Robustly and Intrinsically Stretchable Ionic Gel-Based Moisture-Enabled Power Generator with High Human Body Conformality

Wenya He,Puying Li,Haiyan Wang,Yajie Hu,Bing Lu,Chuanxin Weng,Huhu Cheng,Liangti Qu

Direct harvesting of energy from moist air will be a promising route to supply electricity for booming wearable and distributed electronics, with the recent rapid development of the moisture-enabled electricity generator (MEG). However, the easy spatial distortion of rigid MEG materials under severe deformation extremely inconveniences the human body with intense physical activity, seriously hindering the desirable applications. Here, an intrinsically stretchable moisture-enabled electricity generator (s-MEG) is developed based on a well-fabricated stretchable functional ionic gel (SIG) with a flexible double-network structure and reversible cross-linking interactions, demonstrating stable electricity output performance even when stretched up to 150% strain and high human body conformality. This SIG exhibits ultrahigh tensile strain (∼600%), and a 1 cm × 1 cm SIG film-based s-MEG can generate a voltage of ∼0.4 V and a current of ∼5.7 μA when absorbing water from humidity air. Based on the strong adhesion and the excellent interface combination of SIG and rough fabric electrodes induced by the fabrication process, s-MEG is able to realize bending or twisting deformation and shows outstanding electricity output stability with ∼90% performance retention after 5000 cycles of bending tests. By connecting s-MEG units in series or parallel, an integrated device of “moisture-powered wristband” is developed to wear on the wrist of humans and drive a flexible sensor for tracking finger motions. Additionally, a comfortable “moisture-powered sheath” based on s-MEGs is created, which can be worn like clothing on human arms to generate energy while walking and flexing the elbow, which is promising in the field of wearable electronics.

Flexible electromyography sensor with in situ gelation hydrogel for early diagnosis of lumbar spine diseases

Mingxuan Zhang,Mingming Hao,Guoqiang Ren,Yinchao Zhao,Chujie Lv,Yizhang Xia,Wei Wang,Wei Chen,Yi Chen,Lianhui Li,Qifeng Lu,Ting Zhang

Prolonged sitting is a major risk factor for lumbar spine disorders, significantly affecting both physical and mental health. However, conventional clinical diagnosis primarily relies on imaging evaluations conducted after symptom onset, often missing opportunities for early intervention and allowing for disease progression. To address this, this paper presents a diagnostic method based on electromyography (EMG) using an adaptive flexible electromyography sensor (FES). The FES consists of a thermo-responsive in situ gelation hydrogel and flexible mesh electrode patch. The hydrogel undergoes a sol–gel transition at body temperature, enabling conformal skin contact and strong adhesion. As a result, the adhesion of the FES is 15 times stronger than that of conventional EMG electrodes. Consequently, the contact impedance is significantly reduced to 40 kΩ/cm 2 at 10 Hz, and a high signal-to-noise ratio of 23.28 dB is achieved, allowing for the effective monitoring of subtle electrophysiological signals during prolonged sitting. Overall, this research provides a foundation for the early-stage diagnosis of lumbar disorders, facilitating the transition of lumbar disease management from reactive treatment to proactive prevention.

Temporary Tattoo-Inspired, Skin-Adaptable Epidermal Electrode from an Ultrathin PU–PVA Film

Xinyuan Ye,Leqi Li,Zonglei Wang,Yuli Wang,Jiawei Yang,Meiqiong Zheng,Mingzhe Wang,Zichong Ji,Shihong Lin,Yujie Zhang,Jian Luo,Junhong Yi,Pengcheng Zhou,Xuanwen Cao,Xuezhong He,Yan Wang

Long-term, high-fidelity electrophysiological monitoring requires epidermal electrodes that simultaneously offer conformability, breathability, and mechanical durability─attributes rarely achieved in current designs─through a scalable, simple, and low-cost fabrication strategy. We report a 5.2-μm-thick, transparent, air- and vapor-permeable “tattoo” electrode that adheres to the human skin through water-activated hydrogen bonding provided by a NaCl/glycerol/water hydrating solution, echoing the mechanism of temporary tattoos. The fabrication process is easy, efficient, and scalable. The device consists of a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix reinforced by an electrospun polyurethane nanomesh, yielding an interfacial area adhesion energy of 2060.8 μJ cm–2, and a low skin contact impedance of 21.0 kΩ at 100 Hz. Unlike conventional hydrogel or dry electrodes, our design needs no external adhesive layer, resists dehydration, and withstands everyday mechanical stress while remaining comfortable to wear. It exhibits an air permeance of 0.94 cm3 cm–2 s–1 cmHg–1, a water-vapor transmission rate of 1856.5 ± 36.9 g m–2 day–1, and survives 1000 cycles of 100% uniaxial strain. The electrode also retains >81.4 ± 1.7% of its initial water content after 7 days of storage and maintains its stretchability, adhesion, skin contact impedance, and conductivity even after 60 days. These properties enable reliable, minimized motion artifact acquisition of biosignals during vigorous activities and extended daily use. Finally, we demonstrate wireless surface electromyogram that tracks muscle-recruitment dynamics during strength-training and rehabilitation exercises, including push-ups and climbing, underscoring the potential of the tattoo electrode for real-world wearable health monitoring.

Ultra-Conformable Ionic Skin with Multi-Modal Sensing, Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial and Regenerative Capabilities for Smart and Expedited Wound Care

Xiao Lin,Yuxuan Mao,Peng Li,Yanjie Bai,Tao Chen,Kang Wu,Dandan Chen,Huilin Yang,Lei Yang

While rapid wound healing is essential yet challenging, there is also an unmet need for functional restoration of sensation. Inspired by natural skin, an ultra-conformable, adhesive multi-functional ionic skin (MiS) with multi-modal sensing capability is devised for smart and expedited wound care. The base of MiS is a unique skin-like, conductive and self-adaptive adhesive polyacrylamide/starch double-network hydrogel (PSH) and self-powered, flexible, triboelectric sensor(s) is integrated on top of PSH for multi-tactile sensing. MiS could enhance wound contraction, collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and epidermis formation in a full-thickness skin defect wound model in vivo , while significantly inhibiting the biofilm formation of a wide range of microorganisms. MiS also exhibits multi-modal sensing capability for smart and instant therapeutics and diagnostics, including skin displacement or joint motion, temperature, pressure and tissue exudate changes of wound bed, and locally releasing drugs in a pH-responsive manner. More importantly, MiS could restore the skin-mimicking tactile sensing function of both touch location and intensity, and thus could be used as a human-machine interface for accurate external robotic control. MiS demonstrates a new comprehensive paradigm of combining wound diagnosis and healing, broad-spectrum anti-microbial capability and restoration of multi-tactile sensing for the reparation of severe wound.
