Enhancement effects of chelating agents on the degradation of tetrachloroethene in Fe(III) catalyzed percarbonate system

Zhouwei Miao,Xiaogang Gu,Shuguang Lu,Mark L. Brusseau,Xiang Zhang,Xiaori Fu,Muhammad Danish,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui

The performance of Fe(III)-based catalyzed sodium percarbonate (SPC) for stimulating the oxidation of tetrachloroethene (PCE) for groundwater remediation applications was investigated. The chelating agents citric acid monohydrate (CIT), oxalic acid (OA), and glutamic acid (Glu) significantly enhanced the degradation of PCE. Conversely, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) had a negative impact on PCE degradation, which may due to its strong Fe chelation and HO scavenging abilities. However, excessive SPC or chelating agent will retard PCE degradation. In addition, investigations using free radical probe compounds and radical scavengers revealed that PCE was primarily degraded by HO radical oxidation in both the chelated and non-chelated systems, while O 2 − also participated in the non-chelated system and the OA and Glu modified systems. According to the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies, the presence of HO in the Fe(III)/SPC system was maintained much longer than that in the Fe(II)/SPC system. The results indicated that the addition of CIT, OA or Glu indeed enhanced the generation of HO in the first 10   min and promoted degradation efficiency by increasing the amount of Fe(III) and maintaining the concentration of HO radicals in solution. In conclusion, chelated Fe(III)-based catalyzed SPC oxidation is a promising method for the remediation of PCE-contaminated groundwater.

Phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with uranium and chromium by sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) enhanced with slow-release composite chelating agent (EDTA/ammonium citrate)

Zixin Lin,Guanghui Wang,Zhongkui Zhou,Nansheng Deng,Xuewen Zhang

BACKGROUND Soil in uranium mining areas is contaminated by uranium and associated heavy metals, posing a significant threat to human health and ecological security. Chelating agent assisted phytoremediation is a cost-effective and ecologically friendly remediation approach for uranium and associated heavy metals contaminated soil. In this work, a novel slow-release composite chelating agent (SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC) was fabricated using carboxymethyl chitosan-graft-carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CMC-g-CMCD) as a slow-release carrier and EDTA/ammonium citrate (AC) as a composite chelating agent through the spray drying method, which was used for phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with uranium and chromium. RESULTS CMC-g-CMCD exhibited superior slow-release performance for both EDTA and AC in comparison with CMC and CMCD. When applied to soil contaminated with uranium (U) and chromium (Cr), SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC effectively regulated the release of U and Cr. Sunflowers ( Helianthus annuus L.) grown in treated soil showed a significant increase in U and Cr uptake by 70.55% and 35.55%, respectively, and reduced leaching losses by 34.88% and 37.42%. CONCLUSION SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC not only assists in the phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with U and Cr but also reduces the risk of leaching into groundwater during the soil phytoremediation process. SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC-assisted phytoremediation technology was an effective and environmentally friendly remediation means for the removal of U and heavy metals from contaminated soils in uranium mining areas. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Insights into the inhibitive mechanism of chelators for biodiesel oxidation induced by Cu2+/Fe2+: An experimental and computational study

Xinru Han,Rongyan Li,Fashe Li,Yaozong Duan,Hua Wang

Biodiesel has attracted widespread attention as a renewable energy source. However, the presence of metal ion contaminants in biodiesel can lead to a decrease in fuel oxidative stability performance and alter fuel physicochemical properties, greatly limiting its large-scale application. This study proposes an effective method to inhibit biodiesel oxidation catalyzed by Cu 2+ /Fe 2+ via complexation of metal ions by chelators. Two typical chelators (1-Hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, HEDP; 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid, PBTCA) were tested for their capability to improve the oxidation stability of biodiesel. The addition of HEDP was able to counteract the undesirable catalyzed oxidation effects on biodiesel induced by both Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ , while PBTCA was only effective for the case induced by Fe 2+ . With 0.05% HEDP addition, the oxidation induction times of biodiesel samples contaminated by Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ were extended by about 12 and 20 times, respectively. For the case of 0.05% PBTCA addition, the oxidation induction time of Fe 2+ contaminated biodiesel sample was extended by about 20 times, while that of Cu 2+ contaminated biodiesel sample was only extended by about 37%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated that either the addition of HEDP or PBTCA has little effect on the chemical structure of biodiesel. Molecular dynamics calculations were then carried out to unravel the inhibitive mechanism of HEDP and PBTCA on biodiesel oxidation. The complexation of Cu 2+ /Fe 2+ by HEDP and PBTCA can block the chain branching pathways, reduce the generation of active radicals and thus inhibit biodiesel oxidation.

