Norfloxacin-Derived Carbon Dots with Rich Electron Pyrrolic Nitrogen for Copper Corrosion Inhibition and Antibacterial Functions

Caiqin Miao,Xinyue Shi,Zhijian Li,Xiaoyong Zhang,Xinzhi Wang,Depeng Yang,Qun Wang

The coexisting anticorrosion and antibacterial functions are of great significance for the marine industry. Controllable surface negative charge and wettability of pyrrolic nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) derived from the single antibiotic norfloxacin precursor with a special nitrogen heterocyclic structure were successfully fabricated through the hydrothermal route. The incorporated functional groups and chemical bonds, surface charge, mechanism of pyrrole nitrogen ring formation at the molecular level, and antibacterial properties of NCDs were revealed by FTIR, XPS, zeta potential, LC–MS, and electrochemical techniques. The present corrosion efficiency (96.1%) in 3.5 wt % NaCl saline solution in the presence of air and N2 or UO22+ is higher than most previously reported values. The proposed electron transfer corrosion mechanism suggests that the negative charge domains of NCDs were strengthened by the saltwater electron sink effect to repel chlorine and simultaneously a large number of electrons of NCDs were injected into copper as the electron reservoir based on energy-level matching, thereby avoiding Cu0 oxidization. Current works provide a guideline for exploring novel eco-friendly and highly efficient NCD corrosion inhibitor materials with antibacterial properties for safeguarding metals in seawater.

A novel hybrid hydrogel bead of sodium alginate/attapulgite/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for efficient adsorption of norfloxacin from water

Na Li,Shaobai Wen,Chunwei Yu

Sodium alginate (SA) hydrogels have been extensively utilized for pollutant removal from wastewater due to the distinct properties of hydrophilicity, biocompatibility and reusability. However, the limited functional groups and poor adsorption capacity have hindered their applications. In this study, a novel hybrid hydrogel bead, composed of sodium alginate, attapulgite, and zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (SA/ATP/ZIF-8), was synthesized using a one-pot blending and ion cross-linking method for adsorptive removal norfloxacin (NOR) from aqueous solutions. The incorporation of ATP and ZIF-8 significantly enhanced the thermal stability and anti-swelling properties of the SA hydrogel beads. The effects of solution pH, contact time, initial NOR concentration, temperature, and the presence of coexisting substances on NOR uptakes were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that the NOR uptake on SA/ATP/ZIF-8 hybrid hydrogel beads was significantly higher than that of the pure SA and SA/ATP hydrogel beads, and the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of SA/ATP/ZIF-8 for NOR was 1360.67 mg/g at pH 5.0. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetic was well-described by a pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption isotherm was most accurately represented by the Langmuir-Freundlich model. In tests conducted with Nandu River water, the SA/ATP/ZIF-8 exhibited removal efficiencies of 100 % for NOR at an initial concentration of 0.0015 mmol/L and 71 % at 0.015 mmol/L. Spectroscopic characterization and adsorption performance experiments indicated that the adsorption of NOR onto SA/ATP/ZIF-8 involved multiple mechanisms, including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic adsorption, cation exchange, π-π electron donor-acceptor interaction (EDA), and coordination. Consequently, the remarkable features of SA/ATP/ZIF-8 hydrogel beads highlight their great potential and promising practicability for separation and removal of lower-concentration antibiotics from wastewater.

Enhancing photocatalytic norfloxacin degradation: Synergistic engineering of heterojunctions and oxygen vacancies in Fe-based MIL

Yixuan Liu,Jiamin Wei,Qi Zong,Chaoyue Chen,Tinghai Yang,Weiqiao Liu

Constructing cost-efficient and robust Fe-MIL-based photocatalysts for efficiently photodegrading antibiotics is highly appealing, however, their intrinsic defects, particularly unsatisfied visible light harvesting efficiency and rapid recombination of charge carriers, provide significant challenges. Herein, oxygen-vacancy-rich Bi 2 WO 6 -OVs/NH 2 -MIL-88B (Fe) composites were successfully constructed via a two-step approach consisting of a hydrothermal reaction followed by NaBH 4 treatment. The chemical compositions, microstructure, morphology, as well as optical properties of the as-prepared samples were thoroughly established. The optimized Bi 2 WO 6 -OV(40)/NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) photocatalyst exhibited the maximum photocatalytic efficiency (95.3 %) for the photodegradation of Norfloxacin (NOR), which was considerably greater than that of the heterostructure (56.9 %). The enhancement of photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the collaborative effect between oxygen vacancies and hybrid heterojunctions, which jointly enhances photoexcited electron generation and accelerates charge transfer. Furthermore, from the perspective of practical applications, the effects of pH, NOR concentration, and photocatalyst reuse were carefully investigated. The radical trapping experiments and ESR results verified that superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ), holes (h + ), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were the main active species in the NOR degradation process, and the possible photocatalytic mechanism was speculated accordingly. This research provides a promising approach to fabricating Fe-MOF-based heterojunctions with surface oxygen vacancy defect modification for the photodegradation of antibiotics.

