The Role of Oxalic Acid in the Leaching System for Recovering Indium from Waste Liquid Crystal Display Panels

Jiaying Cui,Nengwu Zhu,Deliang Luo,Yao Li,Pingxiao Wu,Zhi Dang,Xuan Hu

In this study, oxalic acid showed better performance than inorganic acid in the indium leaching system from waste liquid crystal displays. The In3+ leaching efficiency with the powder dosage of 50 g/L came up to 100% within 45 min, using 0.5 M oxalic acid and stewing at 70 °C. Ultrasonic cavitation can improve the powder dosage. Combined with the substance analysis using ICP, XPS, SEM, and XRD, In2O3 dissolution depended on the distributive H+ concentration. Metal hydrolysis was a general negative phenomenon for ions loss in an acid leaching system. According to the Arrhenius model, the apparent activation energy for the indium leaching reaction was 43.622 kJ/mol, indicating that the indium leaching rate was mainly affected by the ion diffusion process through the solid–liquid interface and the chemical reaction process. Oxalic acid can maintain an appropriate H+ concentration to reduce the acid consumption from nontarget substances to relieve the powder surface corrosion for reuse and to inhibit metal hydrolysis, and its C2O42– ions also could precipitate some metal impurities such as Ca2+ and Sr2+ in the leachate.

Surface corrosion by microbial flora enhances the application potential of phosphate rock for cadmium remediation

Yonghui Xing,Yi Jiang,Song Liu,Shuxin Tan,Xuesong Luo,Qiaoyun Huang,Wenli Chen

Heavy metal pollution restricts the intensification of land and endangers human health through the food chain. Surface adsorption of heavy metals by soil natural minerals affects their mobility and biotoxicity, yet little is known about the fate of heavy metals after microorganisms affect the surface structure of minerals. Our study shows that ureolytic microbes corrode the surface of phosphate minerals through carbonate modification without changing their crystal structure but significantly enhancing their specific surface area. Compared with natural phosphate rock (PR), the concave surface of the flora-phosphate rock (FPR) exposes more Ca 2+ exchange sites, more active functional groups, and more straightforward to release phosphates that co-precipitate with Cd 2+ , resulting in an approximately tenfold increase in Cd 2+ adsorption. The adsorption of Cd 2+ by FPR is a spontaneous endothermic single-layer adsorption, which can quickly remove Cd 2+ in wastewater. FPR can also obviously change the pH of the soil by releasing phosphate to increase the stabilization effect of Cd 2+ . These results provide a sustainable approach to developing novel, cost-effective minerals for environmental remediation and contribute to understanding the function and role of microorganisms in immobilizing heavy metals at the mineral interface.

Effects of Solid Precipitation and Surface Corrosion on the Adhesion Strengths of Sintered Hydrate Deposits on Pipe Walls

Chenwei Liu,Xu Zeng,Ci Yan,Chenru Zhou,Mingzhong Li,Zhiyuan Wang

A hydrate directly growing and sintering on a pipe wall is an important hydrate deposition case that has been relatively unexplored. In the present study, the adhesion strengths of a sintered cyclopentane (CyC5) hydrate deposit under different solid precipitation and surface corrosion conditions were measured and discussed. It was found that the hydrate adhesion strengths increased by 1.2–1.5× when the soaking time of the carbon steel substrate in a 5 wt % NaCl solution increased from 24 to 72 h, which reduced the water wetting angle from 112 ± 3.5° to 94 ± 3.3°. The wax coating reduced the strength of CyC5 hydrate adhesion by up to nearly 20-fold by reversing the substrate wettability and affecting the hydrate morphology. The measurements performed on scales indicate that calcium carbonate scales strengthen the adhesion strength because of the decrease in the water wetting angle. In addition, honeycomb holes on the surface reduce amplification. Furthermore, settling quartz sand on the wall reduced the adhesion strengths by decreasing the effective sintering area of the hydrate on the underlying base. Finer sand and higher concentrations led to lower strengths. On the basis of the verified linear correlation between the hydrate adhesion strength and the adhesion work of droplets on different substrates and the influence of water conversion during deposition, both an equation and a key constant parameter were obtained to predict the sintered hydrate deposit adhesion strengths on substrates.

In Situ Visualization on Surface Oxidative Corrosion with Free Radicals: Black Phosphorus Nanoflake as an Example

Meirong Li,Chengliang Mao,Lan Ling

Free radicals exert a significant impact on the fate of redox-active substances and play a crucial role in the surface corrosion of solid in environment. Dynamic visualization on the response of the surface to the free radicals at nanoscale is essential to explore the mechanism. Environmental transmission electron microscopy will be a powerful tool for dynamic changes of the interface redox process of solid surface with electron beams induced free radicals, to simulate the redox process of a solid in the environment. Black phosphorus (BP), an environment-sensitive material, is selected as an example to visualize the degradation pathways with environmental transmission electron microscopy. The distribution of the corrosion initiation points, formation and growth of corrosion areas, and the eventual splintering and disappearance of BP nanoflakes are recorded vividly. In situ results are substantiated by the ex situ experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results show that degradation originates at the edges and defect structures when the humidity reaches high enough. The microscopic structural oxidative etching of solid surface with radicals in natural light is simulated with radicals produced by electron beam irradiation on suspending medium O2 and H2O for the first time. This method will offer unprecedented details and valuable insights into the mechanism involved in the oxidative etching with natural light.

