Structural Design of a Cellulose-Based Solid Amine Adsorbent for the Complete Removal and Colorimetric Detection of Cr(VI)

Fei Xue,Hui He,Hongxiang Zhu,Huanhuan Huang,Qi Wu,Shuangfei Wang

A cellulose-based solid amine adsorbent (MCC/TEPAA) with high amino density for the detection and removal of Cr(VI) was designed and prepared through using epichlorohydrin cross-linking with MCC (microcrystalline cellulose) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA). The structure and amino density of the cellulose-based solid amine adsorbents could be tailored by adjusting the structure of the amines (triethylenetetramine or diethylenetriamine). The as-prepared cellulose-based solid amine adsorbents could detect and completely remove Cr(VI) from water, and the concentration of Cr(VI) solution after adsorption met the standard concentration of Cr(VI) solution for drinking water (0.05 mg/L). In particular, the MCC/TEPAA, supported by MCC with porosity as a framework, promoted the adsorption rate (adsorption equilibrium within only 10 min), removal rate (100%) of Cr(VI), and adsorption capacity (327.72 mg/g). In addition, the limit of colorimetric detection of Cr(VI) by MCC/TEPAA was 0.5 mg/L at 20 min when other interfering heavy metal ions exist. The adsorption and colorimetric detection mechanism of Cr(VI) on MCC/TEPAA was proposed to include electrostatic interactions, chelating reactions, and oxidation–reduction reactions, all of which contributed to the excellent adsorption and detection performance.

Highly selective ion precipitation flotation for ternary Co–Zn–Mn separation: Stepwise chelation capture of Co and Zn from simulated zinc hydrometallurgy wastewater

Yanfang Huang,Meimei Wang,Bingbing Liu,Shengpeng Su,Hu Sun,Shuzhen Yang,Guihong Han

Ion precipitation flotation technology was demonstrated to be an efficient method for the separation of valuable metals from low-concentration solution. However, the selective separation of three metals from mixing solution is a great challenge, and highly selective reagents are the key to polymetallic separation. In this work, stepwise separation of Co and Zn from the simulated zinc hydrometallurgy wastewater containing ternary Co–Zn–Mn metals by ion precipitation flotation process was proposed. It's demonstrated that organic reagents of 1-nitroso-2-naphthol (NN) and sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) had excellent selectivity for the capture of Co and Zn to form respective precipitate from wastewaters via the chelation reactions. After precipitation, dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) were chosen as surfactants for the separation of Co and Zn sediments from the solution via the flotation process. The effects of solution pH, molar ratio, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the selective precipitation efficiencies of Co and Zn as well as the effects of surfactant dosage and flotation gas velocity on the flotation separation efficiencies were systematically investigated. It's demonstrated that the comprehensive recovery rates of Co, Mn, and Zn reach 98%, 90%, and 99%, respectively. After separation, oxidation calcination of the foam products was conducted to prepare high-purity Co 3 O 4 and ZnO nanoparticles in which the organic matters were burnt out with gas emissions. The stepwise chelation capture mechanisms of Co and Zn by highly selective precipitation reagents were minutely discussed. It's demonstrated that the proposed selective stepwise precipitation and flotation method is suitable for recovery of critical metal ions from low-concentration polymetallic wastewaters.

Multidimensional Force Cleaning of Impurities on the Surface of Silicon Wafer for the Downstream Product Processing of Integrated Circuits

Su Zifei,Shi Chunjing,Meng Fanning,Yang Ying,Yang Jinyao,Wang Zhihui,Wang Menghang,Cao Chun

