The enhancement of cellulose utilization in agricultural by-products, such as bagasse, holds significant importance in augmenting the value of secondary agricultural products. However, cellulose-based materials have limited application potential owing to their low strengths under wet and wet-low-temperature conditions. Improved mechanical properties of cellulose-based materials at wet and low temperatures can significantly enhance their suitability for application in cold chain processes. Furthermore, the effects of wet cryogenic conditions on cellulose-based materials are not well understood. In this study, composite films composed entirely of biomass are prepared via the co-solubilization of lignin and bagasse cellulose and then cured via hot pressing, which increases the wet and wet low-temperature strengths of the films. Furthermore, the mechanism by which cellulose/ lignin content influences the wet-low-temperature defects of films was investigated. Lignin self-polymerizes and hot pressing causes cross-linking in the cellulose-based films, which improves their performance in wet low-temperature environments. Furthermore, the micromorphologies, specific surface areas, and moisture distribution patterns of the cellulose films after wet -low-temperature treatment were investigated. The results indicate that cross-linking prevents large amounts of micro-nano scale free-water from entering the cellulose-based material, thereby preventing the formation of ice crystals at low temperatures, which can damage the microstructure. The results of this study can be used to develop bagasse cellulose/cellulose-based materials for applications in humid and low-temperature environments.

Nanogel based on polysaccharides has attracted the tremendous interest due to its unique performance as drug carrier for in vivo release. In this work, the multi-responsive nanogels were developed based on the tailor-modified sugarcane bagasse cellulose (SBC). In the presence of crosslinking agent cystamine bisacrylamide (CBA), the in-situ free radical copolymerization of methacrylated monocarboxylic sugarcane bagasse cellulose (MAMC-SBC) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in aqueous phase was conducted, thus leading to redox, pH and thermal-responsive nanogels. The results obtained from FT-IR, SEM and particle sizer showed that the nanogels were highly stable with the desired particle size ranging from 90 to 180 nm and contained targeted polymeric segments and linkage for multi-responsivity. Doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) as a model drug was effectively loaded into the nanogels, partly driven by strong electrostatic association; and the loading efficiency reached up to 82.7%. Moreover, the drug release could be readily manipulated by the addition of reducing agent, pH and temperature, which is attributed to the multi-responsive behavior of nanogels as carrier and synergetic effects. The performance of nanogels was also governed by the ratio of reactive MAMC-SBC and NIPAM during polymerization; and the ratio at 1:1(wt) led to the optimal structure of nanogels.

Fiber reinforcement is the most common method for modifying polylactic acid (PLA). However, poor compatibility between fibers and PLA, especially at high cellulose contents, can promote cellulose agglomeration in the continuous phase, which damages the mechanical properties of composite materials. To address these issues, bagasse cellulose (BC) was used as a substrate and bifunctional glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was used as a reactive monomer for graft modification. GMA-modified BC (BC-GMA)/PLA composite materials with different particle sizes were prepared using a blending grafting method, and the influence of the type and content of BC-GMA on the mechanical properties of the composite materials was explored. During the grafting modification of BC, a longer reaction time was found to result in smaller BC particles and a higher degree of grafting. For BC-GMA, the degree of grafting reached 27.02% with a maximum thermal decomposition temperature of 359.31°C. Furthermore, the BC-GMA/PLA composite material had a greater relative crystallinity of PLA, indicating that BC-GMA was evenly dispersed in the continuous phase. This study demonstrates that grafting modification can successfully achieve high cellulose loading in composite materials and thus reduce the production costs of PLA-based packaging materials.

Cellulose hydrogels are often prepared from native cellulose through a direct cellulose dissolution approach that often involves tedious process and solvent recovery problems. A self-supporting cellulose hydrogel was prepared by gelation of the TEMPO-oxidized bagasse cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) triggered by strong crosslinking between carboxylate groups and Zn2+. TEMPO process was used to generate negatively charged carboxylate groups on CNF surface to provide a high binding capability to Zn2+. Three TEMPO-oxidized CNFs of different carboxylate contents were prepared and characterized. TEM and AFM microscopes suggested that the sizes of CNFs were fined down and carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNFs) of 5–10 nm wide, 200–500 nm long, and carboxylate contents 0.73–1.29 mmol/g were obtained. The final structures and compressive strength of hydrogels were primarily influenced by interfibril Zn2+-carboxylate interactions, following the order of TOCNFs concentration > content of carboxylate groups > concentration of zinc ions. A CO2sensitive self-supporting cellulose hydrogel was developed as a colorimetric indicator of food spoilage for intelligent food packaging applications. Keywords:hydrogel;cellulose nanofibrils;zinc ions;ionic cross-linking;bagasse cellulose fiber

