A bio-based high-grafting-rate compatibilizer, itaconic anhydride grafted polypropylene (ITA-g-PP), was successfully prepared using 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-bis(tert-butylperoxy)hexane (L101) as the initiator and assisting by the radical trapping agent α-methyl styrene (AMS). Itaconic anhydride (ITA) was synthetically grafted onto polypropylene (PP) through a dynamic reactive extrusion. The influences of variant contents of ITA and L101 on the grafting reaction were systematically investigated using infrared spectroscopy (IR), acid-base titration, melt flow index, contact angle, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical properties and rheological testing methods. The mechanical performances and microstructure of the wheat fiber (WF) enhanced PP composites were investigated. In addition, a series of comparisons were made between ITA-g-PP and self-made maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAH-g-PP) under the same conditions. The results show that the highest grafting rate of ITA-g-PP reached 1.45 %, greatly improving the hydrophilicity of PP. Under the same conditions, ITA-g-PP grafting rate can reach 1.2 %, and self-made MAH-g-PP grafted rate was only 0.75 %. The prepared ITA-g-PP can significantly enhance the adhesion of interfacial between WF and PP compared with traditional MAH grafted PP, thereby improving impact and tensile properties. Among them, adding ITA-g-PP to WF/PP composites can increase the impact strength by up to 29 %, while adding MAH-g-PP can only increase it by 17 % in WF/PP composites.

Luminogens without recognizable luminophores are attracting increasing attention owing to their particular photophysical properties and outstanding biocompatibility features. Despite rapid advances, it is still a formidable challenge to synthesize nonconjugated fluorescent materials with efficient near-infrared emission. Unlike traditional organic luminescent materials with long-range conjugation, the limited degree of electron delocalization and large energy gap are not favorable for long-wavelength emission. Herein, we observed universal intrinsic fluorescence formed from the mixtures of itaconic anhydride (ITA) and electron-rich solvents/monomers. Further, triethylamine (TEA) could promote the ring opening of ITA and subsequently generated the zwitterionic compound (I-TEA). The photophysical properties of I-TEA showed that I-TEA had the typical characteristics of concentration enhanced emission (CEE), excitation-dependent emission (EDF), temperature-sensitive emission (TSE), and efficient red emissions (λex = 585 nm, QY = 12.63%). The cytotoxicity assay indicated that I-TEA had low toxicity for MC3T3-E1 cells and was suitable for cell imaging. In addition, the PL properties and emission source of the mixtures of ITA and electron-rich solvents (DMSO and DMF) were preliminary investigated by NMR, fluorescence, and UV-vis spectroscopy techniques and theoretical calculations. This study reveals the general intrinsic fluorescence from mixtures of ITA and electron-rich solvents or monomers and provides a strategy for preparing nonconventional luminophores with efficient long-wavelength emission.

Chemotherapy, despite being the most common and effective cancer treatment, can cause several toxic adverse effects. Multimodal combined antitumor therapy, which accounts for the deficiency of monotherapy, has become an effective strategy for clinical cancer treatment. In this study, we describe the development of pH-sensitive Cy7-PEG-CA-DOX micelles with antitumor activity for controlled drug release, tumor imaging, and their synergy with photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy. The cyanine dye Cy7 was used as a near infrared (NIR) fluorophore and photosensitizer, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) served as a biocompatible carrier. The anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded onto PEG via aconitic anhydride bonds to increase pH sensitivity. Cy7-PEG-CA-DOX molecules initiated self-assembly to form nanomicelles (∼64.21 ± 0.49 nm) in aqueous solution. In vitro the DOX release rate reached 78% after 48 h at pH 5.5 due to the amide bond between DOX and aconitic anhydride becoming readily broken at low pH. Moreover, intracellular uptake images showed that Cy7-PEG-CA-DOX micelles effectively released DOX in 4T1 tumor cells. In vivo fluorescence imaging revealed that Cy7-PEG-CA-DOX micelles aggregated at tumor sites with optimal tumor imaging properties. More importantly, Cy7-PEG-CA-DOX micelles facilitated the favorable anti-breast cancer properties elicited by PTT and chemotherapy in vivo. This study provides a novel platform for constructing responsive multifunctional anticancer nanoparticles, which have significant potential applicability in controlled drug release and synergistic cancer therapy.

Nowadays, effluent treatment is a severe challenge mainly because of its complex composition, which includes oil, heavy metal ions, and dyes. Developing new intelligent membranes is one of the strategies to tackle these significant challenges in wastewater treatment . In this study, we fabricated asymmetric polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) membranes by grafting cross-linked poly (itaconic anhydride) (CL-PITA) nanoparticles onto the irradiated face. These nanoparticles were then functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and protonated with HCl to introduce numerous active electropositive amine groups. The fundamental purpose was to increase surface roughness, introduce numerous hydrophilic groups, and modify it to create a multi-functional PET membrane to separate complex environments. The promising results demonstrated that the protonated PET- g -ITA/DVB (10) -cat membrane exhibited excellent separation efficiencies (SE) for water/light oil, water/heavy oil and oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. Compared to PET- g -ITA/DVB (0) -cat, it showed superior performance in SE for O/W emulsion and flux decay for water/light oil after 10 cycles. More interestingly, owing to numerous positively charged active amino groups and negativley charged carboxylate groups, the intelligent membrane exhibited a high removal rate of ca. 90 % for anionic dye (congo red) and heavy metals (Cu 2+ and Co 2+ ), showing great potential in complex water treatment environments.
