Pollinators such as bees provide a critical ecosystem service that can be impaired by information about predation. We provide the first evidence for olfactory eavesdropping and avoidance of heterospecific alarm signals, alarm pheromones, at food sources in bees. We predicted that foragers could eavesdrop upon heterospecific alarm pheromones, and would detect and avoid conspicuous individual pheromone compounds, defined by abundance and their ability to persist. We show that Apis cerana foragers avoid the distinctive alarm pheromones of A. dorsata and A. mellifera , species that share the same floral resources and predators. We next examined responses to individual alarm pheromone compounds. Apis cerana foragers avoided isopentyl acetate (IPA), which is found in all three species and is the most abundant and volatile of the tested compounds. Interestingly, A. cerana also avoided an odor component, gamma-octanoic lactone (GOL), which is >150-fold less volatile than IPA. Chemical analyses confirmed that GOL is only present in A. dorsata , not in A. cerana. Electroantennogram (EAG) recordings revealed that A. cerana antennae are 10-fold more sensitive to GOL than to other tested compounds. Thus, the eavesdropping strategy is shaped by signal conspicuousness (abundance and commonality) and signal persistence (volatility).

Honeybee pollination behavior is influenced by flower volatiles, which honeybees sense via olfactory receptors . Honeybees are only weakly attracted to pear flowers. To investigate the potential reasons, we extracted and determined the floral volatile compounds from three pear cultivars (Su, Ya, and Xuehua) using headspace solid-phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The effects of pear flower volatiles on the Asian honeybee ( Apis cerana cerana Fabricius) and the European honeybee ( Apis mellifera ligustica Spinola) were determined by electroantennogram (EAG) assays and behavioral tests in a three-arm olfactometer . Among the 76 flower volatiles detected with GC–MS, 21 were found in all three pear cultivars, accounting for approximately 70% of the total volatile content. 3-Methyl-1-butanol and (+)-limonene volatiles had the highest relative content. Five compounds elicited strong EAG responses in both bee species: 2-methylbutyraldehyde, 1-nonanal, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and (+)-limonene. Neither bee species showed positive taxis to these volatiles. In behavioral tests, A. mellifera ligustica showed a low preference for 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (20%, 400 µg/µL) and 2-phenethyl alcohol (16.7%, 400 µg/µL). Apis cerana cerana showed a low preference for 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (6.7%, 400 µg/µL) and 1-nonanal (10%, 400 µg/µL), whereas its preferences for 3-methyl-1-butanol (43.3%, 400 µg/µL) and α-farnesene (40%, 400 µg/µL) were similar to that for the control. Therefore, a lack of attractive volatile compounds could explain why honeybees are only weakly attracted to pear flowers. Therefore, to achieve acceptable pollination in pear orchards, we suggest using flower-scent sugar syrup feeding and a saturation pollination strategy.

The thunder god vine , Tripterygium hypoglaucum, is a toxic nectar plant distributed across China. A terpenoid, called triptolide (TRP), found in nectar can impair honeybees’ foraging responses, dance communication, and olfactory learning. In the present study, we tested the tolerances of the native honeybee Apis cerana and the introduced honeybee A. mellifera to short-term and long-term exposure to TRP. The results showed that introduced A. mellifera is more vulnerable in fatality to high concentrations of TRP sucrose solution (5 and 10 µg TRP mL −1 ) than A. cerana . We also compared the short-term and long-term exposure effects of TRP on olfactory learning and memory between the two honeybee species, and the olfactory learning and memory of both honey bee species showed impaired performance after both 2 h or 7 days of being fed with TRP sucrose solution. However, A. cerana showed a higher tolerance and resistance to TRP toxin than A. mellifera. Our results support a coevolution hypothesis in that the native species A. cerana has higher toxin tolerance than the introduced species A. mellifera .

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section Predatory threats, even when they do not involve direct consumption (non-consumptive effects, NCEs), can profoundly influence the physiology and behaviour of prey. For example, honeybees that encounter hornet predators show responses similar to fear. However, the physiological mechanisms that are connected with this fear-like response and their effects on bee cognition and olfaction remain largely unknown. We show that bees decreased time spent near the hornet, demonstrated fearful behaviour and moved with greater velocity to escape. After a prolonged 24-h exposure, bees adopted defensive clustering, displayed greater predator avoidance, and experienced a decline in brain dopamine levels. Prolonged predator exposure also diminished bee olfactory sensitivity to odours and their mechanical sensitivity to air currents, contributing to impaired olfactory learning. However, boosting brain dopamine reversed one fear-like behaviour (average bee velocity in the presence of a hornet) and rescued olfactory sensitivity and learning. We therefore provide evidence linking dopamine to sensory and cognitive declines associated with fear in an insect. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 即便对猎物不构成直接捕杀(非消耗性捕食效应),捕食者也可以对猎物的生理和行为造成严重的影响。

