Tough, durable and saline-tolerant CNT@Gel-nacre nanocomposite for interfacial solar steam generation

Yang Yang,Yuan He,Sihui Yang,Diandian Dong,Jingjing Zhang,Jiansen Ding,Jingwen Zhang,Yong Mei Chen

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation materials based on nanocomposite hydrogels have emerged for seawater desalination . Nevertheless, the issue of mechanical degradation derived from the swelling behavior of hydrogel is often seriously underestimated, which strongly hinders the practical application for long-term solar vapor generation, especially in high-salinity brine. Herein, a novel CNT@Gel-nacre with enhanced capillary pumping design has been proposed and fabricated for tough and durable solar-driven evaporator through uniformly doping carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the tough gel-nacre. Particularly, the salting out process gives rise to volume shrinkage and phase separation of polymer chains, endowing the nanocomposite hydrogel with significantly enhanced mechanical properties while simultaneously rendering more compact microchannels for water transportation, boosting the capillary pumping. Based on this unique design, the gel-nacre nanocomposite exhibits outstanding mechanical performances (13.41 MPa strength , 55.60 MJ m −3 toughness), especially mechanical durability in high salinity brine for long-term service. Furthermore, excellent water evaporation rate of 1.31 kg m -2 h −1 and conversion efficiency of 93.5% in 3.5 wt% sodium chloride solution, as well as stable cycling without salt accumulation can be achieved. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for achieving solar-driven evaporator with superior mechanical properties and durability even in brine environment, showing huge potentials in long-term seawater desalination.

Evaporation Rate and Kinetic Mechanism of Lead Sulfide Under Vacuum

Yang Huan,Meng Chaosong,Wei Xiaohui,Xiong Heng,Kong Xiangfeng,Yang Bin,Xu Baoqiang,Dong Zhaowang,He Yuhong

Lead sulfide (PbS) has substantial potential for applications in many fields, such as optical devices and solar cells. Although PbS can be obtained from complex lead-antimony sulfide ores by vacuum distillation, the evaporation mechanism of PbS under vacuum is still unclear. Herein, the evaporation kinetics of PbS at 973 K to 1173 K and 5 to 1000 Pa were investigated using a vacuum thermogravimetric furnace. The practical evaporation rate of PbS was obtained through linear and nonlinear fitting of the experimental data compared with the original theoretical evaporation rate and corrected for the Langmuir maximum evaporation coefficient. The evaporation coefficients and critical pressures of PbS at 973 K, 1023 K, 1073 K, 1123 K, and 1173 K were 0.5225, 0.4056, 0.2080, 0.1995, and 0.1007 as well as 12.49, 16.67, 20.83, 24.19, and 30.15 Pa, respectively. Experimental results indicate that the evaporation rate conforms to the logistic nonlinear model, and the critical pressure is positively correlated with temperature. This paper provides a kinetic data base for PbS vacuum evaporation and also provides a reference for improving the process conditions and production equipment parameters of PbS vacuum distillation. Meanwhile, it improves and develops the theory and practice of vacuum distillation for the preparation of high-purity sulfides and fills the gap of basic kinetic data of nonferrous sulfides.

Biomass-derived photothermal carbon aerogel for efficient solar-driven seawater desalination

Huiyu Duan,Mengxue Wang,Ziwei Zhang,Jianzheng Zhen,Weiyang Lv

Solar-driven interface evaporation is an effective method to produce fresh water to alleviate the shortage of water resources. However, there are still challenges in preparing photothermal conversion materials with high evaporation rate , high photothermal conversion efficiency and low cost. Herein, a 3D carbon aerogel with excellent photothermal conversion performance was prepared by using environmental-friendly biomass materials as the matrix. The hydrophilic 3D photothermal carbon aerogel with low thermal conductivity was prepared by depositing polydopamine and loading Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) on the surface of bacterial cellulose nanofibers. The deposition of PDA improved the mechanical properties and hydrophilicity of carbon aerogel, and the introduction of CuNPs further enhanced the photothermal conversion performance of carbon aerogel. Interestingly, the side temperature of 3D carbon aerogel was lower than the ambient temperature in the evaporation process, which could absorb energy from the environment and significantly improve the photothermal conversion efficiency, giving rise to the impressive water evaporation rate (2.07 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ) and photothermal conversion efficiency (115.36%) of 3D carbon aerogel under 1 sun. Moreover, the prepared 3D carbon aerogel had excellent purification effect on seawater, strong acid/alkali and dye solution, demonstrating its broad application prospect in the field of solar-driven seawater desalination.

