Simultaneous regulation on solvation shell and electrode interface for sustainable zinc-based flow batteries

Tao Xuan,Xusheng Cheng,Liwei Wang

The practical implementation of Zn-based flow batteries encounters the challenges associated with uneven deposition of Zn ions and undesirable side reactions. Here, a hybrid Zn-based electrolyte system composed of ZnBr 2 , ethylene glycol (EG), H 2 O and potassium gluconate (KGlu) is developed as anolyte to modulate the solvation structure and interface engineering for a sustainable Zn-based flow battery. The EG molecules could exclude water molecules outside the solvation structure, inhibiting the water-induced side reactions and Zn corrosion. Moreover, the incorporation of potassium gluconate constructs an artificial stable anionic interface for dendrite-free Zn deposition. Chemical stability and hydrogen evolution potential tests demonstrate that the activity of water molecules could be suppressed in the EG-containing hybrid electrolyte. Deposition morphologies and Zn//Zn symmetric flow battery tests also reveal that gluconate anions preferentially adsorbed on zinc anode could effectively facilitate uniform zinc deposition. As a result, the Zn-based flow battery with the proposed hybrid electrolyte delivers a stable cycling performance over 200 cycles and high reversibility with an average CE of over 97.4 % at 20 mA cm −2 , exhibiting a peak power density of 103.2 mW cm −2 . This work provides a universal electrolyte design strategy for realizing a sustainable Zn-based flow battery.

An artificial cell capable of signal transduction mediated by ADRB2 for the regulation of glycogenolysis

Liu Yanhao,Zhao Wan,Zhao Yingming,Zhang Xiangxiang,Zhao Jingjing,Li Shubin,Ren Yongshuo,Han Xiaojun

Bottom-up construction of artificial cells helps elucidate the working mechanism of cells. Signal transduction from extracellular to intracellular artificial cells is essential for autonomous artificial cells. It remains highly challenging to reconstitute G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling pathways to regulate downstream metabolism in artificial cells. Here, we reconstitute β2-adrenergic receptor, Gs subunit α and adenylate cyclase V into artificial cell membranes to enable signal transduction from extracellular isoproterenol (ISO) to intracellular cAMP (visualization via Epac1-cAMP probes). cAMP production is ISO dose-dependent, with a maximum amplification fold of 22.45 ± 2.14. By encapsulating the glycogenolytic pathway, cAMP activates protein kinase A, triggering phosphorylation of phosphorylase kinase and glycogen phosphorylase to convert glycogen to glucose-1-phosphate (G-1-P). G-1-P is further converted to 6-phosphogluconolactone accompanying with NADPH. ISO stimulation induces G-1-P and NADPH generation, achieving progressive signal amplification. The successful reconstitution of GPCR-mediated signaling pathway in artificial cells paves the way for developing autonomous artificial cells.

Ion-specific phase behaviors of gluconate aerosols regulated by alkali metal counter-cations: a supramolecular network stiffness perspective

Mengyun Shi,Wenjing Li,Shufeng Pang,Fei Zhao,Yun-Hong Zhang

Alkali cations govern the network stiffness of aerosols, thereby influencing phase transitions. • Na + yields a rigid matrix, delaying sulfate efflorescence to the hydration phase. • K + forms a looser matrix, exerting weaker inhibition on sulfate efflorescence. • Ion competition in mixtures facilitates early crystallization. The phase state of highly oxygenated organic aerosols influences their climate and multiphase chemical properties, yet the regulatory role of distinct alkali counter-cations on their supramolecular networks remains insufficiently constrained. We investigated the phase behavior and hygroscopicity of gluconate aerosols mixed with inorganic salts, utilizing macroscopic hygroscopic growth, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and dynamic rheology. We found that counter-cation identity closely correlates with network stiffness and phase-transition trajectories. Specifically, Na + likely promotes more compact ion–organic interactions, yielding a relatively rigid matrix (higher storage modulus) that can kinetically impede sulfate efflorescence. In sodium gluconate/ammonium sulfate mixtures, this resulted in no efflorescence during dehydration; instead, the particles effloresced at 40.1 % RH upon subsequent hydration. In contrast, K + appears less effective in forming compact network associations, leading to a lower-rigidity matrix, enhanced water uptake, and more accessible sulfate efflorescence during dehydration. Furthermore, competitive inter-ionic interactions in mixtures containing potassium gluconate, ammonium sulfate, and sodium sulfate can perturb the organic matrix, facilitating crystallization at a higher relative humidity of 57.1 %. These findings suggest that source-dependent cations can substantially modulate the equilibration kinetics of polyhydroxy aerosols, providing physical insights for improving aerosol phase-state parameterizations in atmospheric models. Comprehensive Screening and Evaluation of Anti-gout Activity of Plantago asiatica L. through Integrated In vivo and In vitro Methodologies

