Biodesulfurization of model oil using growing cells of Gordonia sp. SC-10

Shuiquan Chen,Shuo Sun,Chaocheng Zhao,Qiyou Liu,Meng Zang

The biodesulfurization capacity of Gordonia sp. SC-10 in a biphasic reaction system was investigated in this study. Model oil containing dibenzothiophene was used as the sole sulfur source of bacterium. The results showed that 81.43% of the sulfur in model oil with initial sulfur content of 174 mg/l could be removed within 5 days. Gordonia sp. SC-10 had high desulfurization rate for model oils with low sulfur contents, which would reduce sulfur concentration to below 5 mg/l. Biodesulfurization process might be a potential method to obtain fuels with ultra-low sulfur contents.

Modeling, simulation, and optimization for producing ultra-low sulfur and high-octane number gasoline by separation and conversion of fluid catalytic cracking naphtha

Yuhao Zhang,Mengmeng Liu,Liang Zhao,Suxin Liu,Jinsen Gao,Chunming Xu,Mingzhi Ma,Qingfei Meng

Contradiction between the desulfurization and loss of octane number (ON) for fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) naphtha is the long-term problem of clean gasoline production. Moreover, ON loss is substantially aggravated during deep hydrodesulfurization because of the global limited supply of sulfur for gasoline. This paper introduced a novel process for ultra-clean gasoline production that solves the above problem by using a unique separation approach. The components were separated by the coupling of distillation and solvent extraction, which the separation efficiency depends on the relationship between solvent and feedstock components. However, the compositions of FCC naphtha are complicated and always changing due to different processing technologies. Therefore, changes in the material composition must be considered during production. In this study, ternary liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) was explored to investigate the interaction of olefin , sulfide, and sulfolane solvent. A universal quasi-chemical functional group activity coefficient (UNIFAC) group contribution model was selected to predict the product composition when the FCC naphtha was treated by this process. The lack and necessity of group interaction parameters for the prediction were obtained through the regressive calculation of LLE results. A simulation method was established by Aspen Plus, and the reliability was well illustrated. Finally, the high olefin content of FCC naphtha critical components was analyzed by this simulation method. The sulfur and olefin levels of the product were 9.0 mg/kg and 18.6 wt%, respectively. The operation conditions simulated using the proposed technique met the requirements for the latest commercial gasoline worldwide.

The impact of SiO2 nanoparticles on the dilational viscoelastic properties of water-nonionic surfactant-fuel interface

Qian Zhang,Zhiwei Guo,Yujie Yang,Yanxiang Li,Chuanfang Yang,Wangliang Li

Surfactants in ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) can improve the stability of the emulsified water droplet by forming a thin film at the water-fuel interface. Emulsified water droplets block the oil spray nozzle and break down the engine, which need to be removed. For colliding emulsified water droplets, surfactant film with high viscoelastic modulus provides an obstacle to their coalescence. Micro/nanosized-SiO 2 particles were added into ULSD to interrupt the arrangement of the surfactant film. After adding with 20 nm SiO 2 , the interfacial tension of water-monoolein-ULSD increased from 16.0 mN/m to 21.4 mN/m, and its viscoelastic modulus decreased from 17.1 mN/m to 10.9 mN/m, a decrease of 36.3%. It proved that the addition of nanosized SiO 2 into water-monoolein-ULSD system increased the interfacial tension and reduced the viscoelastic modulus of the monoolein film. However, after adding nanosized SiO 2 , the viscoelastic modulus of the water-PETO-B-ULSD layer had no significant changes. Therefore, we concluded that 20 nm SiO 2 disturbed the dense packing of monoolein as its adsorption to surfactants and the electrostatic repulsion force between them and the hydrophobic group, resulting in a decrease in elastic modulus . However, PETO-B had a complex branched structure leading to a loose packing, which had unoccupied adsorption sites and barely affected by the intrusion of 20 nm SiO 2 . Therefore, this research provided a strategy to add nanosized-SiO 2 into W/O emulsions containing monoolein-like surfactant to reduce its stability.

Biodiesel as Dispersant to Improve the Stability of Asphaltene in Marine Very-Low-Sulfur Fuel Oil

Daping Zhou,Haijun Wei,Zhiwen Tan,Shuye Xue,Ye Qiu,Shen Wu

Since the implementation of the sulfur cap legislation in 2020, marine very-low-sulfur fuel oil, often known as VLSFO, has become a crucial source of fuel for the contemporary shipping industry. However, both the production and utilization processes of VLSFO are plagued by the poor miscibility of the cutter fraction and the residual fraction, which can result in the precipitation of asphaltene. In this study, biodiesel was chosen as a cutter fraction to improve the stability and compatibility of asphaltene in VLSFO because of its environmental benefit and strong solubility. The average chemical structure of asphaltene derived from the marine low-sulfur fuel oil sample was analyzed using element analysis, FTIR,1HNMR, and time-flight spectroscopy. The composition of biodiesel was analyzed using GC-MS. It was found that the asphaltene had a feature of a short side chain, low H/C ratio, high aromaticity, and a high proportion of heteroatoms. Both laboratory experiments and molecular dynamic simulations were applied to investigate the dispersion effect and mechanism compared with other dispersants. The dispersion effect of biodiesel was studied using measurements of the initial precipitation point (IPP), dispersion improvement rate, and morphology of asphaltene in the model oil. Experimental results revealed that biodiesel was fully compatible with heavy fuel oil and that it can postpone the IPP from 46% to 54% and increase the dispersion improvement rate to 35%. Molecular dynamics (MDs) simulation results show that biodiesel can form strong interactions with the fused aromatics structures and heteroatoms in the asphaltene; such interactions can increase the solubility of asphaltene and acts as a “connection bridge” to promote the dispersion effect of asphaltene molecules. Keywords:biodiesel;marine very-low-sulfur fuel oil;asphaltene dispersion;average molecular structure;molecular dynamic simulation
