Background Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is one of the most powerful instrumental techniques for the determination of tungsten for its low detection limit and wide linear range, while it remains challenging since the analytical performance can be affected by complicated sample matrix. Chemical vapor generation (CVG) harbors the potential to be an alternative to conventional solution nebulization for sample introduction to reduce matrix effect. However, the CVG of tungsten was low in efficiency. It is clear that green and homogeneous enhancement for CVG of tungsten is desired and the mechanism is worth in-depth investigation. Results Two green and homogeneous enhancement systems for CVG of tungsten were studied, including photochemical vapor generation (PVG) and hydride generation (HG) with sensitizers, Fe 3+ and DDTC, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) were 0.02 μg L −1 for the PVG and 0.003 μg L −1 for the HG, respectively. For PVG, the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling, free radical species, gaseous product, and the chemical speciation evolution of W in the PVG process were studied in detail. Photo-Fenton effect, generated reductive radical ·CO 2 − , gaseous product Fe(CO) 5 , and the mixed valence of W 5+ /W 6+ in the PVG process were found to be crucial for the enhancement. As for HG, the complexation between W(VI) and DDTC might be conducive to the enhanced HG efficiency. Significance This work not only in-depth expands the element scope of CVG, but also investigates the enhancement mechanisms experimentally, which might render a deep insight into the CVG processes and foreshadow new guidelines for screening green and efficient homogeneous sensitizers for CVGs of more elements in the future.

Background The evaluation of particle-bound mercury (PBM) exposure is a crucial aspect of assessing the global cycle of mercury (Hg) and its adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. Nevertheless, the precise and reliable measurement of PBM remains a formidable task because of the costly and cumbersome equipment required, as well as the inadequate sensitivities exhibited by current analytical techniques. In this study, we provided a unique and straightforward approach utilising filter fiber-assisted matrix solid-phase dispersion (FF-MSPD) in conjunction with single-drop solution electrode discharge-induced cold vapor generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (SD-SEGD-CVG-AFS) for the precise quantification of PBM. The PBM contained in a small filter was efficiently extracted with 200 μL of eluent (0.2 % L-cysteine and 4 % HCOOH) by FF-MSPD and subsequently converted to Hg 0 using SD-SEGD-CVG, before being subjected to examination using AFS. Results The resulted limit of detection (LOD, 3 σ ) was 0.17 pg m −3 , obtained with a sample volume of 12 m 3 , which was much higher than that of the techniques published in the literatures. The aforementioned technique was effectively utilised for the detection of mercury in 19 samples of PM 2.5 and PM 10 which were collected over a span of several months. Signiffcance Contrast to conventional methods, the proposed method offers a range of distinct advantages, including simplified operation, absence of memory effects , enhanced sensitivity, substantial reduction in reagent usage, and decreased secondary pollution. These advantages are particularly valuable for advancing research on the fate, transport, and exposure routes of environmental mercury.

With increasing use of bismuth in industry, a better understanding of its environmental behaviour is required, including an improved knowledge of its background concentration range in (non-saline) freshwaters. However, the poor analytical sensitivity of previous methods may lead to inaccurate measurement results for Bi 3+ in environmental samples. In this work, cobalt ion-assisted photochemical vapour generation (PVG) was developed for the detection of trace Bi with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurement. The volatile species of Bi was found to be (CH 3 ) 3 Bi generated under UV irradiation in the presence of formic acid, acetic acid and Co 2+ . The major parameters potentially influencing the detection of Bi were investigated. Under optimised conditions, the limit of detection (3 s , n = 11) of the proposed method was 0.3 ng l −1 . The analytical sensitivity was enhanced about 70-fold for Bi 3+ compared with that using classic pneumatic nebulisation of ICP-MS. Furthermore, the proposed method showed better analytical sensitivity and anti-interference ability towards co-existing ions compared with ferric ion-assisted PVG systems. The accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated by analysis of environmental water samples and certified reference materials with satisfactory results.

