Traditional hard asphalt, due to its low cost and excellent mechanical properties, is considered a favorable material for resisting permanent deformation under high-temperature conditions. However, its limited stress relaxation ability at medium and low temperatures significantly impairs its capacity to meet the cracking resistance requirements. To address the limitation, this study synthesized three green and sustainable bio-renewable additives derived from high oleic rapeseed oil. These additives aimed to improve the performance of hard asphalt at medium- and low-temperature conditions, thereby broadening its potential for application in green and low-carbon construction practices. Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) tests were conducted to determine the critical low-temperature difference (ΔT c ) to evaluate the thermal cracking resistance of bio-modified hard asphalt. The effects of the bio-additives on fatigue cracking resistance of hard asphalt were investigated using rheological indices, crossover frequencies, Glover-Rowe (G-R) parameters, and Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) tests. The results indicated that bio-additives effectively alleviated the stress in hard asphalt and reduced the asphalt’s susceptibility to thermal cracking by improving the flexibility and stress relaxation of the hard asphalt at low temperatures. Furthermore, the bio-additives substantially improved the ductility and toughness of hard asphalt at intermediate temperatures by lowering its strain sensitivity and increasing its fatigue cracking resistance. Additionally, the high oleic rapeseed oil-based derivatives notably reduced hard asphalt binder’s cracking induced by aging. Among the three bio-additives, acrylated epoxidized high oleic rapeseed oil (AEHORO) and epoxidized high oleic rapeseed oil (EHORO) were noticed to exhibit the most significant improvements in thermal cracking resistance and anti-aging properties, demonstrating superior load-bearing capacity at low temperatures. Overall, the developed bio-additives significantly improved both the thermal cracking and fatigue damage resistance of traditional hard asphalt, thus expanding its applications in pavements for various regions.

During the operation of hydraulic fracturing as used in many geo-energy and geo-environment applications, chemical stimulation is often incorporated for cracking enhancement in low-permeability geological formations for the purpose of an optimization of energy recovery. The mechanism of subcritical crack propagation in a chemically reactive environment is essential for understanding of the involved coupled chemo-mechanical process and a better control of acid-assisted hydraulic fracturing. It has been postulated that the rate of crack propagation under environmental loads is inherited from the chemical processes involved including the reaction and the diffusive transport. However, laboratory explorations focusing on the evolving interplay between the propagation of a fluid-pressurizing individual crack and the environment it is subject to via a variable chemical intensity imposed have been rare. Here we present an experimental investigation on a single tensile crack propagation in alginate hydrogel as an analogue material for brittle rocks, driven by the injection of a chemically reactive fluid kept at constant pressure using a Hele-Shaw cell setup. We show that an intensified chemical environment can accelerate tensile crack propagation in both subcritical crack growth and fracturing regimes, while leading to the Region III fracturing of less brittle characteristics. During the experiment, crack-tip blunting upon injection of reactive solutions was observed, suggesting a competing mechanism between the crack-tip geometry induced toughening and the chemically induced softening within the process zone as the crack advances. Our results provide quantitative insights into how a chemically reactive environment facilitates the growth of a single macroscopic crack of mode I opening in a low-permeability matrix through coupled chemo-mechanical feedback. The imposed chemical environment promotes crack propagation while alleviating the stress concentration at the advancing crack tip, suggesting a more energy-efficient method compared to pure water fracturing. We anticipate our experimental investigation presented here to be a starting point of sound laboratory support for future studies towards a more controllable technique of chemical stimulation in geomaterials as well as complementing the ongoing modeling efforts in reactive chemo-mechanics.

To minimize pores or voids that left after electro-healing by plain solution without additives, controllable electro-healing was investigated in pure Ni plates with a through-thickness crack in a Watts bath by adding polyethyleneimine (PEI) and saccharin. Controllable electro-healing means that the growth velocity of healing crystals from crack tips is much faster than that from sidewalls of the crack, which reduces the number of pores owing to depletion of healing solution. Rotating disk electrode (RDE) was introduced to evaluate the electrochemical behavior in crack tips and crack center. Voltammograms and galvanostatic measurements indicated that PEI exhibits a convection-dependent inhibition effect on Ni deposition. The addition of saccharin will much enhance the inhibition behavior of PEI, controllable electro-healing was achieved with the presence of both PEI and saccharin.

