To find new chemical modifiers and new modified clays with excellent algae removal efficiency, the removal effects of betaine and five sulfobetaines including octyl sulfobetaine, caprylyl sulfobetaine, lauryl sulfobetaine, myristyl sulfobetaine, and palmityl sulfobetaine (SB3-16) against the harmful alga Alexandrium tamarense were observed. Betaine and the five sulfobetaines exhibited certain removal effects against A. tamarense with the highest removal efficiency by SB3-16. Hence, a series of modified clay, montmorillonite (MMT) intercalated by SB3-16 were prepared, and their removal efficiencies were evaluated. The organo-clay with 11 wt% of SB3-16 exhibited the highest removal efficiency against A. tamarense cells. Combining the environmentally benign nature of SB3-16 and the high efficiency of SB3-16 modified clay against A. tamarense , SB3-16 modified clay could be a favorable choice to control harmful algal blooms (HABs) of this species.

This study investigated the response of three toxic harmful algal blooms (HABs) species, Heterosigma akashiwo , Chattonella marina , and Alexandrium tamarense to coastal invasive plant, Spartina alterniflora . In this study, the growth of three HABs species were suppressed significantly by S. alterniflora extracts, showing a dose-response relationship. The raphidophyte H. akashiwo and C. marina exhibited higher inhibitory response with EC 50,7d decreased by 14% and 75% as compared to the dinoflagellate A. tamarense . C. marina was the most sensitive among the three species. S. alterniflora extracts disrupted algal cellular integrity and photosynthesis. Furthermore, the extracellular organic matters were detected by fluorescence excitation–emission matrix. Algal metabolites, protein-like substances (tyrosine-like peak and tryptophan-like peak) decreased as time prolonged and the humic-like substances (UVA marine humic-like peak) increased when algal cells were exposed to S. alterniflora extracts. These results provide new insights to the inhibition mechanism of S. alterniflora extracts on HABs species.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by Karenia mikimotoi have frequently happened in coastal waters worldwide, causing serious damages to marine ecosystems and economic losses. Photocatalysis has potential to in-situ inhibit algal growth using sustainable sunlight. However, the inactivation and detoxification mechanisms of microalgae in marine environment have not been systematically investigated. In this work, for the first time, visible-light-driven photocatalytic inactivation of K. mikimotoi was attempted using g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 immobilized films as a model photocatalyst. The inactivation efficiency could reach 64% within 60 min, evaluated by real-time in vivo chlorophyll-a fluorometric method. The immobilized photocatalyst films also exhibited excellent photo-stability and recyclability . Mechanisms study indicated photo-generated h + and 1 O 2 were the dominant reactive species. Algal cell rupture process was monitored by fluorescent microscope combined with SEM observation, which confirmed the damage of cell membrane followed by the leakage of the intracellular components including the entire cell nucleus. The physiological responses regarding up-regulation of antioxidant enzyme activity (i.e. CAT and SOD), intracellular ROSs level and lipid peroxidation were all observed. Moreover, the intracellular release profile and acute toxicity assessment indicated the toxic K. mikimotoi was successfully detoxified, and the released organic matter had no cytotoxicity. This work not only provides a potential new strategy for in-situ treatment of K. mikimotoi using sunlight at sea environments, but also creates avenue for understanding the inactivation and destruction mechanisms of marine microalgae treated by photocatalysis and the toxicity impacts on the marine environments.

Polyaluminum chloride modified clay (PAC-MC) is a safe and efficient red tide control agent that has been studied and applied worldwide. Although it is well known that the distribution of hydrolytic aluminum species in PAC affects its flocculation , little is known about the influence of particulars aluminum species on the microalgae removal efficiency of PAC-MC; this lack of knowledge creates a bottleneck in the development of more efficient MCs based on aluminum salts. The ferron method was used in this study to quantitatively analyze the distributions of and variations in different hydrolytic aluminum species during the process of microalgae removal by PAC-MC. The results showed that Al a , which made up 5%–20% of the total aluminum, and Al p , which made up 15%–55% of the total aluminum, significantly affected microalgae removal, with Pearson's correlation coefficients of 0.83 and 0.89, respectively. Most of the aluminum in the PAC-MC sank rapidly into the sediments, but the rate and velocity of settlement were affected by the dose of modified clay. The optimal dose of PAC-MC for precipitating microalgae was determined based on its aluminum profile. These results provide guidance for the precise application of PAC-MC in the control of harmful algal blooms .

