In forensic science, the demand for the discovery and extraction of latent fingermarks at crime scenes in a fast and convenient way is still urgent. Herein, a rutile Cr- and Sb-codoped TiO 2 nanoparticle was synthesized via homogeneous precipitation and was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence. Subsequently, the as-prepared nanoparticle was used to visualize latent fingermarks using a powder dusting method and to enhance the visualization of bloody fingermarks using a small particle reagent method on porous, semiporous, and nonporous substrates. Notably, the anti-ultraviolet property of this yellow nanoparticle was investigated. This intriguing property contributed to the detection of latent fingermarks on strong-fluorescence or multicolored surfaces in a negative-image manner. Moreover, two potential interaction mechanisms were proposed between hemoglobin and surfactants in bloody fingermark enhancement. This work showed that this rutile TiO 2 nanoparticle doped with Cr and Sb is a versatile eikonogen for the rapid visualization of latent and bloody fingermarks and has high sensitivity, selectivity, contrast as well as wide applicability compared with traditional developing methods.

Latent blood fingerprints (LBFPs) can provide critical information of foul play and help identify the suspects at violent crime scenes. The current methods for LBFP visualization are still not satisfactory because of the low sensitivity or complicated protocol. This study demonstrates a simple and effective LBFP visualization strategy by integrating a new amphiphilic fluorescent amino-functionalized conjugated polymer with the cotton-pad developing protocol. LBFPs on various substrates are visualized by simply covering them with the polymer solution-soaked cotton pads. The images display clear fingerprint patterns, ridge details, and sweat pores, even on very challenging substrates such as painted wood and multicolored can. The gray value analysis confirms semiquantitatively the enhancement of the contrast between ridges and furrows. Even LBFPs with various contaminations or aged for more than 600 days are effectively developed and visualized. The developed fingerprint images show superior stability over long storage time and against solvent washing. Moreover, the polymer causes no degradation of DNAs in the blood, suggesting the possibility of further DNA profiling and identification after development. The mechanistic investigation suggests that the formation of positive or inverted images can be attributed to the synergistic effects from the affinity between polymer and blood, and the affinity betwen polymer and substrate, as well as the slight quenching of polymer fluorescence by blood. Furthermore, the covalent bonding between the protonated primary amino group and proteins in blood endows the stability of the developed fingerprints. The result rationalizes the molecular design of the fluorescent polymer and sheds new light on the future strategies to effective LBFP visualization in practical applications.

Abstract Visualization of latent blood fingerprints (LBFPs) at violent crime scenes is very important for identifying criminals, while current reagents/methods for developing LBFPs still have more or less limitations. Here, we advance a new strategy for LBFP development based on the dye-soaked cotton pads as “ensemble” materials. The cotton pad was first soaked in the dye solution and then placed on the substrate with deposited blood fingerprint for development. After peeling off the pad, uniform and legible fingerprint patterns were obtained in all cases where different dyes and substrates were employed. The dye-soaked pads displayed superior developing effect compared with those using conventional methods (immersing, smearing and spraying). The pad-based method exhibited many other merits, such as little damage to the fingerprint patterns and less dye stains left on fingerprint and substrate, as well as the reusability. This pad-based method was also applicable for developing sebaceous latent fingerprints by replacing the small molecular dyes with fluorescent conjugated polymer nanoparticles. In all, the dye-soaked cotton pad developing protocol is feasible, cost-effective and universally applicable for developing different types of latent fingerprints on various substrates. Both latent sebaceous and blood fingerprints may provide valuable information for forensic investigation. To detect both types of fingerprints with no need to predistinguish them, a new adaptive developing strategy was proposed. A cationic conjugated polymer with poly[p-(phenylene ethylene)-alt-(thienylene ethynylene)] backbone (PPETE-NMe3+) was synthesized, which was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) to form the developing solution. Fingerprints were developed by a simple dropping and incubating process without any pre-/post-treatments. Fluorescent photographs of the developed fingerprints on various substrates demonstrated that this developing strategy was effective for both types of fingerprints on nonporous substrates. Gray value analysis further confirmed the enhancement of the legibility of the fingerprint images. The preliminary mechanism exploration suggested that certain weak interactions, such as hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic interaction, may synergistically contribute to the interaction between the polymer and fingerprint components. The molecular design of the polymer combined with an appropriate solvent endowed the developing system the adaptiveness toward different types of fingerprints. This adaptive developing strategy made the fingerprint-developing process more efficient and may be further extended to more practical application scenes.

Taking the same developing strategy for different types of latent fingerprints is helpful in improving the efficiency of criminal investigation. Here we advanced a new strategy based on amino-functionalized poly( p -phenylenevinylene) nanoparticles (PPV-brPEI NPs) in aqueous colloidal solution as the developing reagent. The desirable amino functionality and strong emission of NPs were simultaneously realized by adding branched polyethyleneimine (brPEI) during the process of thermal elimination of the PPV polymer precursor. The NPs were demonstrated to have negligible effects on the extraction of biological information from DNA . Using the PPV-brPEI NPs-soaked cotton pad, both latent sebaceous fingerprints (LSFPs) and latent blood fingerprints (LBFPs) can be effectively developed on different nonporous substrates. This strategy was highly sensitive and effective for aged, contaminated and moldy fingerprints. Additionally, the developed fingerprints could tolerate humidity environment and the alcohol atmosphere. The mechanism investigation suggests that interaction between PPV-brPEI NPs and sebum ingredients contributes to the development of LSFPs and interaction between PPV-brPEI NPs and proteins in blood contributes to the development of LBFPs, but the former is not as stable as the latter. This work provides a simple, environment/operator-friendly strategy for efficient fingerprint development, which is very promising for practical criminal investigations.
