Utilization of chitin and shrimp shell for selective acetic acid production using aluminum salts in aqueous media

Xiao Du,Tengfei Li,Lumei Wang,Dezhang Ren,Wenhui He,Zhibao Huo

In this paper, an alkali-free route for the conversion of chitin and shrimp shell to acetic acid (AA) using aluminum salts in aqueous media was reported for the first time. The proposed method demonstrated several advantages, including simplicity, effectiveness, and superior environmental and economic benefits compared to previous approaches. Notably, it achieved a significant breakthrough in the yields of AA derived from chitin and shrimp shells. Under the optimal conditions, the yield of AA reached the maximum value of 81.4 %. Combined with theoretical calculation and characterization, a possible transformation mechanism was proposed, and it was proved that the presence of aluminum salts would change the main reaction pathway and participate in the preparation of AA in the form of polymers. This study provided a novel idea for the resource utilization of chitin and waste shell materials into valuable chemicals and also for the treatment of environmental pollution.

Electrochemical detection of hydroquinone based on marine biomass carbon from shrimp shells as electrode modifier

Yang Liu,Zejun Zhang,Yushu Li,Fan Shi,Yijing Ai,Baoli Wang,Siyue Zhang,Xiaoping Zhang,Wei Sun

An electrochemical sensor based on marine biomass shrimp shell-derived porous carbon (SSPC) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was developed for the detection of hydroquinone (HQ) in this paper. The resultant SSPC was characterized by different methods including scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method was used to evaluate the pore structure and surface area of SSPC. The electrochemical behaviors of SSPC/GCE were explored by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The SSPC/GCE demonstrated linear response ranges of 5.0–25.0 μM and 25.0–1200.0 μM for HQ analysis with the limit of detection as 0.18 μM (S/N = 3). Additionally, the method had been successfully applied to determine HQ in real lake water sample, which provided potential applications in further sensing study.

One-pot chitin pulping using recyclable superbase-based protic ionic liquid

Qingqing Tao,Felipe Nunes Henriquez,Kang Ding,Wai Lun Man,Matthew Y. Lui

The application of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents offers a promising opportunity for a more environmentally friendly and straightforward chitin purification process from crustacean shells. Nonetheless, the insufficient recyclability of these ionic solvents poses a challenge to the long-term sustainability of such extraction methods. Thus, there is a strong imperative to focus on employing easily recyclable ionic liquids for chitin isolation, enhancing the overall sustainability of the process. In this investigation, a direct chitin purification procedure that utilized pulping liquors consisting of the superbase-based protic ionic liquid 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-enium acetate and its precursor, acetic acid, was developed. It was demonstrated that these pulping liquors were capable of simultaneously deproteinate and demineralize shrimp shells to generate chitins with higher purity, degree of N -acetylation and crystallinity than commercially obtained chitin. More significantly, the pulping liquors can be recycled to their pure form in high quantity by simple distillation under reduced pressure, allowing the reuse of these mixtures, which give chitin of nearly identical purity.

Extraction of chitin from white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) shells using binary ionic liquid mixtures

Qiqi Dong,Weiqiang Qiu,Li Li,Ningping Tao,Ashley Liang Wang,Shanggui Deng,Yinzhe Jin

Binary ionic liquid mixtures (IL) were used for the first time to extract chitin from shrimp shells. Two ionic liquids, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazole acetate ([EMIM][Ac]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole bromide salt ([BMIM][Br]), were mixed at ratios of 0:1, 1:1, 3:2, 4:1, and 1:0 and the properties of the IL and the characteristics of extracted chitin were investigated. With an increase in proportion of [EMIM][Ac], the viscosity, dielectric constant, and dielectric loss of IL gradually decreased ( p  < 0.05), whereas the conductivity, radius of gyration increased ( p  < 0.05). The best quality of chitin using IL (3:2) was achieved when the viscosity, conductivity, and radius of gyration were 0.16 ± 0.00 Pa‧s, 0.30 ± 0.01 S/m, and 0.10 ± 0.00 nm, respectively. The yield of chitin extraction using IL was 35.72 ± 0.31 %, and this was approximately 2.04 times higher than that using the acid-base method (17.50 ± 0.16 %). The Whiteness index (WI) of chitin extracted using IL (3:2) (94.93 ± 0.09) was better than commercial chitin (93.31 ± 0.11), and the secondary structure, surface morphology and thermal stability were similar to commercial chitin. Therefore, the binary ionic liquid mixture can be used as an effective green solvent to extract chitin from shrimp shells.

