Efficient Removal of Levofloxacin by Activated Persulfate with Magnetic CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 Nanocomposite: Characterization, Response Surface Methodology, and Degradation Mechanism

Junying Yang,Minye Huang,Shengsen Wang,Xiaoyun Mao,Yueming Hu,Xian Chen

In this study, a magnetic copper ferrite/montmorillonite-k10 nanocomposite (CuFe2O4/MMT-k10) was successfully fabricated by a simple sol-gel combustion method and was characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the Brunner–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For levofloxacin (LVF) degradation, CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 was utilized to activate persulfate (PS). Due to the relative high adsorption capacity of CuFe2O4/MMT-k10, the adsorption feature was considered an enhancement of LVF degradation. In addition, the response surface methodology (RSM) model was established with the parameters of pH, temperature, PS dosage, and CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 dosage as the independent variables to obtain the optimal response for LVF degradation. In cycle experiments, we identified the good stability and reusability of CuFe2O4/MMT-k10. We proposed a potential mechanism of CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 activating PS through free radical quenching tests and XPS analysis. These results reveal that CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 nanocomposite could activate the persulfate, which is an efficient technique for LVF degradation in water. Keywords:magnetic;copper ferrite;montmorillonite-k10;levofloxacin;persulfate;response surface methodology

NO oxidation over Fe-based catalysts supported on montmorillonite K10, γ-alumina and ZSM-5 with gas-phase H2O2

Rongji Cui,Suxia Ma,Jie Wang,Shujun Sun

The catalytic gas-phase H 2 O 2 oxidation of NO was achieved over Fe-based catalysts supported on montmorillonite K10, γ-alumina and ZSM-5. ESR tests illustrate that the three catalysts can catalyze decomposition of H 2 O 2 yielding highly reactive hydroxyl radicals , of which Fe/K10 has the fastest rate, followed by Fe/γ-alumina. Fe 3+ in Fe/K10 and Fe/γ-alumina show lower density of electron cloud due to a strong interaction between Fe 3+ and the support, which benefits the electron transfer from the H 2 O 2 to Fe 3+ , thus favoring the production of hydroxyl radicals. Fe species exist on the surface of Fe/K10 mainly in the form of Fe 2 O 3 , whereas Fe species of Fe/γ-alumina and Fe/ZSM-5 exist mainly in the form of Fe 3 O 4 , and it is found that Fe 2 O 3 is more active than Fe 3 O 4 in catalytic gas-phase H 2 O 2 oxidation of NO. Interestingly, Fe/ZSM-5 has the lowest efficiency in generating hydroxyl radicals, its NO removal efficiency is 90%, which is much higher than 47.5% for Fe/γ-alumina and 62.3% for Fe/K10. In-situ IR results suggested that Fe/ZSM-5 are dual functional in oxidation of NO, that is, whether both Fe ion sites and Brønsted acid sites collectively provide the catalytic functionality. In the meantime, a possible reaction mechanism on catalytic gas-phase H 2 O 2 oxidation of NO over Brønsted acid sites is proposed.

Nanoclay Modulates Cation Occupancy in Manganese Ferrite for Catalytic Antibacterial Treatment

Hao Wang,Muhammad Tariq Sarwar,Luyuan Tian,Wenxin Bao,Huaming Yang

Controllable preparation is the current frontier in the field of inorganic nanomaterial-based artificial enzymes (nanozymes). For ferrites, the factors affecting cation occupancy are very complex, making the modulation of cation occupancy extremely challenging. Herein, we report a new strategy to modulate the cation occupancy of manganese ferrite (MFO) based on the structural properties of nanoclay (i.e., montmorillonite K10). It demonstrates that montmorillonite K10 mainly changes the valence state and occupancy of manganese ions in manganese ferrite and not iron ions. K10 increases the proportion of Mn (II) in manganese ferrite and causes more manganese ions to migrate to the tetrahedral sites. As expected, the prepared new inorganic compound possesses excellent enzyme-like catalytic activities and antibacterial functional properties, which are attributed to Mn (II) accelerating Fe (III) reduction and hydroxyl radical formation. Furthermore, steady-state kinetic assays are used to study the reaction mechanism in detail. In vitro and in vivo antibacterial experiments show that the synthesized inorganic compounds exhibit satisfactory disinfection and wound skin recovery efficiencies. This work emphasizes the controllable preparation of new inorganic compounds with biomimetic activity and provides novel insight into the biological effects of inorganic nanomaterials.

Breaking through the pH Limitation of Fe1–xS Nanozymes Using Component-Modulated Coupled Nanoclay

Wenxin Bao,Luyuan Tian,Hao Wang,Aidong Tang,Huaming Yang

Overcoming the intrinsic low activity of most peroxidase mimics under neutral pH is crucial but still extremely challenging for the detection of disease markers in biological samples. Here, we chose nanoclay (i.e., montmorillonite K10, MK10) as a carrier to modulate the structure of Fe1–xS nanozyme components through an interfacial modulation strategy, aiming at breaking the neutral pH limitation of Fe1–xS. MK10 with abundant hydroxyl groups on its surface acts as a carrier to increase the ratio of Fe(II) and S(II−) content in surface Fe1–xS. We verify that Fe(II)-promoted surface hydroxyl radical generation and S(II−)-promoted regeneration of Fe(II) play key roles in endowing peroxidase-like activity to Fe1–xS at neutral pH. As expected, Fe1–xS/MK10 exhibited 11-fold higher Vmax and 52-fold higher catalytic efficiency than bare Fe1–xS. As a proof of concept, the sensor constructed based on Fe1–xS/MK10 achieved colorimetric detection of xanthine under neutral conditions with a linear range of 5–300 μM and a limit of detection of 2.49 μM. Finally, we achieved highly sensitive detection of xanthine in serum using the constructed biosensor. Our contribution is the novel use of a nanoclay-mediated interfacial modulation strategy for boosting the peroxidase-mimicking activity and breaking the pH limitation, which contributes to the in situ detection of disease markers by nanozymes under physiological conditions.