Mineral scaling behavior in typical salt-resistant solar interfacial desalination: Edge-preferential crystallization vs. enhanced convection

Yuanlu Xu,Yanling Peng,Bowen Lv,Chengwen Song,Zaijin You,Yanming Liu,Xinfei Fan

The burgeoning solar interfacial evaporation (SIE) technology reveals enormous prospect to address the global freshwater crisis, but its application might be limited by a grossly neglected problem of inorganic salt scaling. Herein, based on the carbon nanotubes (CNTs)@carbon black (CB)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) evaporators, the scaling behavior and its influence on the SIE performance were investigated systematically in the two typical anti-salt modes, including the edge-preferential crystallization (T-type mode) and the enhanced convection with vertically aligned vessels (EC-type mode). The results revealed that the scaling occurred easily in both modes when only Ca 2+ and SO 4 2− co-existed in the feed water. Meanwhile, in the T-type mode, the scaling aggravated the NaCl crystallization, resulting in a coverage of NaCl crystals on the whole evaporator surface. For a high salt concentration (10.0 wt% NaCl) with SI (Ca 2+ +SO 4 2− ) = −0.13, the evaporation rate seriously decreased to ∼ 12.6% of its initial value after 12 h. On the contrary, the scaling behavior was significantly suppressed in the presence of Na + and Cl − ions in the EC-type mode. Furthermore, the slight scaling presented a negligible effect on the NaCl accumulation, which ensured a stable evaporation rate of 2.58 ± 0.10 kg m −2 h −1 under the same condition (10.0 wt% NaCl and SI of −0.13) for even 12 h irradiation under 2.0 sun. Therefore, it can be emphasized that developing novel evaporators not only requires a good anti-salt ability, but also possesses an excellent resistance to scaling for the practical application of SIE in the future.

Defects in In2O3/TiO2 composite boosting photothermal conversion for water purification and electricity generation

Peng Xiang,Congming Tang,Kai Ma,Xinli Li

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation for sustainable production of clean water from seawater and organic wastewater is viewed as a cutting-edge and practical technology to solve the shortage of fresh water. Here, we provide a novel strategy for constructing oxygen vacancy-rich In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite to apply in water purification . It is found that oxygen vacancy enhances light absorbance, reduces light reflection, and decreases the thermal conductivity , being beneficial for photothermal conversion and heat confinement. On the other hand, oxygen vacancy-rich In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite offers an excellent photocatalytic degradation, which can improve the quality of the purified water and keep surface and interface clean, and thus enhance durability of photothermal material. To compare with In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 , In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 * with rich oxygen vacancies markedly enhances the evaporation rate of pure water from 1.04 to 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 sun illumination , corresponding photothermal conversion efficiencies of 58.6% and 90.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the evaporator constructed with In 2 O 3 -TiO 2 * displayed 1.47 and 1.49 kg m −2 h −1 for seawater and lake water , respectively, close to pure water under 1 sun illumination. Besides, this evaporator also offered an excellent purification and photocatalytic degradation for organic wastewater during the solar-driven evaporation. Importantly, this evaporator also could synergistically generate electricity, achieving a maximum electrical power of 1.23 W m −2 under 1 sun. This work demonstrates the preponderance of the oxygen vacancy-rich material, and expands the application of the defected In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 composite in solar-driven interfacial evaporation.

Water management by hierarchical structures for highly efficient solar water evaporation

Yukun Sun,Xupeng Zong,Dan Qu,Ge Chen,Li An,Xiayan Wang,Zaicheng Sun

Solar water evaporation is a sustainable and efficient way to produce fresh water. Identifying highly efficient photothermal materials is an important step for achieving high evaporation rates. However, the effects of the water interfacial area are rarely paid any attention, although a few reports have demonstrated high evaporation rates from micro-/nanostructured devices. In this work, we introduce a new term, water mass per unit surface area (WMUA), to connect the water mass and interfacial area. We can regulate WMUA using different commercial porous materials to realize water management in devices, which further affects the evaporation rates. The optimized device is composed of suedette sponge, filter paper, and polydopamine as the water-transportation, water-restrictive, and photothermal materials, respectively, and it achieves an evaporation rate of 1.8 kg m−2 h−1 and energy efficiency of ∼92%. This presents a new strategy for the rational design of device structures and the promotion of evaporation rates, pushing this field into new areas.

