Forest succession induced by pine wilt disease can result in changes in vegetation, thereby reducing timber production and impacting the input of belowground litter. Litter decomposition plays a crucial role in nutrient cycling within forest ecosystems. However, studies focusing on the litter decomposition process during forest succession are not common. Therefore, we investigated the decomposition rates of litter, enzyme activities, fungal communities, and functional genes in pine needles and twigs in pure ( Pinus massoniana ) and mixed ( P. massoniana and Liquidambar formosana ) forests over three consecutive years. The results indicated that the decomposition rate of pine needles ranges from 57.79 % to 74.53 %, while the decomposition rate of pine twigs ranges from 24.16 % to 60.57 %. There is no significant difference in the litter decomposition rates between mixed and pure forests. During litter decomposition, the activity of acid phosphatase in pure forests was consistently higher than in mixed forests. Pure forests recruited more unique fungi to participate in decomposition compared to mixed forests. The fungal network connections in mixed forests are more complex than those in pure forests, and they become even more complex in the later stages of decomposition. There are differences in functional gene structure between mixed and pure forests, with an increase in the abundance of nitrogen cycle genes ( nirK 1, nirK 2, nirK 3, nirS 1, nirS 2) and phosphorus cycle genes ( phoX ) in mixed forests, thereby promoting nutrient cycling. In summary, these research results provide new insights into the mechanisms that regulate ecosystem functions and fungal community during forest succession.

This study aims to illustrate the temporal and spatial patterns of rhizosphere microecological characteristics of plants highly adapted to heavy metals under different levels of heavy metal stress, to reveal the rhizosphere nutrient cycling and the mechanism of enhanced stress tolerance. The dynamic changes of rhizosphere microecology of Trifolium repens L. (white clover) were studied under different concentrations of Cd treatment. The spatial variation of soil enzyme activities was investigated in situ and microscopically by in situ zymography and the spatial distribution models of enzyme activities were developed. The results showed that the rhizosphere ecosystem remained relatively stable under 40 days of stress, with pH ranging from 7.13 to 7.26 and organic matter contents ranging from 14.83 to 18.09 g kg − 1 . In addition, pH and soil organic matter (SOM) were important ecological factors affecting Cd activation in the rhizosphere. Based on soil zymography analysis, both phosphatase and N-acetyl-glucosaminidase hotspots had root effects, and a maximum hotspot area of 21.51 and 10.19% at 10 mg kg − 1 Cd treatment, respectively. Besides, the maximum activities of both enzymes were observed at 5 mg kg − 1 Cd treatment and the rhizosphere extension distance up to 1.82 and 1.59 cm. This study reveals the potential rhizosphere regulatory mechanism of white clover. It was emphasized that the Cd bioavailability was increased in the rhizosphere, the activities of enzymes related to N and P cycling were stimulated under 5–10 mg kg − 1 Cd stress, and thus soil N loss due to Cd could be compensated in the rhizosphere.

As an emerging pollutant, antidepressants in wastewater have received extensive attention due to their metabolic stability and antimicrobial activity in aquatic systems. However, the scarcity of experimental data limits the validation of their potential impacts on ecosystem functionality. This study examined the effects of fluoxetine and amitriptyline (0–100 ng L −1 ) on microbial decomposers in stream ecosystems. These two antidepressants exhibited different effects on the process of leaf litter decomposition. Fluoxetine at 1 ng L −1 inhibited the dominance of functional bacteria ( Caulobacter and Flavobacterium ) and cellobiohydrolase activity, significantly reducing the leaf decomposition rate by 11.5%. Notably, amitriptyline at 10 ng L −1 promoting this ecological process by enhancing fungal biomass and most enzyme activities, and increasing the abundance of functional fungi ( Anguillospora and Setophaeosphaeria ). Nevertheless, when amitriptyline concentrations exceeded 10 ng L −1 , nitrogen-limitation was observed in microbial decomposers. These findings illustrate the complexity of the aquatic microbial community in responding to external factors, underscoring the importance of further research into the effects of antidepressants on the nutrient cycling and organic matter dynamics of ecosystems.

The particle size of plastic is one of the most important factors influencing its ecotoxicity, but we are unclear about the effect of polystyrene (PS) particle size on microbial decomposers and consequent nutrient cycling in streams. Here, using microcosm experiments, we assessed how three PS sizes (50 nm, 1 μm, and 20 μm) influenced the process and consequences of leaf litter decomposition. Under acute exposure to 1 μm and 20 μm PS, fungal biomass significantly decreased, but microbial biomass significantly increased, indicating compensations may work between fungi and other microbial decomposers. After chronic exposure to 50 nm and 1 μm PS, the leaf decomposition rate decreased by 19.27 % and 15.22 %, respectively, due to the reduced microbial enzyme activity , fungal diversity, and dominance of Anguillospora . As a result, the regeneration of nutrients, especially phosphorus, was significantly depressed, which might influence the primary productivity of streams. Therefore, our results suggest that nanoscale PS has a greater impact on microbial activity , thus affecting their functioning in leaf litter decomposition and consequent nutrient cycling. The findings provide a data support for the risk assessment of plastic pollution in freshwater systems.