CuNiN@C coupled with peroxymonosulfate as efficient catalytic system for the removal of norfloxacin by adsorption and catalysis

Yiwen Luo,Xue Huang,Yan Li,Yuqi Fu,Ziyou Wang,Jinfeng Lu,Jing Zhang

In this study, calcined Cu-based metal-organic frameworks impregnated with nickel nitrate and pyrrole (CuNiN@C) with better stability and degradation performance was synthesized by doping of both Ni and N. Coupling with peroxymonosulfate (PMS), CuNiN@C worked as adsorptive bifunctional catalyst in effectively degradation of norfloxacin (NFX). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Selected area electron diffraction (SAED), High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were applied for the preliminary characterization of the synthesized material to reveal the complete retention of the octahedral particle shape and successful doping of nitrogen. The results showed that over 80% NFX (5 mg/L) was degraded in 30 min with CuNiN@C (0.2 g/L) and PMS (2 mmol/L), and the reusability of CuNiN@C in four cycles did not significantly deteriorated, which was attributed to Ni doping. The mechanism of NFX degradation was separated into two parts: adsorption of CuNiN@C and activation of PMS. CuNiN@C adsorption followed a pseudo-second order rate model (R 2  = 0.99), and nitrogen doping caused multiple electron-withdrawing functional groups in order to achieve chemisorption. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N 2 adsorption of both the pre-test and post-test CuNiN@C were adopted in the adsorption mechanism investigation. Meanwhile, as the activate sites of CuNiN@C, Cu and Ni responded to the PMS activation, and three radicals may be generated during the activation. Radical quenching experiments and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) illustrated that the hydroxyl radical ( OH) plays a major role in NFX oxidation, which was confirmed by the effect of pH value experiment. According to results of the liquid chromatograph linked to a mass spectrometer (LC-MS), possible degradation pathways are proposed: the substitution reactions and elimination reactions on both quinolone and benzene rings, the destruction of the piperazinyl group and the opening of the quinolone ring. This study provides new insight into the fabrication and application of the CuNiN@C/PMS system as antibiotic pollution remedy in aquatic environment.

Novel photocatalytic system Fe-complex/TiO2 for efficient degradation of phenol and norfloxacin in water

Xinyue Wang,Yingnan Sun,Lu Yang,Qingkun Shang,Dan Wang,Tongtong Guo,Yihang Guo

Photocatalysis is one of the effective strategies to eliminate various organic pollutants in water body. In this paper we have prepared a series of new composite photocatalysts to degrade phenol and norfloxacin under visible light irradiation. They were [Fe II (dpbpy) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ]/TiO 2 , [Fe II (dpbpy)(phen) 2 ]/TiO 2 and [Fe II (dpbpy)(bpy) 2 ]/TiO 2 (dpbpy: 2,2′-bipyridine-4,4′-diphosphoric acid, phen: 1,10-phenanthroline, bpy: 2,2-bipyridyl). The results show that their photocatalytic performance and cyclic stability are much better than that of pure TiO 2 or P25. Phenol can be degraded almost completely and the active groups or substituents of norfloxacin (NOR) can be destroyed also, which greatly reduced the biological toxicity of phenol and norfloxacin in water. The possible mechanisms of improving the photocatalytic activity and stability of TiO 2 by using Fe-complex are proposed based on free radical capture test and density functional theory calculation. It is clearly that the interfacial interaction between Fe-complex and titanium dioxide directly affects the photocatalytic activity and stability of the composite photocatalyst. The conjugated structure of the complexes plays a crucial role.

