Fabrication of rGO/Fe3O4 Magnetic Composite for the Adsorption of Anthraquinone-2-Sulfonate in Water Phase

Shuangyang Zhao,Meixi Li,Jie Ding,Shanshan Yang,Yani Zang,Yan Zhao,Xinlei Gao,Nanqi Ren

In the last few decades, anthraquinone and its derivatives (AQs) have been intensively applied to electrochemical, textile and dye, and photovoltaic industries. This has increased the levels of AQs in the natural environment and threatens human health. To remove AQs from the aqueous phase and recover these multi-functional molecules, a binary magnetic adsorbent, reduced graphene/Fe3O4(rGO/Fe3O4), was synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were then used to characterize the samples. The adsorption capacities of rGO/Fe3O4to AQs were investigated by selecting anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQ2S) as a model molecule. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the second-order kinetics. The regeneration of adsorbents and the recycling of AQ2S and solvent were simultaneously achieved by Soxhlet extraction and rotary evaporation. These results confirm the high adsorption efficiency of rGO/Fe3O4for removing AQs from water and provide a promising approach to recover the valuable molecules from the aqueous phase. Keywords:adsorption;magnetic composite;anthraquinone-2-sulfonate;regeneration

A novel strategy for enhancing electron transfer by adding BC/AQS in the anaerobic digestion of agriculture waste: Focusing on the interaction between quinone/C=O and microbes

Yulei Zhang,Zonglu Yao,Junyi Ma,Jiadong Yu,Ping Ai,Ruixia Shen,Yi Liang,Lixin Zhao

Low interspecies electron transfer efficiency among microorganisms is a critical factor limiting anaerobic digestion performance. In this study, conductive and stable biochar (BC) was combined with redox-active anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) to enhance electron transfer efficiency through their synergistic effects, thereby improving the efficiency of anaerobic digestion. Results showed that cumulative methane production (CMP) reached 176.34 mL/g VS under optimal conditions, including an AQS impregnation concentration of 1 mmol/L, a BC/AQS addition of 5 %, and a total solid (TS) content of 10 %. The addition of BC/AQS enriched Proteiniphilum and Methanobacterium , which shifted the methanogenic pathway from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic, significantly improving volatile fatty acid conversion and total organic carbon degradation. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and changes in key enzyme-encoding genes indicated that BC/AQS enhances the synergistic interaction between Proteiniphilum and Methanobacterium through the redox activity of quinone/C=O functional groups, which may play a key role in the formation of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). This study provides a promising strategy to enhance microbial electron transfer mechanisms in anaerobic digestion by leveraging the complementary properties of meso-materials, offering new insights into the utilization of agricultural waste for energy production.

Anthraquinone-2-Sulfonate as a Microbial Photosensitizer and Capacitor Drives Solar-to-N2O Production with a Quantum Efficiency of Almost Unity

Man Chen,Quanhua Cai,Xiangyu Chen,Shaofu Huang,Qinyuan Feng,Tetsuro Majima,Raymond Jianxiong Zeng,Shungui Zhou

Semiartificial photosynthesis shows great potential in solar energy conversion and environmental application. However, the rate-limiting step of photoelectron transfer at the biomaterial interface results in an unsatisfactory quantum yield (QY, typically lower than 3%). Here, an anthraquinone molecule, which has dual roles of microbial photosensitizer and capacitor, was demonstrated to negotiate the interface photoelectron transfer via decoupling the photochemical reaction with a microbial dark reaction. In a model system, anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS)-photosensitized Thiobacillus denitrificans, a maximum QY of solar-to-nitrous oxide (N2O) of 96.2% was achieved, which is the highest among the semiartificial photosynthesis systems. Moreover, the conversion of nitrate into N2O was almost 100%, indicating the excellent selectivity in nitrate reduction. The capacitive property of AQS resulted in 82–89% of photoelectrons released at dark and enhanced 5.6–9.4 times the conversion of solar-to-N2O. Kinetics investigation revealed a zero-order- and first-order- reaction kinetics of N2O production in the dark (reductive AQS-mediated electron transfer) and under light (direct photoelectron transfer), respectively. This work is the first study to demonstrate the role of AQS in photosensitizing a microorganism and provides a simple and highly selective approach to produce N2O from nitrate-polluted wastewater and a strategy for the efficient conversion of solar-to-chemical by a semiartificial photosynthesis system.