Thrips [ Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall)] (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a pest that poses a serious challenge to global crop production and food supply, especially to the cowpea industry. Nano-delivery systems have broad application prospects in the prevention and control of pests in agriculture. Herein, three types of amino acid (AA) modified polysuccinimide nano-delivery carriers (PSI-GABA, PSI-ASP and PSI-GLU) were constructed with a diameter of approximately 150 nm to load thiamethoxam (THX), which enhanced THX effective distribution and use with cowpea plants. Significantly, the PSI-GLU nanocarrier effectively delivered THX to cowpea plant tissues following 6 h of soil application. Compared with commercial THX suspension (SC), the THX content in the leaves of cowpea plants was increased by 2.3 times. Confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed that the FITC-labeled PSI-GLU nanocarrier reached the leaves through the vascular system after being absorbed by the roots of cowpea plants. The PSI-GLU nanocarrier decreased the LC 50 of THX from 11.45 to 7.79 mg/L and significantly enhanced the insecticidal effect. The PSI-GLU nanocarrier also improved the safety of THX to worker bees at 48 h, and moreover showed a growth-promoting effect on cowpea seedlings. These results demonstrated that the PSI-GLU nano-delivery carrier has promising uses on improving the effective utilization of THX for the sustainable control of thrips and reducing the risk to non-target pollutions.

Tropilaelaps mercedesae is not only a major threat to honey bees in Asia but also a potential risk to global apiculture due to trade. Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide that negatively affects individual bees. Moreover, the health of honey bees may be threatened by imidacloprid exposure and T. mercedesae infestation. We studied the effects of T. mercedesae and imidacloprid on the survival, food consumption and midgut bacterial diversity of Apis mellifera in the laboratory . Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to determine the bacterial composition in the honey bee midgut. T. mercedesae decreased survival in parasitized honey bees compared with nonparasitized honey bees, but there was no significant difference in food consumption. The imidacloprid 50 μg/L diet significantly decreased syrup consumption of A. mellifera compared with the control diet. The combination of T. mercedesae infestation and imidacloprid 50 μg/L exposure reduced survival and increased pollen consumption of A. mellifera . T. mercedesae infestation or a combination of T. mercedesae infestation and exposure to 25 μg/L imidacloprid affected the midgut bacterial composition of honey bees. T. mercedesae infestation and imidacloprid exposure may reduce the survival and affect honey bee health.

Effects of glyphosate on survival, developmental rate, larval weight, and midgut bacterial diversity of Apis mellifera were tested in the laboratory. Larvae were reared in vitro and fed diet containing glyphosate 0.8, 4, and 20 mg/L. The dependent variables were compared with negative control and positive control (dimethoate 45 mg/L). Brood survival decreased in 4 or 20 mg/L glyphosate treatments but not in 0.8 mg/L, and larval weight decreased in 0.8 or 4 mg/L glyphosate treatments. Exposure to three concentrations did not affect the developmental rate. Furthermore, the intestinal bacterial communities were determined using high-throughput sequencing targeting the V3–V4 regions of the 16S rDNA. All core honey bee intestinal bacterial phyla such as Proteobacteria (30.86%), Firmicutes (13.82%), and Actinobacteria (11.88%) were detected, and significant changes were found in the species diversity and richness in 20 mg/L glyphosate group. Our results suggest that high concentrations of glyphosate are deleterious to immature bees.

The Asian hive bee Apis cerana has similar queen mandibular pheromones (QMP) to the Western honey bee Apis mellifera . However the effects of individual QMP components have never been tested to determine their effects on the reproductive physiology of A. cerana workers. We fed one queen equivalent of each of the major components of A. cerana QMP to groups of c.a. 500 day-old, caged, workers twice a day until the workers were 10 days old. Half of the cages were also provided with 10% royal jelly in the food. Workers were sampled each day and dissected to determine the number of ovarioles and the degree of ovary activation (egg development). In cages treated with 9-carbon fatty acids ovary activation was minimal, whereas the 10-carbon acids suppressed ovary activation very little. Royal jelly enhanced ovary activation, especially in cages treated with 10-carbon acids. The number of ovarioles declined with bee age, but the rate of decline was slowed by the 9-carbon acids in particular. The results show conservation of the composition and function of QMP between A. cerana and A. mellifera and support the hypothesis that QMP is an honest signal of queen fecundity rather than a chemical castrator of workers.

In Southeast Asia the native honey bee species Apis cerana is often attacked by hornets ( Vespa velutina ), mainly in the period from April to November. During the co-evolution of these two species honey bees have developed several strategies to defend themselves such as learning the odors of hornets and releasing alarm components to inform other mates. However, so far little is known about whether and how honey bees modulate their olfactory learning in the presence of the hornet predator and alarm components of honey bee itself. In the present study, we test for associative olfactory learning of A . cerana in the presence of predator odors, the alarm pheromone component isopentyl acetate (IPA), or a floral odor (hexanal) as a control. The results show that bees can detect live hornet odors, that there is almost no association between the innately aversive hornet odor and the appetitive stimulus sucrose, and that IPA is less well associated with an appetitive stimulus when compared with a floral odor. In order to imitate natural conditions, e.g. when bees are foraging on flowers and a predator shows up, or alarm pheromone is released by a captured mate, we tested combinations of the hornet odor and floral odor, or IPA and floral odor. Both of these combinations led to reduced learning scores. This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the prey-predator system between A . cerana and V . velutina .