Carbonyl compounds, especially polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs), are increasingly reported as teratogenic to grazers and deleterious to phytoplankton. While PUAs have been considered to be mainly produced by diatoms after cell wounding, little is known about whether microalgae other than diatoms, particularly harmful algal bloom (HAB)-forming species, produce carbonyl compounds. In this study, we analyzed the carbonyl compounds from eight common HAB-forming species ( Akashiwo sanguinea, Karenia mikimotoi, Karlodinium veneficum, Margalefidinium polykrikoides, Prorocentrum donghaiense, P. minimum, Scrippsiella trochoidea , and Heterosigma akashiwo ) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in full scan and selected ion monitoring (SIM) modes. Our results show a ubiquitous presence of carbonyl compounds in both dissolved and particulate forms in all species we examined. In the full scan mode, 133 chromatographic peaks were detected from 51 samples altogether. Both the varieties of carbonyl compounds and their quantities were algal species dependent, although most of the carbonyl compounds could not be fully identified according to the mass spectral database only due to the unavailability of enough standards for all analytes. Aided with nine standards in SIM mode, we further identified and quantified all nine aldehydes (2-methyl-2-pentenal, trans-2-nonenal, cis-6-nonenal, 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal, trans-2-hexenal, trans-2-decenal, 2,4-heptadienal, trans-trans-2,4-octadienal, and trans-trans-2,4-decadienal). Four of these nine aldehydes were detected in particulate form, which confirmed that trans-2-nonenal could be produced by K. mikimotoi, Karl. veneficum, P. donghaiense, P. minimum, S. trochoidea , and H. akashiwo , 2,4-heptadienal and trans-trans-2,4-decadienal by A. sanguinea, M. polykrikoides , and S. trochoidea , and trans, trans-2,4-octadienal by S. trochoidea , respectively. We proved that some dinoflagellate and raphidophyte species could contribute to the pool of carbonyl compounds including PUAs in a marine ecosystem. Some carbonyl compounds, particularly those in high cell quota and/or dissolved concentration, may be related to fish-killing or allelopathy which needs further identification and quantification.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), which are promoted by eutrophication and intensified by global warming, occur worldwide. Allelochemicals, which are natural chemicals derived from plants or microbes, are emerging weapons to eliminate these blooms. However, the cost and technical challenges have limited the discovery of novel antialgal allelochemicals. Herein, the decomposition of agricultural straws is manipulated by white-rot fungi and achieved elevated antialgal efficiency. The transcriptomic analysis reveals that nutrient limitation activated fungal decomposition. By using a comparative nontarget metabolomics approach, a new type of allelochemical sphingosines (including sphinganine, phytosphingosine, sphingosine, and N -acetylsphingosine) is identified. These novel natural algaecides exhibit superior antialgal capability, with as high as an order of magnitude lower effective concentration on blooming species than other prevalent allelochemicals. The co-expression relationship between transcriptomic and metabolomic results indicate that sphinganine is strongly correlated with the differentially expressed lignocellulose degradation unigenes. The algal growth suppression is triggered by the activation of programmed cell death, malfunction of algal photosystem and antioxidant system, the disruption on CO 2 assimilation and light absorption. The sphingosines reported here are a new category of allelochemicals in addition to the well-known antialgal natural chemicals, which are potential species-specific agents for HABs control identified by multi-omics methodology.

The fish-killing dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi frequently blooms in China and poses a threat to food safety and human health. To better understand harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by K. mikimotoi and predict the risk of HABs under climate change, the combined effect of nitrate and norfloxacin (NOR) on the growth of K. mikimotoi was tested. A growth model was used to test the effects of nutrients and pollutants on the carrying capacity of the unicellular algae. The carrying capacity increased with increasing concentrations of nitrate and NOR, reaching a maximum at 62.2 μmol L −1 of nitrate and 9.03 mg L −1 of NOR. The calculated carrying capacity of K. mikimotoi in the China Sea showed a declining trend from nearshore to offshore, with a value >30 × 10 6 cells L −1 in the estuary of the Changjiang River and Hangzhou Bay. The HAB index proposed in this study as a measurement of HAB risk was constructed using the carrying capacity and relative abundance from the MaxEnt (maximum entropy) model. The index showed that HABs caused by K. mikimotoi consecutively occurred in Zhejiang and Fujian coastal waters and predicted that they will continue until 2100, regardless of the greenhouse gas emission scenario. The center of the integrated area moved northward, with a range of 120–900 km. The HAB index integrates the characteristics of the carrying capacity and suitability of habitats, and expresses the information contained in the intensive and extensive variables that affect HAB occurrence. This index is a promising predictor of HAB risk in coastal waters.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) and the invasion of smooth cordgrass ( Spartina alterniflora ) have become important environmental problems in intertidal zones of China, which caused serious damage on the coastal ecological systems. By using S. alterniflora as algaecide, this helps to utilize this invasive plant, in addition, is expected to help to control the expansion of S. alterniflora . The potential of S. alterniflora in HABs mitigation was investigated on controlling Phaeocystis globosa (haptophyceae) and Prorocentrum donghaiense (dinophyceae). The growth of both HABs species was significantly inhibited at high concentrations, and P. globosa was more sensitive than P. donghaiense . Furthermore, the extracts of S. alterniflora reduced the effective quantum yield, photosynthetic efficiency, and relative maximal electron transport rate of both algal species at high concentrations, which implies a disruption on their photosynthetic system. Flavonoids, which were previously known as antialgal chemicals, were found to be abundant in the extracts of S. alterniflora by UPLC-MS detection. Our results revealed that the potential of S. alterniflora as a novel antialgal agent for controlling HABs, simultaneously, resource utilization possibility for the invasive plant S. alterniflora .

