In this study, two kinds of form-stable multifunctional materials with thermal and electrical response (FPCMs: DP-E7U3-CNT, DP-E7T3-CNT) are composed of wood-based honeycomb-like celluloses micro-framework (DP), carbon nanotubes (CNT), erythritol-urea (E7U3) or erythritol-thiourea (E7T3). In FPCMs, DP acts as a skeleton structure to seal E7U3 and E7T3 and provide more pathways for heat conduction. The CNT acts as an extended surface to further improve thermal conductivity . FE-SEM showed that the honeycomb-like pore structure of DP was completely filled with E7U3, E7T3 and CNT. FTIR and XRD analysis show that there is only a combination of physical interactions between the components of FPCMs. DSC curves and thermal conductivity analysis results show that DP-E7U3-1.5CNT and DP-E7T3-1.5CNT with the mass fraction of carbon nanotubes (1.5 wt%) have the highest latent heat values (230.3 J/g, 272.2 J/g) and thermal conductivity (0.9832 W/(m·K), 0.9363 W/(m·K)). Both DP-E7U3-1.5CNT and DP-E7T3-1.5CNT exhibit high latent heat retention and thermal stability after 100 heating-cooling cycles. In addition, DP-E7U3-1.5CNT and DP-E7T3-1.5CNT show excellent performance in light-heat energy conversion-storage, actual latent heat storage and release, thermal and electrical response performance, which make it has great potential to be multifunctional materials with thermal storage sand electrical response.

Three different methods, acid oxidation, mechanochemical process and ball milling, were used to modify multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The MWCNTs were dispersed into erythritol (Ery) to prepare composite phase change materials (PCMs). The effects of the MWCNTs on the thermal properties of erythritol-based composite PCMs were studied experimentally. FT-IR and XPS spectroscopy show that hydroxyl groups and carboxylic groups were generated on the surface of the MWCNTs after modification. The pretreatment of MWCNTs can improve their dispersibility in erythritol. When the mass fraction of MWCNTs was 1%, the thermal conductivity of Ery was increased obviously from 0.1956 W/(m·K) to 0.9779 W/(m·K). Besides, the MWCNTs could help improve the supercooling and solidification enthalpy of erythritol significantly. When the mass fraction of A-MWCNTs was only 0.5%, the freezing temperature of PCMs increased from 18.8 °C to 58.15 °C and the solidification enthalpy increased 50 J/g. After 10 heating and cooling cycles, the Ery/A-MWCNTs composites show a very good thermal cycling stability.

The thermal contact resistance (TCR) between the interfaces of phase change materials (PCMs) and their encapsulation materials, usually thin-walled metals, have a great impact on the heat storage/retrieval rates of PCM-based latent heat storage (LHS) systems. However, the TCR data beteween metal/PCM interfaces are rarely reported in the literature. In this work, an improved self-designed steady-state apparatus was adopted to measure the TCR between the interfaces of erythritol, a cost-effective sugar alcohol with great potential for medium-temperature LHS, and multiple metals including SS304, nickel silver (a copper-nickel-zinc ternary alloy), and 1060 Al. The metal/erythritol composites were prepared by naturally solidifying molten erythritol on the surface of thin metal plates. The variation of the TCR between metal/erythritol interfaces was measured as a function of the surface roughness (of the metal plates) and the contact pressure applied (between the interfaces). With the decrease of surface roughness, the TCR also decreases due to the better contact between the interfaces as observed by a microscope. Comparing to SS304 and nickel silver, the 1060 Al/erythritol composites exhibit a significant reduction of TCR by ~40% when rising the contact pressure from 0 MPa to 7 MPa, for all surface roughness levels tested. The in situ measured sample thickness variations confirmed that upon pressurization, the softer metal, i.e., 1060 Al, experiences more micro-deformation at the interface. In addition, correlations of the TCR data between metal/erthyritol interfaces were proposed with the surface roughness and contact pressure. The results and correlations attained in this work could serve as a reference for the thermal design of LHS units using erythritol.

Indole alkaloids from Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don were valued for their wide spectrum of pharmaceutical effects. Their biosynthesis is modulated by various abiotic factors including ultraviolet B radiation which induced ATP production and led to accumulation of indole alkaloids. To investigate the regulatory mechanism of secondary metabolism in the leaf mitochondria of C. roseus under ultraviolet B radiation, combinatory study of proteomic and metabolomic analyses of C. roseus was performed. ATP export in the leaves of C. roseus increased under UVB radiation, which required mitochondrial ATP synthase. Proteins related to mitochondrial complexes II/IV and their gene expression levels increased, and those related to mitochondrial complex I decreased. Proteins related to the methylerythritol phosphate pathway, especially geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate synthase, increased under ultraviolet B radiation. Metabolites whose levels changed were mainly alkaloids, organic acids, carbohydrates, phenylpropanoids, and fatty acids, while eight indole alkaloids increased. Integrative analysis of omics data indicated that the metabolism of glutamate and tyrosine was downregulated. These results suggest that ultraviolet B radiation induces dynamic changes in mitochondria in C. roseus , which guarantees ATP production, regulates the flux of the methylerythritol phosphate pathway to the biosynthesis of monoterpene moieties, and leads to accumulation of various indole alkaloids.
