Sustainable and mechanically robust epoxy resins derived from chitosan and tung oil with proton conductivity

Hong Song,Chaofan Liu,Daxiang Gui,Ye Sha,Qingping Song,Puyou Jia,Jiangang Gao,Ying Lin

The development of sustainable and functional epoxy resins from renewable biomass is gaining increasing attention. Herein, renewable and mechanically strong epoxy resins from chitosan and tung oil that possess proton conduction properties are developed. Firstly, tung oil-based epoxy monomers and chitosan based chain transfer agent were prepared. Then, a “grafting from” reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was carried out on chitosan using epoxy monomers toward elastic graft copolymer, which combined rigid backbone and flexible side chains in one macromolecule. After being cured with citric acid (catalyst-free), a biomass-based epoxy resins with dual network structure can be obtained. The thermal and mechanical properties of these epoxy resins could be tuned through controlling the content of cross-linkers. Moreover, the chitosan bearing abundant amino groups not only enhanced strength of the epoxy resins, but also endowed them with proton conductivity. Overall, the epoxy resins exhibited high tensile strength and comparable proton conduction, which provides a new paradigm to design green functional materials for potential applications.

Two Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks with Imidazole Encapsulation: Synthesis and Proton Conductivity

Biao-Biao Hao,Xin-Xin Wang,Chen-Xi Zhang,Qinglun Wang

On the basis of the carboxylic structure of trimesic acid (TMA) and 5-borono-1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (B-BDC), here two hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), HOF 1 (MA-TMA) and HOF 2 (MA-B-BDC), were prepared by reacting melamine (MA) with trimesic acid and 5-borono-1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, respectively. The as-prepared HOF 1 and HOF 2 with 3D supramolecular structure exhibit excellent performance in proton transport. AC impedance test shows that the proton conductivities of HOF 1 and HOF 2 reach 3.11 × 10–4 S·cm–1 (343 K, 98% RH) and 4.32 × 10–4 S·cm–1 (323 K, 98% RH), respectively. To increase the proton conductivity, Im@HOF 1 and Im@HOF 2 were obtained by introducing imidazole (Im), which acts as a jumping site for proton transfer. The proton conductivities of Im@HOF 1 and Im@HOF 2 reached 4.12 × 10–4 S·cm–1 (333 K, 98% RH) and 1.20 × 10–3 S·cm–1 (353 K, 98% RH), respectively. This is the first time that guest molecules were introduced into HOFs. The stability and proton conductivity of the HOFs are improved due to the interaction of imidazole with carboxyl groups and water molecules.

N,N-bis(sulfopropyl)aminyl-4-phenyl polysulfone and O,O′-bis(sulfopropyl)resorcinol-5-yl-4-phenyl polysulfone composite membrane for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Ting Pan,Baohua Yue,Liuming Yan,Guangbo Zeng,Yidong Hu,Shufa He,Wei Lu,Hongbin Zhao,Jiujun Zhang

Novel functionalized polysulfone with high local density of sulfonic acid groups, N , N -bis(sulfopropyl)aminyl-4-phenyl polysulfone or O , O′ -bis(sulfopropyl)resorcinol-5-yl-4-phenyl polysulfone (PSF-X-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H, X = N or O) are synthesized. These polymers are synthesized by bromination of polysulfone followed by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction to graft the aminophenyl groups and the dimethoxyphenyl groups onto the polymeric backbone, followed by introduction of the sulfopropyl groups via sultone ring-opening reaction. In addition, the composite membrane of PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H is also synthesized for comparison. The maximum proton conductivity of composite PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H reaches 46.66 mS cm −1 at 95 °C and 90% RH, higher than PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H (42.06 mS cm −1 ) and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H (38.76 mS cm −1 ). Meanwhile, the composite exhibits compromised water uptake and swelling ratio, and low methanol permeability . The excellent overall performance of the composite is attributed to phase-separation between the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic subphases, and the hydrogen-bonding network developed in the hydrophilic subphases.

