Pilot-scale supercritical CO2 extraction coupled molecular distillation and hydrodistillation for the separation of essential oils from artemisia argyi Lévl. et Vant

Jia-Lun Zhong,Nadeem Muhammad,Shun-Quan Chen,Li-Wei Guo,Jia-Sheng Li

The essential oils of Artemisia argyi Lévl. et Vant were extracted and separated using three methods, hydrodistillation (HD), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), and SFE coupled molecular distillation (SFE-MD). Various extraction parameters of SFE were optimized by process modeling of Hansen solubility parameters which are 30 MPa, temperature 45°C, no co-solvents, extraction time 2 h, and flow rate of 90 kg/h. The essential oils obtained by HD and SFE-MD have similar major compositions. The antimicrobial activities were examined according to the agar well diffusion method and the minimum inhibition concentrations against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were compared.Abbreviations A. argyi, Artemisia argyi; CFU, Colony Forming Unit; DMSO, dimethylsulfoxide; E. coli, Escherichia coli; GC-MS, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer; HD, hydrodistillation; HSP, Hansen solubility parameters; MIC, minimum inhibition concentration; OSE, organic solvents extraction; RSM, response surface methodology; SCCO2, supercritical-CO2; SFE, supercritical fluid extraction; SFE-MD, SFE coupled molecular distillation; SMILES, Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry Syntax; S. aureus, Staphylococcus aureus;

Discrimination of Camellia seed oils extracted by supercritical CO2 using electronic tongue technology

Duan Di,Huang Yong,Zou Ying,He Bingju,Tang Ruihui,Yang Liuxia,Zhang Zecao,Su Shucai,Wang Guoping,Zhang Deyi,Zhou Chunhui,Li Jing,Deng Maocheng

Analytical method which combines electronic tongue technique and chemometrics analysis is developed to discriminate oil types and predict oil quality. All the studied Camellia oil samples from pressing, n -hexane extraction and supercritical CO 2 extraction (SCCE), were successfully identified by principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Furthermore, multi factor linear regression model (MLRM) was established to predict oil quality, which are indicated by acid value (AV) and peroxide value (POV). The practical potential of e-tongue for the discrimination and assessment of Camellia oils has shown promising application in the characterization of Camellia oils in the oil quality evaluation.

Antioxidant Thermogelling Formulation for Burn Wound Healing

Minting Liu,Ying Chen,Qiang Zhu,Junjun Tao,Changming Tang,Huajun Ruan,Yunlong Wu,Xian Jun Loh

Graphical A multifunctional pearl polypeptide thermal gel system with active regulation of wound healing was prepared by the interaction between the components of pearl polypeptide and a hydrophobic block polymer. The temperature-sensitive hydrogel can improve the solubility of pearl peptides with wound healing activity, control the slow-release effect of pearl peptides, and greatly enhance the wound healing activity. In addition, both pearl peptides and thermal gels have antioxidant activity and help to scavenge abnormally generated free radical molecules. Burns are the most common and devastating form of wounds and are usually accompanied by abnormal inflammation, inadequate extracellular matrix production, reduced angiogenesis, and lack of growth factor stimulation, which can significantly delay wound healing and lead to complications. Pearl powder, a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat wound healing. In the present study, we found that supercritical CO 2 extracted pearl peptides in the size range of “>10kd” have great potential to promote wound healing at the cellular level. Antioxidant hydrogels were designed using selenium-containing block-functionalized PEG/PPG polymers. Pearl peptide components were combined into polymeric materials to develop new promising wound dressings. It was shown that pearl peptide hydrogels increased skin fibroblast viability, enhanced cellular resistance to oxidative stress, enhanced tissue remodeling, promoted angiogenesis, and exhibited enhanced promotion in wound healing.
