Counterfeit seeds cause a large loss in seed industry and crop production. Present study was undertaken to find a new anti-counterfeiting technology by labeling seeds with a fluorescent compound, safranine T (ST). Response surface analysis (RSA) experiment with two factors (ST concentration and seed soaking time) of 14 combinations was performed to investigate the ST effects on seed vigor and fluorescence showing in seedlings of two tobacco varieties, MS Yunyan 85 and Honghua Dajinyuan. After soaking in ST solutions, tobacco seeds were germinated for 16 days, then the germination index (GI), vigor index (VI), length of roots and shoots were determined. The optimum combinations of ST concentration and soaking time on GI, VI and length of shoots and roots were 0.57–0.69 mg/ml and 6.77–9.34 h for MS Yunyan 85 and 0.51–0.80 mg/ml and 5.81–7.39 h for Honghua Dajinyuan, respectively. Meanwhile, tobacco seedlings, treated with ST solutions from 0.3 to 1.5 mg/ml showed obviously fluorescence under illumination of green light. It suggests that soaking tobacco seeds in safranine T solution of suitable concentration can be used as a labeling technique for anti-counterfeiting in tobacco seeds.

The composite Langmuir-Blodgett films of organic photovoltaic materials demonstrate unique advantages in the fields of photovoltaic devices, sensing, and chiral optics by fusing the functionality of organic materials with the orderliness of LB technology through precise assembly at the molecular scale. In this study, composite LB films of o-phenylphenoxyethyl acrylate (OPPEA) and bis-etherfluorene acrylate (A-BPEF) with Congo red (CR), methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), and Saffron T (ST) dyes, respectively, have been successfully prepared by LB technology. The microstructure and optical properties of the composite films were systematically characterized by means of surface pressure-area isotherms (π-A curves), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), contact angle measurements, and UV–visible spectroscopy, and the acid-base gas response and photoelectric conversion properties were investigated. The results show that different dye subphases significantly affect the molecular arrangement and microscopic morphology of the composite films, and the OPPEA/CR and A-BPEF/CR composite films exhibit significant response to HCl and NH 3 gases, while the OPPEA/RhB and A-BPEF/ST composite films show excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency and stability. This study provides a theoretical basis for the design and application of high-performance organic photovoltaic materials.

Flexographic printing plates, which are typically composed of a metal substrate, an adhesive layer, and a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) photosensitive layer, are essential for achieving high-resolution patterns in flexographic printing technology. The adhesive layer, serving as the bonding interface between the metal and PVA layers, must exhibit strong adhesion to both metal and polymer surfaces, along with high toughness, mechanical strength, solvent resistance, and durable adhesion to meet the mechanical and chemical requirements of flexographic printing technology. Herein, inspired by the structure of mussel foot silk protein, this study integrates carbon–carbon double bonds, catechol, alcohol hydroxyl, and amino ester groups into a single polymer chain via a two-step reaction. Benefits to its rigid-flexible cross-linked network, the obtained adhesive exhibits good strength, modulus, and toughness. Specifically, its tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, and impact strength are 1.70 MPa, 0.85 GPa, 19.3 %, and 2.97 kJ/m 2 , respectively. Furthermore, the adhesive achieves a 180° peel strength of 2.26 N/mm with tinplate and 3.89 N/mm with flexographic printing plates. Notably, after 7 days of immersion in water, ethanol, and dimethylformamide, the 180° peel strength retention rate was as high as 96.9 %, 96.2 %, and 93.9 %, respectively. After being stored at room temperature for 28 days, the 180° peel strength retention rate reaches up to 98.3 %, highlighting its long-lasting durability. This mussel-inspired group integration strategy provides a straightforward and efficient approach for developing high-performance multi-functional adhesives, with significant potential for advancing flexographic printing.

