Fabricating shape-memory materials from natural macromolecules has gained popularity to facilitate the development of bio-friendly smart materials and devices. However, current biobased shape-memory materials have shortcomings, including insufficient mechanical properties and low shape recovery rate in their real applications. Herein, this work aims to develop hierarchically structured keratin-based fibers with high strength and shape-memory properties in response to hydration. The gold nanoparticle is adopted for enhancement in the keratin system, and a well-aligned anisotropic structure with α-helix to the fiber axis is established in the regenerated keratin fibers by wet spinning. The strong crosslinking effect from Au S bonding endows the keratin fibers with outstanding shape-memory performance, exhibiting a shape fixity of ~92 % and a near-full shape recovery rate of ~96 %. In this system, the transition between α and β conformation under external force and water stimulation is assigned as the fundamental mechanism in response to hydration. In hydration and dehydration, the hydrogen bonds act as ‘switches’ that enable deformation, while the strong Au S bonds are ‘net points’ to maintain the original and temporary shapes. This strategy can promote metal nanomaterial anchoring as a methodology for fabricating shape-memory protein-based fibers with excellent mechanical properties and shape-memory performance.

As a biomass regeneration fiber, down keratin fibers (DF) have received wide attention in the field of adsorbents due to its physicochemical properties such as abundant hydroxyl groups, amino groups and other functional groups, light weight and high specific surface area. In this study, tannin-modified down keratin fibers (DF-CT) were prepared by covalent cross-linking of bayberry extract and DF. The phenolic hydroxyl groups in DF-CT can form a multifunctional supramolecular self-assembled metal-phenolic network (MPN) structure with uranium, endowing DF-CT with excellent adsorption performance. The static and dynamic adsorption experiments show that DF-CT has a fast adsorption rate and a high adsorption capacity (219 ± 20 mg/g) at 8 ppm uranium solution. In natural seawater, DF-CT also represents high adsorption capacity (4.43 mg/g) within 30 days. In addition, DF-CT has a high adsorption selectivity, recyclability and antibacterial properties. DF-CT has a degradation rate of 86.3 % in the natural environment, showcasing good biodegradability. Therefore, the all-biomass based DF-CT adsorbent cannot cause secondary pollution to the environment after disposal. This study provides a new idea for the development of new and efficient multifunctional adsorbents for sustainable uranium extraction from seawater.

Regenerated wool keratin fibers (RWKFs) have heretofore attracted tremendous interest according to environmental friendliness, ample resource, and intrinsic biocompatibility for broad applications. In this realm, both uncontrollable keratin fibril assembly procedure and resultant insufficient mechanical strength, have greatly hindered their large-scale manufacture and commercial viability. Herein, a continuous wet-spinning strategy is put forward to rebuild wool keratin into compact regenerated bio-fibers with improved strength via disulfide re-bonding. Dithiothreitol (DTT) has been introduced to renovate disulfide linkage inside keratin polypeptide chains, and bridge keratin fibrils via covalent thiol bonding to form a continuous backbone as mechanical support. A thus-derived RWKF manifests a tensile strength of 186.1 ± 7.0 MPa and Young's modulus of 7.4 ± 0.2 GPa, which exceeds those of natural wool, feathers, and regenerated wool or feather keratin fibers. The detailed wet-spinning technical parameters, such as coagulation, oxidation, and post-treatment, have been systematically optimized to guarantee the continuous preparation of high-strength regenerated keratin fibers. This work offers insight into solving the concurrent challenges for continuous manufacture of regenerated protein fibers and sustainability concerns about biomass waste.

Biocompatible and biodegradable shape-memory polymers have gained popularity as smart materials, offering a wide range of applications and environmental benefits. Herein, the possibility of fabricating regenerated water-triggered shape-memory keratin fibers from wool and cellulose in a more effective and environmentally friendly manner is investigated. The regenerated keratin fibers exhibit comparable shape-memory performance to other hydration-responsive materials, with a shape-fixity ratio of 94.8 ± 2.15% and a shape-recovery rate of 81.4 ± 3.84%. Owing to their well-preserved secondary structure and cross-linking network, keratin fibers exhibit outstanding water-stability and wet stretchability, with a maximum tensile strain of 362 ± 15.9%. In this system, the reconfiguration of the protein secondary structure between α-helix and β-sheet is investigated as the fundamental actuation mechanism in response to hydration. This responsiveness is studied under force loading and unloading along the fiber axis. Hydrogen bonds act as the “switches” clicked by water molecules to trigger the shape-memory effect, while disulfide bonds and cellulose nanocrystals play the role of “net-points” to maintain the permanent shape of the material. Water-triggered shape-memory keratin fibers are manipulable and exhibit potential in the fabrication of textile actuators, which may be applied in smart apparel and programmable biomedical devices.