A High-Performance Redox Electrochemical Capacitor: Confinement of Sodium Anthraquinone-2-Sulfonate in Porous Carbons with Electric-Field Assistance

Yannan Ma,Yong Chen,Chengwen Xin,Yanqiong Cheng,Qianqi Li,Hui Xu

Redox electrolytes bridge the energy density gap between carbon-based supercapacitors and batteries. However, across-diffusion of soluble redox couples results in subpar rate performance, therefore, how to deal with this impasse becomes the focus of the field’s attention. In this study, we put forth the idea that the problem can be solved by using activated carbon nanopores as reservoirs to retain redox species and prevent their diffusion. The electric field is used to help confine sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS, size is around 1.634 × 0.634 × 0.864 nm3) to the nanopores of the tea-leaf biomass carbon electrode (TAC, 59.65% of micropores). We show that AQS molecules occupy small micropores (less than 1 nm), resolving the problem of cross-diffusion that arises naturally in redox-enhanced electrochemical capacitors. Thus, in the 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte, a high specific capacitance of 733.3 F g–1 is produced in a three-electrode system at a current density of 1 A g–1, and only 7% of the specific capacitance decays at a current density of 10 A g–1. Besides, the TAC/AQS-5 electrode-based symmetric device delivers a maximum energy density of 41.48 Wh kg–1 and excellent capacitance retention of 86.2% after 5000 charge and discharge cycles at 2 A g–1. The maximum energy density obtained by our symmetrical supercapacitor is higher than that of currently reported aqueous electrolyte supercapacitors.

Enhancing sulfur cathode process via a functionalized complex molecule

Zheng Qingyi,Fan Xiaoxiang,Liu Guoqing,Hou Qing,Fan Jingmin,Zheng Mingsen,Dong Quanfeng

Lithium-sulfur batteries are regarded as promising next-generation energy storage batteries for their ultra-high theoretical energy density. However, the complex sulfur electrode process with sluggish sulfur conversion reactions is a critical issue for lithium-sulfur batteries, in which catalytic interfacial reactions and accelerated lithium-ion diffusion are the key factors. Our previous work has shown that implanting functional molecules with multiple redox properties in the electrode can break through the conventional diffusion layer constraints and achieve forced convection. In this work, a functionalized complex molecule, methylene blue anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (MB-AQ), with multiple redox activities as well as abundant active sites, was synthesized and introduced into the sulfur cathode. In addition to accelerating the transport of lithium ions by reversible inhaling and exhaling lithium ions, the MB-AQ can combine polysulfides by its active sites to accelerate sulfur conversion reactions. Benefiting from two functions of accelerating ion diffusion and catalyzing interfacial reactions, MB-AQ/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/S cathode can achieve high initial capacities of 884 and 674 mAh·g −1 with stable cycling of 700 and 1,000 times at 1 and 4 C, respectively. It is worth mentioning that the capacity of 462 mAh·g -1 can be achieved even at a high current density of 6 C. This work provides a new approach to enhancing the sulfur cathode process.

Efficient Biodegradation of Azo Dyes Catalyzed by the Anthraquinone-2-sulfonate and Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite

Yu-hang Song,Qing-tao Xu,Tao He,Zi-yang Wang,Lei Yu

An anthraquinone-2-sulfonate and reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (AQS@rGO) was prepared and the improvement on the biotic reduction of a pollutant, i.e., azo dye, was demonstrated. Electron paramagnetic resonance signal of the semi-quinone radical in the well-dispersed solid AQS@rGO solution was detected. Although the as-prepared AQS@rGO has a negligible adsorption capacity toward methyl orange (MO) dye, the decolorization efficiencies in both flask experiments and sequencing operation reactors in the presence of AQS@rGO were increased by more than 1.5 times as compared to that with graphene oxide, and an efficient and continuable catalytic effect on the decolorization of azo dyes in seven operation periods was maintained. The catalytic effect on reduction was caused by the formation of a space-charge layer, which facilitates the efficient e– transfer from the conductive rGO sheets to the C═O of the AQS molecule. The results suggested that the AQS@rGO may act as an efficient insoluble redox mediator, which is important for the pollution control by accelerating the extracellular electron transfer.

