Highly Porous Carbon Materials Based on Cicada Slough for Outstanding Supercapacitor Performance

Zhang Yaning,Zeng Fanen,Pang Jiaxi,Zhang Jian,Xu Bing

The development of fast charging and discharging energy storage devices that are environmentally friendly has become the key to addressing both the issue of diminishing energy sources and the increasing demand for energy storage for societal development. Cicada slough (CS)-based porous carbon (CSC) with microporous and mesoporous coexistence was prepared using CS as a precursor material and KOH as an activator, which was activated at high temperature. The materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N 2 adsorption–desorption test, and the electrochemical properties were tested under two-electrode and three-electrode setups, respectively. The synthesized CSC material grew in oxygen content, resulting in a specific surface area of 1013.49 m 2 g −1 and an average pore size of 2.17 nm. Furthermore, this porous carbon material had rich pore structures and good electrical conductivity. Three-electrode tests were performed in a 6 M KOH electrolyte, and the materials presented a specific capacitance of 127.2 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , with a capacitance retention of 82.54% when the current density was increased to 5 A g −1 . The symmetric supercapacitor was fabricated using two pieces loaded with the same mass of CSC and 6 M KOH electrolyte, and achieved an energy density of 10.85 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 500 W kg −1 , and the specific capacitance retention was 100% after 10,000 cycles at 5 A g −1 .

Construction of AgNPs-loaded oriented hydrogel based on Periostracum Cicadae chitosan by electro-assembly for rapid hemostasis and wound healing

Yujie Lei,Shilei Wang,Qian Liu,Duan Zeng,Kexing Wang,Cong Chang,Baohui Zhang,Lin Zhang,Zhaohua Shi,Yan Meng

Oriented hydrogels have been recognized for their ability to promote cell proliferation and enhance wound repair. Chitosan, valued for its biocompatibility and biodegradability, is widely used in hydrogel preparation. However, chitosan derived from Periostracum Cicadae (“Chantui”) has not been explored for creating antibacterial-oriented hydrogels. In this study, we successfully developed a Periostracum Cicadae chitosan-based oriented hydrogel (O-CH) using an electro-assembly method. The O-CH hydrogel exhibited superior hemostatic performance and mechanical strength, with stress levels 7.6 times higher than those of traditional alkali-neutralized hydrogels. Subsequently, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were formed in situ on the O-CH hydrogel without the need for additional reducing agents or stabilizers, yielding O-CH@Ag20, which exhibited excellent biocompatibility and enhanced antibacterial properties. In an S. aureus -infected full-thickness rat skin defect model, O-CH@Ag20 reduced bacterial counts at the wound site by 6-fold compared to the gauze group on day 3 and achieved a 97 % wound healing rate by day 10, versus 75 % in the gauze group. Histological analysis revealed that O-CH@Ag20 regulated angiogenesis, collagen deposition, and fibroblast differentiation into myofibroblasts, thereby accelerating wound contraction during remodeling. This study presents a novel approach to addressing clinical challenges in infected wound healing using Periostracum Cicadae chitosan-based antibacterial hydrogels.

Integrating Multi-Type Component Determination and Anti-Oxidant/-Inflammatory Assay to Evaluate the Impact of Pre-Molting Washing on the Quality and Bioactivity of Cicadae Periostracum

Meng-Fei Guo,Huan-Huan Zhang,Ping Zhong,Jin-Di Xu,Shan-Shan Zhou,Fang Long,Ming Kong,Qian Mao,Song-Lin Li

Cicadae Periostracum (CP) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the slough that is molted from the nymph of the insectCryptotympana pustulataFabricius. Washing with water to remove residual silt is a primary processing method of CP that is recommended by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, but how washing methods affect the quality and bioactivity of CP is unknown. In this study, the quality and bioactivity of non-washed CP (CP-NW), post-molting-washed CP (CP-WAT), and pre-molting-washed CP (CP-WBT) were comparatively investigated. The quality of these CP samples was evaluated in terms of the UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS-based chemical profiling and semi-quantification of 39N-acetyldopamine oligomers (belonging to six chemical types), the HPLC-UV-based quantification of 17 amino acids, the ICP-MS-based quantification of four heavy metals, and the contents of ash; the bioactivities of the samples were compared regarding their anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. It was found that, compared with CP-NW, both CP-WBT and CP-WAT had significantly lower contents of ash and heavy metals. Moreover, compared with CP-WAT, CP-WBT contained lower levels of total ash, acid-insoluble ash, and heavy metals and higher contents ofN-acetyldopamine oligomers and amino acids. It also had enhanced anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. A Spearman’s correlation analysis found that the contents ofN-acetyldopamine oligomers and free amino acids were positively correlated with the anti-oxidant/-inflammatory activities of CP. All these results suggest that pre-molting washing can not only remove the residual silt but can also avoid the loss of the bioactive components and assure higher bioactivities. It is concluded that pre-molting washing could enhance the quality and bioactivity of CP and should be a superior alternative method for the primary processing of qualified CP.Keywords:Cicadae Periostracum;primary processing;pre/post-molting washing;quality;bioactivity

Chemical profile of Xian-He-Cao-Chang-Yan formula and its effects on ulcerative colitis

Jun Li,Ming Li,Ke Ye,Qixin Jiang,Mi Wang,Xiaodong Wen,Jie Yang

Ethnopharmacological relevance Xian-He-Cao-Chang-Yan formula (XHCF) is consisting of six crude drugs including Agrimoniae Herba, Coptidis Rhizoma , Aucklandiae Radix, Cicadae Periostracum, Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, and Platycodonis Radix at the ratio of 5:1.5:1.5:1.5:1.5:1. It has been used to improve syndromes of ulcerative colitis (UC) for many years. Aim of the study This study was designed to study the bioactive ingredients and therapeutic mechanisms of XHCF. Materials and methods The chemical profile of XHCF was characterized by UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS. The effects and mechanisms of XHCF on UC were investigated in colitis mice induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Results A total of 103 compounds were characterized in XHCF. XHCF could effectively improve acute colitis induced by DSS. More importantly, XHCF significantly decreased M1 macrophage markers (CD11c, IL-6 and IL-1β) whereas increased M2 macrophage markers (CD206) in colitis mice, suggesting it could regulate macrophage polarization. Furthermore, the levels of HK2 and lactic acid in colon tissues were significantly reduced by XHCF, indicating that XHCF could inhibit glycolysis. It also down-regulated HK2 expression in macrophages challenged by LPS. In addition, XHCF enhanced the phosphorylation of AMPK both in vivo and in vitro , suggesting the involvement of AMPK in XHCF function. Conclusions XHCF ameliorated DSS-induced colitis in mice via inhibition of M1 macrophage polarization, probably by the modulation of macrophage metabolic reprogramming via AMPK, contributing to its anti-inflammatory activity. The synergistic actions of multiple ingredients might be responsible for the therapeutic benefits of XHCF on UC.
