Unique CO2 adsorption behavior of wild silk cocoons

Han Li,Yushan Li,Huailing Diao,Haipeng Ren,Jianming Chen,Jinfeng Wang,Qingtao Liu,Xungai Wang

Wild silk cocoons are light-weight composite structures with unique properties. One such property is the intriguing CO 2 gating property (i.e., unidirectional flow of CO 2 ) exhibited by the wild Antheraea pernyi ( A. pernyi ) silkworm cocoon. This study investigated the hierarchical structural and compositional features of A. pernyi cocoons and their impact on CO 2 adsorption. For the first time, soap-film flowmeter testing method and gas permeability testing method were used to quantitatively demonstrate the A. pernyi cocoons’ CO 2 adsorption property and selectivity for gas mixture. The results showed that the multi-layered composite structure of A. pernyi cocoons, coupled with calcium oxalate crystals, play a crucial role in their CO 2 adsorption and separation performance. These findings shed light on the unique functional design of wild silk cocoons and provide a new biomimetic approach for developing materials and structures to address global challenges such as CO 2 capture and storage.

Silkworm cocoon bionic design in wound dressings: A novel hydrogel with self-healing and antimicrobial properties

Dong Zhang,Lei Zhao,Xiaohu Cui,Xinpeng Li,Zhisong Qian,Xueyan Zhou,Zhongren Ma,Mohd Sobri Takriff,Zhiqiang Li,Ying Niu,Guilan Ma,Gongtao Ding,Zifan Wang

Hydrogels with rapid wound-healing capabilities and antimicrobial effects are gaining significant interest in related fields. Nonetheless, developing a multifunctional hydrogel wound dressing with injectable self-assembling, self-healing, antimicrobial properties, and efficient skin wound-healing capabilities remained a formidable challenge. In this experiment, we drew inspiration from silkworm cocoons' natural formation and protective mechanisms, employing a novel physical cross-linking method to create an injectable and self-healing quaternary hydrogel successfully. The hydrogel is based on a matrix of silk fibroin/silk sericin (SF/SS), with 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate sodium salt (DMPG) serving as a physical cross-linking agent to form the hydrogel network structure, and the incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) further enhances its antimicrobial capabilities. Our biomimetic hydrogel, which replicated the chemical properties of silkworm cocoons, demonstrated excellent hydrophilicity with a water contact angle that ranged from 37 to 52°. Its tensile and compressive resistance was approximately four times greater than that of a pure SF hydrogel, and its swelling performance was about three times higher than that of a pure SF hydrogel. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibited an impressive bacterial inhibition rate of over 98 % in bacterial growth and inhibition experiments, which provided a solid foundation for accelerating wound healing. Likewise, experiments with mice and histological analyses revealed that on day 7, the expression of TNF- α and IL-1 β in the wound tissues treated with the SF/SS/AgNPs hydrogel was significantly reduced by >25 % compared to the blank control group. This reduction indicates that the hydrogel could decrease the production of inflammatory cytokines, potentially aiding in the acceleration of wound healing and mitigation of inflammation-related adverse reactions. By day 14, the wounds were healed mainly, with the wound area reduced by 17 % compared to that of the blank group. This demonstrates the significant potential of this cocoon-mimetic hydrogel in accelerating wound healing and providing wound protection.

Silkworm cocoon derived N, O-codoped hierarchical porous carbon with ultrahigh specific surface area for efficient capture of methylene blue with exceptionally high uptake: kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics

Genxing Zhu,Qi Liu,Fengyi Cao,Qi Qin,Mingli Jiao

Dyes are typical water contaminants that seriously affect water quality. In this study, silkworm cocoon derived N, O-codoped hierarchical porous carbon was successively developed via a facile pre-carbonization and chemical activation method, and characterized thoroughly by SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XRD, Raman, N2 adsorption and XPS. The as-prepared N, O-HPC showed a well-developed porous structure with an ultra-high specific surface area of 2270.19 m2 g−1, which proved to be a high-efficiency adsorbent. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that MB adsorption was highly dependent on contact time, initial MB concentration, temperature and initial solution pH. However, no remarkable effects of humic acid and ionic strength were observed. In the kinetic studies, the good applicability of a pseudo-second-order kinetic model was demonstrated. The adsorption isotherm study showed that a Langmuir isotherm model can describe the experimental data much more suitably with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity value of 2104.29 mg g−1, which is among the highest in previously reported adsorbents and ascribed to multiple adsorption mechanisms including pore filling, π–π stacking interaction and electrostatic interaction between MB and N, O-HPC. Thermodynamic analyses suggested that MB adsorption onto N, O-HPC was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the as prepared adsorbent showed highly efficient adsorption for MB in tap water and synergistic adsorption performance toward MB and MO. Therefore, N, O-HPC derived from silkworm cocoon could be considered as an efficient, novel and advantageous material for wastewater remediation.