Traditional granular hydrogels showed excellent injectivity, thermal integrity, and efficient remediation of heterogeneous reservoirs. However, granular hydrogels have demonstrated their inability to adapt to fractures due to the lack of sufficient interactions. Herein, we present new nanocomposite hydrogels consisting of cationic nanogelators and anionic granular hydrogels that can chemically in situ reform bulk hydrogels in the fractures. Interestingly, our granular hydrogels showed recross-linking independence on carrying fluids, contrary to prior reported fluid-dependent recross-linking granular hydrogels. The recross-linking of nanogelators and granular hydrogels can be accomplished from room temperature to 130 °C. The nanocomposite hydrogels displayed increased shear elastic moduli compared to pristine anionic granular hydrogels, probably due to the increased covalent cross-links formed by the homogeneous regenerative approach. We found that the granular hydrogels had high salinity tolerance even in the presence of 1000 ppm divalent ions of calcium (Ca2+) since Ca2+ ions often act as the cross-linker for partially hydrolyzed acrylamide-based hydrogels. Overall, we obtained new regenerative nanocomposite hydrogels based on cationic nanogelators and anionic granular hydrogels for fracture treatments.

The development of micro cracks in shale formations can easily lead to wellbore instability caused by liquid phase invasion. In order to effectively seal the shale micropores, the surface treatment of nano-SiO2particles was developed using the silicane coupling agent A-1891. Then, the temperature-sensitive polypenic acrylamide polymer was modified onto the surface of the nanoprocal particle through reaction to obtain the nanosomal blocking agent ASN. The infrared spectrum shows that there are chemical bonds between the generated polymer chains, rather than simple physical composites, indicating the successful synthesis of the temperature-responsive nanosealing agent ASN. The particle size analysis showed that the synthesized nanoparticles in ASN have a uniform particle size distribution and display no agglomeration phenomenon. Applying ASN as a sealing agent in drilling fluid effectively fills the nanoscale micropores and microcracks in shale, making shale denser and significantly improving the wellbore stability of shale formations. In addition, it has good temperature resistance, can adapt to reservoirs at different temperatures, is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, and has good prospects for stable applications in shale formation wellbore.

The matrix/fracture conductivity of a fractured low-permeability reservoir is variable, and its heterogeneity is serious. When carrying out deep profile control measures, it is difficult to inject under the premise of ensuring the plugging effect. According to the characteristics of the fractured low-permeability reservoir in Chaoyanggou Oilfield, the polymer/chromium ion deep profile control system was optimized via a viscosity evaluation experiment, liquidity experiment and oil displacement experiment. The experimental results show that the high molecular weight main agent/low concentration system and low molecular weight main agent/high concentration system can meet the gel strength requirement. The evaluation results of the injection ability and plugging performance of the fractured low-permeability core show that a high molecular weight profile control system is difficult to inject, while a low molecular weight profile control system has a poor plugging performance and high cost after simulated shear. Therefore, the formulation of the profile control system was determined to be a polymer with a molecular weight of 16 million g·mol−1as the main agent with a concentration of 1000–1500 mg·L−1. As assisting agents, the concentrations of thiourea, NaCl and NaHCO3were 900 mg·L−1, 800 mg·L−1and 700 mg·L−1, respectively. The plugging rate of the system was 87.6%, and the resistance coefficient was 19.2. Finally, a fractured low-permeability core model with parallel long cores was designed, and the optimal profile control system was used for the core oil-displacement experiment. Compared with the water-flooding experiment, the plugging rate can be increased by 6.9–8.0%.Keywords:fractured low-permeability reservoirs;polymer/chromium-ion;deep profile control system

