Inspired by the Bouligand structure in nature, a kind of Inverse-Bouligand structure was designed. Different from the bionic Bouligand structure of a one-dimensional material unit, the inverse-Bouligand structure is obtained by stacking and twisting the ceramic layer with a parallel groove structure. The grooves arranged in parallel are first etched on the ceramic green body and then sintered after stacking and twisting. After sintering, the groove structure can still be maintained, so the resulting laminated twisted groove structure in the bulk forms an inverse-Bouligand structure, which can promote crack deflection and improve the toughness of the material during the fracture process. After testing different twist angles, the results show that when the twist angle is 15°, the toughness of the material can reach 11.22 ± 1.77 MPa m 1/2 , and high strength can be guaranteed. The synergistic effect of interlayer crack deflection and regional crack twist is the main mechanism for the improvement of material toughness.

Graphene is one of the important candidates in ceramic toughening due to its outstanding physical and chemical properties. For the weak interface toughening of large-diameter graphene sheet and alleviation of the interfacial reaction between ceramic precursors and graphene sheets during high-temperature pyrolysis, ZrC–SiC‒Graphene composite was synthesized via a facile technology of infiltrating ceramic slurry instead of ceramic precursor into macroporous graphene network and spark plasma sintering . The incorporation of the graphene network improved fracture toughness, critical crack size, and fracture energy of ZrC–SiC ceramic. The multiple length-scale toughening mechanisms of ZrC–SiC‒Graphene composite include the macroscopic toughening mechanism of crack deflection and bifurcation and the micro toughening mechanism of graphene bridging, ceramic micro zone tearing, graphene pull-out, graphene and ceramic brick slipping.

While graphene is widely acknowledged for its potential in enhancing the toughness of ceramic composites, achieving substantial mechanical improvements through simple and scalable processing methods remains a challenge. This study demonstrates that minimal additions of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) can significantly enhance the fracture toughness of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics using pressureless sintering. The investigation focused on examining the influence of GNPs addition on the phase composition, porosity, mechanical properties, and microstructure of these composite ceramic materials. By incorporating only 1–3 wt.% GNPs into an α-SiC matrix, a remarkable 37.86% increase in fracture toughness (5.28 MPa·m1/2) is achieved at the optimal loading of 1 wt.%, surpassing the toughening efficiency typically reported for similar composite systems. Microstructural analysis revealed that the primary toughening mechanisms of GNPs in SiC involve pull-out and crack deflection. This study demonstrates GNPs combined with pressureless sintering can effectively unlock the toughness potential of SiC ceramics, providing a practical and scalable approach for industrial applications.

The strategy of interlaminar toughening shows tremendous potential in addressing delamination failure in glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites. In contrast to commonly used particulate or nanofibrous interleaves, mesh structures feature a more continuous and uniform architecture, which confers notable benefits in terms of scalability. Despite this potential, there is currently a lack of systematic studies on the role of mesh structures in interlaminar toughening. Therefore, this study investigates the interlaminar toughening behavior of polyamide (PA) mesh, known for its excellent mechanical properties, as an interlayer in GFRP, focusing on the effects of different mesh densities and thicknesses. Through different fracture tests and failure analyses, the correlation between mode I/II fracture behaviors and characteristic parameters of PA6 mesh was elucidated. The results indicate that by introducing the PA6 mesh, the mode I and mode II fracture toughness can be improved by 109% and 69%, respectively. This enhancement is attributed to the structural toughening effect of the PA mesh, including PA fiber bridging, plastic deformation, and fracture, as well as its ability to induce controlled crack deflection and guidance. Upon analysis, the primary factor influencing the toughening efficiency of the PA mesh is the mesh porosity. Only within an appropriate porosity range (20% ~ 60%) can the interlaminar toughening effect of the PA mesh be activated. Under this premise, thickness, as the secondary dominant factor, has a positive regulatory effect on the interlaminar fracture toughness of the PA intercalated laminates.