Immobilized redox mediators on modified biochar and their role on azo dye biotransformation in anaerobic biological systems: Mechanisms, biodegradation pathway and theoretical calculation

Guang-Yuan Wang,Shan-Shan Yang,Jie Ding,Cheng-Xin Chen,Le Zhong,Lan Ding,Ming Ma,Guo-Sheng Sun,Zong-Liang Huang,Nan-Qi Ren

In this study, a novel solid-phase redox mediator (RM) was manufactured via immobilizing anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) onto modified biochar (BC). The RM was used to enhance the anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) driven anaerobic biodegradation of azo dyes. Prepared at the optimal pyrolysis temperature of 550 ℃, the AQS modified BC550 exhibits a higher adsorption capacity of about 12.81% toward AQS compared to that of commercial granular activated carbon (GAC). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses showed that BC550-AQS contained more redox moieties (quinone and C = O) than GAC-AQS, indicating that the BC550 is suitable as a carrier of immobilized AQS. During the 36-h reaction, incubation of BC550-AQS as the solid-phase RM obviously enhanced the capacity of AGS (BC550-AQS + AGS), evidenced by the maximum percentage of Reactive Red 2 (RR2) decolorization (92.27%), which increased up by 80.55% and 14.48% compared to the controls (BC550-AQS, 17.95%) and (GAC-AQS + AGS, 78.61%). Besides, BC550-AQS exhibits good reusability and a higher RR2 decolorization rate (per AQS dosage) over 15 consecutive cycles. The mechanism of biodegradation pathway of RR2 initiated by BC550-AQS was studied using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and chemical computation. Density-functional theory calculations successfully predict that the RR2 biodegradation pathway mainly includes azo bond cleavage and electron attraction with a stronger electron affinity. This work not only proposes a deep insight into the biodegradation pathway of RR2 by employing BC550-AQS in an anaerobic biological system but also develops effective solid-phase RMs for efficient removal of contaminants from wastewaters by biological treatment.

The humic substance analogue antraquinone-2, 6-disulfonate (AQDS) enhanced zero-valent iron based autotrophic denitrification: Performances and mechanisms

Jiaohui Xia,Yan Li,Xinbai Jiang,Dan Chen,Jinyou Shen

Zero-valent iron based autotrophic denitrification (ZVI-AD) has attracted increasing attentions in nitrate removal due to saving organic carbon budget in wastewater treatment , but limited by the low reaction speed, poor electron transfer efficiency as well as the compaction/blocking by iron hydrolysis products. Humic substances (HS) were promising to regulate iron cycle and accelerate electron transfer by serving as electron mediators. In this study, HS analogue, antraquinone-2, 6-disulfonate (AQDS), was added to enhance ZVI-AD process. Results showed that the dosage of AQDS led to a NO 3 − -N removal efficiency of 83.37 ± 3.98% within 96 h, which was 32.28 ± 1.25% higher than that in ZVI-AD system. The corrosion of ZVI and microbially nitrate reduction were both improved at the presence of AQDS. The addition of AQDS enriched the functional species, including autotrophic denitrobacteria namely Thauera and Hydrogenophaga , iron redox-related species namely Ferruginibacter and HS respiration related species namely Flavobacterium . The genes napA and napB related to electron transfer, nirK and nosZ related to the accumulation of intermediate products were also enriched by the addition of AQDS. AQDS addition boosted the electrons flowing to both abiotic and biotic nitrate reduction. Nitrate removal mechanism involved in ZVI-AQDS coupled system was proposed. This study provided an alternative strategy for improving ZVI-AD by HS.