Elastic materials based on biomass fiber reinforced natural rubber (NR) composites featured by renewability, environmental friendliness, and outstanding toughness have attracted intensive attention. However, the improvement in tensile strength via natural fiber reinforcement is always accompanied by the compromise in toughness, which is rooted in the notoriously weak interfacial bonding originating from the significant mismatch in surface energies between constituent materials. In this work, we for the first time present a facile route to realize the interfacial activation of keratin fibers (KFs) derived from leather solid waste as well as the preparation of NR/KF composite with dual excellence in tensile strength and toughness via mechanochemistry. The activated thiol groups generated by mechanochemical pulverization promote the dispersion and in-situ compatibilization of KFs in rubber matrix , thereby facilitating effective interfacial stress transfer and enhancing the mechanical performance of the composites. As a result, the tensile strength, elongation, and toughness at break of composite elastomer reach 19.4 MPa, 781.0%, and 48.8 MJ/m 3 , respectively, outperforming the state-of-the-art natural fiber reinforced NR composites. Moreover, the incorporation of mechanochemical-pulverized KFs into NR matrix offers heterogeneous nucleation locales, facilitating the foaming of NR in supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO 2 ). The cell wall of the composite is in turn reinforced, and the resultant foam manages to deliver an excellent compressive recovery rate of 99.4% even after 200 cycles that outstrips those of reported foams. This work highlights a facile and green route to turn waste bovine hair in leather industry into high-performance bio-based elastomer and super-elastic foam.

The full utilization of discarded wool for the preparation of continuous recycled keratin fibers has been a challenging subject. The key issue lies in how to utilize wool keratin as much as possible without damaging the main chain structure of the protein molecules. Based on small molecule simulation reactions, the authors find out that disulfide bonds, the only cross-linking bonds in keratin, can be effectively broken by starch-derived dithiothreitol, and the resultant keratin can be well separated by the cosmetic ingredient sodium dodecyl sulfate, which forms micelles that stabilize the keratin solution. Accordingly, the traditional strong hydrogen-bond breakers like urea and LiBr can no longer be used, which helps to protect the integrity of keratin. The resultant fully dissolved, highly concentrated keratin solution (keratin content = 18 wt %) is directly applied for wet spinning. To toughen and strengthen the envisaged keratin fibers, a few hydroxypropyl cellulose and glutaraldehyde and 4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) are incorporated. Eventually, the regenerated continuous fibers with keratin content as high as 90 wt % offer a combination of properties similar to natural wool.

We proposed a novel approach to prepare high-performance continuous regenerated keratin fibers with wool-like structure by using the cortical cells and linear keratin from wool waste as reinforcement and adhesive, respectively. The spindle-shaped cortical cells were taken from wool waste based on the different responses of cortical cells and mesenchyme in wool to the treatments of H 2 O 2 oxidation and ultrasonication. The linear keratin was yielded through dissolving wool waste in the green solution consisting of starch derived dithiothreitol and protein denaturant sodium dodecyl sulfate. The recycled keratin fibers were produced by wet-spinning of the mixture solution comprising of cortical cells, linear keratin and toughener poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate, and crosslinked by glutaraldehyde and 4,4′-methylenebis-(phenyl isocyanate). The cortical cells were aligned along the regenerated fibers axis and retained quite a few α-helical crystals of the intermediate filaments, benefitting improvement of mechanical properties. Consequently, the valuable chemical compositions and hierarchical microstructures of wool were largely inherited. Their mechanical properties, thermal stability, dyeing property, moisture absorption capability, and antistatic resistance resembled those of wool. The regenerated fibers contained 93.3 wt.% components of wool, and the amount of synthetic chemicals in the regenerated fibers was controlled to as low as 6.7 wt.%.