Cleaning of silicon (Si) wafers has become the key process in integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing, improving the quality and usability of Si wafers. However, traditional cleaning slurries usually contain strong and corrosive acids and alkalis, resulting in the potential damages to the environment and operators, as well as corrosion to Si wafers and production of wastes. To solve this challenge, a novel green slurry was developed, including Sodium carbonate and Citric acid. Under the action of the developed slurry, Si wafers were treated via synergetic effect between interval ultrasonication and paddle stirring. Orthogonal tests were performed through adjusting the concentration of Sodium carbonate and Citric acid, and time and temperature of cleaning. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis has revealed that the surface impurities on Si wafers reach their lowest levels (Na < 0.3%, Fe < 0.15%) under specific processing conditions. These optimal conditions include a Sodium carbonate concentration of 12 wt.% and a Citric acid concentration of 10 wt.%. Additionally, the processing temperature should be maintained at 45 °C, with a duration of 50 min. Prior to and after cleaning, surface roughness Ra of Si wafer is reduced from 9.39 ± 0.38 to 5.56 ± 0.51 nm. Combining x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis, these impurities, such as oxyacid, organics, metallic oxides and metal ions, were removed from the Si wafers under different acidic and alkaline environments, through chelation and redox reactions. Therefore, the developed green slurry and novel approach using chemical and ultrasonic composite fields provide new insights for the cleaning and manufacturing of Si wafers.

Dynamic Cross-Linking, Self-Healing, Antibacterial Hydrogel for Regenerating Irregular Cranial Bone Defects

Zuoxiang Dong,Jian Xu,Peng Lun,Zeyu Wu,Wenshuai Deng,Peng Sun

Given the widespread clinical demand, addressing irregular cranial bone defects poses a significant challenge following surgical procedures and traumatic events. In situ-formed injectable hydrogels are attractive for irregular bone defects due to their ease of administration and the ability to incorporate ceramics, ions, and proteins into the hydrogel. In this study, a multifunctional hydrogel composed of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA)-grafted dopamine (DO), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), calcium ions (Ca2+), nanohydroxyapatite (nHA), and magnesium oxide (MgO) (DOCMCHM) was prepared to address irregular cranial bone defects via dynamic Schiff base and chelation reactions. DOCMCHM hydrogel exhibits strong adhesion to wet tissues, self-healing properties, and antibacterial characteristics. Biological evaluations indicate that DOCMCHM hydrogel has good biocompatibility, in vivo degradability, and the ability to promote cell proliferation. Importantly, DOCMCHM hydrogel, containing MgO, promotes the expression of osteogenic protein markers COL-1, OCN, and RUNX2, and stimulates the formation of new blood vessels by upregulating CD31. This study could provide meaningful insights into ion therapy for the repair of cranial bone defects.

Dual modes reinforced silk adhesives for tissue repair: Integration of textiles and inorganic particles in silk gel for enhanced mechanical and adhesive strength

Lu Liu,Enling Hu,Haoyu Qiu,Qian Xu,Kun Yu,Ruiqi Xie,Fei Lu,Qi Wang,Bitao Lu,Qing Li,Guangqian Lan

Skin wound healing in dynamic environments remains challenging. Conventional gels are not ideal dressing materials for wound healing due to difficulties in completely sealing wounds and the inability to deliver drugs quickly and precisely to the injury. To tackle these issues, we propose a multifunctional silk gel that rapidly forms strong adhesions to tissue, has excellent mechanical properties, and delivers growth factors to the wound. Specifically, the presence of Ca 2+ in the silk protein leads to a solid adhesion to the wet tissue through a chelation reaction with water-trapping behavior; the integrated chitosan fabric and CaCO 3 particles ensure enhanced mechanical strength of the silk gel for better adhesion and robustness during wound repair; and the preloaded growth factor further promoted wound healing. The results showed the adhesion and tensile breaking strength were as high as 93.79 kPa and 47.20 kPa, respectively. MSCCA@CaCO 3 -aFGF could remedy the wound model in 13 days, with 99.41 % wound shrinkage without severe inflammatory responses. Due to strong adhesion properties and mechanical strength, MSCCA@CaCO 3 -aFGF can be a promising alternative to conventional sutures and tissue closure staples for wound closure and healing. Therefore, MSCCA@CaCO 3 -aFGF is expected to be a strong candidate for the next generation of adhesives.