Bidirectional freeze casting combined with pressure infiltration has demonstrated significant potential as an effective approach for fabricating bioinspired lamellar composites with excellent strength and toughness. However, their dynamic mechanical response remains underexplored. In this study, B 4 C/2024Al composites with long-range ordered nacre-like architectures were fabricated using bidirectional freeze casting followed by pressure infiltration. The mechanical properties and deformation behavior under both quasi-static and dynamic compression conditions were systematically investigated. The results reveal that dynamic compressive strength and strain were significantly higher than their quasi-static counterparts, largely attributed to strain rate hardening and localized matrix melting. Compared to unidirectionally structured composites, the bidirectionally structured ones exhibited superior mechanical performance, achieving a maximum compressive strength of 1088.6 MPa at a strain rate of 3000 s −1 (40 vol% B 4 C/2024Al composite). A clear dependence of flow stress and energy absorption capability on B 4 C volume fraction was observed. As B 4 C content increased, the compressive strength rose, but dynamic strain energy density showed a decreasing trend beyond 20 vol% due to reduced ductility. Specifically, the energy density peaked at 133.08 MJ/m 3 for the 20 vol% composite and declined with further ceramic addition, indicating a trade-off between strength and impact energy absorption. The enhanced toughness under dynamic loading is primarily attributed to adiabatic shear localization in the aluminum matrix, which facilitates localized softening and strain accommodation. Additional contributions include crack deflection and branching within the hard ceramic layers, as well as plastic deformation and thermal softening-induced toughening mechanisms in the metallic phase. These findings highlight the promise of nacre-inspired B 4 C/Al composites for advanced lightweight armor systems, offering an optimized balance between strength, toughness, and energy absorption under high-strain-rate loading.

Although axially aligned fibrous monolithic ceramics have superior mechanical properties in ceramic fiber axial direction, the obvious anisotropy in physical and chemical properties of fibrous monolithic ceramics predetermine the significant on-axis and off-axis discrepancy. The existing ZrB 2 -based fibrous monolithic ceramics were all arranged by axially aligned ceramic fibers. Non-axially aligned ZrB 2 -SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-graphene short fibrous monolithic ceramics with isotropic in-plane properties were fabricated by hot pressing of disorderly-arranged short ZrB 2 -SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-graphene fibers to overcome in-plane anisotropy of the ZrB 2 -based fibrous monolithic ceramics. ZrB 2 -SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-graphene short fibrous monolithic ceramics have remarkable increase in fracture toughness, critical crack size and work of fracture compared with ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics. The toughening mechanism of ZrB 2 -SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-graphene short fibrous monolithic ceramics include macroscopic toughening of crack deflection, crack branching, interface friction and ZrB 2 -SiC cell extraction, and microscopic toughening of graphene bridging and pull-out.

In this study, through a targeted experimental approach, polyethersulfone/carbon nanotubes (PES/CNTs) films with variable carbon nanotubes (CNTs) contents were fabricated by the phase inversion approach and employed in carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites prepared by the vacuum-assisted resin infusion process to upgrade the toughness of composites. The dissolution of the PES/CNTs films in the epoxy resin was revealed to be controllable, which guaranteed a gradient distribution of polyethersulfone and CNTs between the layers. As observed, the CF/EP composites with PES/CNTs films containing 0.5 phr CNTs provided the optimized mode I fracture toughness with a 120.4% increase in G IC compared to the reference. Whereas, the G IIC of the composites with PES/CNTs film containing 1.0 phr CNTs was increased by 92.5%. Additionally, observation of the fracture surfaces of mode I and mode II specimens by scanning electron microscopy revealed that PES/CNTs films toughened CF/EP composites via three mechanisms: i) crack deflection and secondary microcracks initiation caused by polyethersulfone microspheres, ii) cracks bridging effect and pull-out from the epoxy matrix of CNTs and iii) CNTs distributed between epoxy matrix and polyethersulfone microsphere led to more energy consumption, which had a synergistic effect. This method overcomes the trade-off between toughness and stiffness in traditional interleaving methods, providing a new approach for the manufacturing of high-performance CF/EP composites.