Gao Hong-Xue,Liu Zhi-Qiang,Hou Zong,Song Feng-Rui,Xing Jun-Peng,Zheng Zhong,Liu Shu

Objective: This study aimed to elucidate the active components and mechanisms of Plantago asiatica L. (PAL) in the treatment of gout. Materials and Methods: Based on its polarity, PAL was partitioned into three parts, P1, P2, and P3, through gradient elution using AB-8 macroporous resin columns. The primary constituents of these fractions include iridoids, phenylethanoid glucosides, and flavonoids. Subsequently, a comprehensive in vitro and in vivo screening and evaluation model was developed considering the fundamental pathological processes of gout, including the inhibition of uric acid (UA) production, augmentation of UA excretion, and anti-inflammatory effects. This model was used to analyze the anti-gout activity of P1, P2, P3, and the overall extracts derived from PAL. Results: All the PAL parts exhibited specific therapeutic properties as part of gout therapy. Specifically, the P2 part demonstrated the ability to diminish interleukin-1 beta levels, lower UA concentrations, suppress joint inflammation in rats, and restore abnormal parameters associated with gout, such as creatinine and urea nitrogen. These findings highlight the significant effect of P2 on gout treatment. Conclusions: Following a thorough assessment of the outcomes derived from diverse anti-gout experiments, P2 exhibited superior anti-gout properties compared to the remaining parts. P2 demonstrated a restorative effect on the aberrant parameters associated with gout, thereby comprehensively elucidating the therapeutic mechanism of P2 against gout. This study provides substantial evidence and serves as a reference for future investigations regarding the material foundation of PAL in gout treatment.

Designing hollow mesoporous carbon sphere for high-rate supercapacitor in water-in-salt electrolyte

Liping Feng,Huichao Liu,Wenyan Zan,Sidian Li,Yunzhen Chang,Ying Zhang,Wenjing Hou,Yun Zhao,Sheng Zhu,Gaoyi Han

The expansion of the operational voltage in supercapacitors (SCs) through the utilization of water-in-salt electrolytes (WISEs) has garnered considerable attention for achieving elevated energy density. However, the poor rate performance of assembled SCs persists due to the heightened viscosity of WISEs (e.g., 17.0 mol kg −1 NaClO 4 ), so designing the porous structure of electrode materials to improve the rate performance of SC in WISEs has become a research focus. In this study, we present a straightforward approach to fabricate hierarchical porous carbon spheres, designing to expedite ion infilling and transport within WISE-based SCs. The hollow porous carbon is synthesized via one-step pyrolysis process, wherein the decomposition of inner colloid particles yields gases, while the outer resorcinol–formaldehyde resin carbonizes to form a spherical shell. In the WISE of 17.0 mol kg −1 NaClO 4 , the resulting symmetric SCs exhibit an operational voltage of 2.6 V and significantly improved rate capability with a capacitance retention of 47.7 % at 100 A g −1 . Notably, the energy density can reach 31.0 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 2.4 kW kg −1 . Even under high power density conditions of 120.0 kW kg −1 , the energy density of 14.7 Wh kg −1 can remain. Additionally, the SC device manifests an impressive capacitance retention of 99.1 % after 20,000 cycles, showcasing exceptional cyclic stability. This research introduces a novel synthesis strategy for hierarchical porous carbon materials, enabling the development of high-rate SCs with both elevated energy density and power density.