Biomimetic heat-localized and solar absorption-enhanced hollow structural nanofibrous membrane for clean water production from saline water and dye wastewater

Jianghui Zhao,Wanlong Li,Yiling Shi,Xianhong Zheng,Quan Feng,Siew Chun Low,Soon Huat Tan,Zhi Liu

The rational design of material structures can be an effective approach to enhance the performance of solar-driven clean water production. In this study, a hollow structural nanofibrous membrane was developed by mimicking the hollow structure of polar bear hair using coaxial electrospinning. The shell layer consisted of carbon nanoparticles (C NPs) decorated CuO nanosheets (C@CuO), that exhibited photothermal conversion capacity. Meanwhile, the core layer containing hydrophilic polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was eliminated to generate the hollow structure. The C NPs enhanced the membrane’s light absorption to increase thermal energy harvesting, while the CuO nanosheets improved the membrane’s wettability enhancing the water supply. Furthermore, the hollow structure limited air convection, prevented heat conduction, and minimized heat radiation, enabling heat localization to be achieved inside the membrane to suppress heat loss during evaporation. For 3.5 wt% saline water and actual dye wastewater, the C@CuO nanofibrous membrane achieved high evaporation rates of 1.36 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 1.31 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , respectively, under 1 sun illumination. Moreover, even after continuous 6-h evaporation tests, the evaporation rate of the C@CuO membrane remained virtually unchanged, highlighting its long-term stability with regard to salt resistance in real-world applications. Additionally, the remarkable flexibility of the C@CuO membrane offers convenience during operation and guarantees dimensional stability when it is subjected to external stresses. These discoveries should inspire subsequent research on developing delicate architectural materials and exploring their potential applications in various fields, including energy generation, clean water production, and thermal insulation.

Enhancing the sustainability of interfacial evaporation to mitigate solar intermittency via phase change thermal storage

Jingrui Lan,Wenpeng Hong,Changyuan Dong,Huixin Zhang,Bizhou Hu,Lei Zhang,Yan Li,Xiaojuan Niu,Haoran Li

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation is a low-carbon footprint strategy for addressing global water scarcity. However, the operation of the evaporator requires continuity of solar radiation. Herein, the key to overcoming the intermittency of sunlight lies in utilizing the heat storage/release cycle of phase change materials. Additionally, the synergistic effect of high thermal conductivity materials and increased heat transfer area addresses the nonuniform spatial temperature within the heat storage device caused by the low thermal conductivity of molten paraffin. Although the heat transferred to the paraffin reduces the evaporation rate under illumination, the thermal storage/release capacity of paraffin increases the evaporation mass by 171.5% in darkness. Ultimately, after one light–dark cycle, the total evaporation mass over the entire period increased by 11.5%. Finally, although paraffin undergoes sensible and latent heat absorption and release across various temperature ranges during multiple light–dark cycles and prolonged operation, the phase change delays at different internal locations still ensure stable dark-state evaporation compensation for the evaporator, thereby enhancing the sustainability of the evaporation process.

Photothermal evaporation characteristics of magnetic rGO/Fe2O3 nanofluid droplets

Lei Shi,Cunwen Huang,Ruibin Ning,Xiongbo Duan,Tian Zhou,Zhiqiang Sun

The evaporation kinetics of magnetic nanofluid droplets under solar irradiation is important for their photothermal applications in energy and medicine areas. In this work, magnetic nanofluids were employed to study the evaporation kinetics including mass, temperature, and contact angle under solar irradiation. Compared with deionized water , the evaporation rate of magnetic nanofluid droplets was doubled and increased with the initial mass. At the beginning of evaporation, the evaporation rate reached the maximum value, and the stable evaporation stage was close to the end time. Moreover, the higher the light intensity was, the maximum evaporation rate appeared earlier and the stable evaporation time was shortened. At the same time, the higher the extreme value of the evaporation rate, the faster the rate of decline, and the shorter the evaporation time, when the light intensity was higher than 800 W/m 2 , the rate does not change significantly. This interfacial evaporation technology of magnetic nanofluid droplets offers great convenience to liquid and droplet handling and may be implemented in a multitude of domains such as bio-sensing, chemistry combination, and solar catalytic fuel production.

