The aim of this study is to enhance the classification performance of the back-propagation-artificial neural network (BP-ANN) algorithm for NaCl, NaOH, β-phenylethylamine (PEA), and their mixture, as well as to avoid the defects of the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm such as prematurity and local optimization. In this paper, a method that combined an improved adaptive artificial bee colony (IAABC) algorithm and BP-ANN algorithm was proposed. This method improved the ABC algorithm by adding an adaptive local search factor and mutation factor; meanwhile, it can enhance the abilities of the global optimization and local search of the ABC algorithm and avoid prematurity. The extracted score vectors of the principal component of the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum were used as the input variable of the BP-ANN algorithm. The IAABC algorithm was used to optimize the weight and threshold of the BP-ANN algorithm, and the iterative algorithm was repeated until the output accuracy was reached. The output variable was the classification results of NaCl, NaOH, PEA, and the mixture. Meanwhile, the proposed IAABC-BP-ANN algorithm was compared with discriminant analysis (DA), sigmaid-support vector machine (SVM), radial basis function-SVM (RBF-SVM), BP-ANN, and ABC-BP-ANN. Then, the above algorithms were used to classify NaCl, NaOH, PEA, and the mixture, respectively. In the experiment, four indicators, accuracy, recall, precision, and F-score, were used as the evaluation criteria. In addition, the regression equation parameters of the mixture for the testing set were obtained by BP-ANN, ABC-BP-ANN, and IAABC-BP-ANN models. All of the results showed that IAABC-BP-ANN exhibits better performance than other algorithms. Therefore, IAABC-BP-ANN combined with UV spectroscopy is a potential identification tool for the detection of NaCl, NaOH, PEA, and the mixture.

Aethina tumida (small hive beetle, SHB) is a rapidly spreading invasive parasite of bee colonies. The olfactory system plays a key role in insect behavior, and odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are involved in the first step of the olfactory signal transduction pathway and the detection of host volatiles. However, the olfactory mechanism of OBPs in SHB-localized bee colonies is unclear. In this study, electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioral bioassay showed that only three compounds (2-heptanone, ocimene, and ethyl palmitate) from bee colonies triggered high electrophysiological and behavioral responses. Three antenna-specific OBP genes ( OBP6 , OBP11 , and OBP19 ) were identified, and they were significantly expressed on adult days 6–7. Furthermore, by combining RNA interference (RNAi) with EAG, olfactometer bioassay, competitive fluorescence binding assays, and molecular docking, we found that these three OBP genes were involved in the recognition of 2-heptanone and ethyl palmitate, and AtumOBP6 is also involved in the recognition of ocimene. These data indicate that AtumOBP6, AtumOBP11, and AtumOBP19 play an important role in the olfactory response to bee colony volatiles. Our results provide new insights into the functions of the OBP families in A. tumida and help to explore more potential target genes for environmentally friendly pest control strategies.

Multisensory fusion allow artificial neurons to capture and process abundant signals for perceptual enhancement. Apart from the extensively studied visual-tactile fusion, reports on visual-humid perception remains a challenge, which plays a crucial role for living organism in activities such as foraging, weather detection and locating water source. Here we demonstrate a bee-inspired multisensory spiking neuron (MSN) that comprise a capacitive humidity synapse, a resistive photodetector and a threshold- switching memristor. The MSN encodes visual and humidity inputs into a sequence of spike events, mimicking the quintessential function of a bio-neuron, including action potential, threshold-driven spiking, refractory period, and intensity-modulated spike- frequency. The fused spikes can distinguish between humidity and visual signals by decoupling the output frequencies and amplitudes. Simulation results depict that the cross-modal sensing approach achieves a heightened accuracy (96.67%) in object recognition for verifying flower authenticity. This research opens up a new avenue for constructing humid-visual spiking neurons to advance multisensory perception and intelligent recognition capabilities.

Two trypanosomatid species, Lotmaria passim and Crithidia mellificae, have been shown to parasitize honey bees to date. L. passim appears to be more prevalent than C. mellificae and specifically infects the honey bee hindgut. Although the genomic DNA has been sequenced, the effects of infection on honey bee health and colony are poorly understood. To identify the genes that are important for infecting honey bees and to understand their functions, we applied the CRISPR/Cas9 system to establish a method to manipulate L. passim genes. By electroporation of plasmid DNA and subsequent selection by drug, we first established an L. passim clone expressing tdTomato or Cas9. We also successfully disrupted the endogenous miltefosine transporter and tyrosine aminotransferase genes by replacement with drug (hygromycin) resistant gene using the CRISPR/Cas9-induced homology-directed repair pathway. The L. passim clone expressing fluorescent marker, as well as the simple method for editing specific genes, could become useful approaches to understand the underlying mechanisms of honey bee-trypanosomatid parasite interactions.

Behavioral division is essential for the sustainability and reproduction of honeybee populations. While accumulating evidence has documented that antibiotic exposure interferes with bee behavioral divisions, how the gut microbiome, host physiology, and genetic regulation are implicated in this process remains understudied. Here, by constructing single-cohort colonies, we validated that the gut microbiota varied in composition between age-matched nurse and forager bees. Perturbing the gut microbiota with a low dose of antibiotic retained the gut bacterial size, but the structure of the microbial community continuously diverged from the control group after antibiotic treatment. Fewer foragers were observed in the antibiotic groups in the field experiment. A combinatorial effect of decreased gut metabolic gene repertoires, reduced brain neurotransmitter titers, and downregulated brain immune genes could potentially be related to behavioral tasks transition delay. This work indicates that the disturbance to both the gut microbiome and host physiologies after antibiotic exposure may have implications on social behavior development, highlighting the need for further research focusing on antibiotic pollution threatening the honeybee population's health.