A promising Al-CeZrO4/HPW-incorporated SPEEK composite membrane with improved proton conductivity and chemical stability for PEM fuel cells

Yingfeng Wang,Jiabin You,Zhuowei Cheng,Kun Jiang,Linlin Zhang,Wanli Cai,Yun-Quan Liu,Shuirong Li

An improved sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) nanocomposite membrane was prepared by incorporating both phosphotungstic acid (HPW) and Al doped cerium-based oxides (Al-CeZrO4) in SPEEK matrix. The HPW was immobilized by Al-CeZrO4 so that firmly dispersed acid–base pairs were formed. The introduction of Al-CeZrO4 helped improve the chemical stability of the pristine (baseline) SPEEK membrane without compromising the conductivity, and the addition of HPW further enhanced the conduction of protons through acid–base interactions. Stability tests showed that when the SPEEK/Al-CeZrO4 nanocomposite membrane was immersed in a Fenton’s solution for 108 h at 80°C, a loss of 34.9% in proton conductivity was observed, which is 24.1% less than that of the pristine SPEEK membrane, indicating that the attenuation of membrane proton conductivity was inhibited. At the same time, the proton conductivity of the SPEEK/Al-CeZrO4/HPW nanocomposite membrane (that has already incorporated HPW) was increased by 15.5% compared to the SPEEK/Al-CeZrO4 nanocomposite membrane. Hence, Al-CeZrO4/HPW is considered as an effective inorganic nanofiller for improving both proton conductivity and chemical stability of SPEEK membranes, and the hybrid composite membrane is worth further studying.

Metalloid phosphorus cation doping: An effective strategy to improve permeability and stability through the hydrogen permeable membranes

Libin Zhuang,Jiaqi Li,Li Chen,Jian Xue,Xinzhi Chen,Haihui Wang

Metalloid element doping is a novel strategy to improve the properties of hydrogen permeable membranes. Herein, phosphorus doping was applied to enhance the hydrogen separation performance of lanthanum tungstate membrane for the first time. The effects of P content on the hydrogen permeability of La 5.5 W 0.6 Mo 0.4−x P x O 11.25−δ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) membranes were firstly investigated under different temperatures. Among series of doped-membranes, La 5.5 W 0.6 Mo 0.35 P 0.05 O 11.25−δ exhibited increased hydrogen permeability and improved stability than the parent material due to higher protonic conductivity. The results showed that metalloid phosphorus element doping possesses a beneficial effect on the hydrogen separation performance, which could accelerate the development of the hydrogen permeable membranes and promote their practical applications.

Enhanced proton conductivity in a Cu-BTC thin-film membrane through lysine incorporation and a mixed matrix membrane

Yuan Gao,Bo Liu,Hanlu Xu,Caixia Shi,Ning Yan,Shaorong Wang,Rongli Jiang

To meet the growing demand for clean and sustainable energy, the development of high-performance proton conductive materials is crucial for practical applications in PEMFCs. However, the current materials suffer from issues such as low conductivity, poor durability, and unclear structure–activity relationship. To address these challenges, we investigate the proton conductivity properties of lysine-decorated Cu-BTC (where BTC is benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) and its corresponding thin-film membrane. We explore the impact of lysine (Lys) content (10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, and 40 wt%) on the proton conductivity performance under varying humidity and temperature conditions. Our findings show that Cu-BTC-Lys (40 wt%) exhibits the best conductivity of 1.2 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C under 100% relative humidity (RH), aided by an activation energy (Ea) of 0.25 eV facilitating proton transfer through hydrogen-bonding networks via the Grotthuss mechanism. We then create a proton conductive membrane by fabricating Cu-BTC-Lys (40 wt%) with the PVP/PVDF polymeric matrix. The resulting Cu-BTC-Lys@PVP/PVDF-20 membrane shows a significantly improved conductivity of 4.8 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C under 100% RH, along with a decreasing Ea value of 0.15 eV. The membrane retains its rich hydrogen-bonding networks and excellent performance durability for up to 5 days, making it an ideal candidate for real-life applications.