Hydrothermal carbonization of shrimp shell with glucose remarkably impacts pore development in activation

Zahra Essa Khan,Mengjiao Fan,Yuchen Jiang,Shu Zhang,Murtaza Khan,Qurshia Choudhry,Muhammad Rashid,Zanib Anwar,Sobia Kousar,Xun Hu

Herein, hydrothermal carbonization treatment of shrimp shells or together with glucose at 200 ºC plus subsequent activation with K 2 C 2 O 4 at 800 ºC was conducted, aiming to understand the retainment of organics and development of pore structures of resulting activated carbon. The results indicated that the organics in shrimp shells were highly unstable and the activation formed activated carbon with a mass yield of 5.6 %. Hydrothermal carbonization resulted in the leaching of some organics but promoted the aromatization of others, which in overall enhanced the resistivity of remaining organics towards cracking in activation, increasing the yield of activated carbon to 10.3 %. However, the leaching of a significant portion of aliphatic organics also decreased the specific surface area to 1128.1 m 2 /g (1593.2 m 2 /g from direct activation of shrimp shells. The co-hydrothermal carbonization of shrimp shells with glucose further increased activated carbon yield and enhanced the specific surface area of the activated carbon (1326.6 m 2 /g), due to additional aliphatic organics formed. Additionally, direct activation of shrimp shells formed activated carbon with dominant micropores (89.6 %), while hydrothermal carbonization of shrimp shells plus activation formed mainly mesopores (71.7 %). The presence of glucose in co-hydrothermal carbonization not only rendered micropores to dominate (80.3 %) but also retained appreciable amount of mesopores, forming activated carbon of superior capacity for the adsorption of methylene blue. Leaching of organics via the hydrothermal carbonization, promoted the formation of mesopores/macropores while suppressed the generation of micropores. Additionally, hydrothermal carbonization treatment resulted in wrapping of SiO 2 with organics, deterring further removal of SiO 2 via solid phase reactions with K 2 C 2 O 4 .

Efficient production of GlcNAc in an aqueous-organic system with a Chitinolyticbacter meiyuanensis SYBC-H1 mutant

Hao Zhi-kui,Li Jian-song,Wang Dan-hua,He Fei,Xue Jing-shi,Yin Liang-hong,Zheng Hua-bao

Objectives Shellfish waste is a primary source for making N -acetyl- d -glucosamine. Thus, establishing a high-efficiency and low-cost bioconversion method to produce N -acetyl- d -glucosamine directly from shellfish waste was promising. Results A mutant C81 was obtained from Chitinolyticbacter meiyuanensis SYBC-H1 via 60 Co-γ irradiation. This mutant C81 showed the highest chitinase activity of 9.8 U/mL that was 85% higher than the parent strain. The mutant C81 exhibted improved antioxidant activities, including total antioxidant capacity, superoxide radical ability, and hydroxyl radical scavenging ability, compared to that of the parent strain. Four out of nine organic solvents increased the chitinase activity by 1.9%, 6.8%, 11.7%, and 15.8%, corresponding to methylbenzene, n-heptane, petroleum ether, and n-hexane, respectively. The biphase system composed of aqueous and hexane presented a five-fold reduction of cell viability compared to the control. Using a continuous fermentation bioconversion process, 4.2 g/L GlcNAc was produced from crayfish shell powder with a yield of 80% of the chitin content. Conclusions This study demonstrated that the mutant C81 is suitable for converting crayfish shell powder into GlcNAc in an aqueous-organic system.

