The strategies for optimizing the morphology/structure and regulating the active sites of materials are effective ways to improve their electrocatalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and electrooxidation reaction. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy for constructing a NiO/NiCo2O4 porous nanowire catalyst on nickel foam (NiO/NiCo2O4/NF) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst to enhance the electrocatalytic performance for coupling the HER with the glucose oxidation reaction (GOR). Benefiting from the unique 1D porous nanowire structure and enhanced interfacial synergistic effect of the bicomponent catalyst, optimized NiO/NiCo2O4/NF-300 exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic activities for the GOR and HER with low potentials of 1.128 V and 0.212 V, respectively, at 100 mA cm−2. Moreover, the GOR exhibited a high yield of 72% for formic acid. This study provides a promising and simple strategy for the construction of 1D NiO/NiCo2O4 porous nanowire electrocatalysts with rich heterogeneous interfaces and paves a facile pathway for accelerating biomass electrochemical reaction-assisted hydrogen production.

Cobalt hydroxide has been emerging as a promising catalyst for the electrocatalytic oxidation reactions, including the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and glucose oxidation reaction (GOR). Herein, we prepared cobalt hydroxide nanoparticles (CoHP) and cobalt hydroxide nanosheets (CoHS) on nickel foam. In the electrocatalytic OER, CoHS shows an overpotential of 306 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 . This is enhanced as compared with that of CoHP (367 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 ). In addition, CoHS also exhibits an improved performance in the electrocatalytic GOR. The improved electrocatalytic performance of CoHS could be due to the higher ability of the two-dimensional nanosheets on CoHS in electron transfer. These results are useful for fabricating efficient catalysts for electrocatalytic oxidation reactions.

The simultaneous improvement of intrinsic activities and the number of active sites in electrocatalysts is the bottle-neck issue for H2 production. Herein, commercial CNTs serving as conductive kernels are in situ coupled with 3D ZIF-67 derived Co/CoP core-corona clusters. Such a hierarchical bead string nanostructure not only possesses highly exposed active sites, but also favours fast electron transfer for electrocatalytic kinetics. Our material shows excellent HER (η10 = −151 mV) and glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) performance, showing a smaller hybrid water splitting potential of 1.42 V compared to conventional water splitting (η10 = 1.74 V) for H2 production. DFT calculations indicate that the Schottky heterointerface at Co/CoP decreases the initial H2O dissociation energy barrier and possesses a thermoneutral H* adsorption free energy for the HER, as well as reducing the energy barrier for the GOR. Meanwhile, more oxidative cobalt oxyhydroxide favoured the GOR process. The present work opens a new avenue for designing Mott–Schottky multifunctional electrocatalysts for both energy-saving H2 production and value-added products.

Graphical Nano-structured materials for glycerol/glucose oxidation reaction : Herein, hollow-structured PW-NiCo-NC was synthesized from a POMOF precursor as a highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst for HER and glycerol/glucose oxidation reaction. Furthermore, it exhibits energy-efficient catalytic hydrogen production activity in an OWS cell assisted by glycerol/glucose oxidation reaction. The electrocatalytic conversion of water-to-hydrogen powered by renewable energy is one of the promising strategies to unravel the energy and environment crises. However, a such process usually costs large energy consumption owing to the low efficiency of anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is another vital half reaction of the overall water splitting (OWS) system. Herein, we designed and fabricated hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages loaded with Ni 3 N and Co nanoparticles derived from polyoxometalate-encapsuled metal-organic frameworks. The catalyst exhibited appealing dual functions for both OER and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), outperforming the Ni-free and solid samples. Notably, the designed catalyst also showed much enhanced electrochemical performance for glycerol/glucose oxidation reaction when compared with OER. The home-made two-electrode electrolyzer, coupled HER with polyalcohol or glucose oxidation reaction, only needs cell voltages of 1.125 and 1.557 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 , respectively, which are much smaller than that in 1 M KOH (2.087 V), demonstrating a large amount of energy saving for hydrogen production.

Glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) plays a significant role in glucose fuel cells anode and glucose sensors. Therefore, optimizing the GOR catalyst nanostructure is auxiliary to their efficient operation. In this study, we present a cascade-assembled strategy to prepare CuO nanobundles (CuO-NB) with high-density and homogenous grain boundaries (GBs). The essence of activity in GOR that depended on GBs are thoroughly investigated. The increased glucose diffusion coefficient of CuO-NB means that GBs has a faster glucose mass transfer, which is attributed to the terraces in GBs dislocation surface. Furthermore, the accumulation of electrons on GBs makes the glucose adsorption increased and the free energy of dehydrogenation step decreased, leading to a lower glucose oxidation barrier. Therefore, CuO-NB is appropriate for non-invasive glucose detection and glucose fuel cells. This study sheds new light on the GBs effect in GOR and paves the way for developing high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Cobalt oxide hollow nanododecahedra (Co 3 O 4 -HND) is synthesized by a facile thermal transformation of cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF, ZIF-67) template. The morphology and properties of the Co 3 O 4 -HND are characterized by a set of techniques, including transmission electron microscope (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Brunner–Emmet–Teller (BET). When tested as a non-enzymatic electrocatalyst for glucose oxidation reaction , the Co 3 O 4 -HND exhibits a high activity and shows an outstanding performance for determining glucose with a wide window of 2.0 μM to 6.06 mM, a high sensitivity of 708.4 μA mM −1 cm −2 , a low detection limit of 0.58 μM ( S / N =3), and fast response time(<2 s). Based on the nonenzymatic oxidation of glucose, Co 3 O 4 -HND could be served as an attractive non-enzyme and noble-metal-free electrocatalyst in glucose fuel cell (GFC) due to its excellent electrochemical properties, low cost and facile preparation.