Degradation of norfloxacin by red mud-based prussian blue activating H2O2: A strategy for treating waste with waste

Shitong Liu,Jun Wang,Yang Liu,Baojun Yang,Maoxin Hong,Shichao Yu,Guanzhou Qiu

The massive accumulation of red mud (RM) and the abuse of antibiotics pose a threat to environment safety and human health. In this study, we synthesized RM-based Prussian blue (RM-PB) by acid solution-coprecipitation method to activate H 2 O 2 to degrade norfloxacin, which reached about 90% degradation efficiency at pH 5 within 60 min and maintained excellent catalytic performance over a wide pH range (3−11). Due to better dispersion and unique pore properties, RM-PB exposed more active sites, thus the RM-PB/H 2 O 2 system produced more reactive oxygen species. As a result, the removal rate of norfloxacin by RM-PB/H 2 O 2 system was 8.58 times and 2.62 times of that by RM/H 2 O 2 system and PB/H 2 O 2 system, respectively. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced in the degradation process included ·OH, ·O 2 - and 1 O 2 , with 1 O 2 playing a dominant role. The formation and transformation of these ROS was accompanied by the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle, which was conducive for the sustained production of ROS. The RM-PB/H 2 O 2 system maintained a higher degradation efficiency after five cycles, and the material exhibited strong stability, with a low iron leaching concentration. Further research showed the degradation process was less affected by Cl - , SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , and humic acids, but was inhibited by HCO 3 - and HPO 4 2- . In addition, we also proposed the possible degradation pathway of norfloxacin. This work is expected to improve the resource utilization rate of RM and achieve treating waste with waste.

In situ imprinted cavity fabrication within BiOBr@porphyrin composites for selective and efficient degradation of trace norfloxacin

Xuemeng Tian,Pengcheng Wang,Yue Wang,Xiaoyu Shi,Long Zhang,Jinfeng Liu,Yangyang Wang,Ruixia Gao

In this work, molecularly imprinted BiOBr@porphyrin composites (BiOBr@TAPP-MIP) were prepared by directly introducing imprinted cavities within the porphyrin-based framework, achieving in situ imprinted cavities for both the selective adsorption and efficient degradation of trace norfloxacin in water. The SEM, XPS, and XRD characterization results revealed the successful synthesis of a porphyrin-based imprinting layer on the surface of BiOBr. The optical characterization confirmed a substantial improvement in visible-light absorption and separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs for BiOBr@TAPP-MIP compared to pure BiOBr. Accordingly, the adsorption and photodegradation experiments indicated that the in situ imprinted BiOBr@TAPP-MIP had larger adsorption capacity (181.1 mg g−1) and enhanced photodegradation performance for norfloxacin when compared to the non-imprinted BiOBr@TAPP-NIP. Compared with competitive pollutants, the selectivity coefficients for norfloxacin reached 1.77 for adsorption and 1.08 for degradation. Moreover, BiOBr@TAPP-MIP maintained high stability and excellent photodegradation performance in a variety of complex water environments. The in situ imprinted method proposed here has the potential to serve as a facile and universal approach for efficiently dealing with a broader range of trace pollutants.

Retentions of bisphenol A and norfloxacin by three different ultrafiltration membranes in regard to drinking water treatment

Hao Wu,Xiaojun Niu,Jia Yang,Caihong Wang,Meiqing Lu

The retention efficiencies of bisphenol A (BPA) and norfloxacin (NOR) by three different ultrafiltration (UF) membranes prepared in laboratory were investigated, together with the influencing factors such as initial concentration, ionic strength, pH, membrane fouling and trans-membrane pressure (TMP). The results show that the effects of initial concentration and ionic strength on retentions is minor for both BPA and NOR. BPA retentions substantially decreased as pH value approached to its p K a value, and for NOR they first increased and decreased afterwards with pH change. The retentions are all improved after HA fouling because of the HA block in the membrane pores and the developed cake layer, and it can be concluded that between pollutants and HA there exists not only adsorption with each other but also competitive adsorption for sites on membranes. The retentions of both BPA and NOR decrease with increasing pressure. Generally, the effects of these factors on BPA and NOR retention are different and the retentions of the three UF membranes for NOR always remain at a low level, which needs further investigation.