Phosphoric acid-loaded covalent triazine framework for enhanced the proton conductivity of the proton exchange membrane

Xiang Sun,Jun-Hua Song,Hong-qian Ren,Xiao-yang Liu,Xiong-wei Qu,Yi Feng,Zhong-Qing Jiang,Hui-li Ding

The development of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with high loading and stable electrolytes is currently critical and challenging for applications in new energy related devices such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). In this study, a novel porous organic skeleton (Covalent triazine framework, recorded as CTFp) is synthesized as a material for immobilized guest molecules via a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction. The phosphoric acid molecule (H 3 PO 4 ) is extruded into the CTFp porous organic framework by vacuum assisted method (VAM). Since the molecular size of H 3 PO 4 is smaller than the window size of the micropores in CTFp, a high loading of H 3 PO 4 is achieved. The large amounts of basic groups distributed in CTFp can form a strong electrostatic interaction with H 3 PO 4 , which ensures the low dynamic leakage of H 3 PO 4 . PEMs with high proton conductivity are developed by embedding phosphoric acid-loaded CTFp (H 3 PO 4 @CTFp) in a SPEEK matrix. The acid-base pair formed between H 3 PO 4 @CTFp network and SPEEK optimizes the interfacial interaction and enhances the dispersion of H 3 PO 4 @CTFp in the composite membrane. H 3 PO 4 stored in CTFp provides rich proton hopping sites for proton transport. The hydrogen bond network formed by self-dissociation of high concentration H 3 PO 4 molecules constructs a proton transfer channel with low energy barrier for proton transfer, thereby significantly enhancing the proton conductivity of the membrane. The results show that the proton conductivity of the composite membrane at 80 °C is 0.313 S/cm when the filler content is 15%. It is worth noting that the phosphoric acid leakage rate of H 3 PO 4 @CTFp is only 15.3% after the filler is immersed in water at 60 °C for 30 days. Therefore, the SPEEK/H 3 PO 4 @CTFp composite membranes are promising to develop new PEMs with low acid loss and high proton conductivity.

Anchoring of Fe-MIL-101-NH2 to the Polymer Membrane Matrix through the Hinsberg Reaction to Promote Conductivity of SPEEK Membranes

Hong-Jie Zhang,Xue-Bin Shang,Xu-Ran Wang,Chen-Xi Zhang,Qing-Lun Wang

SCPEEK@MOF proton exchange membranes, where SCPEEK is sulfinyl chloride polyether ether ketone and MOF is a metal–organic framework, were prepared by doping Fe-MIL-101-NH2 into polymers. The amino group in the MOF and the -SOCl2 group in thionyl chloride polyether ether ketone cross-link to form a covalent bond through the Hinsberg reaction, and the prepared composite membrane has stronger stability than other electrostatic interactions and simple physical doping composite membranes. The formation of covalent bonds improves the water absorption of the composite membrane, which makes it easy for water molecules to form hydrogen bonds. Moreover, SPEEK as a proton conductive polymer and the synergy of MOFs improve the proton conductivity of composite membranes. The composite membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The swelling rate, water absorption, mechanical stability, ion exchange capacity, and proton conductivity of the pure sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) membrane were compared with those of the mechanically doped SPEEK/MOF membrane and the composite membrane SCPEEK@MOF doped with different ratios of Fe-MIL-101-NH2, and all of the SCPEEK@MOF showed superior performance. When the Fe-MIL-101-NH2 loading rate of the composite membrane is 2%, the proton conductivity of the composite membrane can reach 0.202 S cm–1 at 363 K and a 98% relative humidity, which is much higher than that of the SPEEK/MOF membrane obtained by simple physical doping under the same conditions.

Promoting Proton Conductivity and Methanol-Resistance of PVdF-Based PEM Membrane by Incorporating Dispersive CNT Dotted With α-Zr(HPO4)2∙H2O

Pengtao Lei,Xiangyang Xu,Chenyu Huang,Dongsheng Chen,Zhenkun Jiang

To optimize the proton transport performance of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF), a proton exchange membrane (PEM) material, carbon nanotube (CNT), and zirconium hydrogen phosphate (ZrP) have been blended into the PVdF matrix. Adopting a hydrothermal synthesis route, the acidic ZrP can be better conjugated with the positively charged CNT functionalized by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). As visualized using electroscopes, ZrP nanocrystallines are intimately dotted and homogeneously distributed on CNT. The ZrP–PVdF interaction can be attributed to hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl and F-terminal groups. By incorporating well CNT/ZrP into PVdF via solution casting, the pore architecture can be regulated; namely, the macro-voids in PVdF are greatly reduced. The composite membranes exhibit tensile stress of 48–52 MPa while sustaining the thermal stability of PVdF. The incorporated CNT/ZrP can suppress void porosity and enhance film hydrophilicity. With improved wettability, the methanol permeability can be reduced to less than 2 × 10 −9 cm 2 ∙s −1 , ca. one-sixth that of pure PVdF. The proton conductivity for PVdF-CNT 0.03 -ZrP 0.06 , with CNT and ZrP mass content respectively 3 and 6 wt% that of PVdF, attains 0.089 S·cm −1 at 100°C, showing upgraded conducting capability. The membrane selectivity can be remarkably enhanced, verifying that CNT/ZrP blending is a facile and profitable approach for PEM optimization.