A PLA-based bagasse cellulose composite material with excellent performance and low cost was prepared. As one of the most commonly used thermoplastic materials in fused deposition modeling (FDM), PLA is currently the most widely used three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. It has the natural advantage of being biodegradable. However, due to its poor toughness, it cannot meet the requirements for 3D printing consumables in some areas. Therefore, polylactic acid (PLA) is used as the matrix, tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) are used as the free radical initiator, and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is used as the reaction monomer to prepare the PLA-GMA graft product, which realizes the toughening of PLA, and the PLA/PLA-GMA/BC (bagasse cellulose) composite material is prepared by the physical blending method, which realizes the reinforcement of PLA; it was proved by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1 H NMR that GMA was successfully grafted onto the PLA molecular chain, and the influence of the grafting rate on the toughness of PLA-GMA was explored. It was concluded that the grafting rate of PLA-GMA with the best toughness was 10.33%. The strength is 15.94 MPa, the modulus of elasticity is 969.01 MPa, and the elongation at break is 278.17%, which is about 44 times the elongation at break of pure PLA. The PLA/PLA-GMA/BC composite material with high cellulose loading was prepared by physical blending. The effect of PLA-GMA content, BC particle size and BC content on the properties of composite materials was explored. The results showed that PLA-GMA when the addition amount is 25%, the capacity enhancement effect is the best; when the additional amount of BC is as high as 40%, the PLA/PLA-GMA/BC composite still has good mechanical properties, and the addition of BC can promote the crystallization of PLA; DSC results show that BC can promote the crystallization of PLA, and the addition of PLA-GMA is not conducive to the composite material the formation of PLA crystalline regions; the temperature at the maximum decomposition rate of 40% BCB/25% PLA-GMA/PLA composite material is 355.44 ℃, and the thermal stability is improved. This study proves that the functional group properties of GMA realize the toughening and enhanced dual modification of polylactic acid, which expands the choice and application range of FDM 3D printing materials.

Cellulose aerogels are considered as ideal thermal insulation materials owing to their excellent properties such as a low density, high porosity, and low thermal conductivity. However, they still suffer from poor mechanical properties and low flame retardancy. In this study, mullite-fibers-reinforced bagasse cellulose (Mubce) aerogels are designed using bagasse cellulose as the raw material, mullite fibers as the reinforcing agent, glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent, and chitosan as the additive. The resulted Mubce aerogels exhibit a low density of 0.085 g/cm3, a high porosity of 93.2%, a low thermal conductivity of 0.0276 W/(m∙K), superior mechanical performances, and an enhanced flame retardancy. The present work offers a novel and straightforward strategy for creating high-performance aerogels, aiming to broaden the application of cellulose aerogels in thermal insulation.

In this work, the stepwise synthesis of interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) strategy was developed in an attempt to fabricate novel hydrogels consisting of sugarcane bagasse cellulose (SBC), carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) as a dual-responsive drug carrier. The pretreated and dissolved SBC was pre-crosslinked using epichlorohydrin in the presence of CMC, followed by in-situ free-radical polymerization of NIPAm in the presence of N,N′-Methylene-bis(acrylamide) as a crosslinking agent. The carboxyl groups in CMC and PNIPAm chains rendered the resulting hydrogel pH and thermal responsive. The results from scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy , thermogravimetric analysis and mechanical property testing demonstrated the successful formation of the IPN with proper structure and mechanical strength . The swelling experiments at different temperatures and pH showed the dual–sensibility of the hydrogels. Moreover, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model drug and loaded in the hydrogel; and the drug release behavior was revealed in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and simulated gastric fluid (SGF). The results indicated that the dual-responsive IPN hydrogel is of great potential for the controlled release of drug.

Biomass-based superabsorbent materials have gained widespread attention for their biocompatibility and high-water absorption capacity in hygiene products. However, slow liquid absorption rate and inadequate salt resistance limit their applications. This study prepared a rapid composite superabsorbent (CAAMC/PVA) featuring a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) by crosslinking bio co mpatible linear poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with a bagasse cellulose-g-poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/modified nano-CaCO 3 network (CAAMC). The CAAMC/PVA surface displays intricate pores and a multilayer structure with a water contact angle of 52°, indicating high hydrophilicity and an excellent water absorption rate. The amount and duration of PVA significantly influenced the formation of the semi-IPN structure in CAAMC/PVA. The –OH groups on PVA interacted with CAAMC through hydrogen bonding, facilitating the formation of the semi-IPN and establishing rapid water-absorbing channels. CAAMC/PVA can absorb 290 g/g deionized water, 47 g/g 0.9 wt % NaCl solution, 42 g/g artificial blood, and 27 g/g artificial urine within 1 min, outperforming some commercial products. Furthermore, adsorption kinetic and Materials Studio simulations revealed that the –OH groups of PVA and the –COOH groups of AA synergistically enhance the absorption rate, with maximum adsorption energy for water molecules of −3.545 kJ/mol. This study presents a novel strategy for developing rapid composite superabsorbent utilizing waste biomass.