Adsorption of Congo red from aqueous solution onto shrimp shell powder

Youzhou Zhou,Liuqin Ge,Neng Fan,Meisheng Xia

Two novel adsorbents derived from shrimp shell were prepared and their adsorption performances on Congo red were investigated. The results suggested that treated shrimp shell powder exhibited a higher adsorption capacity than raw shrimp shell powder. The factors of initial concentration, solution pH, adsorption time, and temperature were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of treated shrimp shell powder calculated according to the Langmuir isotherm model was 288.2 mg/g, which is much higher than that of chitin. The adsorption behavior could be fitted well by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Intra-particle diffusion model was also used to study the adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameters indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption. Shrimp shell powder exhibited enough advantages such as large adsorption capacity, low cost, simple processing methods and high specific gravity compared with chitin or chitosan. This work confirmed that the shrimp shell biosorbent had a potential to be applied in dye wastewater treatment area.

One-pot production of chitin with high purity from lobster shells using choline chloride–malonic acid deep eutectic solvent

Ping Zhu,Zhongji Gu,Shu Hong,Hailan Lian

For the first time in this study, chitin was solely extracted from lobster shells through a fast, easy and eco-friendly method using deep eutectic solvents (DESs), consisting of mixtures of choline chloride–thiourea (CCT), choline chloride–urea (CCU), choline chloride–glycerol (CCG) and choline chloride–malonic acid (CCMA). The physiochemical properties of the isolated chitins were compared with those of the chemically prepared one and commercial one from shrimp shells. Results showed that CCT, CCU and CCG DESs had no important effect on the elimination of proteins and minerals, while chitin obtained by CCMA DES showed a high purity. The yield (20.63   ±   3.30%) of chitin isolated by CCMA DES was higher than that (16.53   ±   2.35%) of the chemically prepared chitin. The chitin obtained by CCMA DES could be divided into two parts with different crystallinity (67.2% and 80.6%), which also had different thermal stability. Chitin from lobster shells showed porous structure, which is expected to be used for adsorption materials and tissue engineering.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of polyvinyl chloride and shrimp shells for carbon materials: Synergistic conversion and electrochemical properties

Mengxue Ling,Dachao Ma,Qisong Zhong,Cheng Liao,Zheng Liu,Dongbo Wang,Biao Han,Qingge Feng

Plastic and biomass waste are high quality carbon sources for carbon materials. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and shrimp shells were selected to investigate the synergistic conversion of co-hydrothermal carbonization and the electrochemical properties of carbon materials. It was found that the particle agglomeration of PVC plastics could be effectively avoided, thus, the dechlorination from UPVC tubes and shrimp shells at 220 °C for 120 min (HUPS 220–120) was up to 100.9 wt%, which was four times higher than solo hydrothermal treatment of UPVC tubes. The dissolution of calcium and magnesium in PVC plastics or shrimp shells was positively and linearly related to the removal of chloride ions on PVC plastics, with the molar ratio close to 1:2. The hydrolysis of shrimp shells catalyzed by hydrogen chloride (HCl), providing abundant nucleophilic groups, which in turn substituted for chlorine on PVC to form polyethers and polyamines. Interestingly, the co-hydrothermal treatment induced O and N functional groups on the hydrochars to maintain and evolve into C O and pyridinic-N after further carbonization and activation. With the features of large specific surface (1161.3 m 2 ·g −1 ), numerous microporous (87.66 %), high graphitization degree (I D /I G =0.85), and abundant C O and pyridinic-N, the carbon materials derived from hydrochar (CHPS 220–60) demonstrated strong charge storage capacity, good conductivity, and multiple redox potentials, raising the capacitive performance as high as 277.5 F·g −1 at 0.5 A·g −1 . This work aims to provide an effective method not only for the upcycling of PVC plastics and shrimp shells but also for the preparation of energy storage materials.