The development of safe and efficient materials to remove harmful algae is continuing to be a major challenge in controlling cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophication waters. Herein, we present a novel strategy that combines Zinc oxide (ZnO) with carbon nitride composites to efficiently collect the intact Microcystis aeruginosa cells. The influence of different dosages of g-C 3 N 4 precursors were assessed and the synthesized catalysts were characterized. The results revealed that 93.0 % of algae cells were removed by the ZnO/CN (2:1) system within 10 min at a dose of 4.0 g L −1 . Regardless of the variation in initial cell density, the final removal efficiency reached >90.0 %. The integrity of the algal cell membrane was observed by K + release and intracellular organic matter such as MC-LR during the removal process, which were further verified by SEM images. The Zeta potential values indicated that the improved effectiveness may be attributed to the electrostatic attraction and coagulation by ZnO/CN. The removal mechanism of ZnO/CN was revealed through charge neutralizing flocculation and the different types of flocculants were compared. The present work provides a new insight in using ZnO nanoparticles modified carbon-based composites in treating cyanobacterial blooms.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are recognized as promising bio-based flocculants for controlling harmful algal blooms (HABs). Due to the charge shielding effect in seawater and the strong mobility of algae cells, CNC can’t effectively remove Phaeocystis globosa from seawater. To solve this problem, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was used to enhance the coagulation of CNC for rapidly removal of P. globosa . The results showed that 91.7% of Chl-a, 95.2% of OD 680 , and 97.2% of turbidity of P. globosa were reduced within 3 h with the use of 200 mg L −1 of CNC and 20 mg L −1 of PMS. The removal of P. globosa was consisted of inactivation and flocculation. Notably, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrums and quenching experiments revealed that the inactivation of P. globosa was dominated by PMS oxidation and 1 O 2 . Subsequently, CNC entrained inactivated algal cells to settle to the bottom to achieve efficient removal of P. globosa. The content of total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) decreased significantly, indicating that a low emission risk of algal cell effluent was produced in the CNC-PMS system. In view of the excellent performance on P. globosa removal, we believe that the CNC-PMS system has great potential for HABs treatments.

In recent years, the frequent occurrence of algal blooms has posed continuous threats to aquatic ecosystems and social safety. Environmentally friendly algae-inhibiting methods utilizing allelopathic substances offer advantages such as convenient application and low costs, presenting a bright application prospect in the fields of water and ecological restoration. This study aimed to investigate the procedure for extracting total flavonoids from Zanthoxylum bungeanum leaves and assess allelopathic mechanism of Z. bungeanum leaf extracts on Microcystis aeruginosa . The optimal extraction conditions were determined as follows: solvent-to-material ratio = 10 mL/g; extraction time = 55 min; ethanol volume fraction = 80%; and ultrasonic temperature = 80 °C. Antioxidant activity tests revealed that Z. bungeanum leaf extracts exhibit superior capacity compared to Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) but inferior to Vitamin C (VC). Moreover, high-concentration Z. bungeanum leaf extracts can disrupt the structures of oxygen-evolving complexes at the donor sides of photosystem II (PSII) reaction center and influence energy distribution at PSII reaction centers, thereby inhibiting electron transmission activities at both donor and receptor sides of the PSII reaction center. The elucidated allelopathic mechanism of Z. bungeanum leaf extracts provides theoretical evidence for the algal-bloom control and the development of allelopathic algae-inhibiting agents, offering a reference for the further comprehensive development and utilization of Z. bungeanum . Graphical High-concentration Z. bungeanum leaf extracts can disrupt the structures of oxygen-evolving complexes at the donor sides of photosystem II (PSII) reaction center and influence energy distribution at PSII reaction centers, thereby inhibiting electron transmission activities at both donor and receptor sides of the PSII reaction center.

Ipomoea cairica (L.) Sweet is an invasive plant that cause serious invasion and damage in South China. Phaeocystis globosa is a common harmful algal bloom species on the southeast coast of China. Both species cause great environmental disturbances and serious economic damage to the localregion. This study explored the potential inhibitory effects of I. cairica leaf extracts on P. globosa . The results showed that solitary cells growth was inhibited at extract concentrations higher than 0.25 % (v/v). Although the colony diameter did not change, and the colony number increased rapidly in the first 36 h, we found that cells in the colonies had been damaged using scanning electron microscope and SYTOX-Green staining at 48 h. In addition, the rapid light-response curve of cells treated with extracts decreased, along with down-regulation of photosynthesis-related genes ( psbA, psbD, and rbcL ), suggesting damage to the photosynthetic system. Finally, the activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase increased with increasing treatment time, indicating that cells activate antioxidant enzyme defense systems to alleviate the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Increased ROS levels disrupt cell membranes, alter cellular ultrastructures, and ultimately lead to cell death. This study not only achieved the reuse of invasive plant resources, but also demonstrated that I. cairica leaf extract has potential value as an algaecide.
