Co-production and upgrading of multiple products from hydrothermal carbonization of microalgae with organic solvent assistance

Bin Zhang,Jingmiao Zhang,Ao Xia,Xinru Tang,Xianqing Zhu,Yun Huang,Xun Zhu,Qiang Liao

Hydrothermal carbonization facilitates microalgae utilization but suffers from low product quality, with no effective solutions. This study investigated the product characteristics and quality enhancement methods of hydrochar, bio-oil, and carbon dots prepared through hydrothermal carbonization of microalgae assisted by non-polar organic solvents (petroleum ether and n -hexane) and polar organic solvents (ethyl acetate, isopropanol, and ethanol). The results showed that non-polar organic solvents were more effective than polar organic solvents in extracting fatty acids hydrolyzed from lipids into the organic phase, reducing amidation with amino acids and lowering bio-oil nitrogen content by 47.0%, with n -hexane exhibiting the best effect. They also promoted Maillard reactions, increasing hydrochar and carbon dots yields by 41.2% and 63.3% while boosting nitrogen content by 48.9% and 15.7%, respectively. This study explored the co-production and upgrading of multiple products in microalgae hydrothermal carbonization with organic solvent assistance, offering insights into process optimization for efficient utilization of microalgae.

Profiling the role of microorganisms in quality improvement of the aged flue-cured tobacco

Wu Xinying,Cai Wen,Zhu Pengcheng,Peng Zheng,Zheng Tianfei,Li Dongliang,Li Jianghua,Zhou Guanyu,Du Guocheng,Zhang Juan

Background The aging process in the tobacco production, as in other food industries, is an important process for improving the quality of raw materials. In the spontaneous aging, the complex components in flue-cured tobacco (FT) improve flavor or reduce harmful compounds through chemical reactions, microbial metabolism, and enzymatic catalysis. Some believed that tobacco-microbe played a significant part in this process. However, little information is available on how microbes mediate chemical composition to improve the quality of FT, which will lay the foundation for the time-consuming spontaneous aging to seek ways to shorten the aging cycle. Results Comparing aged and unaged FT, volatile and non-volatile differential compounds (DCs) were multi-dimensionally analyzed with the non-targeted metabolomes based on UPLC-QTOP-MS (the ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry), GC–MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometer) assisted derivatization and HP-SPME-GC/MS (headspace solid-phase micro-extraction assisted GC–MS). Products associated with the degradation pathways of terpenoids or higher fatty acids were one of the most important factors in improving FT quality. With the microbiome, the diversity and functions of microbial flora were analyzed. The high relative abundance function categories were in coincidence with DCs-related metabolic pathways. According to the correlation analysis, Acinetobacter , Sphingomonas and Aspergillus were presumed to be the important contributor, in which Aspergillus was associated with the highest number of degradation products of terpenoids and higher fatty acids. At last, the screened Aspergillus nidulans strain F4 could promote the degradation of terpenoids and higher fatty acids to enhance tobacco flavor by secreting highly active lipoxygenase and peroxidase, which verified the effect of tobacco-microbes on FT quality. Conclusions By integrating the microbiome and metabolome, tobacco-microbe can mediate flavor-related substances to improve the quality of FT after aging, which provided a basis for identifying functional microorganisms for reforming the traditional spontaneous aging.

Effect of combined ultrasonic and enzymatic extraction technique on the quality of noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) juice

Siting Wang,Zhiqing Liu,Shuang Zhao,Lin Zhang,Congfa Li,Sixin Liu

In order to obtain noni juice with high yield and good quality, the effect of combined extraction technique of enzymatic treatment (EZ) and ultrasonication (US) on the overall quality of noni juice was investigated. Moreover, the extraction performance of the EZ-US combined extraction technique was compared with that of EZ-based extraction and the US-based extraction. Response surface methodology (RSM) was designed to optimize the parameters of ultrasonic treatment, by taking consideration of the extraction efficiency, quality parameters and bioactive ingredients of noni juice. The results indicated that combined ultrasonic and enzymatic treatment achieved a synergistic effect on promoting the quality of noni juice. The maximum juice yield of 67.95 % was obtained under ultrasonication for 10 min at 600 W after enzymatic treatment (EZU). In addition, EZU-treated juice exhibited the highest contents of total phenolic and flavonoid, which were 148.19 ± 2.53 mg gallic acid/100 mL and 47.19 ± 1.22 mg rutin/100 mL, respectively, thus contributing to better antioxidant activity. Moreover, the EZU treatment significantly reduced the particle size of noni juice, and improved its suspension stability and rheological properties. FTIR results indicated that the treatments did not bring major changes in the chemical structure and the functional groups of compounds in noni juice. Therefore, EZU treatment can be successfully applied to the extraction of noni juice with better nutritional properties and overall quality.