The utilization of lobster shell to prepare low-cost biochar for high-efficient removal of copper and cadmium from aqueous: Sorption properties and mechanisms

Jiechen Ma,Wei Huang,Xuesheng Zhang,Yucheng Li,Ning Wang

The target of this research was to explore the adsorption characteristics and mechanisms for the adsorption of copper and cadmium by lobster shell biochar. Two biochars were produced from lobster shells through pyrolysis at 300 and 600℃ (labeled LS300 and LS600). The kinetics and isotherm adsorption curves of Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ on these lobster shell biochars were determined. The adsorption kinetic curves were best depicted by the two-compartment model, and the Toth model was suitable for the isotherm data of Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ . Compared with those of LS300, the adsorption capacities of LS600 for Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ were greater. The original biochar and Cu 2+ or Cd 2+ -loaded biochar were analyzed by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XRD to explore the adsorption mechanisms. Ion exchange with cations, precipitation with minerals, and interaction with functional groups were the potential mechanisms for the adsorption of Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ by the lobster shell biochars. The contribution rates of these three mechanisms were also calculated. The adsorption mechanism of Cu 2+ onto the prepared biochar was dominated by ion exchange, while cation exchange and interaction with functional groups were the primary adsorption mechanisms of LS300 and LS600 for Cd 2+ , respectively. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of lobster shell biochar was higher than that of other reported biochars. The results of this study indicate that lobster shell biochar is a highly effective adsorbent for the removal of Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ from contaminated water.

Chitin-rich shrimp shells-based nitrogen-doped green fluorescence carbon dots: New insights for multi-orbital applications

Mingying Chen,Danni Wu,Xiaoye Deng,Yingjie Li,Xiaoqin Sun,Junjie Ma,Congjin Chen,Xiufen Liao,Xijun Liu

Carbon dots (CDs), revolutionary carbon-based nanomaterial, have demonstrated tremendous potential for applications across multiple areas. Chitin-rich shrimp shells are a sustainable and renewable resource, and their utilization can turn waste into treasure. This work is dedicated to efficiently preparing nitrogen-doped green fluorescent CDs (N-CDs) for multi-modal applications from waste shrimp shells by hydrothermal methods. The detailed spectroscopic characterization reveals that the N-CDs possess excellent optical properties. The quantum yield is as high as 33.2%. Specifically, the N-CDs show excellent selectivity and sensitivity in the quantitative detection of Fe 3+ . Additionally, in response to pH changes, the surface functional groups of the N-CDs undergo protonation and deprotonation, leading to corresponding alterations in fluorescence colors. Capitalizing on this characteristic, a visual portable pH-measuring platform is developed. This platform ingeniously integrates nanoscale optical sensors with smartphone image processing technology, enabling real-time and highly accurate monitoring of environmental pH levels. Furthermore, they are ideal materials for fluorescence anti-counterfeiting detection due to their unique optical properties. This work simultaneously accomplishes the reuse of waste biomass and provides novel insights for multi-orbital applications, including metal ion detection, pH monitoring, and the anti-counterfeiting field.

Adsorption of Tetracycline by Shrimp Shell Waste from Aqueous Solutions: Adsorption Isotherm, Kinetics Modeling, and Mechanism

Jing Chang,Zhen Shen,Xiude Hu,Emily Schulman,Chunyue Cui,Qingjie Guo,Hongjing Tian

The highly efficient removal of tetracycline (TC) from an aqueous solution was accomplished by using the raw shrimp shell waste (SSW) as an environmentally friendly adsorbent. The SSW without any treatment removed TC more efficiently than the SSW after being treated with HCl and NaOH solutions. The SSW was characterized using nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy alongside energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a thermogravimetric-derivative thermogravimetry analyzer, and a ζ-potential analyzer. The maximum adsorption capacity of 400 mg/L SSW was 229.98 mg/g for 36 h at 55 °C. Both the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well described the experimental data. According to the values of the Gibbs free energy and enthalpy changes, the TC adsorption by SSW proved to be spontaneous and endothermic. The TC adsorption process was controlled by intraparticle diffusion and liquid film diffusion.