Electrocatalytic oxidation of renewable biomass (such as glucose) into high-value-added chemicals provides an effective approach to achieving carbon neutrality. CuO-derived materials are among the most promising electrocatalysts for biomass electrooxidation , but the identification of their active sites under electrochemical conditions remains elusive. Herein, we report a potential-dependent structure evolution over CuO in the glucose oxidation reaction (GOR). Through systematic electrochemical and spectroscopic characterizations, we unveil that CuO undergoes Cu 2+ /Cu + and Cu 3+ /Cu 2+ redox processes at increased potentials with successive generation of Cu(OH) 2 and CuOOH as the active phases. In addition, these two structures have distinct activities in the GOR, with Cu(OH) 2 being favorable for aldehyde oxidation, and CuOOH showed faster kinetics in carbon–carbon cleavage and alcohol/aldehyde oxidation. This work deepens our understanding of the dynamic reconstruction of Cu-based catalysts under electrochemical conditions and may guide rational material design for biomass valorization.

Simultaneously improving electrochemical activity and stability is a long-term goal for water splitting. Herein, hierarchical N-doped carbon nanotubes on carbon nanowires derived from PPy are grown on carbon cloth, serving as a support for NiCo oxides/sulfides. The hierarchical electrodes annealed in N 2 or H 2 /N 2 display improved intrinsic activity and stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and glucose oxidation reaction. Compared with Pt/C||Ir/C in alkaline media, the glucose electrolysis assembled with electrodes exhibits a cell voltage of 1.38 V at 10 mA cm −2 , durability for >12 h at 50 mA cm −2 , and resistance to glucose/gluconic acid poisoning. In addition, electrocatalysts can also be applied in ethanol oxidation reactions. Systematic characterizations reveal the strong interactions between NiCo and N-doped carbon support-induced partial charge transfer at the interface and regulate the local electronic structure of active sites. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the synergistic effect between N-doped carbon supports, metallic NiCo, and NiCo oxides/sulfides optimize the adsorption energy of H 2 O and the H* free energy for HER. The energy barrier of the dehydrogenation of glucose effectively decreased. This work will attract attention to the role of metal-support interactions in enhancing the intrinsic activity and stability of electrocatalysts.

The electroconversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added chemicals has attracted widespread attention worldwide. Exploring efficient catalysts and designing reasonable reactants have become popular research directions in the strategy of coupling anode and cathode reactions. Herein, we report the construction of a self-supporting bifunctional Sn–SnSx electrode using a one-step electrodeposition method. The valence states of Sn at the Sn–SnSx surface are Sn4+, Sn2+ and Sn0, and the electrode exhibits excellent performances for the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) and glucose oxidation reaction (GOR), respectively. For the CO2RR, the Sn–SnSx electrode produced formate with a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93.3% and a stability of 36 h. Meanwhile, tin sulfides were first applied in anodic oxidation and a high FE of 88% was achieved for formate production in the GOR. Impressively, Sn–SnSx as a bifunctional electrode achieved co-production of formate at both the anode and cathode in the integrated electrolyzer coupled with the CO2RR and GOR. This coupling process combines the technical means of “electrooxidation–electroreduction” with the choice of reactants “CO2–C6H12O6”, resulting in FE values of 93.9% and 87.4% at the cathode and anode for the production of formate, as well as a 58.3% electrical energy saving for formate production in comparison with the traditional CO2RR coupled with the water oxidation reaction.

Replacing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with small molecule oxidation coupled with CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) has become an effective strategy to reduce the energy demand of electrolyzers. However, the inconsistency of the cathode and anode products caused additional separation costs. Therefore, the selection of anodic paired-reactions capable of directing the same product is a key measure to solve the problem. At the same time, this poses a challenge for the design of bifunctional electrodes suitable for redox coupling systems. Herein, we established a coupled system in which the glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) is paired with the formate production via CO 2 RR, and for the first time, we have calculated its advantages through thermodynamic analysis. Additionally, a Sn 76.8 Co 23.2 electrode featuring crystalline Sn/amorphous SnCo heterointerfaces was prepared utilizing a revolutionary one-step in-situ electrodeposition method. It was demonstrated that the abundant two-phase interfaces optimized the redistribution of electrons, and that electrons transfer from Sn atoms to Co atoms to favor the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates, thereby improving the catalytic capability of Sn 76.8 Co 23.2 in the CO 2 RR, GOR semi-reaction, and CO 2 RR//GOR coupled system. This work provides invaluable insights into the matching of reactants and products for co-electrolysis systems, as well as a meaningful idea for the design of bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Hydrogen, as the one of clean energy source, has the advantages of high energy density and carbon-free emission. Water electrolysis is one of the most promising ways to generate hydrogen, but the rather high energy required seriously hinders its widespread applications yet. In this study, we report an alkaline electrolyzer to implement energy-saving H 2 generation by coupling cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with anodic glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) other than oxygen evolution reaction , in which nickel-doped MoS 2 nanoparticles (Ni–MoS 2 NPs) has been developed as bifunctional electrocatalyst for HER and GOR. The electrolyzer only requires a cell voltage of 1.67 V to reach an electrolysis current density of 10 mA cm −2 , about 270 mV lower than the corresponding value in the traditional electrolyzer. Electrolytic H 2 generation with the assistance of biomass derived materials may open a new way for the future sustainable development.
