Nature-inspired design: p- toluenesulfonic acid-assisted hydrothermally engineered wood for solar steam generation

Xianquan Zhang,Lintao Yang,Ben Dang,Jiabo Tao,Shujun Li,Shuangliang Zhao,Wei Li,Jian Li,Zhijun Chen,Shouxin Liu

Wood-based solar steam generation devices (W-SSGDs) have enormous potential to produce pure water by distillation since they are sustainable, easily prepared and green. However, most W-SSGDs described so far have low solar-to-thermal efficiency (<1.5 kg m −2  h −1 ) under 1 standard sun irradiation. Inspired by nature, we have now engineered a W-SSGD with improved solar steam generation efficiency by using p -toluenesulfonic acid ( p -TsOH)-assisted hydrothermal treatment . After treatment, the wood lumens became more hydrophilic and were reduced in diameter from 40-60 μm to 10–20 μm. These rationally introduced changes lowered the enthalpy of vaporization of water and greatly enhanced the capacity of the wood for transportation of water. The as-prepared W-SSGD had an evaporation rate of 2.2 kg m −2  h −1 and an efficiency of 87%, which, to the best of our knowledge, are the highest reported values for a W-SSGD.

Simple post-treatment of cotton fabric for efficient personal moisture management

Maorong Zheng,Jiatai Gu,Hongxia Zhang,Xinyang He,Mantang He,Liming Wang,Xiaohong Qin

Wet comfort is an important indicator for evaluating human wearing comfort, and personal moisture management fabrics can quickly transfer sweat from the skin surface to meet the human body's requirements for wet comfort. Although cotton fabrics have an excellent water absorption capacity, the inability of moisture to transfer quickly causes the fabrics to cling to the skin and causes discomfort. Here we demonstrate personal moisture management cotton fabric by two-step grafting treatments, which are relatively simple and usually do not fall off as easily as a simple coating process. Moreover, unlike traditional double-layer or sandwich structures that absorb water and grow heavy, the fabric's quick-drying qualities are accomplished by expanding the area of water evaporation. According to the results of liquid moisture management and water evaporation rate tests, this fabric's moisture diffusion radius is 5 mm larger than that of pure cotton fabrics, and its evaporation rate can reach 0.2082 g/(m2 · d). In addition, it is also suitable for high-volume apparel fabrics. This work paves the way for personal moisture management cotton fabric.

An arch-bridge photothermal fabric from hydrophobic warp hair and hydrophilic weft grooved cellulose fiber for efficient waster evaporation and solar seawater desalination

Yiyang Che,Chao Duan,Guodong Tian,Kang Yang,Shasha Che,Yuanmei Liu,Yonghao Ni

Solar seawater evaporation technology plays a crucial role in alleviating the global freshwater scarcity crisis. However, some deficiencies involving complex preparation process, excessive solar heat loss and low evaporation rate have impaired its further application and extension. Therefore, this work proposes a facile and scalable strategy based on wet spinning and shuttle weaving technologies to fabricate a sustainable photothermal fabric with unique warp-weft and arch-bridge structures for the simulated seawater desalination. It is hypothesized that 1) the hydrophobic modified waste hairs with abundant melanin can serve as natural photothermal evaporative warp to finalize an efficient photothermal conversion; 2) the hydrophilic wet-spun fibers with numerous grooves can function as water conductive weft to reduce the evaporation enthalpy of water, thus facilitating water transmission rate and the solar evaporation rate; 3) the arch-bridge and warp-weft designs of the photothermal fabric can allow a lower solar heat loss to deliver an efficient solar water evaporation. Consequently, under a simulated sunlight condition of 1 kW·m −2 , the evaporation rate of the fabric in deionized water and 3.5 wt% NaCl solution can reach 2.34 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 1.91 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , respectively. Therefore, this work has successfully fabricated a sustainable arch-bridge photothermal fabric with excellent evaporation rate, providing an alternative insight for solar interface evaporation fabrics.

