In this study, for the first time, we applied ammonium phosphate to pre-treat chrysocolla prior to sulfidization flotation. In addition, we investigated the structural characteristics of the copper sulfide film formed on the chrysocolla surfaces and its response to flotation. Micro-flotation experiments revealed that the addition of (NH 4 ) 3 PO 4 prior to sulfidization greatly improves the floatability of chrysocolla and its recovery increased from 8.71% to 87.97% with butyl xanthate as the collector. The results of the field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that numerous regular fragments appeared on the chrysocolla surfaces after the addition of (NH 4 ) 3 PO 4 . The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry analysis confirmed that these fragments were newly formed copper sulfide covering the chrysocolla surfaces, during this process a chemical reaction occurred in the slurry system, i.e. the Cu 2+ were reduced to Cu + , the S 2− were mainly oxidized to S − , (S 2 ) − , (S 2 ) 2− . The copper sulfide species primarily in the form of crystalline covellite (Cu + 3 (S 2 ) 2− S − ), which is the key to obtaining good flotation recovery. As a specific activator, (NH 4 ) 3 PO 4 participates in the liquid-solid phase chemical reaction between the sulfidizing reagent and the chrysocolla, which promotes the sulfidization reaction of chrysocolla.

In this work, the growth of copper sulfide crystal onto azurite surfaces during sulfurization and its response to flotation are investigated. Filed emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed that the sulfurization of azurite is not limited to the mineral surface, but rather penetrates into the bulk to form covellite crystal (syn-CuS), creating favorable conditions for the stable adsorption of xanthate and greatly promoting the azurite flotation. Additionally, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) analyses, a redox reaction occurred during this process, and Cu(Ⅱ) onto the mineral surface was reduced to Cu(I). Correspondingly, reduced S 2- was oxidized to (S 2 ) 2- , (S n ) 2- , and even to deeper oxidation state S 0 , (S x O y ) n- and SO 4 2- . Excess sodium sulfide strengthens copper sulfide to form onto the azurite surface, and provides enough raw material for crystal copper sulfide to grow, resulting in the formation of “flake-like” covellite with a better crystallinity. However, the floatability of azurite decreased dramatically under this condition, because the generated massive colloidal copper sulfide in flotation pulp deteriorates the flotation environment, resulting in a decreased effective adsorption of collector onto azurite surfaces.

The sulfidization-xanthate flotation process has been used commercially with some success in recovering azurite, but it remains unsatisfactory in terms of the environmental impact and flotation index. To remediate these deficiencies, this study evaluated the flotation performance of sodium trithiocarbonate (Na2CS3) as a green sulfidizing agent for azurite. Flotation test results demonstrated that Na2CS3 has the same efficacy as sodium sulfide but markedly superior activation performance. At one-fifth the dose, the maximum flotation recovery for Na2CS3 is about 20 percentage points higher than that observed for sodium sulfide. Contact angle measurements and field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that Na2CS3 modifies the pristine azurite surface by forming a relatively uniform sulfur-rich layer composed of nanoparticles, which in turn increases the collector efficacy and thus improves flotation recovery. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry further suggest that this sulfur-rich hydrophobic layer could be cuprous trithiocarbonate. The reduction of Cu(II) in the azurite lattice is considered a key step in forming the sulfur-rich layer, and the resultant Cu(I) interacts with Na2CS3 through the latter’s carbon–sulfur bonds. The results of this study will facilitate the development of better technologies to process copper oxide ores.

Combined collectors are widely used in mineral flotation. However, in the field of copper oxide mineral flotation, theoretical research on combined collectors is relatively scarce, especially the combination of chelating agents and xanthates. Herein, this study systematically investigated the flotation performance and related potential adsorption chemical essence of sodium butyl xanthate (SBX), 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), and their combined collectors on sulfidized azurite. Micro-flotation results demonstrated that the low-dosage combination collector system of SBX/MBT can effectively improve the flotation recovery of sulfidized azurite. Surface tension results indicated that the combined collectors had higher surface activity than the single collector, thus exhibiting better foam stability. LEIS, SEM-EDS and contact angles analysis demonstrated that compared with single collector, the combined collectors could adsorb more uniformly on the surface of sulfidized azurite, effectively improving its hydrophobicity. ToF-SIMS and XPS further demonstrated that MBT adsorbed on azurite by bonding its S and N atoms with Cu atoms of sulfidized azurite to form the surface MBT-Cu complexes. Combined with the results of adsorption capacity tests, further analysis indicated that the combined collectors of SBX and MBT may have achieved co-adsorption by forming a mixed-ligand complex on the surface of sulfidized azurite, which enhanced the adsorption density and stability of the collector on the surface of sulfidized azurite.