Wound healing involves a cascade of four overlapping phases—hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling—that demand temporally coordinated intervention. However, most current hemostatic materials merely target the initial hemostatic stage and frequently impair physiological blood clotting, an essential endogenous platform for subsequent tissue regeneration. Herein, we report a novel powder hemostatic material that synergizes with endogenous clotting to orchestrate a continuous hemostasis-to-regeneration cascade. The powder consists of a lipoic acid-sodium lipoate copolymer (PolyLA-LANa) and quaternized chitosan (QCS). Upon contact with blood, this powder rapidly absorbs fluid and forms an adhesive hydrogel in situ via electrostatic and hydrogen bonding. The material concentrates platelets and coagulation factors to form a stable “material–clot” composite. This composite effectively seals wound sites and acts as a functional reservoir for the sustained release of LA-derived bioactive molecules. In rat and rabbit models (liver, femoral artery, muscle/vessel injury), the powder achieves rapid hemostasis with significantly reduced blood loss. In a challenging rat tooth extraction socket model, it stabilizes the clot, prevents dry socket formation, and promotes alveolar bone preservation and soft tissue healing. This “clotting-synergistic” strategy transforms passive hemostats into active regenerative platforms for complex bleeding wounds.

Dye-contaminated wastewater from the textile and dyeing industries poses severe environmental and health risks due to the persistence and toxicity of synthetic dyes. To address this issue, sodium alginate (SA)-based composite gel microspheres were fabricated via ionic crosslinking with calcium chloride followed by acid exchange to enhance structural stability and adsorption performance. Two types of functionalized adsorbents were synthesized and optimized: SA modified, and with stearyltrimethylammonium chloride (SA/S-H) and SA co -functionalized with poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (SA/S/PS-H). Comprehensive characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful preparation and compositional uniformity of the adsorbents. Adsorption kinetics for methylene blue (MB) followed the pseudo-second-order model, reaching equilibrium within 6 h, while isotherm data fitted the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model. Notably, the incorporation of PSSS significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity; at 45 °C, SA/S/PS-H achieved a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 900.91 mg/g, compared to 612.61 mg/g for SA/S-H. The dominant adsorption mechanisms were identified as electrostatic attraction, micropore filling and hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, the microspheres showed excellent reusability despite the interference of co-existing cations. This study presents a simple and scalable approach for constructing high-performance bio-based adsorbents with significant potential for sustainable and practical treatment of dye-laden wastewater.

The incorporation of antimicrobial functionalities into cellulose represents a significant advancement in biopolymer modification, enhancing its potential applications in biomedical and food sectors. In this study, we synthesized and characterized quaternary ammonium-functionalized cellulose (Q-Cell) and its intermediates, employing a three-step modification strategy (tosylation, amination, and quaternization). Structural and functional attributes of the derivatives were elucidated using SEM, TGA, FT-IR, and NMR ( 1 H and 13 C) spectroscopy. The optimized synthesis under an aqueous alkaline medium (H₂O/NaOH/triethylamine) at 5 °C for 5 h enabled selective functionalization while preserving the cellulose backbone integrity. A thorough assessment of the structural characterization and stability of the components revealed that the modified cellulose demonstrated superior antibacterial and antioxidant properties accompanied with enhanced thermal properties. The antimicrobial assessment revealed 100% inhibition of E. coli and S. aureus at 250 µg/L with MIC values of 4 and 8 µg/mL, respectively. Additionally, Q-Cell exhibited superior free radical-scavenging ability in superoxide, hydroxyl, and DPPH assays, attributed to electrostatic stabilization of radicals and charge-assisted hydrogen transfer mechanisms. These findings suggest that Q-Cell is a promising candidate for antimicrobial and antioxidant applications in biomedical, pharmaceutical, and food packaging industries.