Effect of soil pH on thermally enhanced desorption of m-xylene by zero-valent iron particles under an electromagnetic field

Kai Yu,Xiuqiong Yang,Mao Wan,Haowen Jiang,Penghui Shao,Liming Yang,Hui Shi,Xubiao Luo

This study, for the first time, evaluates a novel method for the desorption of contaminants from soil that uses the heat generated by zero-valent iron (ZVI) under low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF), and elucidates the specific effects of soil pH upon the process. It was found that the temperature of soil mixed with ZVI could reach up to ∼60 °C within 20 min under the applied EMF, and after 60 min the residual fraction of m-xylene in soil decreased by 86.4% compared to no-ZVI soil. The most efficient desorption of m-xylene occurred at a soil of pH 5. Desorption was related to the net heating capacity of the ZVI particles, which was defined by pH-dependent formation of surface corrosion products. The preservation of metal iron and formation of Fe(II) species was favored for heat generation. Soil pH also affected m-xylene retention and the local thermal conduction from ZVI to m-xylene by regulating the surface properties of fulvic acid and ZVI. This study provides valuable information regarding the impact of pH on the thermal desorption of soil contaminants by ZVI coupled with EMF and illustrates the potential of the method in the remediation of contaminated sites.

Direct Growth of a Polymer Film to Induce Horizontal Orientation of Zn4(OH)6SO4·xH2O for Stable Zn Metal Batteries

Yaxin Wang,Xuelong Liao,Wei Wang,Shan Chen,Jialei Chen,Huan Wang

The loose and randomly oriented byproduct (i.e., Zn4(OH)6SO4·xH2O, ZHS) in situ formed on the zinc (Zn) surface is recognized to be the primary cause for dendritic Zn growth and side reactions. Switching the detrimental passivation film into a dense and kinetically favorable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a straightforward strategy to tackle these issues faced by Zn metal anodes but remains largely unexplored. Herein, a new polymer film directly grown on Zn metal through room-temperature plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition is proposed to induce the lateral growth of ZHS nanosheets and decrease the Zn2+ desolvation barrier, thereby forming a beneficial composite SEI for suppressing Zn dendrite growth and surface corrosion. As a result of the joint effect, we realize an impressively stable cycling behavior in symmetric cell over 3400 h at 2 mA cm–2. Moreover, full cells also demonstrate prolonged lifespans. This work opens a new avenue for stabilizing Zn metal batteries by turning detrimental ZHS into a favorable interlayer.

Proton-driven bilateral interfacial chemistry and electrolyte structure reconstruction enable highly reversible zinc metal anodes

Chang Liu,Dan Xie,Wen-Bin Jiang,Wan-Yue Diao,Fang-Yu Tao,Xin-Zhe Wang,Hai-Zhu Sun,Wen-Liang Li,Xing-Long Wu,Jing-Ping Zhang

Uncontrolled dendrite growth, severe parasitic reactions on the Zn metal anode (ZMA), and the dissolution of cathode active materials have significantly limited the development of aqueous zinc ion batteries . Herein, 3-(Cyclohexylamino)-1-propanesulfonic acid (CAPS) featured with zwitterion as a multifunctional additive is introduced into the 2 M ZnSO 4 aqueous electrolyte to simultaneously regulate the interfacial chemistry of the Zn anode and the cathode, as well as the solvated structure of Zn 2+ , thereby improving the interfacial and structural stability of both electrodes. Thereinto, the preferentially adsorbed CAPS zwitterion onto the ZMA surface favors for constructing a cationic protective layer originated from the electrostatic shielding effect of the cationic group (>NH 2 + ), inhibiting the growth of dendrites. Meanwhile, the CAPS zwitterion can self-regulate the bilateral interfacial pH by forming the conjugate acid-base pair, suppressing hydrogen evolution reaction and Zn anode surface corrosion . Additionally, the CAPS zwitterion alters the solvated structure of Zn 2+ , weakening H 2 O molecule activity and reducing the dissolution of vanadium element from cathode. Consequently, the Zn||Zn symmetric cells harvest excellent cycling stability (1 mA cm −2 , 1 mAh cm −2 , 2300 h), and the Zn||Cu asymmetric cells display a high average Coulombic Efficiency of 99.7 % after 1600 cycles in the ZnSO 4 +CAPS electrolyte.