Preparation of high density activated carbon by mechanical compression of precursors for compact capacitive energy storage

Qiqi Li,Su Zhang,Yuting Jiang,Linna Zhu,Nannan Guo,Jing Zhang,Yutong Li,Tong Wei,Zhuangjun Fan

Activated carbons are widely used as the electrode material for supercapacitors owing to their large surface area, moderate conductivity, and outstanding electrochemical stability. However, large-surface-area activated carbons usually show low density and poor volumetric energy storage performance, which is difficult to meet the development of devices miniaturization. Mechanical compression is a simple and effective method to improve the density of the activated carbons. However, most of the studies focus on mechanical compression of the as-prepared porous carbon materials. Preparation of high-density activated carbons by mechanical compression of the carbon precursors has been proposed. But the surface area and porous structure evolution, and the possible mechanism have rarely investigated. Herein, we propose a universal method to improve the density of the activated carbons by mechanical compression of the precursors before activation. The influence of mechanical compression on the surface area, porous structure, and capacitive energy storage performance of the activated carbons prepared by two typical methods, outside-in activation (carbon powder/KOH mixture) and homogeneous ion activation (pyrolysis of potassium-containing salts), are studied. Mechanical compression of the precursors can generally improve the activation reaction efficiency, as well as the density and volumetric capacitive performance of the activated carbons. However, the surface area and porous structure evolution mainly depend on the carbon precursor and pore-forming process. For outside-in activation, the surface area and porosity of the activated carbons show a first increasing and then decreasing trend with the increase of mechanical pressure. This is because mechanical compression enhances the contact between the carbon precursors and activator through eliminating the voids between particles, significantly improves the activation efficiency. For homogeneous ion activation, the surface area and porosity of activated carbons show a trend of decreasing first and then increasing. The reason is deduced as compressed precursors inhibit the rapid release of active gas molecules (H 2 O, CO 2 etc .) produced during pyrolysis. These gas molecules further participate in the activation etching reaction and promote the activation efficiency. The optimized sample shows high gravimetric and volumetric capacitances of 316 F g −1 /291 F cm −3 and 131 F g −1 /92 F cm −3  at 1 A g −1 in aqueous and organic electrolytes, respectively. This work provides a simple way for design and preparation of activated carbons with large surface area and high density.

Establishment of Polydopamine-Modified HK-2 Cell Membrane Chromatography and Screening of Active Components from Plantago asiatica L.

Hongxue Gao,Zhiqiang Liu,Fengrui Song,Junpeng Xing,Zhong Zheng,Zong Hou,Shu Liu

Cell membrane chromatography (CMC) has been widely recognized as a highly efficient technique for in vitro screening of active compounds. Nevertheless, conventional CMC approaches suffer from a restricted repertoire of cell membrane proteins, making them susceptible to oversaturation. Moreover, the binding mechanism between silica gel and proteins primarily relies on intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which is inherently unstable and somewhat hampers the advancement of CMC. Consequently, this investigation aimed to establish a novel CMC column that could augment protein loading, enhance detection throughput, and bolster binding affinity through the introduction of covalent bonding with proteins. This study utilizes polydopamine (PDA)-coated silica gel, which is formed through the self-polymerization of dopamine (DA), as the carrier for the CMC column filler. The objective is to construct the HK-2/SiO2-PDA/CMC model to screen potential therapeutic drugs for gout. To compare the quantity and characteristics of Human Kidney-2 (HK-2) cell membrane proteins immobilized on SiO2-PDA and silica gel, the proteins were immobilized on both surfaces. The results indicate that SiO2-PDA has a notably greater affinity for membrane proteins compared to silica gel, resulting in a significant improvement in detection efficiency. Furthermore, a screening method utilizing HK-2/SiO2-PDA/CMC was utilized to identify seven potential anti-gout compounds derived fromPlantago asiaticaL. (PAL). The effectiveness of these compounds was further validated using an in vitro cell model of uric acid (UA) reabsorption. In conclusion, this study successfully developed and implemented a novel CMC filler, which has practical implications in the field.