Silkworm cocoon-inspired and robust nanofibrous composite separator with gradient structure for lithium ion batteries

Jiayi Li,Lu Lu,Haibo Liang,Yan Sun,Xuesong Guo,Zhenzhen Wei,Yan Zhao

Considering electrospun nanofiber-based membranes that generally exhibit high porosity but poor mechanical property, there is a growing need to fabricate nanofibrous separators with comprehensive performance for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Silkworm cocoon, a source of design inspiration from nature, comprises a multilayer structure with composition change in the thickness direction, thereby endowing the cocoon with relatively high porosity and outstanding mechanical strength. Therefore, a silkworm cocoon-like structured nanofibrous separator (GPS) is fabricated in this work by initially preparing several polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous membranes with varied content of carboxyl styrene butadiene latex (SBR) and then laminating them in a concentration gradient sequence. Compared with the pristine PAN membrane, the GPS exhibits comparable porosity, thermal stability and electrolyte wettability due to the existence of PAN nanofibers, while the tensile strength and puncture resistance of the GPS are greatly raised by 5.5 times and 1.5 times, respectively. On account of the structure design, GPS also shows better mechanical strength than PAN/SBR separators without concentration gradient, and the strengthening mechanism has been verified by the finite element analysis. Meanwhile, such gradient structure of GPS renders the battery with desirable ion transport ability and stable cycle properties. Thus, the silkworm cocoon-like structured separator could be a promising separator candidate for LIBs, and the bioinspired design in structure will play an increasingly important role in the development of high-performance battery in the future.

Maximizing the benefits of combining fibroin and sericin: Functionalized obsoleted silk cocoon shell for purifying oily wastewater containing Pb2+

Yuanjing Ding,Junkai Gao,Zhongzhi Chen,Qian He,Mengsheng Xia,Pengtao Xu,Yan Cao,Yan Chen

Based on the durability of fibroin and the biocompatibility of sericin, researchers are exploring ways to maximize their advantages by combining them in the biomedical field . Fortunately, silk cocoon shell (SC) offers a natural composite material of fibroin and sericin. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of SC, the random arrangement connection of fibers, and the protection provided by the outer sericin limit its application in purifying oil wastewater. In this work, a cost-effective method was developed to improve the hydrophilicity of SC and the mechanical properties of SC by utilizing obsoleted SC as a matrix as well as by dissolving portions of sericin proteins. The polydopamine particle (PDP) was utilized as the intermediate modification layer and a supramolecular gel (SMG) was introduced to the surface of SC, further improving the surface's hydrophilicity of SC. The study indicated that SC@P-SMG has excellent mechanical properties, favorable anti-fouling properties, and superior self-cleaning ability. Furthermore, when the SC@P-SMG was applied in water purification , it could achieve multifunctional applications such as purifying wastewater containing emulsified oil and Pb 2+ ions, methylene blue (MB), and oil-water mixture separation. This work provided innovative ideas to maximize the benefits of combining fibroin and sericin.

Constructing hollow silkworm structure in MnOx–TiO2 catalysts for improving the performance in selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3

Xie Chong,Yang Shenghui,Shi Jian-Wen,Niu Chunming

A novel MnO x –TiO 2 catalyst with hollow silkworm structure was synthesized successfully via an ethanol-thermal strategy by using activated carbon fiber felt as template for the first time. The silkworm-like MnO x –TiO 2 catalyst (MnTi) exhibited higher NO x conversion in the whole experimental temperature region (90–330 °C) under a high space velocity of 36,000 h −1 in comparison with the common MnO x –TiO 2 catalyst without hollow silkworm structure (MnTi-B). The excellent catalytic performance of MnTi can be attributed to its high specific surface area, large content of active surface oxygen species (O S ), and more surface acid sites. In addition, the MnTi catalyst also exhibited excellent resistance to water or SO 2 poisoning.

A self-standing and self-floating 3D cavity evaporator for highly efficient desalination and wastewater treatment

Zhao Che,Xiao Yaoxin,Gu Ying,Wang Yazhuo,Lian Xixi,Liang Dong,Shan Rui,Yuan Haoran

Interfacial solar desalination has been widely considered as a promising technology for fresh water production because of its green, pollution-free and sustainable characteristics. Compared with the 2D solar evaporator, the 3D solar evaporator has a larger evaporation area. But traditional 3D evaporators could not utilize solar energy effectively due to its inefficient internal and peripheral spaces. Consequently, based on silk cocoon shell and its natural cavity structure, a 3D solar evaporator with internal and external double evaporation interface was designed and manufactured in this paper. The prepared evaporator had double evaporation surfaces which increased the actual evaporation area and the conversion efficiency of solar energy. Besides, the evaporator of Up-FSCE exhibited excellent thermal management performance, its evaporation rate reached 2.32 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 sun illumination. This study offers new insights into the structural design of 3D solar evaporators and further promotes the practical application of interfacial solar desalination.