Simultaneous removal of mixed contaminants, copper and norfloxacin, from aqueous solution by ZIF-8

Long Zhou,Na Li,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Many wastewaters commonly contain complex mixtures of both antibiotics and heavy metals, where the simultaneous removal of these mixed contaminants is still a challenge. In this paper, ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework material, was proposed as a potential absorbent to simultaneously remove norfloxacin and copper from wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments showed that ZIF-8 could simultaneously remove 95.4% of Cu and 80.3% of norfloxacin. ZIF-8 was characterized before and after the removal of the mixed contaminants. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that ZIF-8 was synthesized successfully and maintained a stable structure after contaminant adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) both suggested that contaminants were partially adsorbed on the surface of ZIF-8. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) also indicated the presence of both carboxyl and Cu on the ZIF-8 surface confirming that a mixture of contaminants was adsorbed. For both contaminants, adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and best fit the Freundlich adsorption model with correlation coefficients (R 2 ) of 0.973 and 0.994, for copper and norfloxacin, respectively. Finally, removal mechanisms for copper and norfloxacin by ZIF-8 were proposed. For Cu, the adsorption process on ZIF-8 was mainly due to ion exchange, whereas electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking may be responsible for norfloxacin adsorption. Overall this study demonstrated that ZIF-8 was a promising material for the treatment of wastewater containing mixtures of organic and metallic contaminants.

EFFICIENT REMOVAL OF NORFLOXACIN FROM WATER BY Fe-MOFs

Wei Fuhua,Ren Qinhui,Wang Nannan,Chen Hongliang,Zhang Yutao,Liang Zhao

The synthesis of Fe-MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) was conducted using a solution heat method, followed by characterization through XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), and TG (thermogravimetry) analysis techniques. Subsequently, the Fe-MOFs were employed for norfloxacin removal. The experimental findings demonstrate that theoretical simulations of norfloxacin adsorption by Fe-MOFs involved the application of pseudo-first kinetic model, pseudo-second kinetic model, and adsorption isotherm. Chemisorption was identified as the primary mechanism observed. Notably, a maximum adsorption capacity of 197.7 mg g-1 was achieved at pH 10. These results underscore the practical feasibility of utilizing Fe-MOFs in applications related to norfloxacin adsorption.

Exploring the Potential of Biochar Derived from Chinese Herbal Medicine Residue for Efficient Removal of Norfloxacin

Pengwei Li,Ziheng Zhao,Miaomiao Zhang,Hang Su,Ting Zhao,Weisheng Feng,Zhijuan Zhang

One-step carbonization was explored to prepare biochar using the residue of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine,Atropa belladonnaL. (ABL), as the raw material. The resulting biochar, known as ABLB4, was evaluated for its potential as a sustainable material for norfloxacin (NOR) adsorption in water. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics was conducted through batch adsorption experiments. The maximum calculated NOR adsorption capacity was 252.0 mg/g at 298 K, and the spontaneous and exothermic adsorption of NOR on ABLB4 could be better suited to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. The adsorption process observed is influenced by pore diffusion, π–π interaction, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding between ABLB4 and NOR molecules. Moreover, the utilization of response surface modeling (RSM) facilitated the optimization of the removal efficiency of NOR, yielding a maximum removal rate of 97.4% at a temperature of 304.8 K, an initial concentration of 67.1 mg/L, and a pH of 7.4. Furthermore, the biochar demonstrated favorable economic advantages, with a payback of 852.5 USD/t. More importantly, even after undergoing five cycles, ABLB4 exhibited a consistently high NOR removal rate, indicating its significant potential for application in NOR adsorption.

Degradation of Norfloxacin in an Aqueous Solution by the Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron-Activated Persulfate Process

Yanchang Zhang,Lin Zhao,Yongkui Yang,Peizhe Sun

In this study, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) was synthesized and used to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR). The nZVI/PS system exhibited a high reactivity towards NOR, and the degradation efficiency of NOR (100 mg/L) reached 93.8% with 0.1 g/L nZVI, 12 mM PS, and an initial pH of 7.0 within 7 min. The NOR degradation followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the effects of parameters such as nZVI dosage, PS concentration, initial pH, and temperature were investigated systematically. Overloading of nZVI lowered the degradation efficiency owing to the quenching effect of excessive Fe2+. The higher PS concentration and temperature favored the degradation of NOR. The influence of pH was not obvious, and the degradation was effective in a wide pH range. In addition, the radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) indicated that both sulfate radical (SO4⋅-) and hydroxyl radical (OH⋅) were the dominant radicals in the degradation process, in which the latter played a more important role. Finally, three degradation pathways were proposed based on the result of intermediates identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Overall, this study indicated that the nZVI/PS system could provide a promising alternative for NOR wastewater treatment.