An intelligent water production strategy: Controllable enhancement of evaporation rate through shape memory Janus foam

Wenqing Cao,Ye Tian,Yue Liu,Na Liu,Shuaiheng Zhao,Yingqi Qiu,Lin Feng

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is an eco-friendly and promising approach to address freshwater shortage. However, the intricate preparation process and low evaporation rate of evaporators limit its further practical applications. Herein, an ingenious design strategy is proposed for a shape memory Janus (SMJ) foam to controllably increase the evaporation rate. By sequentially adhering trans -1,4-Polyisoprene (TPI) and selectively modifying sodium alginate (SA) / AlCl 3 on PU substrate, a three-dimensional (3D) porous foam structure is conveniently constructed, which features a hydrophobic layer with efficient photothermal conversion and a superhydrophilic layer with sufficient water supply. Under varying light intensities, the evaporation rate of optimized SMJ foam exhibits a linear escalation through shape memory compression, specifically from 1.8 kg m −2 h −1 to 3.2 kg m −2 h −1 as the compression ratio increases from 0 to 80 % under one solar irradiation. Due to its large-pore porosity, the photothermal layer increases surface area density and gradually generates analogous vertical channels to enhance absorbance during compression, thereby improving the photothermal conversion effect and optimizing thermal management. Moreover, thanks to the Janus structure, the self-floating and salt-resisting properties of SMJ foam guarantee stable and efficient evaporation in complicated environments. This work introduces a novel strategy for promoting the evaporation rate, intelligence, and industrial application of solar-driven interfacial evaporators.

Non-destructive strategy to extract sustainable helix and high-strength Musa core fibers for rapid water conduction and evaporation

Dandan Xie,Xiaochuan Yang,Hang Wang,Qiuxia Fu,Fayun Wei,Nuo Liu,Hailou Wang,Guangyu Zhang,Jiamu Dai,Chunhong Zhu,Wei Zhang

The reuse and development of natural waste resources is a hotspots and challenges in the research of new fiber materials and the resolution of environmental concern globally. Herein, this study aimed to develop a simple and direct manual extraction process to extract Musa core fibers (MCFs) for rapid water conduction and evaporation. Through simple processes such as ring cutting and stretching, this green and non-destructive inside-out extraction strategy enabled Musa fibers to be naturally and harmlessly degummed from natural Musa stems, with good maintenance of the fiber structure and highly helical morphology. The extracted fibers are composed of regularly and closely arranged cellulose nanofibrils in the shape of ribbon spirally arranged multi-filaments, and the single filament is about 2.65 μm. The high-purity fibers exhibit ultra-high tensile strength under a non-destructive extraction process, and the ultimate tensile strength in dry state is as high as 742.95 MPa. The tensile strength is affected by the number of fiber bundles, which shows that tensile strength and tensile modulus is higher than those of vascular bundle fibers in dry or wet condition. In addition, the MCFs membrane indicates good water conductivity, with a water absorption height of 50 mm for the sample in only 60 s. Moreover, the water evaporation rate of MCFs reaches 1.37 kg m −2  h −1 in 30 min, which shows that MCFs have excellent water conductivity and evaporation rate compared with ordinary cotton fibers . These results indicate that MCFs have great potential in replacing the use of chemical methods to extract fibers from vascular bundles, providing an effective way to achieve sustainability in quick-drying applications, as well as in the sustainable development of natural waste resources.

Surface Roughness Engineering for High-Salt-Tolerant Solar Evaporator with Enhanced Efficiency in Sustainable Desalination

Mengxue Zhang,Laigang Hu,Yang Guo,Wenhao Wu,Daohui Lin,Juan Wang,Kun Yang

Graphical A 3D column-shaped evaporator is introduced to construct spatially separated crystallization sites by KAC coating, which effectively prevents the connections of salt crystals. This coating creates a rough surface with abundant KAC protrusions, achieving an evaporation rate of 8.18 kg m −2 h −1 for a 15 wt% NaCl solution under 1 kW m −2 solar radiation. The accumulation of dense crystal layers on solar evaporators compromises the performances by reducing light absorption efficiency and obstructing water transport channels, ultimately diminishing evaporation rate. To mitigate this issue, spatially separated crystallization sites can be engineered on the evaporator surface to disrupt salt adhesion and prevent dense layers formation. In this study, a 3D column-shaped wood evaporator (KOH-activated carbon- delignified wood (KAC-DW)) is developed by coating DW with KAC. The KAC coating creates microstructured surface featuring abundant protrusions (≈144 mm −2 , each 20 μm in height), which effectively inhibit salt crystal adhesion. Under 1 kW m −2 solar radiation with a 15 wt% NaCl solution, the KAC-DW evaporator achieves an impressive water evaporation rate of 8.18 kg m −2 h −1 over 96 h (0 m s −1 wind speed)—more than double the performance of uncoated DW (3.91 kg m −2 h −1 ). This enhancement stems from two key mechanisms: 1) the KAC protrusions prevent dense crystal layer formation, preserving open surface channels for evaporation, and 2) they promote the growth of loose salt crystals, thereby expanding the effective evaporation area and further boosting the evaporation rate.

