Ion-solvating membranes have been gaining increasing attention as core components of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. However, the development of ion-solvating membranes with low ion resistance and high ion selectivity still poses challenges. In order to propose an effective strategy for high-performance ion-solvating membranes, this study conducted a comprehensive investigation on watermelon skin membranes through a combination of experimental research and molecular dynamics simulation. The micropores and continuous hydrogen-bonding networks constructed by the synergistic effect of cellulose fiber and pectin enable the hypodermis of watermelon skin membranes to have a high ion conductivity of 282.3 mS cm −1 (room temperature, saturated with 1 M KOH). The negatively charged groups and hydroxyl groups on the microporous channels increase the formate penetration resistance of watermelon skin membranes in contrast to commercially available membranes, and this is crucial for CO 2 electroreduction. Therefore, the confinement of proton donors and negatively charged groups within three-dimensional microporous polymers gives inspiration for the design of high-performance ion-solvating membranes.

The objective of this study was to make a film matrix containing chitosan (CS) and guar gum (GG), and to improve the physicochemical properties of the film using watermelon rind extract (WRE) as a cross-linker and active substance for the preservation of fresh-cut bananas. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy showed that the WRE and CG matrix formed intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions, which made the structure of the resulting films more compact. With increasing amounts of WRE, the mechanical properties of the films were significantly increased, but the permeability of water vapor and oxygen was significantly decreased ( p < 0.05). Notably, when the amount of extract reached 4 wt%, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of the composite film significantly increased to 83.24 %, and the antibacterial activity also reached its highest value. Fresh-cut bananas were stored at room temperature with polyethylene film, CG and CG-WRE. The CG with 4 wt% WRE effectively inhibited the changes in appearance, firmness, weight, color and total soluble solids content of fresh-cut bananas during storage. Therefore, CG-WRE as a novel active food packaging material, has good physicochemical properties and great potential to extend the shelf life of foods.

In this investigation, we have effectively extracted and characterized a new Exocarpium Citrulli polysaccharide (ECP-2) with a molecular weight of 1.67 × 10 6 Da using hot water extraction and ethanol precipitation techniques. Analysis was performed using high performance gel permeation chromatography, ion chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and scanning electron microscopy. ECP-2 is primarily composed of galactose (32.32 %), arabinose (25.42 %), and mannose (19.75 %). Fuc, Rha, Ara, Gal, Glc, Man, and GalA molar ratios in ECP-2 is 4.65:1.50:25.42:32.32:5.78:19.75:10.57. Based on structural studies, the primary sugar residues of ECP-2 are T-α-L-Ara f -(1→, →5)-α-L-Ara f -(1→, T-α-D-Man p -(1→ and →3,6)-β-D-Gal p -(1→. Furthermore, the anti-aging effect of ECP-2 in D-galactose model mice, while the results indicate that ECP-2 significantly enhances the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase in D-galactose model control mice. Additionally, ECP-2 effectively eliminated the lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde, thereby restoring normal growth of the mice by regulating their defense mechanism. In conclusion, the polysaccharides of Exocarpium Citrulli , particularly ECP-2, may be appropriate for use in natural medicines and functional foods to halt or slow the aging process.
