Supercritical CO 2 (SC-CO 2 ) technology promises to overcome the trade-off between secondary waste volume and decontamination efficiency in traditional radioactivity decontamination methods. However, attempts to use this technology for decontaminating uranium-contaminated fabrics have remained unexplored. Hence, we investigated the role of additives in decontaminating uranium-contaminated fabrics using SC-CO 2 technology, with particular emphasis on off-line versus in-situ preparation methods. Additives prepared via the off-line method, comprising H(NO 3 ) · TBP complexes, demonstrated superior efficiency owing to immediate solubility and reactivity in SC-CO 2 . Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations also supported these experimental observations by visualizing the microstructural evolution of the additive molecules. The factors, including pressure (20 MPa) and temperature (343 K), were optimized, achieving up to 97.4 % decontamination efficiency in 40 min. The radioactivity of the fabric surface was reduced to the level that allowed for reuse in the nuclear field. Notably, the mechanism analysis revealed the transformation of uranium contaminants from UO 2 (OH) 2 to UO 2 (NO 3 ) 2 · 2TBP complexes, which were efficiently dissolved in SC-CO 2 . Furthermore, the technology demonstrated high versatility, successfully decontaminating various fabric types and real radioactive samples, achieving results suitable for reuse in the nuclear field. These findings suggest that SC-CO 2 , when combined with optimized additives, offers an environmentally sustainable and highly effective method for uranium decontamination in the nuclear industry.

In this work, 5-fluorouracil-loaded- poly( l -lactic)-polyethylene glycol/polyethylene glycol (5-FU-loaded-PLLA–PEG/PEG) nanoparticles were prepared using a novel reverse emulsion-solution enhanced dispersion by supercritical fluids (reverse emulsion-SEDS) technique in an effort to obtain an efficient drug delivery system . In the experiment, 5-FU and PEG were dissolved in water PLLA–PEG was dissolved in organic solution, the aqueous solution was added dropwise to the organic solution under magnetic stirring, a reverse emulsion was immediately formed. The reverse emulsion was dried by a SEDS process so that 5-FU-loaded-PLLA–PEG/PEG nanoparticles (5-FU-NPs) were obtained. The particle size, size distribution, surface morphology, and physical and chemical properties of the 5-FU-NPs were investigated by laser diffraction particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The drug encapsulation efficiency (EE), drug loading (DL), in vitro release profile and pharmacokinetics of 5-FU-NPs in rat plasma were investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The in vivo tumor inhibition effect, increase in lifespan and hepatotoxicity of placebo-NPs, 5-FU and 5-FU-NPs were determined using H22 tumor-bearing ICR mice. These results collectively suggest that 5-FU-NPs prepared using SEDS have potential anti-tumor applications as a controlled drug release dosage form without harmful drug toxicity .

There has been a growing emphasis on facile preparation of binary heterogeneous composite materials. Leveraging the eco-friendly efficiency of supercritical CO2 technology, we achieved precise control over the influencing factors of mass transfer, enabling the accurate modulation of the resulting product morphology and properties. In the current study, CuxO/ZrOy composite materials were prepared using this technology and calcined to obtain electrode materials for the detection of cysteine (Cys). Essential comprehensive characterization techniques were employed to elucidate the heterojunction. The resulting electrode demonstrated a linear response to Cys within a concentration range of 0.5 nM to 1 μM, featuring a high sensitivity of 1035 μA·cm–2·μM–1 and a low detection limit of 97.3 nM. Thus, establishing a novel avenue for nonenzyme-based electrochemical sensors tailored for biologically active Cys detection through the implementation of a heterogeneous structure.

Excessive bilirubin in human blood can cause irreversible damage to the patient’s brain and nervous system. Herein, chitin/MXene (Ch/MX) composite aerogel spheres were designed by supercritical CO2 technology to remove bilirubin safely, quickly, and efficiently. In this study, Ti3C2 with 4 nm thickness was uniformly dispersed in the chitin fibers as a monolayer nanofiller and tightly connected with the chitin fibers, which significantly improved the mechanical strength and adsorption capacity of the aerogel spheres. The Ch/MX aerogel spheres could withstand 25,000 times their own weight. Compared with chitin aerogel spheres, the equilibrium time for bilirubin adsorption by Ch/MX aerogel spheres was shortened by 33% and the adsorption capacity was increased by 40%. In addition, Ch/MX aerogel spheres still possess a high adsorption capacity of 142.86 mg/g in bilirubin solution with BSA protein up to 80 mg/mL. Compared with commercial products used clinically, Ch/MX has the advantages of high adsorption capacity and high interference resistance. Compared with our previous chitinous/graphene aerogel spheres, Ch/MX has the advantages of low dosage of functional materials, high bilirubin adsorption rate, and good biocompatibility. This study demonstrates the advantages of MXene as a nanofiller for adsorbing bilirubin and promotes the development and application of inorganic 2D nanomaterials in the clinical treatment of hyperbilirubinemia.

Currently, hemoperfusion is clinically the most rapid and effective treatment for removing toxins from the blood. The core of hemoperfusion is the sorbent inside the hemoperfusion device. Due to the complex composition of the blood, adsorbents tend to adsorb substances such as proteins in the blood (non-specific adsorption) while adsorbing toxins. Hyperbilirubinemia is caused by excessive levels of bilirubin in the human blood, causing irreversible damage to the patient's brain and nervous system, and even leading to death. High adsorption and high biocompatibility adsorbents with specific bilirubin adsorption are urgently needed to treat hyperbilirubinemia. Herein, poly(L-arginine) (PLA) which can specifically adsorb bilirubin, was introduced into chitin/MXene (Ch/MX) composite aerogel spheres. Ch/MX/PLA prepared by supercritical CO 2 technology had higher mechanical properties than Ch/MX and can withstand 50,000 times its own weight. The in vitro simulated hemoperfusion test showed that the adsorption capacity of Ch/MX/PLA was as high as 596.31 mg/g, which was 15.38 % higher than that of Ch/MX. Binary and ternary competitive adsorption tests showed that Ch/MX/PLA also had good adsorption capacity in the presence of a variety of interfering molecules. In addition, hemolysis rate testing and CCK-8 testing confirmed that Ch/MX/PLA had better biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. Ch/MX/PLA can meet the required properties of clinical hemoperfusion sorbents and has the ability to produce mass production. It has good application potential in the clinical treatment of hyperbilirubinemia.