Aiming at the lack of plugging agent for oil-based drilling fluid leakage in fractured formation, an oil-based gel-plugging agent with high structural strength and strong thermal stability was synthesized based on monomer polymerization and crosslinking. According to the preparation experiment, when the total concentration of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) is 30% and the ratio is 6:4, the oil-based gel solution can be completely gelatinized from 80 to 200°C, which has high gel strength and controllable gelation time. The effects of total concentration of BA and MMA, the ratio of BA and MMA, synthesis temperature, oil-based drilling fluid invasion, shear effect, and fiber concentration on gelling performance were systematically studied. Fourier transform infrared molecular structure analysis showed that the oil-based gel contained benzene ring group and ester characteristic group. From the rheological properties of oil-based gel with 30% gelling agent at 160°C, it could be seen that the elastic modulus G ′ of 10 Hz is 232 kPa, which is much larger than the storage modulus G ″ is 99 kPa, which reflects the solid properties and has good elasticity and high strength. The displacement experiment of sand filling pipe and dynamic and static plugging experiment of high temperature and high pressure shows that the oil-based gel has high bearing capacity in fractures and sand filling pipe. The bearing pressure is 3.01 MPa in 6 mm fractures, and the bearing pressure gradient is 0.602 MPa/cm.

Cracks in underground rock masses cause gas leakage, seepage, and water inflow. To realize calcium carbonate deposition and mineralization filling in rock cracks, microencapsulated bacterial spores were prepared by an oil phase separation method. To optimize the microorganism growth conditions, the effects of microcapsules with various pHs, particle sizes, and amounts on microcrack self-healing were investigated through an orthogonal test, and the best conditions for repairing the cracks using microencapsulated Bacillus sphaericus were obtained. Infrared analysis and scanning electron microscopy were used to observe the morphological characteristics and coating performance of the microcapsules. The results showed that the microcapsules contained functional groups in the core and wall materials. The surfaces of the microcapsules prepared by the test were rough, which was beneficial for adhesion onto the fracture surface. X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were conducted. The results showed that the microcapsules with pH = 8 and a particle size of 100 μm had the highest thermal decomposition temperature and the best thermal stability. The elements of the core and wall materials were detected in the microcapsules, and the coating had a beneficial effect. The compression and acoustic emission tests of the specimens embedding microbial capsules with different contents under different working conditions revealed that the two fractures of the specimen were due to the rupture of the microcapsule and the rupture of the rock specimen, indicating the best mechanical triggering properties and compressive properties of the microcapsule.

Shale reservoirs typically exhibit high density, necessitating the use of horizontal wells and hydraulic fracturing techniques for efficient extraction. Proppants are commonly employed in hydraulic fracturing to prevent crack closure. However, limited research has been conducted on the impact of shale mineral composition and proppant filling patterns on shale stress sensitivity. In this study, shale cylindrical core samples from two different lithologies in Jimusaer, Xinjiang in China were selected. The mineral composition and microscopic structures were tested, and a self-designed stress sensitivity testing system was employed to conduct stress sensitivity tests on natural cores and fractured cores with different proppant filling patterns. The experimental results indicate that the stress sensitivity of natural shale porous cores is weaker, with a stress sensitivity coefficient below 0.03, significantly lower than that of fractured cores. The shale mineral composition has a significant impact on stress sensitivity, with the stress sensitivity of clayey argillaceous shale cores, characterized by higher clay mineral content, being higher than that of sandy argillaceous shale, characterized by higher quartz mineral content. This pattern is also applicable to fractured cores filled with proppants, but the difference gradually diminishes with increased proppant concentration. The choice of large particles and high-concentration proppant bedding can enhance crack conductivity. Within the experimental range, the crack conductivity of 20–40 mesh quartz sand is more than three times that of 70–120 mesh quartz sand. At an effective stress of 60 MPa, the conductivity of cores with a proppant concentration of 2 kg/m2is 3.61 times that of cores with a proppant concentration of 0.3 kg/m2. Under different particle size combinations of proppant filling patterns, the crack conductivity at the crack front with large-particle proppants is 6.21 times that of mixed bedding. This study provides valuable insights for the hydraulic fracturing design of shale reservoirs and optimization of production system parameters in subsequent stages.