A PLGA/Silk Fibroin Nanofibre Membrane Loaded with Natural Flavonoid Compounds Extracted from Green Cocoons for Wound Healing

Xiang Chen,Jiaqi Liu,Yaru Lu,Huijun Liu,Lan Cheng,Zhi Li,Fangyin Dai

The use of biodegradable materials combined with natural metabolites in wound dressings has received much attention. Flavonoids (FLs) from green cocoons, as metabolites, have antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other pharmacological effects. In this study, composite membranes of FL-loaded polylactic glycolic acid (PLGA)/silk fibroin (SF) were prepared by an electrospinning method. The prepared membranes, including SF, exhibited a good slow-release effect and cytocompatibility. An in vitro evaluation of the FL-loaded PLGA/SF membranes demonstrated good antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Animal experiments showed that the wound healing rate of PLGA/SF-2.5FL membranes within 15 days was 97.3%, and that of the control group was 72.5%. The PLGA/SF-2.5FL membranes shortened the inflammatory period of a full-layer wound model and promoted skin regeneration and wound healing by downregulating expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α and promoting expression of the growth factors VEGF, TGF-β, and EGF. In summary, the PLGA/SF-2.5FL composite nanofibre membrane with anti-inflammatory properties is an ideal wound dressing to promote acute wound healing.

Integrated construction of silkworm cocoon-inspired 3D scaffold for improving cell manufacture and cryopreservation

Jianmei Chen,Yurui Xu,Xinghai Ning

Although cellular therapy holds enormous promise in treating intractable diseases, its application potential has been significantly hampered due to the scarcity of reliable and consistent cell sources. Therefore, a high-efficiency strategy that improves cell production and storage is desperately needed. Herein, we develop a versatile 3D bioinspired scaffold (Cryosilk) for improving scalable cell manufacture and cryopreservation. A bottom-up fabrication technique integrating electrospinning, in situ surface functionalization and freeze-shaping was explored to construct Cryosilk with biomimetic features and functions of silkworm cocoons. Cryosilk is composed of a core-shell heterostructure with silk fibroin/poly alanine fiber core and silk sericin shell, generating a 3D cocoon-mimicking fibrous structure. Importantly, Cryosilk possesses improved thermal conductivity and ice crystal resistance capability, thus enabling to cryopreserve biological samples with minimal cryodamage. Furthermore, Cryosilk not only promotes cell adhesion and growth, but achieves rapid and uniform rewarming process, which provides high cryopreservation efficacy for immune cells and stem cells. Particularly, Cryosilk can maintain cell viability and biofunctions of stem cell-scaffold constructs after freeze-thawing, which can be directly implanted to promote wound healing. Thus, Cryosilk offers unprecedented efficacy in cell manufacture and cryopreservation, which provides sufficient and high-quality precious cells and tissue engineered scaffolds for cellular therapy.

Dual-Dielectric-Layer-Based Iontronic Pressure Sensor Coupling Ultrahigh Sensitivity and Wide-Range Detection for Temperature/Pressure Dual-Mode Sensing

Jianyu Pu,Yuantao Zhang,Huiming Ning,Yuanhao Tian,Chenxing Xiang,Hui Zhao,Yafeng Liu,Alamusi Lee,Xinglong Gong,Ning Hu,Tonghua Zhang,Shu Wang

Iontronic pressure sensors are widely used in human motion monitoring and human–machine interactions owing to their high sensitivity, wide measurement range, and excellent resolution. However, conventional dielectric layer designs often involve complex fabrication processes, high costs, and limited performances. This paper proposes a novel sensor structure, the dual-dielectric-layer iontronic pressure sensor (DLIPS), which integrates high- and low-permittivity layers. Validated using silkworm cocoon ion gel and open-cell polyurethane foam as dielectrics, the DLIPS exhibited ultrahigh sensitivity (72548.7 kPa −1 ), a wide working pressure range (0.001–420 kPa), an exceptionally low detection limit (0.832 Pa), and remarkable durability exceeding 5000 cycles. By leveraging the distinct responses of the capacitance and resistance to pressure and temperature, the sensor can simultaneously measure both parameters. A deep learning regression model is integrated to decouple the mixed temperature and pressure signals, enabling accurate identification. Owing to its ultrahigh sensitivity and capability to detect minute pressure fluctuations, the DLIPS exhibited strong potential for skin-mounted silent speech recognition systems, achieving a recognition accuracy of up to 98.5%. Furthermore, the DLIPS provides a cost-effective and scalable approach for fabricating ultrahigh-sensitivity pressure sensors, underscoring its versatility in wearable technology applications.
