Western flower thrips (WFTs), Frankliniella occidentalis Pergrande, and onion thrips (OTs), Thrips tabaci Lindeman, are two cosmopolitan insect pests of agricultural and horticultural plants. Understanding the occurrence and development of thrips on plants is crucial for identifying suitable plants that can be used for developing a “push-pull” strategy against thrips. In this study, the dynamics of WFTs and OTs on plants ( Allium fistulosum L., Medicago sativa L., Luffa cylindrica (L.) Roem., Ocimum basilicum L., and Schizonepeta tenuifolia (Benth.) Briq.) were investigated for two consecutive years (2018–2019). Throughout the survey, the abundances of both thrips species were strongly associated with plant species and plant phenology; both thrips species were present at relatively high densities on M. sativa but very low densities on O. basilicum and S. tenuifolia . Populations of both thrips species greatly increased during plant flowering. A Y-tube olfactory test was used to study the effects of plant volatiles in mediating thrips behaviour and showed that volatiles of M. sativa were attractive to both thrips species whether emitted by the plant in the vegetative or flowering stage, while volatiles of O. basilicum and S. tenuifolia were repellent to thrips. Additionally, because of the presence of a high number of floral chemicals, both thrips species exhibited a greater preference for volatiles emitted by plants in the flowering period over those emitted by plants in the vegetative period. Our observations indicate that plant species and flowering status play an important role in the abundance dynamics of thrips and that the volatiles of flowering plants attract thrips more strongly than volatiles emitted by vegetative plants. These findings can facilitate the screening of attractive/unattractive plants for developing push-pull strategies to control thrips.

To meet the demand for novel pest management strategies to combat the development of insecticide resistance, plant essential oils may be a promising alternative source. This study investigated the insecticidal activity of five essential oils from the Rutaceae plant family againstThrips flavusSchrank (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) under laboratory conditions. The plant essential oils were citrus oil (Citrus reticulataBlanco), Chuan-shan pepper oil (Zanthoxylum piasezkiiMaxim.), zanthoxylum oil (Zanthoxylum bungeanumMaxim.), pomelo peel oil (Citrus maxima(Burm.) Merr.) and orange leaf oil (Citrus sinensis(L.) Osbeck). Among the essential oils evaluated, orange leaf oil (LC50= 0.26 g/L), zanthoxylum oil (LC50= 0.27 g/L), and pomelo peel oil (LC50= 0.44 g/L) resulted in a higher gastric toxicity under laboratory conditions. The results of the pot experiment also showed that orange leaf oil (93.06 ± 3.67% at 540.00 g a.i.·hm−2, 97.22 ± 1.39% at 720 g a.i.·hm−2, 100.00% at 900.00 g a.i.·hm−2) zanthoxylum oil (98.73 ± 1.27% at 900 g a.i.·hm−2), and pomelo peel oil (100.00% at 900 g a.i.·hm−2) exhibited a higher control efficacy, being the most effective againstT. flavusafter 7 days of treatment. The essential oil components were then identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The insecticidal activity of orange leaf oil, pomelo peel oil, and zanthoxylum oil could be attributed to their main constituents, such as methyl jasmonate (50.92%), D-limonene (76.96%), and linalool (52.32%), respectively. In the olfactory test, adultT. flavuswere attracted by zanthoxylum oil and Chuan-shan pepper oil. We speculated that linalool might be the key signaling compound that attractsT. flavus. These results showed that orange leaf oil, zanthoxylum oil, and pomelo peel oil exhibited insecticidal activities under controlled conditions. They can be implemented as effective and low-toxicity botanical insecticides and synergistic agents againstT. flavus. Keywords:essential oil;Thrips flavus;insecticidal activity;gastric toxicity;thrips

Thrips [ Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall)] (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a pest that poses a serious challenge to global crop production and food supply, especially to the cowpea industry. Nano-delivery systems have broad application prospects in the prevention and control of pests in agriculture. Herein, three types of amino acid (AA) modified polysuccinimide nano-delivery carriers (PSI-GABA, PSI-ASP and PSI-GLU) were constructed with a diameter of approximately 150 nm to load thiamethoxam (THX), which enhanced THX effective distribution and use with cowpea plants. Significantly, the PSI-GLU nanocarrier effectively delivered THX to cowpea plant tissues following 6 h of soil application. Compared with commercial THX suspension (SC), the THX content in the leaves of cowpea plants was increased by 2.3 times. Confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed that the FITC-labeled PSI-GLU nanocarrier reached the leaves through the vascular system after being absorbed by the roots of cowpea plants. The PSI-GLU nanocarrier decreased the LC 50 of THX from 11.45 to 7.79 mg/L and significantly enhanced the insecticidal effect. The PSI-GLU nanocarrier also improved the safety of THX to worker bees at 48 h, and moreover showed a growth-promoting effect on cowpea seedlings. These results demonstrated that the PSI-GLU nano-delivery carrier has promising uses on improving the effective utilization of THX for the sustainable control of thrips and reducing the risk to non-target pollutions.

