Ultrafast Screening of a Novel, Moderately Hydrophilic Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme-Inhibitory Peptide, RYL, from Silkworm Pupa Using an Fe-Doped-Silkworm-Excrement-Derived Biocarbon: Waste Conversion by Waste

Long Liu,Yanan Wei,Qing Chang,Huaju Sun,Kungang Chai,Zuqiang Huang,Zhenxia Zhao,Zhongxing Zhao

A novel, moderately hydrophilic peptide (RYL) with high ACE-inhibitory activity was screened ultrafast via a concept of waste conversion using waste. This novel peptide was screened from silkworm pupa using an Fe-doped porous biocarbon (FL/Z-SE) derived from silkworm excrement. FL/Z-SE possessed magnetic properties and specific selection for peptides due to Fe’s dual functions. The selected RYL, which has moderate hydrophilicity (LogP = −0.22), exhibited a comparatively high ACE-inhibitory activity (IC50 = 3.31 ± 0.11 μM). The inhibitory kinetics and docking-simulation results show that, as a competitive ACE inhibitor, RYL formed five hydrogen bonds with the ACE residues in the S1 and S2 pockets. In this work, both the screening carbon material and the selected ACE-inhibitory peptide were derived from agricultural waste (silkworm excrement and pupa), which offers a new way of thinking about the development of advanced uses of the silkworm byproducts and wastes.

Removal and Mechanism of Cadmium, Lead and Copper in Water by Functional Modification of Silkworm Excrement Biochar

Pengyang Bian,Yixuan Liu,Xiaoqin Zheng,Weibo Shen

A new type of biochar, called GBC, was prepared from silkworm excrement, and then modified by chitosan combined with pyromellitic dianhydride. The removal of mono-metal and polymetals (Pb, Cd and Cu) from an aqueous solution by GBC was investigated in this research. Compared to unmodified biochar, the removal rate of Pb and Cd by GBC was about 12% higher, while that of Cu was about 94.6% higher. It also shows the types of functional groups in biochar have a great impact on their adsorption. The removal of Pb is mainly involved in the N-C=O functional group, the removal of Cd is mainly involved in N-containing functional group and C=C bond, and that of Cu is mainly involved in N-containing functional group, carboxyl group, hydroxyl group, and a carbonyl group. Five adsorption–desorption cycles of GBC were carried out, and it was found that the adsorption capacities of GBC for Pb, Cd and Cu decreased by 7.28%, 10.78% and 6.07%, respectively, indicating that GBC had a good renewable performance. The adsorption capacity of GBC for Cu in different water samples is between 89.62 and 93.47 mg·g−1, indicating that GBC has great application potential for the removal of Cu in wastewater. Keywords:silkworm excrement biochar;functional modification;heavy metals;competitive adsorption;adsorption mechanism

Biochar Nanozyme from Silkworm Excrement for Scavenging Vapor-Phase Free Radicals in Cigarette Smoke

Quanyi Liu,Sheng Zhao,Yihong Zhang,Xueying An,Quan Wang,Sirong Li,Anqi Lin,Yan Du,Hui Wei

Serious lung diseases and other health problems caused by tobacco consumption are becoming more and more prominent all over the world. Scavenging the excessive harmful free radicals in cigarette smoke is proven to be an effective method in reducing the above problems. Carbon-based nanozymes have been widely studied due to their ability of scavenging free radicals. Accordingly, the biochar derived from silkworm excrement was reported as a nanozyme with free radical scavenging ability. The biochar nanozyme calcination at 900 °C with better free radical scavenging abilities was loaded into commercial cigarette filters for the following free radical scavenging verification in tobacco smoke. Mouse model results reveal the lung tissue could be improved by the addition of biochar nanozyme. This work not only provides an effective approach to reduce the harm caused by tobacco but also provides potential applications to rationally realize low-cost, ease of production, and a wide variety of biochar sources.