A miniaturized UV-LED photochemical reactor is proposed for selenium photochemical vapor generation (Photo-CVG). The miniaturized Photo-CVG reactor with a coin size mainly consists of an ultraviolet light-emitting-diode (UV-LED) and a quartz coil with nano-TiO2 coating on its inner wall. It was coupled with an atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS) as a sample introduction device for trace selenium determination. The nano-TiO2 coating process, UV-LED wavelength and correlative experimental parameters as well as potential interference were investigated in detail. Under optimized experimental conditions, limits of detection of 0.21 and 0.28 μg L−1 for Se(VI) and Se(IV) were obtained, respectively, with a relative standard deviation (n = 3) of 2.5% and 1.0% at 20 μg L−1. The potential application of this UV-LED Photo-CVG AFS was demonstrated by successfully analyzing a certified reference water sample and several mineral water samples.

A simple and miniature analytical system was developed to determine Hg and Cd in small amounts of samples by integrating flow injection capillary liquid electrode discharge (CLED) optical emission spectrometry (OES) and microplasma-induced vapor generation (PIVG) atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). With the assistance of the inherent capillary driving force and the force arising from the solution vaporization in the microplasma, the sample solution was automatically transported into the discharge chamber wherein analytes were simultaneously excited to generate their atomic emission lines and converted to their volatile species. Subsequently, the volatile species were further swept into AFS for their further determination. Therefore, the same sample could be successively analyzed by OES and AFS. Owing to the unique independent linear-range and sensitivity of CLED-OES and PIVG-AFS, the developed system not only significantly extended its linear range to 6 orders of magnitude but also remarkably reduced the sample consumption to several microliters. Thus, wide linear-range and ultrasensitive determination of Hg and Cd in limited amounts of samples were accomplished simply by sharing one single capillary liquid electrode discharge source. Under the optimized conditions, limits of detection (LODs) of 10 μg L–1 were obtained for both Hg and Cd when CLED-OES was used as a detector, whereas the LODs for Hg and Cd were improved to 0.03 μg L–1 and 0.04 μg L–1 with AFS detector, respectively. In addition, the extremely wide linear-range of 0.001–100 mg L–1 and 0.001–40 mg L–1 were obtained for Hg and Cd, respectively. The potential application of this method was validated by successfully analyzing three Certified Reference Materials (ZK021-1, GBW(E)090033, and GBW(E)090034) and six human blood samples.

Photochemical vapor generation (PCVG) is an effective alternative to traditional chemical vapor generation (CVG), offering superior sample introduction and matrix separation. The mechanism of PCVG involves radical reactions initiated by photolysis of the medium, which play a crucial role in the reduction and vaporization of analytes in solution. While electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is widely used for free radical analysis, traditional EPR methods lack in situ and real-time monitoring and may introduce instability. In this work, a comprehensive online/in situ EPR detection strategy was developed to monitor the dynamic change of free radicals during PCVG in a formic acid system. Both methods monitored the concentrations of •CO2–, •OH, •H, and •CHO radicals under light exposure. The online EPR method allows for quantification of free radicals in formic acid systems and those with common transition-metal ions. Additionally, in situ EPR tracking revealed the generation and transformation of free radicals. Decay analysis of radical adducts confirmed that the observed EPR signals result from competing processes of radical formation, interconversion, and DMPO-trap addition, indicating a dynamic equilibrium among these pathways. For the first time, the interconversion of •OH and •H radicals into •CO2– during the PCVG process was observed, shedding light on the reduction mechanism of analytes. Additionally, this finding also suggests that the reductive role of a substantial amount of •CHO in the formic-acid-based PCVG system may have been previously underestimated. Overall, this work introduces an innovative method for real-time monitoring and could provide new insight for mechanistic studies of PCVG systems.

A novel photochemical vapor generation (PVG)-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) method was proposed for the sensitive determination of trace cobalt. A synergistic enhancement effect of Fe(II) and Cu(II) ions on the PVG of cobalt was discovered in this work. The critical factors influencing the PVG process, including the reaction medium, the UV irradiation time, and the flow rate of carrier gas were investigated in detail; and the interference of the coexisting ions was also studied. The analytical sensitivity of this method increased by about 16-fold in comparison with that of the PVG without sensitizers, and the limit of detection (LOD) for cobalt was found to be 2 ng L −1 . The possible photocatalytic mechanism of the photochemical reaction was initially explored through experimental studies. The method was successfully applied to the direct analysis of seven real water samples for trace cobalt, showing analytical results consistent with those by pneumatic nebulization (PN)-ICP-MS and achieving spike recoveries of 97–113 %. The findings of this study would extend the application scope of PVG technique.