BACKGROUND Thrips Anaphothrips obscurus are one of the cosmopolitan major pests feeding on cereals and other grasses. In order to develop alternatives of chemical insecticides for thrips control, based on fumigant activity screening and evaluation of 22 essential oil (EO) compounds against the thrips, the binary interactions of methyl salicylate and carvacrol (MS-C) with high fumigant toxicity were studied systematically by bioassay and field trials. RESULTS The bioassay results showed that six in 22 EO compounds had high fumigant toxicity against both the second-instar nymphs and adults of A. obscurus , including methyl salicylate, carvacrol, thymol, trans -cinnamaldehyde, diallyl trisulfide, and L-perillaldehyde. Furthermore, the combination of methyl salicylate mixed with carvacrol at a volume ratio of 5:5 exhibited the most significant synergism against A. obscurus , with a poison ratio value of 1.32 and a co-toxicity coefficient of 151.15. The optimal formulation of microemulsion (ME) was composed of 5% methyl salicylate, 5% carvacrol, 46% adjuvant and 44% deionized water. The result of dynamic light scattering and stability showed that MS-C 10% ME was a transparent, single-phase and homogeneous liquid system. Field trials indicated that the ME displayed a significant control efficacy of about 89.17% on thrips in peppers, and 82.59% in broad bean on the seventh day post application with a dosage of 600.0 g A.I hm –2 , respectively. CONCLUSION The binary combination of MS-C possesses strikingly synergistic action against thrips A. obscurus , and the MS-C 10% ME has the potential to be developed as a botanical pesticide product for thrips control. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Insect attacks change the quantity of volatiles emitted from plants, but little is known about the effects on the volatiles' stereochemical configurations. 1-Phenylethanol (1PE) is a major internal volatile of tea (Camellia sinensis) flowers. In the present study, insect-damaged C. sinensis flowers in the field emitted a different (R)-/(S)-1PE pattern than that emitted from undamaged flowers. Laboratory experiments showed that changes in the (R)-/(S)-1PE ratio were caused by treatments with Thrips hawaiiensis (Morgan), a pest of cut flowers and vegetable crops. These treatments led to an increase in jasmonic acid (JA) through the activation of allene oxide synthase, which is involved in JA biosynthesis. Exposing flowers to exogenous JA induced an (R)-/(S)-1PE emission pattern that was similar to that induced by a T. hawaiiensis attack, suggesting that JA was involved in the changes in the stereochemical configuration of 1PE emitted from the flowers after insect treatments. This study provides new insights into the involvement of volatiles in interactions between plants and insects, showing that not only the quantity but also the stereochemical configuration of plant volatiles is affected by insects.

BackgroundEssential oils (EOs) are recognized for their potent insecticidal activity and are widely considered promising agents for pest control.MethodsThe insecticidal activity of seven commercial citrus EOs against the global phytophagous pest Thrips flavus was evaluated using bioassays conducted under laboratory conditions. Moreover, the chemical composition of these EOs was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).ResultsAmong the 45 identified compounds, the major constituents were d-limonene (23.77%–95.10%), methyl jasmonate (38.76%), and linalyl acetate (34.55%). Orange flower oil, sweet orange oil, tangerine peel oil, bergamot oil, lime oil, lemon oil, and grapefruit oil exhibited good insecticidal activity against T. flavus without demonstrating significant repellent activity. Orange flower oil and sweet orange oil showed higher insecticidal toxicity, with LC50 values of 0.20 g/L and 0.37 g/L, respectively. In pot experiments, the higher control efficacy against T. flavus was found after 7 days of treatment for orange flower oil (91.14±1.27% at 720.00 g a.i.·hm−2 and 100% at 900.00 g a.i.·hm−2), sweet orange oil (91.14±5.52% at 900.00 g a.i.·hm−2), tangerine peel oil (96.20±2.19% at 720 g a.i.·hm−2 and 100% at 900.00 g a.i.·hm−2), lemon oil (96.20±2.19% at 900 g a.i.·hm−2), and lime oil (97.47±2.53% at 900.00 g a.i.·hm−2).ConclusionTaken together, orange flower oil and tangerine peel oil, which were found to contain d-limonene and methyl jasmonate, demonstrated rapid and more effective insecticidal activity compared to the other EOs tested, which makes these two EOs promising alternatives to chemical insecticides.

