Graphene-Ag nanoparticles-cicada wings hybrid system for obvious SERS performance and DNA molecular detection

Wen Yang,Zhen Li,Zhengyi Lu,Jing Yu,Yanyan Huo,Baoyuan Man,Jie Pan,Haipeng Si,Shouzhen Jiang,Chao Zhang

In recent years, biomaterials have increasingly attracted attention on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) due to their well Raman performance while metal particles are combined with biological substrates. Therefore, we propose an environmentally friendly substrate based on silver-plated cicada wings with seamless graphene layer (Gr-AgNPs-C.w.), which can be prepared with a simple and inexpensive method. Compared with AgNPs-C.w., Gr-AgNPs-C.w. hybrids show better SERS performance with high sensitivity, good uniformity and good stability with R6G detection. The minimum detected concentration can reach 10−15 M, and the value of R2 can reach 0.996, respectively. Theoretical simulation demonstrates the situation of electromagnetic field through COMSOL software. In addition, due to the affinity of graphene for biomolecules, we can successfully detect the DNA biomolecules through a simple process. Therefore, this cheap and efficient natural SERS substrate has great potential for a considerable number of biochemical SERS applications and can broaden the way in which multiple SERS platforms derived from other natural materials are prepared.

Silver nanoparticles modified on cicada wings affect fluorescence and Raman signals based on electromagnetic and chemical enhancement mechanisms

Shu Guo,Huiju Cao,Yunfan Yang,Mingli Wang

The electromagnetic enhancement (EM) mechanism is one of the important theories that need to be mastered to study surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). However, the charge transfer in the chemical enhancement (CM) mechanism has different effects on the two. The study developed a simple and environmentally friendly composite structural substrate by depositing silver (Ag) on the rough surface with regular columnar protuberances of bio-material cicada wings (CW) using magnetron sputtering technology. The formation of Ag nano-islands enhanced the fluorescence and Raman signals of rhodamine 6G (R6G), while the addition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) quenched the fluorescence. To explore the magical phenomenon, the electromagnetic field distribution on the surface of the substrate was simulated through three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD), which verified the experimental results of SEF and SERS. The results calculated by Gaussian16 with Density Functional Theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) explained the effect of adding AgNPs on the surface of the substrate on the fluorescence intensity. The work not only contributes experimental data and theoretical results to the EM mechanism and CM mechanism in enhanced spectra, but also provides ideas for preparing new SEF and SERS substrates.

A flexible and stable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on Au nanoparticles/Graphene oxide/Cicada wing array

Guochao Shi,Mingli Wang,Yanying Zhu,Lin Shen,Yuhong Wang,Wanli Ma,Yuee Chen,Ruifeng Li

In this work, we presented an eco-friendly and low-cost method to fabricate a kind of flexible and stable Au nanoparticles/graphene oxide/cicada wing (AuNPs/GO/CW) substrate. By controlling the ratio of reactants, the optimum SERS substrate with average AuNPs size of 65 nm was obtained. The Raman enhancement factor for rhodamine 6G (R6G) was 1.08 × 10 6 and the limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 10 −8 M. After calibrating the Raman peak intensities of R6G, it could be quantitatively detected. In order to better understand the experimental results, the 3D finite-different time-domain simulation was used to simulate the AuNPs/GO/CW-1 (the diameter of the AuNPs was 65 nm) to further investigate the SERS enhancement effect. More importantly, the AuNPs/GO/CW-1 substrates not only can provide strong enhancement factors but also can be stable and reproducible. This SERS substrates owned a good stability for the SERS intensity which was reduced only by 25% after the aging time of 60 days and the relative standard deviation was lower than 20%, revealing excellent uniformity and reproducibility. Our positive findings can pave a new way to optimize the application of SERS substrate as well as provide more SERS platforms for quantitative detection of organic contaminants vestige, which makes it very promising in the trace detection of biological molecules.

Cicada wing-inspired solar transmittance enhancement and hydrophobicity design for graphene-based solar steam generation: A novel gas phase deposition approach

Wei Cai,Ying Pan,Xiaming Feng,Xiaowei Mu,Weizhao Hu,Lei Song,Xin Wang,Yuan Hu

The severe light reflection phenomenon has become a critical challenge for the sufficient utilization of solar energy. For preventing the predation risk, cicada’s wings are gradually evolved into transparent morphology to preferably blend into the natural environment. The high solar transmittance in cicada wings is due to the presence of surface micro/nanostructures which avoids the large change of refractive index between air and wings. Herein, inspired by the high solar transmittance of cicada’s wings, an extremely-simple gaseous phase deposition with low heating temperature is developed to cover graphene film with methyl-modified silicon dioxide (CH 3 -SiO 2 ) nanospheres that decelerate the refractive index reduction. The destructive interference effect of CH 3 -SiO 2 nanospheres effectively increases the solar transmittance to promote the absorption and conversion of solar energy into heat by graphene nanosheets. As a result, compared to pure graphene film, CH 3 -SiO 2 nanospheres covered graphene (SiO 2 -graphene) film presents a temperature increase of ∼6.3 °C with solar illumination of 1.0 kW/m 2 . After being combined with zwitterion-modified cotton fabric, a novel solar steam generation system mainly composed of SiO 2 -graphene film is prepared. Due to the hydrophobicity of CH 3 -SiO 2 nanosphere and the hydration effect of zwitterionic polymer, the salt precipitation and oil fouling problems regarded as major challenges in solar desalination are simultaneously solved, thus achieving water evaporation rate near 1.40 kg/m 2 h at oily seawater environment. Most importantly, the solar transmittance enhancement and anti-reflection design inspired by cicada wings provide a valuable reference to promote the solar absorption capacity of other photo-thermal conversion materials.

Comparison of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effectiveness of Au nanoparticles/cicada wing substrates prepared by different methods

Guochao Shi,Yanying Zhu,Mingli Wang,Lin Shen,Yuee Chen,Yuhong Wang,Xiaona Xu,Ruifeng Li,Wanli Ma

Two different types of Au nanoparticles (Au)/cicada wing (CW) arrays were synthesized by chemical reduction impregnation method and magnetron sputtering technique, respectively. And three-dimensional (3D) Au/CW-c (prepared by chemical reduction impregnation method) arrays and Au/CW-m (prepared by DC magnetron sputtering system) substrate were used as active substrates for SERS . The morphologies and Raman signals of the synthesized Au/CW-c and Au/CW-m substrates were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Raman system. Characterizations of the synthesized Au/CW-c and Au/CW-m substrates exhibited outstanding SERS properties. By comparing the enhanced Raman signal of Rhodamine 6G (R6G), it was found that the Au/CW-m substrate was more sensitive than Au/CW-c substrate. The results showed that the limit of detection (LOD) for R6G was as low as 10 −8   M for the Au/CW-m substrate. The enhancement factors (EF) were calculated to be 5.09   ×   10 4 for the Au/CW-c substrate and 1.12   ×   10 6 for the Au/CW-m substrate. This phenomenon is due to the fact that the high-dense SERS “hot spots” where the collective resonance of the absorbed electrons enhances contribute to the high SERS enhancement of Au/CW-m substrate. What we have found provides a promising approach to the rapid and sensitive detection of trace of organic pollutants.
