-on-Ni(OH) 2 -Co(OH) 2 nanoparticles (NPs) then loaded on carbon was proved by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), high-angle annular dark-field scanning TEM (HAADF-STEM), STEM energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental mapping and line-scans (STEM-EDS), and high-sensitivity low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy (HS-LEIS) techniques. And the RuNiCo alloy/C and Ru@NiCo core-shell/C catalysts were obtained after the Ru-NiCo/C∼uncalcined catalyst annealed in hydrogen at 300 °C and 600 °C, respectively. The nanostructures of the reduced RuNiCo tri-metallic supported nanocatalysts were also characterized by the above-mentioned analysis techniques. The catalytic performance of these catalysts was evaluated by naphthalene hydrogenation. The Ru-NiCo/C∼uncalcined catalyst exhibited much more excellent catalytic performance and higher selectivity to decalin than the Ru/Ni/Ni(OH) 2 /C and Ru/Co/Co(OH) 2 /C catalysts, mainly attributed to its unique nanostructure and the positive synergistic effect among the related Ni, Co and Ru species. And Ru-NiCo/C∼uncalcined showed good stability under mild reaction conditions (reaction temperature – 60 °C and hydrogen pressure – 4.48 MPa). The effect of reaction temperature on the catalytic properties of the Ru-NiCo/C∼uncalcined catalyst was investigated in this work. However, the RuNiCo alloy/C and Ru@NiCo core-shell/C catalysts did not show any activity (yield to decalin < 0.1%) for this reaction due to their nanostructures and the absence of effective synergy effect.

PtNi/C bimetallic nanocatalyst with high catalytic performance and stability for 1-nitronaphthalene hydorgenation to 1-naphthylamine

Huan Fu,Luna Ruan,Jianhua Liao,An Pei,Jun Liu,Li Zeng,Kai Yang,Lihua Zhu,Bing Hui Chen

In this report, the Ni/C sample was successfully prepared at room temperature (RT) by depositing nickel related species on carbon black by a chemical liquid reduction method with hydrazine hydrate as reducing agent, Pt/C was synthesized via a wetness impregnation method. And Pt was supported on Ni/C by galvanic replacement reaction to form PtNi/C bimetallic nanocatalyst. By comparing the catalytic performance of different catalysts for 1-nitronaphthalene hydrogenation, it could be found that the PtNi/C bimetallic nanocatalyst showed higher catalytic activity than monometallic nanocatalysts (Pt/C and Ni/C), exhibiting 100 % conversion of 1-nitronaphthalene, 100 % selectivity to 1-naphthylamine and turnover frequency of 194.9 h −1 under mild reaction conditions (40 min, 30 °C, 3.0 MPa H 2 ). The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, HAADF-STEM, STEM-EDX mapping and line-scanning, TG, HRTEM and H 2 -TPD, which proved that PtNi/C showed most outstanding catalytic behaviors in 1-nitronaphthalene selective hydrogenation due to high dispersion of platinum, the nanostructure of Pt-on-Ni-on-Ni(OH) 2 and thus synergism effect among Pt, Ni and Ni(OH) 2 .