Lin Yan,Ren Yu,Lin Xiaoyun

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) loaded with sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) was prepared using one-pot hydrothermal synthesis. The phase, composition and structure of the prepared materials were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The AQS, RGO and AQS/RGO on functionalized carbon cloth (FCC) electrodes were established. The performance of AQS/FCC, RGO/FCC and AQS/RGO/FCC were tested by galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The specific capacitance ( C s ) of AQS/FCC, RGO/FCC and AQS/RGO/FCC is 9.29, 194.8 and 402.5 F g −1 at the current density ( C d ) of 0.5 A g −1 , respectively. After 1000 cycles of charging and discharging, the capacity retention of AQS/RGO/FCC remained at 92.6%. Therefore, the AQS/RGO/FCC electrode exhibits excellent rate performance, excellent charging and discharging performance and cycling stability in supercapacitors (SCs).

Dual-redox enhanced supercapacitors with sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate and potassium bromide

Xiaofei Miao,Xiangxin Zhang,Sujing Chen,Yongchuan Liu,Yuanqiang Chen,Junhong Lin,Qi Chen,Yining Zhang

For improving the energy density of carbon-based supercapacitors, the highly reversible redox mediators with giant pseudocapacitance have been studied extensively. In this work, the dual-redox combination of sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) and potassium bromide (KBr) is introduced into the carbon-based supercapacitors to enhance the electrochemical performances. In the dual-redox enhanced supercapacitors (DRESc), the performances of negative and positive electrodes are improved by AQS and KBr, respectively. In order to use AQS and KBr rationally and effectively, two different approaches are studied: (I) redox mediators are adsorbed in the electrodes; (II) redox mediators are added into the electrolyte. The experimental results demonstrate that the combination of adsorbing AQS onto the negative electrode (the approach I) and adding KBr in the electrolyte (the approach II) is the best approach. Furthermore, electrochemical results prove that it is an optimal choice to adsorb 3 mg AQS for the negative electrode in this work. Meanwhile, to match the AQS-enhanced negative electrode, synchronous potential measurements indicate that the optimal choice for the positive electrode is adding 1.5 M KBr in the 1 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Finally, the DRESc achieved a maximum gravimetric energy density (E G ) of 32.05 Wh kg −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and a maximum gravimetric power density (P G ) of 2200 W kg −1 at 8 A g −1 , implying that the AQS-Br dual-redox system is a promising candidate for energy storage and conversion.

Enhanced reactivity and electron efficiency of nanoscale zero-valent iron for nitroaromatic compounds reduction through modification with anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid

Yuxin Li,Shiqi Yang,Zihan Liu,Yiyang Pan,Pengfei Zhang,Zhiqiu Qu,Chao Shan

Humic substances (HS) modification favors the reactivity of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for water decontamination from nitro-compounds like nitrobenzene (NB), whereas the structural complexity of HS hinders the elucidation of its mechanism. Herein, anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid (AQC) was employed as a typical model molecule for HS. Through AQC modification, the water contact angle of nZVI evidently increased from 6° to 19°-46°, and the rate constant and electron efficiency for NB reduction under aerobic condition was substantially elevated by 6-10.3 times and 2.5-2.8 times, respectively. Among the AQC-modified nZVI materials with varied molar ratios of AQC/Fe (0.1-3%), 1% AQC-nZVI not only exhibited the optimal reactivity and electron efficiency, but also demonstrated enhanced reactivity for various nitroaromatic compounds. Moreover, AQC modification could advance the complete reduction of NB by nZVI to aniline and minimize the accumulation of intermediates. In addition, AQC-nZVI materials could maintain an excellent reduction efficiency over a wide pH range (4-9). Mechanistically, the increase of surface hydrophobicity of nZVI owing to AQC modification promoted the adsorption affinity for NB and redirected more electron transfer to NB. Leveraging both anthraquinone and carboxylic groups, AQC served as electron shuttle to mediate the electron transfer from nZVI to NB whilst accelerating the Fe(II)/Fe(III) circulation. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed a pronounced decrease in the charge transfer resistance of nZVI from 381.4 Ω to 252.8-337.4 Ω due to AQC modification, thereby facilitating the interfacial electron transfer. This study offers insights into the HS-enhanced reactivity and selectivity of nZVI for water decontamination from nitroaromatic compounds.