The rapid freeze–thaw test about ordinary Portland cement concrete (PCC) was performed in the deicers of water, 3.5% ethylene glycol, 3.5% NaCl and 3.5% calcium magnesium acetate (CMA). The ice pressure ( I p ) of deicer was tested, and the concept of the ice pressure impulse ( IPI ) was proposed. A crack density model was employed to describe the freeze–thaw damage process of concrete. Results indicated that the freeze–thaw damage of PCC in CMA deicer was the mildest. The I p value of water was the highest but its IPI value was the lowest. The freeze–thaw microcracks inside concrete was induced by the I p of deicer restrained in concrete pores. The freeze–thaw crack density decreased with the relative depth of specimen. The value of superficial critical crack density was 0.85 ∼ 0.88, when the exterior mortar of concrete began spalling. The value of central critical crack density was 0.32 ∼ 0.34, when the interior freeze–thaw failure of concrete occurred.

Inverse opal of molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogels (MIPHs) represents an important colorimetric sensing platform, where the order and connectivity of inverse-opal structure is critical. However, MIPHs constructed by conventional approaches generally bear many cracks and merely presents order in short range. Herein, we report a facile approach to overcome these challenges by integrating evaporative co-deposition of colloids suspended within a hydrogel precursor and polymerization of monomers in single step. Co-deposition of colloids, imprinted molecules, and polymeric monomers as well as concurrent polymerization is firstly studied in detail. As-prepared inverse opal of MIPHs presents high order in long range and almost no crack. Different parameters affecting sensing performance were optimized in detail. MIPHs present high selectivity, sensitivity, and rapid response due to highly ordered inverse-opal structure and molecular recognition sites which are situated either at surface or in proximity to surface. Additionally, a mathematic relationship between Bragg diffraction wavelength shift of MIPHs and analyte concentration is proposed, enabling that MIPHs can not only be used in qualitative detection by visually perceptible color, but could quantitatively infer analyte concentration based on fitted equation. This work would provide an important inspiration for future construction of molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogels.

In fractured reservoirs, fractures serve as both water channeling and oil flow channels. Because of the impact of bottom water coning, the water channeling phenomenon becomes more problematic in the middle and late stages of reservoir development. Furthermore, residual oil is limited to small-scale fractures. In multi-scale fractures, the conventional pressure-bearing pattern of plugging agents is ambiguous. This results in low oil recovery, low sweep efficiency from water flooding, and low plugging agent application efficiency. Until now, the pressure-bearing patterns related to gel strength in multi-scale fractures have not been clear. In this paper, the gelation performances of temperature-resistant gel (TRG) samples with different elastic moduli were investigated. The elastic modulus of the TRG was normalized by the elastic modulus (G′) and viscosity modulus (G″). Subsequently, we carried out research on the bottom water pressure patterns of TRGs. This study revealed the pressure-bearing patterns of the TRGs under multi-scale fractures. A corresponding influence pattern chart was established, and the optimal surface function was fitted using the MATLAB nonlinear surface data fitting method. Finally, an application experiment for the characteristic chart was carried out. The plugging rate was evaluated based on the permeability reduction and pressure differential across the core samples before and after gel injection. Subsequently, a TRG with certain elastic moduli before and after plugging the core fracture node was selected from the chart. The elastic modulus of the TRG at the injection node prior to plugging was 14.29 Pa. The elastic modulus of the TRG at the injection node after plugging was 19.42 Pa. The experimental results showed that the TRG with an elastic modulus of 19.42 Pa effectively plugged the fractures and remained stable for over 90 days under a pressure differential of 53 KPa, resulting in a 58.7% improvement in oil recovery compared with water flooding. However, it was difficult for the TRG with an elastic modulus of 14.29 Pa to plug fractures efficiently, and it only enhanced the oil recovery by 15.2%. The primary aim of this work was to establish a quantitative and normalized evaluation method for temperature-resistant gels (TRGs) used in fractured reservoirs. By introducing a classification system based on the elastic modulus (G′) and correlating it with the fracture scale and plugging performance, this study bridges the gap between laboratory gel evaluations and field applications. The results provide practical design criteria and contribute to improving the efficiency and adaptability of gel plugging strategies under harsh reservoir conditions.