A robust and renewable solar steam generator for high concentration dye wastewater purification

Xuan Wang,Kang Liu,Zubin Wang,Liping Heng,Lei Jiang

As an eco-friendly and sustainable technology, the solar-driven interfacial evaporation for water purification garners widespread attention. In the field of dye wastewater purification, some solar steam generators with catalytic degradation have been developed. However, they can only deal with ultra-low concentration dye wastewater because of their poor degradability, which would lead to the decrease of the evaporation rate caused by dye blockage when treating high concentration dye wastewater. Meanwhile, the complex external environment puts forward a higher requirement to device robustness. Therefore, fabricating a robust and renewable solar steam generator for high concentration dye wastewater purification is still a challenge. Here, an Au/ceramic solar steam generator with renewability and robustness was fabricated for dye wastewater purification. This generator can achieve an evaporation rate of 5.52 kg m−2 h−1 by rational T-shaped thermal management and timely vapor diffusion with breeze. It can efficiently purify various kinds of wastewater with a wide range of dye concentrations. Furthermore, this generator exhibits good pH stability, thermostability and robust mechanical properties, which are beneficial to meet complex situations in practical applications. Meanwhile, the blocked generators after long-term purification of high concentration wastewater can be regenerated by calcination, solving the decrease of the evaporation rate caused by organic accumulation. This work shows great potential for organic wastewater purification in further practical applications.

Solar-driven hydrovoltaic-pyroelectric hybrid generator for efficiently harvesting water transformation energy

Haitao Li,Hui Cheng,Bingquan Wu,Wenxing Wang,Yan Zhang,Jie Han

Manipulation of water for power generation has garnered significant research interest as it is renewable, sustainable, and a spontaneous form of energy production. However, energy conversion efficiency has remained constrained, primarily attributed to the slow evaporation rates of water and limited energy recovery strategies. Herein, we demonstrate a two-pronged hybrid water transformation energy harvester that strategically integrates solar-thermal effects with pyroelectric effects to boost water transformation and its associated energy extraction. The core of our unique ensemble consists of two layers: the upper layer features a composite film comprising carbon black (CB) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) coated onto bamboo fibers (CB/PVDF@BFP), which realizes solar-thermal and hydrovoltaic effects owing to the excellent solar-thermal and electrical activities of CB while the bottom layer is PVDF film to simultaneously generate pyroelectricity. Notably, the optimized CB/PVDF@BFP achieves a maximal temperature of ∼78 ℃ and an open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) and a short-circuit current ( I SC ) of 0.33 V and 1.6 μA, respectively. Consequently, we achieved a maximal output power density of 64 μW/m 2 under one sun (25 ℃), surpassing the output under dark conditions by ∼92 %, and exceeding most similar designs. Moreover, the CB/PVDF@BFP film exhibits a maximal oscillation of ∼0.5 ℃/s and an evaporation rate of 1.44 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under optimized conditions, owing to the strategic inclusion of hydrophilic BFP. Concurrently, our ensemble also generates a maximum V OC , I SC and output power density of pyroelectricity of ∼80 V, 0.4 μA, and 7.4 mW/m 2 (∼25.9-fold higher than the dark state), which is > ∼3.9-time higher than the similar reports, respectively. As proof of concept, our hybrid design can successfully power various household electronic devices (such as LED lights, electronic watches etc.) by storing the harvested energy into capacitors, thus showcasing its potential for practical applications. Our ensemble not only demonstrates remarkable performance but also lays the foundation for innovative concepts in the development of emerging hybrid micro/nano-generators, offering an avenue for harnessing ubiquitous ambient energy.

Ultra-high salt-resistant eggplant carbon evaporator: Evaporation performance and salt-resistance mechanism

Lele Li,Qinqin Yang,Xianhong Zheng,Lei Zhou,Siew Chun Low,Jianghui Zhao,Zhi Liu

The coupling of salt resistance and high evaporation performance for sustainable clean water production has long posed a challenge in high-salinity water evaporation. Herein, biomass eggplant carbon (EC) aerogel was developed combining the advantages of ultra-high salt resistance and high evaporation rates. The EC aerogel achieved an evaporation rate of 1.60 kg·m −2 ·h −1 when evaporating 25 wt% saline water over a duration of 600 min under one sun irradiation, demonstrating both high evaporation performance and outstanding salt resistance. The experimental and numerical simulation results confirmed the ultra-high salt resistance attributed to: (1) the rapid water transport rates (21 mm·s −1 within 1 s and 7.5 mm·s −1 within 5 s) induced by the strong capillary action, which maintained the salt concentration at a lower level on the aerogel surface, (2) the fast water backflow capacity carried away the concentrated salt solution close to the EC surface to bulk water in a timely manner, and (3) the highly porous, interconnected millimeter-sized holes in the aerogel shortened the ion transport path, thereby enhancing the water supply/backflow properties. The rapid water replenishment and fast water backflow capacities synergistically kept the saline water on the EC surface below the salt precipitation concentration, endowing the EC aerogel with superior salt-resistant properties. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of high salt-resistant properties and inspires materials engineering with rapid water supply/backflow, as well as their practical applications in clean water generation from hypersaline water.