Porous Fe@C Composites Derived from Silkworm Excrement for Effective Separation of Anisole Compounds

Yuxiang Wu,Yan Huang,Hong Huang,Yaseen Muhammad,Zuqiang Huang,Joseph Winarta,Yanjuan Zhang,Shuangxi Nie,Zhongxing Zhao,Bin Mu

Silkworm excrement is a very useful biomass waste, composed of layer-structured fats and proteins, which are great precursors for carbon composite materials. In this work, new porous composites derived from silkworm excrement were prepared for selective separation of flavor 4-methylanisole from the binary 4-methylanisole/4-anisaldehyde mixture. In particular, the silkworm excrement, possessing a unique nanosheet structure, is converted into a graphite-like carbon by a simple calcination strategy followed by a metal-ion-doping procedure. This Fe@C composite exhibits a special nano-spongy morphology, anchoring Fe3C/Fe5C2 on the carbon nanosheets. Density functional theory simulations showed that 4-methylanisole presents a stronger π–π interaction and attraction forces with sp2 carbon nanosheets in Fe@C composites than 4-anisaldehyde. The selective adsorption experiments further confirmed that the Fe@C composites exhibited a 4-methylanisole capacity of 7.3 mmol/g at 298 K and the highest selectivity of 17 for an equimolar 4-methylanisole/4-anisaldehyde mixture among the examined adsorbents including MOFs and commercial activated carbon materials, which demonstrates the potential of this low-cost and eco-friendly porous carbon material as a promising sustainable adsorbent.

Ultrasonic-assisted modification of a novel silkworm-excrement-based porous carbon with various Lewis acid metal ions for the sustained release of the pesticide thiamethoxam

Yannan Wei,Yuxiang Wu,Qing Chang,Meixuan Xie,Xinhui Wang,Jinwen Mo,Xuekun He,Zhenxia Zhao,Zhongxing Zhao

The ultrasonic-assisted modification of novel silkworm-excrement-based porous carbon (PCSE) with various Lewis acid metal ions (LAMIs) was prepared and applied for the sustained release of the pesticide thiamethoxam (TM). The effects of the LAMIs on the TM adsorption and release mechanism were analyzed and investigated using hard and soft acid–base theory (HSAB). The results showed that the prepared PCSE showed a micro/mesoporous structure and its adsorption capacity for TM reached 616.8 mg g−1 at 298 K. The LAMIs were coordinated with acid oxygen groups on the PCSE and were loaded as the corresponding metal oxides with a lower valence under an ultrasonic field. The low valence of the LAMIs significantly decreased the interaction between TM (hard base, χ = 4.08) and the LAMI-modified PCSEs due to the decrease in the local acidity of the PCSE. Thus, the release amount and release rate of TM from the LAMI-modified PCSEs was successfully enhanced in the order of Fe3+/Fe2+ < Cu2+/Cu+ < Ag+/Ag. As a result, the obtained PCSEs modified by LAMIs showed a sustained release rate of 17.7–19.7 mg (g−1 day−1) for the first 10 days and a slow release rate of 2.2–2.3 mg (g−1 day−1) within the next 30 days. According to actual TM usage conditions for some crops (1.0–2.0 mg m−2), only 0.50 g of TM-loaded PCSE can efficiently control the main pest of crops per square metre and can last for over 40 days.

High strength, anti-freezing and conductive silkworm excrement cellulose-based ionic hydrogel with physical-chemical double cross-linked for pressure sensing

Guangyuan Mu,Wenting He,Jia He,Yaseen Muhammad,Zhongfeng Shi,Bo Zhang,Liqin Zhou,Zhenxia Zhao,Zhongxing Zhao

Recently, ionic conductive hydrogels have attracted extensive attention in the field of flexible pressure sensors due to their mechanical flexibility and high conductivity. However, the trade-off between the high electrical and mechanical properties of ionic conductive hydrogels and the loss of mechanical and electrical properties of traditional high water content hydrogels at low temperature are still the main hurdles in this area. Herein, a rigid Ca-rich silkworm excrement cellulose (SEC Ca) extracted from silkworm breeding waste was prepared. SEC-Ca was combined with the flexible hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) molecules through hydrogen bonding and double ionic bonds of Zn 2+ and Ca 2+ to obtain the physical network SEC@HPMC-(Zn 2+ /Ca 2+ ). Then, the covalently cross-linked network of polyacrylamide (PAAM) and the physical network were cross-linked by hydrogen bonding to obtain the physical-chemical double cross-linked hydrogel (SEC@HPMC-(Zn 2+ /Ca 2+ )/PAAM). The hydrogel showed excellent compression properties (95 %, 4.08 MPa), high ionic conductivity (4.63 S/m at 25 °C) and excellent frost resistance (possessing ionic conductivity of 1.20 S/m at −70 °C). Notably, the hydrogel can monitor pressure changes in a wide temperature range (−60–25 °C) with high sensitivity, stability and durability. This newly fabricated hydrogel-based pressure sensors can be deemed of great prospects for large-scale application of pressure detection at ultra-low temperatures.