The cowpea thrips Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) exhibited unexpected aggregation on flowers of the non-host Baccaurea ramiflora Lour. (Malpighiales: Phyllanthaceae), suggesting floral volatile-mediated attraction. We systematically investigated this phenomenon through: (i) GC-MS identification of B. ramiflora floral volatiles; (ii) electroantennographic (EAG) and olfactory assays; and (iii) field trapping experiments. Both the flowers of B. ramiflora and their headspace extracts exhibited significant attractive effects on M. usitatus. Five key volatile organic compounds were consistently detected: linalool, 2,4-decadienal, trans-2-decenal, (Z)-β-ocimene, and trans-2-undecenal. The antennae of M. usitatus demonstrate distinct sensitivities to different volatiles, with the appearance of their EAG response peaks being affected by the dosage levels at which these volatiles are applied. The olfactory responses revealed that linalool (100 to 10000 μg), 2,4-decadienal (10 to 10000 μg), and trans-2-undecenal (1000 to 10000 μg) attracted M. usitatus. Trans-2-decenal attracted M. usitatus at 1000 μg but repelled at 10000 μg. (Z)-β-ocimene repelled M. usitatus at doses ranging from 10 to 10000 μg. Field trials confirmed 2,4-decadienal (10 to 100 μg) as the most effective attractant. These findings support the development of a 2,4-decadienal-based semiochemical strategy for sustainable M. usitatus management in cowpea production systems.

Plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important link that mediates chemical communication between plants and plants, plants and insects, and plants and natural enemies of insect pests. In this study, we tested the response in the selective behavior of western flower thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis, to the VOCs of kidney bean,Phaseolus vulgarisL., to explore their “attraction” or “repellent” effects regarding their application in integrated pest management (i.e., IPM). The results indicated that 12.7 μL/mL (E, E, E, E)-squalene, 3.2 μL/mL dioctyl phthalate, and 82.2 μL/mL ethyl benzene had a significantly attractive effect on the selective behavior ofF. occidentalis, while 10.7 μL/mL and 21.4 μL/mL 2,6-ditert-butyl-4-methyl phenol had a significantly repulsive effect on the selective behavior ofF. occidentalis, showing thatF. occidentalisresponds differently to specific concentrations of VOCs fromP. vulgarisplant emissions. Interestingly, the three compounds with the specific above concentrations, after being mixed in pairs, significantly attractedF. occidentaliscompared to the control treatment; however, the mixture with the three above compounds had no significant different effect onF. occidentaliscompared to the control treatment. It can be seen that the effect with the mixtures of three kinds of VOCs had the same function and may not get better. Simultaneously, the reasons for this result from the transcription levels of odorant-binding protein genes (OBPs) were determined. There were differences in the types and transcription levels of OBPs, which played a major role in the host selection behavior ofF. occidentalisunder the mixed treatment of different VOCs. It is presumed that there are specific VOCs fromP.vulgarisplants that have a good repellent or attracting effect on the selective behavior ofF.occidentalis, which can be used for the development of plant-derived insect attractants and repellents to serve as IPM in fields. But attention should be paid to the antagonism between plant-derived preparations and VOCs produced by plants themselves after application. Keywords:Phaseolus vulgarisL.;Frankliniella occidentalis;VOCs;attractive and repellant effects;selection behavior

A delta class glutathione S-transferase gene (BoGSTd2) is identified from Bradysia odoriphaga for the first time. Developmental expression analysis showed that expression of BoGSTd2 is significantly higher in the fourth instar larval stage and the adult stage. Tissue-specific expression analysis found that BoGSTd2 was expressed predominantly in the midgut and Malpighian tubules in the fourth instar larvae and the abdomen of adults. Expression of BoGSTd2 was significantly upregulated following exposure to chlorpyrifos and clothianidin. In vitro inhibition and metabolic assays indicated that recombinant BoGSTd2 could not directly metabolize chlorpyrifos and clothianidin. Nevertheless, disk diffusion assays indicated that BoGSTd2 plays an important role in protection against oxidative stress. RNAi assays showed that BoGSTd2 participates in the elimination of reactive oxygen species induced by chlorpyrifos and clothianidin. These results strongly suggest that BoGSTd2 plays an important role in chlorpyrifos and clothianidin detoxification in B. odoriphaga by protecting tissues from oxidative stress induced by these insecticides.

The western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) is a major pest insect in agriculture. However, few insecticides are effective for their control. The recombinant gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor-associated protein (rGABARAP) was examined as a potential target of the monoterpenoids responsible for their insecticidal activities. The insecticidal activity of anethole, linalool, and methyl eugenol (ME) was evaluated in the laboratory. The half-maximum lethal concentration (LC50) of ME against second-instar nymphs of F. occidentalis was 5.5 mg/L using membrane and leaf immersion methods, while that of spinosyn A was 1.0 mg/L. The dissociation constants of ME binding to rGABARAP were 1.30 and 4.22 μmol/L, respectively, according to microscale thermophoresis (MST) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurements. A molecular docking study showed interactions between ME and Tyr174 via π–π stacking. The MST and ITC experiments showed loss of specific binding between ME and the rGABARAPY174A mutant. Therefore, Tyr174 is a key amino acid residue of rGABARAP involving ME binding. The results revealed GABARAP as a potential target for the development of monoterpenoid insecticides.
