Superelastic and Washable Micro/Nanofibrous Sponges Based on Biomimetic Helical Fibers for Efficient Thermal Insulation

Yang Fengjin,Wang Zhifei,Zhang Wei,Wang Sai,Liu Yi-Tao,Wang Fei,Surmenev Roman A.,Yu Jianyong,Zhang Shichao,Ding Bin

A superelastic and washable sponge based on biomimetic spring-like helical micro/nanofibers is directly fabricated by multiple-jet electrospinning technology. The resulting sponge exhibits both lightweight (low density of 7.1 mg cm –3 ) and robust mechanical property (large tensile strain up to 200%). The sponge also shows efficient thermal insulation performance with low thermal conductivity (24.85 mW m –1 K –1 ), and remains structural stability even after cyclic washing, making it a promising candidate for personal protection in cold environments.

High-Strength Superstretchable Helical Bacterial Cellulose Fibers with a “Self-Fiber-Reinforced Structure”

Qianqian Liang,Dong Zhang,Peng Ji,Nan Sheng,Minghao Zhang,Zhuotong Wu,Shiyan Chen,Huaping Wang

As a hydrogel membrane grown on the gas–liquid interface by bacterial culture that can be industrialized, bacterial cellulose (BC) cannot give full play to the advantages of its natural nanofibers. Conversion to the properties of nanofibers from high-performance to macrofibers represents a difficult material engineering challenge. Herein, we construct high-strength BC macrofibers with a “self-fiber-reinforced structure” using a dry-wet spinning method by adjusting the BC dissolution and concentration. The macrofiber with a tensile strength of 649 MPa and a strain of 17.2% can be obtained, which is one of the strongest and toughest cellulose fibers. In addition, the macrofiber can be fabricated to a superstretchable helical fiber without adding other elastomers or auxiliary materials. When the helical diameter is 1.6 mm, the ultimate stretch reaches 1240%. Meanwhile, cyclic tests show that the mechanical properties and morphology of the fiber remained stable after 100 times of 100% cyclic stretching. It is exciting that the helical fiber also owns outstanding knittability, washability, scalability, and dyeability. Furthermore, superstretchable functional helical BC fibers can be fabricated by embedding functional materials (carbon materials, conductive polymers, etc.) on BC or in the spinning dope, which can be made to wearable devices such as fiber solid-state supercapacitors. This work provides a scalable way for high-strength superstretchable and multifunctional fibers applied in wearable devices.

Super strong and tough bioglass-ceramics composites with bioinspired interdigitated suture interface and 3D helicoidally arranged fiber

Xueni Zhao,Zhipeng Zhu,Jinxin Guan

Bioglass-ceramics hardly possessed satisfied strength and toughness simultaneously. The poor toughness and deformability heavily hinder their application in load-bearing bone repair. Drawn from the interdigitated sutures and laminated microstructure in nature, a bioinspired interdigitated suture interface between bioglass (BG) and hydroxyapatite (HA) and 3D helicoidal arrangement of fiber were constructed in bioglass reinforced hydroxyapetite (GHA) composites, creating super strong and tough carbon fiber reinforced GHA (CF/GHA) hybrid composites. The microstructure, reinforcing mechanism, and 3D failure mode of the composites were investigated at the microscale and nanoscale. The GHA composites sintered at 980 °C exhibited a compressive strength at 324 MPa and a failure strain at 9.9 % which was 6.89 times and 3.19 times that of HA ceramics, respectively. The significant performance improvements can be attributed to elliptical disc-like BG homogeneously distributed in the HA matrix, the interdigitated suture interface of about 1 μm thickness, and chemical bonding between BG and HA matrix. The compressive strain and the fracture toughness of spatial Bouligand structural CF/GHA with layer thickness of 250 μm and K/4 CF per layer (SB DK/4-GHA980) reached 14.0 % and 35 MPa m 1/2 , which increased by 41.4 % and 45.8 % compared with that of GHA980, respectively. The thin layer (small layer thickness) in SB DK/4-GHA980 can produce a more tortuous crack deflection path, exhibiting the higher fracture toughness. The toughening mechanism of spatial Bouligand structural CF/GHA hybrid composites included Bouligand structural CF, fiber debonding and pullout, and the step-like fracture due to the addition of CF based on the strengthening and toughening effect of BG in the composites. The composites can be used in the load-bearing bone application owing to the similar strength and superior toughness to human cortical bone and increased deformability. The study opens a new avenue to strengthen and toughen brittle ceramics.

The Super Tough Saddle of Mantis Shrimp Derived from Strain Transformation Between Helical Fibers and Interlaminar Fibrils

Binjie Zhang,Xianchang Peng,Zhengzhi Mu,Shichao Niu,Zhiwu Han,Luquan Ren

Mantis shrimps deliver one of the fastest strikes with their powerful dactyl clubs. The kinematic energy derived by a saddle storing and releasing mechanical energy with large deformation. As an exoskeleton, the toughness of saddles can achieve a remarkable value ≈15.28 ± 2.32 MJ m −3 , which exceeds most bulk natural materials. The excellent toughness of saddles is mainly attributed to the synergy of the helical mineralized fiber architectures and interlaminar fibrils. The interlaminar fibrils connect adjacent mineralized fiber layers closely, enhancing the toughness through viscoelastic deformation during sliding and separating of adjacent layers. They further cooperate with rigid interlacing fiber structure induced by helical structure to transform little normal strain to large shear strain utilizing incompressibility of soft fibrils further to enhance strain energy for toughening. Inspired by unique laminated saddles, the laminate composites are designed with basalt fabrics achieving remarkable fracture toughness to solve the problem of delamination in traditional laminate composites with poor interlaminar toughness. The Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of bio-inspired laminate composites respectively increase by 44% and 118% reaching 906.8 and 1394.6 J m −2 , which provides an innovative bionic strategy for designing new generation structural engineering materials with excellent mechanical properties.