Development of sulfur doped carbon quantum dots for highly selective and sensitive fluorescent detection of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions in oral ferrous gluconate samples

Fuyou Du,Zhenfang Cheng,Wei Tan,Lingshun Sun,Guihua Ruan

Sulfur-doped carbon quantum dots (S-CQDs) with stable blue fluorescence were synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal method by using ascorbic acid and thioglycolic acid as carbon and sulfur sources. The prepared S-CQDs exhibited a sensitive and selective response to Fe 3+ ions in comparison with Fe 2+ and other metal ions , In the presence of adequate H 2 O 2 , Fe 2+ was completely transformed to Fe 3+ that is the determinable form of iron ions , and the difference in the change of the fluorescence intensity of S-CQDs before and after adding H 2 O 2 was used for detection of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions, respectively. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the fluorescence intensity of S-CQDs gradually decreased with increasing of Fe 3+ concentration ranging from 0 to 200 μM. Good linearity was achieved over the range of 0-200 μM. The detection limit of the developed method was 0.050 μM for Fe 3+ . The recoveries of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ spiked in real samples ranged from 98.2% to 112.4%. Finally, the proposed S-CQDs integrated with Fenton system was applied to the detection of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions in oral ferrous gluconate samples, which presents potential applications in the speciation and determination of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions in complex samples.

Construction of self-template 2D porous carbon nano sheets (2D PCNSs) from potassium gluconate (C6H11O7K) for the efficient adsorption of dye contaminant

Li Chen,Jun Sun,Jiangdong Dai,Tongfan Hao,Xiaohui Dai,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan

Convenient adsorption and removal of dye contaminants still remain a problem for now. In this article, self-templated 2D porous carbon nanosheets (2D PCNSs) with laminar structure were constructed from potassium gluconate. Functioning as support framework and precursor of the porous laminar structure, potassium gluconate was proved a desirable porous carbon origin innovatively with low-cost and accessibility. The morphology, elemental composition and textural property were characterized via multiple analytical methods. The presented 2D PCNSs possessed high specific surface area and large pore volumes. And its adsorption capacity towards methylene blue was systematically investigated by batch experiments in both thermodynamics and kinetics models. The adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic, and in well coincided with the model of Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption process was defined as a pseudo-second-order kinetics model under the control of surface and intra-particle diffusion mechanisms with a maximum adsorption capacity up to 688.76 mg/g. In addition, the reusability suggested it could be utilized as an efficient adsorbent for MB contaminants in wastewater treatment.

Evaluation of Renewable Gluconate Salts as Draw Solutes in Forward Osmosis Process

Qingwu Long,Guangxian Qi,Yan Wang

Draw solution is one important factor to determine the separation performance in forward osmosis (FO) process. However, most draw solutions face severe reverse solute leakage and energy-intensive recovery problems, which lead to a significant performance decline. Exploration of renewable natural compounds as draw solutes may effectively break out the predicament of most current draw solution. In this work, a series of renewable, no-toxic gluconate salts are systematically investigated as draw solutes for FO applications. Their physicochemical properties are investigated systematically and related to the FO performance. The result shows that 2 M Glu-K draw solution may generate a comparable water flux (∼23.17 LMH) to that of NaCl solution, but with a significantly lower solute leakage (∼1.09 gMH), with DI water as the feed solution under PRO mode. Glu-K draw solution is further applied for juice reconcentration with a reasonable good performance achieved. Draw solution recovery by nanofiltration (NF) is also performed. This study provides useful information on using natural draw solutes in the FO process and facilitates its practical applications in the food processing field.

Inhibitor-regulated corrosion strategy towards synthesizing cauliflower-like amorphous RuFe-hydroxides as advanced hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts

Xupo Liu,Ran Wang,Ye Chen,Cuicui Zhang,Xiaofeng Li,Xihui Wang,Jingru Zhang,Xiaofei Hao

Producing clean hydrogen energy by water electrolysis is considered as an effective route to solve the current energy and environmental problems. Herein, a facile inhibitor-regulated corrosion strategy is employed to synthesize efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. The corrosion inhibitor of D-sodium gluconate (SG) is adopted to slow down the serious reaction of iron foam (IF) in RuCl 3 aqueous solution. It is identified that the abundant hydroxy and carboxyl species of SG can compete with Cl − to adsorb on the IF surface to weaken the drastic reaction between Ru 3+ and IF, resulting in achieving uniform amorphous RuFe(OH) x corrosion layers composed of nanoparticle aggregations. Owing to the sufficient exposure of active sites and electronic interaction between Ru and Fe sites, the optimized catalyst exhibits excellent HER activity of requiring a lower potential of 91 mV to reach a current density of 100 mA cm −2 and maintains durable operation at 100 mA cm −2 for 30 h without obvious fluctuations. This work supplies a facile inhibitor-regulated corrosion strategy for designing efficient catalysts for water splitting application.