Honeybee olfaction can influence foraging behavior and affect crop pollination. Odor-binding proteins play a vital role in honeybee olfactory perception. A previous study based on the antennal transcriptome ofApis mellifera ligusticain melon and tomato greenhouses revealed thatAmelOBP2is highly expressed. Therefore, we aimed to further investigate the olfactory recognition mechanism of honeybees by detecting the expression levels and binding ability of AmelOBP2 to floral volatiles of melon and tomato flowers. The results show thatAmelOBP2mRNA was highly expressed in the antennae of honeybees, and its protein expression was highest in the antennae at 20 days of age and was higher in the melon greenhouse. The binding ability of AmelOBP2 to floral volatiles of melon was stronger than that of tomato. AmelOBP2 had a stronger binding ability with aldehydes in melon floral volatiles and with terpenes and benzenes in tomato floral volatiles. After feeding with siRNA, the electroantennogram response of honeybees to E-2-hexenal, E-2-octenal, and 1-nonanal decreased markedly, confirming the role of AmelOBP2 in the recognition of melon and tomato floral volatiles. These results elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying honeybee flower-visiting behavior and provide a theoretical reference for regulating the behavior of honeybees using plant volatiles.

We investigated the occurrence of 80 pesticide residues in 96 honey samples from apiaries with honeybee poisoning incidences by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry and subsequently conducted risk assessments of exposure for in-hive honeybees and Chinese consumers. Six pesticides were detected with residue concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 130.9 µg/kg. The mean concentrations of acetamiprid, dinotefuran, hexythiazox, propargite, semiamitraz, and carbendazim in positive samples were 7.9 ± 9.1, 5.9 ± 1.7, 3.0 ± 1.6, 44.2 ± 50.0, 9.0 ± 9.4, and 5.5 ± 4.1 µg/kg, respectively. Carbendazim, semiamitraz, and acetamiprid were the major contaminants in honey, with incidences of 99.0%, 93.8%, and 49.0%, respectively. The cooccurrence of pesticides (≥2 pesticides) was detected in 95.9% of the samples, with up to six residual pesticides found in one sample. The HQ (hazard quotient) values of the six pesticides to in-hive honeybees were from 4.7 × 10 −8 to 0.021, less than 1, indicating their acceptable exposure risk to honeybees. In terms of the representative-case and worst-case scenarios, the sum of separate HQs of each pesticide yielding an HI (hazard index) ranged from 0.012 to 0.016 for in-hive worker honeybees and from 0.015 to 0.021 for in-hive larva honeybees, indicating an overall acceptable potential cumulative risk of multiple pesticides to in-hive honeybees. Both the %ARfD (acute reference dose) value (0.0001–0.075) and %ADI (acceptable daily intake) value (0.00002–0.0046) of risky pesticides were much less than 100, revealing acceptable risk exposure to risky pesticides via honey consumption for human health. Thus, our results showed that multipesticide residual honey from apiaries with honeybee poisoning incidents in East China was safe for humans and in-hive honeybees. Practical Application This analytical approach will be used in detecting multiple pesticide residues in honey and risk assessment for dietary exposure to pesticide residues. It can support various surveillance programs about honey safety and in-hive honeybee health evaluation.

The widespread use of pesticides poses a significant threat to honeybee health by impacting their survival, behavior, immune function, and detoxification capacity. While phytochemicals such as resveratrol (RSV) have shown potential in mitigating oxidative stress and enhancing antioxidant defenses, their role in improving honeybee tolerance to pesticide exposure remains underexplored. In this study, we investigated the effects of RSV supplementation on honeybees exposed to three pesticides: dinotefuran (DIN), tebuconazole (TEB), and deltamethrin (DEL). The results showed that RSV supplementation significantly improved survival, feed intake, mobility, and gustatory sensitivity, indicating its protective effects against pesticide toxicity. Furthermore, RSV helped normalize impaired detoxification enzyme activities, including SOD, POD, catalase, and glutathione reductase, and reduced ROS levels and lipid peroxidation. Gene expression analysis revealed that RSV modulates Toll pathway-related genes like defensin and apidaecin , alleviating immune suppression caused by pesticides. Additionally, RSV influenced the insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling (IIS) pathway by reducing ilp1 and inr1 expression, potentially mitigating metabolic stress. These findings demonstrate that protective effects of RSV may be linked to its ability to counter oxidative stress, restore mitochondrial function, and enhance energy metabolism. Furthermore, RSV is widely available, cost-effective, and easily incorporated into bee feed, making it feasible for large-scale application. This study highlights the protective role of RSV in pesticide detoxification in honeybees, offering new perspectives for honeybee health management and environmental toxicology research. By reducing the adverse effects of pesticides on honeybees, the application of RSV not only contributes to maintaining ecological balance but also supports sustainable agricultural practices. Future research should focus on optimizing its dosage, evaluating long-term effects, and investigating its impact on colony dynamics to facilitate its practical implementation in apiculture.