Abnormal neuronal discharge due to disordered neurotransmitter homeostasis and harsh inflammation in epileptic focus is prone to cause recurrent seizures. However, current difficulties in drug delivery across blood-brain barrier (BBB) and regulation of complex pathological microenvironment hinder complete control of epilepsy with clinical therapies. Herein, a novel microenvironment-responsive drug-loaded polyelectrolyte nanocomplex (HCT-Fu@VB 6 ) formed by electrostatic self-assembly between tryptophan-modified hydroxypropyl chitosan (HCT) and fucoidan (Fu) with efficient vitamin B 6 (VB 6 ) loading, is developed for potent epilepsy treating, innovatively aiming to modulate neurotransmitters balance and attenuate the neuroinflammatory responses. Specifically, HCT confers the nanoparticles with specific binding affinity towards L-type amino acid transporter 1 expressed on brain endothelial cells, thereby significantly contributing to enhanced trans-BBB drug delivery efficiency. The fucoidan-containing polyelectrolyte nanocomplexes serve to provide intrinsic antioxidant property. Notably, the prepared polyelectrolyte nanocomplexes are dissociated in response to the mimic pathological neuronal discharges due to disturbed electrostatic equilibrium, facilitating accelerated VB 6 release for enhanced oxidative stress mitigation and effective neurotransmitter homeostasis modulation, acting as a competitive antagonist of ATP-gated purinergic P2RX7. The developed HCT-Fu@VB 6 nanoparticles demonstrate significant therapeutic efficacy as an electrically responsive trans-BBB drug delivery system, remarkably reducing seizure in epileptic rats while maintaining an excellent safety profile.

Anti-epilepsy drugs (AEDs), a common therapeutic approach for clinically treating epilepsy, suffer from low permeability toward the blood-brain barrier (BBB), side effect risks, and a failure to regulate the pathological microenvironment. These issues hinder the complete control of epilepsy and lead to a vicious cycle of inflammation-epileptogenesis. Herein, an α-lipoic acid (LA)-based nanozyme that loads phenytoin (PHT) and complexes calcium ions (LA@PHT-Ca 2+ ) is developed. This nanozyme combines the functions of delivering AEDs across the BBB and regulating undesirable microenvironments to treat epilepsy. Amphipathic LA self-assembles into stable nanoparticles in water with BBB crossing ability endowed by the transporting of LA through sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter. LA's enzyme-like and redox functions provide LA@PHT-Ca 2+ with excellent scavenging effects on several free radicals via cascade reactions, thereby protecting neurons from oxidative stress. Moreover, Ca 2+ disrupts neuronal respiration, resulting in reduced production of bioenergetic adenosine triphosphate and an improved hypoxic microenvironment. This leads to decreased expression of P-glycoprotein, a drug-efflux gating protein. This novel lipoic acid-based nanozyme, with intrinsic BBB crossing capability, prolonged intracellular drug retention time, and the ability to block the inflammation-epileptogenesis cycle, presents a satisfactory therapeutic effect in epileptic rats, resulting in attenuated symptoms and an improved microenvironment.

Chronic periodontitis is a long-standing thorny issue for oral health, characterized primarily by the excessive production and accumulation of reactive oxygen species, pathogenic bacterial infection, and the continuous loss of alveolar bone. In the present study, a poly(lipoic acid) (PolyLA) coenzyme-based tissue adhesive (PolyLA/Arg/Ga) was developed for the treatment of periodontitis. It functions by combining the nonantibiotic antimicrobial ion gallium ion (Ga3+ ) to resist pathogenic bacteria and promote osteogenesis; while the basic arginine not only stabilizes PolyLA at room temperature by forming salt bridge hydrogen bonds with its carboxyl groups but also serves as a cofactor, effectively regulating the release behavior of LA-based active molecules and Ga3+ by partially deprotonating the carboxyl groups on PolyLA. This, in turn, imparts significant antioxidant and antimicrobial properties to the adhesive. Thanks to the rich adhesive carboxyl groups on the surface of the adhesive and the structural stability of the hydrophobic PolyLA skeleton in a wet environment, The PolyLA/Arg/Ga exhibits long-lasting wet-resistant adhesion properties to biological tissues. Moreover, in vitro cell experiments and in vivo subcutaneous implantation studies demonstrate that the PolyLA/Arg/Ga adhesive has better cytocompatibility and histocompatibility. The PolyLA/Arg/Ga is explored as a tissue adhesive to treat a periodontitis model in rats. The results demonstrate that the PolyLA/Arg/Ga adhesive more effectively inhibited alveolar bone resorption and promoted periodontal tissue regeneration within 4 weeks compared to commercial patch. Thus, the simply designed yet multifunctional PolyLA/Arg/Ga bioadhesive offers an innovative approach for periodontitis management.