Full-spectrum-responsive Ti4O7-PVA nanocomposite hydrogel with ultrahigh evaporation rate for efficient solar steam generation

Xinye Xu,Qi Zhao,Qi Liu,Junxiao Qiu,Jinhao Li,Wenqian Zheng,Jie Cao,Lina Wang,Wen Wang,Shutong Yuan,Anni Fu,Hanjun Yang,Chuanyi Wang,Jingkun Xu,Baoyang Lu

Solar steam generation (SSG) via interfacial photothermal conversion has emerged in sustainable seawater desalination and sewage purification. One of the grand challenges is that low light absorption generally limits photothermal materials on water evaporation rates and insufficient on-board performance for real practice. Herein, we propose a “molecular/phase dual-locking” strategy to homogeneously composite Magnéli phases like Ti 4 O 7 nanoparticles and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by chemical-physical bi-crosslinking. As-obtained Ti 4 O 7 -PVA nanocomposite hydrogels (TPNHs) exhibit a narrow bandgap (~0.81 eV) for highly efficient sunlight absorption all through UV–vis–NIR full-spectrum wavelengths (up to ~99.56 %) and enable a record high evaporation rate of ∼4.45 kg m −2  h −1 with outstanding energy efficiency (~90.69 %) under one sun irradiation. A 20−day continuous test in real seawater manifests excellent long-term performance stability of TPNHs without salt accumulation. We further demonstrate the SSG efficacy of such hydrogels by applying them for efficient desalination/purification of varying seawater and sewage samples with low-to-high salinity, strong acids/bases, heavy metal ions, and organic dyes. This “molecular/phase dual-locking” design strategy and resultant Ti 4 O 7 -PVA nanocomposite hydrogels present a promising methodology to boost practical applications for seawater desalination and sewage purification.

Transferring heat downward from the evaporation interface to accelerate solar vapor generation

Jingrui Lan,Haoran Li,Xiaoyi Liu,Shiming Wang,Wenpeng Hong

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation (SIWE) is an important strategy for addressing the world's freshwater shortage. However, the traditional evaporator typically localizes the heat to the evaporation interface. This would increase the radiative heat loss between the evaporator and the environment, resulting in a reduction in the evaporation rate. Herein, a water-energy-balanced evaporator (WEBE) is proposed by accurately adjusting the thickness of the solar absorber. The excess energy is transferred downward to preheat the water, which will be transported to the evaporation interface, instead of being dissipated to the environment. In addition, a unique T-shaped water path is introduced to reduce the contact area between the evaporation interface and the bulk water. These allow the WEBE to decrease the conductive and radiative heat losses by 16.4% in total. Importantly, the WEBE demonstrates a superior evaporation rate due to efficient thermal management and water-energy balance. Under 1 sun (at a solar flux of q = 1 kW m −2 ) illumination, the evaporation rate reaches 2.02 kg m −2 h −1 , which is 1.21 times of the traditional evaporator. This work provides a novel and accessible approach to further increase direct solar vapor productivity for solar desalination.

Leaf-inspired solar evaporators with synergistic regulation of wettability and water supply angle for enhanced energy-mass management

Yue Liu,Chujia Xu,Xintao Xie,Tingkai Wang,Xianfeng Xie,Jianyong Ye,Jia Wang,Sheng Zhuo,Jiang Xu,Weifan Chen

Optimization of energy-mass transport in solar desalination devices is essential for controlling the yield of freshwater and energy consumption. However, complex application environments make it challenging to clarify the coordinated patterns of water transfer and heat utilization under the coexistence of multiple mechanisms. Here, a biomimetic solar desalination device with gradient wettability and variable water supply angles is introduced, drawing inspiration from the natural growth of tree branches and leaves. This design effectively leverages the distinct longitudinal water transport capabilities of Janus sponge leaves, which exhibit double-sided super hydrophilicity and single-sided weak or strong hydrophobicity, resulting in varied water accumulation volumes and locations. Simulation and the synchronous optimization of leaf inclination angles are employed to visualize the water-heat transfer and its distribution, revealing the equilibrium principle between water flow and heat consumption. Based on theoretical assessments, the ambient light intensity required for better performance release is configured for each leaf. This holistic and nuanced tuning results in an evaporation rate of 2.98 kg m −2 h −1 , showcasing stable tolerance to high-concentration brines and adaptability to outdoor conditions. This approach transcends the constraints of conventional single-variable regulation, presenting an innovative avenue for the design of energy-mass management systems in solar desalination technology.