Influence of complexing agent on the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions by modified mesoporous SiO2

Yu Liu,Zimo Lou,Yue Sun,Xiaoxin Zhou,Shams Ali Baig,Xinhua Xu

In this study, SiO 2 -EDTA was prepared by silanization reaction between N-(trimethoxysilylpropyl) ethylenediamine triacetic acid, trisodium salt (EDTA-silane) and hydroxyl groups for enhanced removal of Pb(II), Pb(II)-Cit (the clathrate generated by Pb(II) and trisodium citrate dehydrate(Cit)) and Pb(II)-EDTA(20%) from aqueous solutions. SiO 2 -EDTA composites were characterized using SEM, TEM, EDX-mapping, FTIR, XPS and TGA analyses. The influence of solution pH, initial concentration, contact time and co-existing interferents were also studied. Results demonstrated that the composite successfully adsorbed 147.52, 107.65 and 124.18 mg g −1 of Pb(II), Pb(II)-Cit, and Pb(II)-EDTA (20%), respectively with the initial Pb(II) concentration of 100 mg L −1 . Kinetics study revealed that the adsorption rate was significantly high at the beginning and then reached to equilibrium within 1.0 h. Moreover, Pb(II) adsorption capacities were found to considerably affected by co-existing cations and not inhibited by natural organic matter (NOM). Characterization analyses confirmed that EDTA was successfully assembled on SiO 2 which had been used as a supporting matrix due to its huge specific surface area. Findings from this study suggested that the present composite could be considered as a promising adsorbent for large scale treatment of wastewater containing elevated Pb(II) concentration.

The Effect of Chelating Agents on Enhancement of 1,1,1-Trichloroethane and Trichloroethylene Degradation by Z-nZVI-Catalyzed Percarbonate Process

Danish Muhammad,Gu Xiaogang,Lu Shuguang,Zhang Xiang,Fu Xiaori,Xue Yunfei,Miao Zhouwei,Ahmad Ayyaz,Naqvi Muhammad,Qureshi Abdul Sattar

This study primarily focused on the performance of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) and trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation involving redox reactions in zeolite-supported nanozerovalent iron composite (Z-nZVI)-catalyzed sodium percarbonate (SPC) system in aqueous solution with five different chelating agents (CAs) including oxalic acid (OA), citric acid monohydrate (CAM), glutamic acid (GA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and L-ascorbic acid (ASC). The experimental results showed that the addition of OA achieved almost 100 % degradation of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE. The addition of CAM and GA also significantly increased the contaminant degradation, while excessive addition of them inhibited the degradation. In contrast, EDTA and ASC showed negative impacts on 1,1,1-TCA and TCE degradation, which might be due to the strong reactivity with iron and OH ● scavenging characteristics. The efficiency with CA addition on 1,1,1-TCA and TCE degradation decreased in the order of OA > CAM > GA > no CAs > EDTA > ASC. The extensive investigations using probe compound tests and scavenger tests revealed that both contaminants degraded primarily by OH ● and O 2 –● in chelated Z-nZVI-catalyzed SPC system. The significant improvement in 1,1,1-TCA and TCE degradation efficiency was accredited due to the (i) increase in concentration of Fe 2+ and (ii) continuous generation of OH ● radicals and maintenance of its quantity, ensuring more stability in the aqueous solution. Finally, the complete mineralization of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE in the OA-chelated, Z-nZVI-catalyzed SPC system was confirmed without any chlorinated intermediate by-products detected, demonstrating a great potential of this technique in the application of groundwater remediation. Schematic representation of the reactive oxygen species in the chelated Z-nZVI-catalyzed percarbonate system for the degradation of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE

EDTA, oxalate, and phosphate ions enhanced reactive oxygen species generation and sulfamethazine removal by zero-valent iron

Yuwei Pan,Minghua Zhou,Qi Wang,Jingju Cai,Yusi Tian,Ying Zhang

The activation rate of oxygen by zero-valent iron (Fe°) was very low. In this study, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), oxalate (Ox), and phosphate ions (Na 2 HPO 4 ) were used to enhance the oxygen activation by Fe° for sulfamethazine (SMT) removal. The addition of these ligands could significantly enhance the SMT degradation. SMT removal was improved from 10.5 % in the Fe° system (360 min) to 70.3 %, 85.2 % and 77.8 % in the Fe°/EDTA (60 min), Fe°/Ox (180 min) and Fe°/phosphate (360 min) systems, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared reflection (FTIR), contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of Fe° in different systems were recorded. The presence of chelating agents hydroxylated Fe°, inhibited the iron oxide formation on the Fe° surface and promoted iron ion release from the solid. Moreover, the agents improved the recovery of surface Fe 2+ which could subsequently enhance the activation of O 2 to produce more H 2 O 2 and reactive oxygen radicals for SMT removal. OH radical produced mainly through H 2 O 2 decomposition was primarily responsible for removing SMT in all three systems. The Fe° system added with chelating agents is a new and promising approach for treating wastewaters containing ligands.