Periodontitis, a common chronic inflammatory disease caused by pathogenic bacteria, can be treated with diverse biomaterials by loading drugs, cytokines or proteins. However, these biomaterials often show unsatisfactory therapeutic efficiency due to their poor adhesion, short residence time in the wet and dynamic oral cavity and emerging drug resistance. Here we report a wet-responsive methacrylated gelatin (GelMA)-stabilized co-enzyme polymer poly(α-lipoic acid) (PolyLA)-based elastic patch with water-induced adhesion and softening features. In PolyLA-GelMA, the multiple covalent and hydrogen-bonding crosslinking between PolyLA and GelMA prevent PolyLA depolymerization and slow down the dissociation of PolyLA in water, allowing durable adhesion to oral periodontal tissue and continuous release of LA-based bioactive small molecule in periodontitis wound without resorting external drugs. Compared with the undifferentiated adhesion behavior of traditional adhesives, this wet-responsive patch demonstrates a favorable periodontal pocket insertion ability due to its non-adhesion and rigidity in dry environment. In vitro studies reveal that PolyLA-GelMA patch exhibits satisfactory wet tissue adhesion, antibacterial, blood compatibility and ROS scavenging abilities. In the model of rat periodontitis, the PolyLA-GelMA patch inhibits alveolar bone resorption and accelerates the periodontitis healing by regulating the inflammatory microenvironment. This biomacromolecule-stabilized coenzyme polymer patch provides a new option to promote periodontitis treatment.

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes with precise molecular-sieving performance have become increasingly important in chemical and pharmaceutical industries, desiring superior membranes with both high permeability and selectivity. Herein, the V-shape Tröger's base (TB) structure is incorporated in the polyamide network to engineer microporosity as well as the molecular-sieving performance of the thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide membrane for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN). The TFC membrane containing the TB structure features a rigid and contorted chain structure, which affords high and stable methanol permeability in OSN applications. Furthermore, the H-bond interaction between the H of amide groups and N in TB reinforces the interchain interaction, endowing the membrane with a precise selectivity to organic solutes. The as-prepared TFC membrane demonstrated high methanol permeance of 16.6 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and sieving performance to organic molecules with molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) down to 349 Da. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrates shape selectivity for organic solutes, exploiting the fine microporous structure. This study may provide insights into the molecular design of TFC membranes by finely tuning the molecular features for precise solute separations.

Traditional separation membranes used for dye removal often suffer from a trade-off between separation efficiency and water permeability. Herein, we propose a facile approach to prepare cyclodextrin-based high-flux nanofiber membranes by electrospinning and vapor-driven crosslinking processes. The application of glutaraldehyde vapor for crosslinking hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/laponite electrospun membranes can build interconnected structures and lead to the formation of a porous hierarchical layer. In addition, the incorporation of inorganic salt, laponite, can alter the crosslinking process, resulting in membranes with improved hydrophilicity and highly maintained electrospun nanofibrous morphology, which contributes to an ultrafast water flux of 1.0 × 105Lh−1m−2bar−1. Due to the synergetic effect of strong host–guest interaction and electrostatic interaction, the membranes exhibit suitable rejection toward anionic dyes with a high removal efficiency of >99% within a short time and achieve accurate separation for cationic against anionic dyes, accompanied by suitable recyclability with >97% separation efficiency after at least four separation–regenerations. The prepared membranes with remarkable separation efficiency and ultrafast permeation properties might be a promising candidate for high-performance membranes in water treatment.