Cactus-inspired moisture harvesting for sustainable and efficient high salinity desalination

Can Ge,Xianzhang Wu,Jiugang Li,Keshuai Liu,Duo Xu,Chong Gao,Yingcun Liu,Ping Sun,Ze Chen,Jian Fang

Water scarcity has become a global issue that needs to be addressed urgently. Solar steam generation (SSG) is a promising technology to alleviate the water crisis through desalination and condensation. However, the stability and efficiency of SSG can be seriously impacted by salt accumulation after prolonged operation. Common salt rejection schemes are only applicable for low-salinity (<10 wt%) desalination. In this work, inspired by the cactus's fog-capturing feature, the atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) function is integrated by an interlocked braided fibrous framework (IBFF) to absorb moisture for sustainable salt dilution during high salinity (20 wt%) desalination. The loop-pile density/height of IBFF is regulated to mimic the cactus roots/spines with different architectures, thus optimizing the water absorption/moisture harvesting performance. The excellent moisture-induced salt dilution ability ensures efficient and sustainable high salinity desalination performance over cyclic operation, with an exceptional evaporation rate of up to 3.11 kg m −2 ·h −1 under 1 sun radiation. Overall, this new approach offers a practical possibility for durable and competitive high salinity desalination with a continuous water/moisture supply.

Biodegradable hydrogel with excellent portability, stability and anti-pollution performance in solar-driven seawater desalination

Miao Sun,Linyan Yang,Xu Du,Yuan Gao,Xinghai Zhou,Baozhong Sun,Lihua Lyu

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology holds great potential for efficiently utilizing solar energy to convert untapped water sources into clean water. This study developed a cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) hydrogel-based evaporator (PCC) using low-cost wood pulp cellulose as the raw material. The experimental results revealed that the PCC hydrogel evaporator achieved a water evaporation rate of 1.61 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under 1 sun irradiation (solar intensity of 1 kW·m −2 ). Assisted by the three-dimensional interconnected hydrophilic network, the hydrogel exhibited excellent water supply capabilities, with water transport dominating within the hydrogel, enabling continuous steam generation from seawater. And the water layer formed by the super-hydrophilic pore wall structure was also beneficial to activating water, promoting the diffusion of high-concentration salt water, and enhancing the underwater oil repellent ability. After multiple compression-recovery performance tests, the PCC maintained stable evaporation performance, which greatly enhanced portability during use. In addition, the application of PCC evaporators in the fields of seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and agricultural irrigation had shown excellent results, confirming the potential application value of this evaporator. Combined with its environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and other advantages, it had broad development prospects.

All-In-One Evaporators for Efficient Solar-Driven Simultaneous Collection of Water and Electricity

Can Ge,Duo Xu,Heng Du,Xiaohan Zhang,Zheheng Song,Haoyue Zhao,Ze Chen,Beibei Song,Zhuoer Shen,Chong Gao,Guilong Yan,Weilin Xu,Jian Fang

The shortage of fossil fuels and freshwater resources has become a serious global issue. Using solar energy to extract clean water with a photothermal conversion technology is a green and sustainable desalination method. Integrated electricity generation during the desalination process maximizes energy utilization efficiency. Herein, a solar-driven steam and electricity generation (SSEG) system based on an all-in-one evaporator is prepared via a scalable technology. Carbon black is selected as the absorber for solar energy harvesting as well as the functional substance for simultaneous electricity generation. Fabric substrate with flexible structure, porous channel, and capillary effect is vital for directional brine supply, multiple solar absorption, and thermal management. The high evaporation rate (1.87 kg m −2 h −1 ) and voltage output (324 mV) can be achieved with an all-in-one device. The stable electricity output can be maintained over 40000 s. The SSEG performance remains constant after 15 operation cycles or 20 wash cycles. The integrated device balances excellent effectiveness and practicality, providing a viable path for clean desalination and electricity generation.