Gelation behavior and supramolecular chirality of a BTA derivative in a deep eutectic solvent

Ying Zhang,Hejie Wang,Qintang Li,Xiao Chen

As novel solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are non-toxic, easily producible and biocompatible, which is attractive for eutectogel fabrication. In this work, a benzene 1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) derivative (substituted by three hexanoic acid) was selected to prepare a supramolecular gel in a suitable DES composed of choline chloride and phenylacetic acid molecules. The obtained eutectogel exhibited higher stability than that produced in conventional solvents. The gel microstructure was composed of spiral fiber networks as confirmed from atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy observations. Macroscopic chirality was therefore recognized by the circular dichromatic spectrum, though such a supramolecular chiral signal was random. To explore the gelation mechanism, the effect of BTA derivative molecular structure change was systematically investigated. With the help of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction, the gel formation was attributed to the π–π stacking of adjacent BTA molecules and the three-fold hydrogen bond between amide groups or the hydrogen bond between carboxylic groups. Furthermore, the directional hydrogen bonds between BTA and solvent molecules induced their aggregate to form one-dimensional fibers, which were either left- or right-handed. The obtained results not only extend the gel systems in DESs, but also help design the supramolecular chirality from non-chiral molecules.

Spatial toughening mechanism of ZrB2-SiC spiral fibers composites up to 1500 °C via SEVNB with femtosecond lasers and 3D-XRM methods

Ruiji Zhang,Fangwei Guo,Wenchen Zhang,Fei Pan,Xing Zhang

Ceramics containing profiled fiber-like additives (nanotubes, whiskers, etc.) show high mechanical properties. However, the toughening mechanism is debated due to its complex multi-scale microstructure. In this work, ZrB 2 (Z)-20 vol%SiC(S) spiral fibers (ZS sf ) were prepared by liquid rope effect and non-solvent induced phase separation, while quantitative relation of mechanical properties and structure were investigated by using SEVNB with femtosecond lasers and in-situ 3D-XRM simulation. The ZrB 2 -SiC composites with hierarchy ZS sf exhibited a ∼60 % increase in fracture toughness (5.45 MPa m 1/2 ) compared with blank composites, while the toughening efficiency of the hierarchy ZS sf increased over 2 times compared to the 1D and 2D toughening additives. The ZS sf with a thin graphite-like layer and spiral structure with hierarchy pores provided a torsional release effect that changed brittle fracture to the pseudoplastic fracture, where topological interlocking of 3D crimped structure hindered rapid cracking propagation. Additionally, the enhanced toughness was attributed to the uniform reconstruction of the stress field induced by hierarchical inner pores. The preserved 3D topological interlocking and uniform stress reconstruction lead to the highly stable fracture toughness of the ZS sf composites up to 1500 °C.

Bio-Inspired Low-Cost Fabrication of Stretchable, Adhesive, Transparent, and Multi-Functionalized Joint Wound Dressings

Wenjun Ma,Sida Ling,Yingzhe Liu,Zhuo Chen,Jianhong Xu

Ideal joint wound dressings should not only promote wound healing and have good mechanical properties including stretchability and adhesion but also possess functions such as sterilization or motion monitoring. The multiple characteristic requirements have greatly limited the material’s alternative, resulting in research on functional joint wound dressings falling far short of market demand. Therefore, low-cost, comprehensive designs need to be developed. Herein, inspired by the spiral arteries in the endometrium, alginate-based helical fibers were introduced into polyacrylamide/gelatin (PAM-Gel) to obtain composite polymer membranes, realizing a combination of both mechanical and functional properties. Large scale (100 m) and high-throughput (10 times higher than literature) fabrication of helical microfibers were first achieved, ensuring the low cost of fiber preparation. The composite film had adequate stretchability (>300% strain), adhesion strength (14 kPa), high transparency, and good biocompatibility. The helical fibers could be easily functionalized without affecting the mechanical properties of the dressings, thus broadening the range of materials available for joint dressings. After different treatments of the helical fibers, controlled drug release and joint motion monitoring were realized. Therefore, this helical microfiber composite membrane design achieved low-cost preparation, good mechanical properties, and functionalities including healing promotion, drug release, and motion monitoring ability, demonstrating application potential.

Functionalized helical fibre bundles of carbon nanotubes as electrochemical sensors for long-term in vivo monitoring of multiple disease biomarkers

Wang Liyuan,Xie Songlin,Wang Zhiyuan,Liu Fei,Yang Yifan,Tang Chengqiang,Wu Xiaoying,Liu Peng,Li Yongjing,Saiyin Hexige,Zheng Shuang,Sun Xuemei,Xu Fan,Yu Hongbo,Peng Huisheng

Mechanical mismatches between implanted electronics and biological tissues can lead to inaccurate readings and long-term tissue damage. Here, we show that functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes twisted into helical fibre bundles that mimic the hierarchical structure of muscle can monitor multiple disease biomarkers in vivo. The flexible fibre bundles are injectable, have a low bending stiffness and display ultralow stress under compression. As proof-of-concept evidence of the sensing capabilities of these fibre bundles, we show that the fibre bundles enable the spatially resolved and real-time monitoring of H 2 O 2 when implanted in tumours in mice, and that they can be integrated with a wireless transmission system on an adhesive skin patch to monitor calcium ions and glucose in the venous blood of cats for 28 d. The versatility of the helical fibre bundles as chemically functionalized electrochemical sensors makes them suitable for multiple sensing applications in biomedicine and healthcare.