Low Permeability Membrane Regulated by Main/Side-Chain Bisulfonated Polybenzimidazole and CAU-10-H for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Cuicui Li,Tongtong Gao,Wanzhen Wu,Xinpu Zhou,Shuyu Zhang,Guangpeng Ma,Xianfeng Guan,Shuang Wang

A series of composite membranes (sPBIp3-CAUX) are prepared by using modified sulfonated polybenzimidazole with an optimal side link grafting degree of 30% as a polymer matrix and then doping with CAU-10-H. The hydrophobic alkyl side chains and hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups easily form microphase separated structures due to the polarity difference, which is conducive to the enhancement of proton conductivity. The introduction of CAU-10-H into the polymer effectively prevents the passage of vanadium ions because the vanadium ion transport path becomes more tortuous. The sPBIp3-CAU2 membrane has low vanadium permeability (3.1 × 10–9 cm2 min–1) and excellent ion selectivity (9.16 × 106 S min cm–3). In addition, the sPBIp3-CAU2 membrane shows good cell performance at 60 mA cm–2 with CE of 93.32% and EE of 83.03% compared with those of Nafion 117.

Poly(arylene ether) electrolyte membranes bearing aliphatic-chain-linked sulfophenyl pendant groups

Qiang Zhang,Baijun Liu,Wei Hu,Wan Xu,Zhenhua Jiang,Wei Xing,Michael D. Guiver

Two series of novel side-chain-acid poly(arylene ether)s bearing aliphatic-chain-linked sulfophenyl pendants are synthesized by direct polycondensation reactions derived from a new sulfonated difluoro-monomer, sodium 4-(3-(4-(2,6-difluorobenzoyl)phenoxy)propoxy)benzenesulfonate. The sulfonation content is readily controlled by adjusting the feed ratios of sulfonated and unsulfonated monomers. The obtained polymers exhibit considerably reduced dimensional swelling and good proton conductivities. It is found that the cyano-functionalized poly(arylene ether)s exhibit lower water uptake and dimensional swelling in comparison with the corresponding SPAE series. SPAEK-3 with an ion exchange capacity of 1.5   mequiv   g −1 has proton conductivity of 0.12   S   cm −1 and water swelling ratio of only 26% at 100   °C. Importantly, obvious hydrophobic/hydrophilic phase separation morphology is observed, which may be highly related with their good proton transport ability.

Fabrication of highly proton-conductive chitosan whole-bio-membrane materials functionalized with adenine and adenosine monophosphate

Guanglei Zhao,Yuanyuan Chen,Xiao-Feng Li,Sihan Zhang,Yuanqiu Situ

Chitosan-based membrane materials are promising biomaterials with excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, high hydrophilicity, and cost efficiency. However, their low proton conductivity greatly limits their use as proton exchange membranes, and the previously reported methods to improve their proton conductivity generally introduced non-biodegradable groups and compounds, which caused this natural polymer to lose its basic advantage of biodegradability. In this work, a facile and efficient strategy has been developed for fabricating new chitosan-based whole-biopolymers to satisfy both sustainability and high-performance simultaneously. The modified chitosan with introduced purine groups has significantly improved proton conductivity up to 50 fold higher than that of chitosan itself, due to the unique structures of the grafted purine groups that produced a large number of proton-hopping sites, and the adenine monophosphate-grafted membrane materials exhibited higher proton conductivity (0.1867 S cm−1) at 100 °C than Nafion, indicating their capability for use in high-temperature fuel cells. Meanwhile their methanol permeability was much lower than that of Nafion (7.888 × 10−7 cm2 s−1vs. 1.550 × 10−6 cm2 s−1). Blending of NCC with modified chitosan further improves its mechanical properties and dimensional stability. This study paves a new way to prepare environmentally friendly membrane materials in the place of commonly used non-degradable membranes, highlighting the prospects of natural polymer-based membrane materials in the sustainable fields of fuel cells, supercapacitors and solid-state batteries.