Solubilities of novel ethylene oxide diphosphate-based chelating agents in supercritical carbon dioxide

Di Duan,Baogen Su,Huabin Xing,Yun Su,Yiwen Yang,Qilong Ren

The solubilities of newly synthesized chelating agents, i.e. diethylene glycol bis (2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentyl) dimethyl diphosphate (EG2TP), diethylene glycol bis (3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexyl) dimethyl diphosphate (EG2TH), and diethylene glycol dioctyl dimethyl diphosphate (EG2Oct) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) were determined at temperatures ranging from 313 to 333   K and pressures ranging from 9 to 17   MPa. Solubility increases in the order of EG2Oct (MW   =   518.56)   <   EG2TH (MW   =   546.61)   <   EG2TP (MW   =   518.56). Solubility parameter and connectivity index of these compounds were calculated and discussed, which indicated that branched side chains of the ligands play an important part in increasing solubility in scCO 2 . A semi empirical model proposed by Bartle was used to correlate the experimental data and AARD values were calculated to be 5.2%, 4.4%, and 3.4% for EG2TP, EG2TH, and EG2Oct, respectively. Also the quantum chemical calculation and COSMO-RS method were introduced to estimate the structure effect on the interaction with CO 2 by computing the charge density distribution on the surface of these compounds. As expected, better masking effect of the side chains result in higher solubility.

Cuproptosis, a potential target for the therapy of Diabetic Critical Limb Ischemia

Tao Bai,Luhao Wang,Zhentao Qiao,Zhiwei Wang

Diabetic patients are considered as the high risk population to develop critical limb ischemia (CLI), a peripheral vascular disease (PVD) resulted from atherosclerosis. Cuproptosis is a novel copper-dependent cell death that has shown the regulatory role in diabetes, while its effect on diabetic CLI has not been explored yet. In this study, Diabetic CLI mice was induced by femoral artery ligation (FAL) on diabetic mice. Endothelial injury in diabetic CLI was mimicked in human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) via the induction with high glucose (HG) and nutrient deprivation (ND). Besides, copper chelator Ammonium Tetrathiomolybdate (TM), which has shown the anti-cuproptosis property, was administrated to explore its potential effects on diabetic CLI mice and HG/ND-induced HMEC-1 cells. Strikingly, obvious cuproptosis was found in the gastrocnemius muscles of diabetic CLI mice and HG/ND-induced HMEC-1 cells, as evidenced by the copper overload and dysregulated cuproptosis-related proteins (such as Fe-S cluster proteins, copper exporter ATP7A, and copper importer SLC31A1). More importantly, TM protected against the hindlimb ischemic damages in diabetic CLI mice and alleviated cuproptosis-associated cell deaths in HG/ND-induced HMEC-1 cells. In summary, this study indicates the involvements of cuproptosis in diabetic CLI, and provides novel insights into copper chelator TM on diabetic CLI therapy.

Copper selective 8-aminoquinoline based tetradentate chelators as anticancer agents

Yingzhen Guan,Michel Nguyen,Anne Robert,Yan Liu,Bernard Meunier

Cancer cell proliferation and metastasis are known to be dependent on angiogenesis which is regulated by several parameters including copper availability. Tetradentate monoquinoline (TDMQ) ligands constitute a series of chelators tailored to regulate copper homeostasis due to their specificity for copper(II) with respect to Cu(I) or other biometals like iron or zinc. One of these chelators, TDMQ20 efficiently inhibits both proliferation and migration of several human cancer cell lines, better than the reference drug 5-fluorouracil, and with higher selectivity indexes with respect to non-cancer human cells. The biological activity of TDMQ20 may be driven by the coordination chemistry of copper, and the ability of this chelator to restore copper homeostasis and its subsequent redox properties. The anticancer mechanism of action of TDMQ20 involves intracellular production of reactive oxygen species, drastic mitochondrial damages and induction of tumor cell apoptosis. These data support the selection of TDMQ20 as drug-candidate against several human cancers.

Potassium persulfate as an effective oxidizer for chemical mechanical polishing of GCr15 bearing steel

Zhao Ting,Jiang Liang,Liu Jinwei,Wu Hanqiang,Qin Na,Qian Linmao

Potassium persulfate was used as an effective oxidizer for chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of GCr15 steel. The effects of pH, potassium persulfate content and chelating agents on the CMP performance of GCr15 steel were investigated, and the surface films formed in the potassium persulfate-based slurries were characterized accordingly. It is revealed experimentally that, with pH increasing from 2.0 to 9.0, the material removal rate (MRR) is independent of pH while the surface roughness R a decreases. At pH 8.0, as the potassium persulfate content increases, the MRR linearly increases with a slope of 48 nm min −1  mM −1 , but the surface quality continues to deteriorate accompanied with the black Fe 3 O 4 residue due to the severe corrosion by persulfate. In particular, Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions are continuously produced by oxidation of persulfate, and a significant part of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ further reacts with OH − to form a non-uniform and rough surface film which primarily consists of Fe 3 O 4 . After adding an appropriate chelating agent EDTA, the R a reaches 1.7 nm without any black residue due to the chelation reactions between iron ions and EDTA. The findings suggest that a nano-precision surface finish of bearing steel could be achieved at weakly alkaline pH with persulfate-based slurries. Graphic abstract
