Unveiling the impact of membrane wetting on ammonia recovery through membrane contactor technology

Yuansheng Tang,Wentian Zheng,Guangxing Yang,Wei Bi,Fengmi Zeng,Lu Xiao,Xianhui Li

Membrane contactors as an emerging separation technology exhibit great potential for ammonia recovery due to the thermal and chemical stability. However, membrane wetting remains a significant challenge, hindering its broader industrial application. This study explores the effects of membrane wetting on the ammonia absorption rates through membrane contactor under varying operation conditions. The wetting depth was in-situ monitored by the ultrasonic technique. Results reveal that reducing the feed flow rate and lowering the absorbent concentration can effectively mitigate the decline in ammonia absorption rates, while increasing the feed pH does not affect the membrane wetting process but enhances the ammonia recovery. Furthermore, the rare-earth wastewater proves suitable for treatment via membrane contactor as it requires no additional low-surface-tension surfactant and has a higher ammonia concentration. Moreover, a developed model is conducted to elucidate the transport mechanism of ammonia through membrane contactor during wetting process. With the increased wetting depth during membrane contactor process, the boundary layer thickness gradually increased, significantly strengthening the transfer resistance. This study provides an insight into further understanding the ammonia mass transfer through membrane contactor under wetting conditions.

Ultrasonic-enhanced Fenton-like degradation of bisphenol A using a bio-synthesized schwertmannite catalyst

Xiang Li,Yongkui Zhang,Yi Xie,Yu Zeng,Panyu Li,Tonghui Xie,Yabo Wang

Schwertmannite (Sch) was synthesized by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and used as Fenton-like catalyst for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation combining with ultrasonic technology (US). Physicochemical characterizations showed that the bio-synthesized Sch particles had a pompon-like morphology with high BET surface area of 92.92   m 2 /g. The degradation reaction showed a two-stage pseudo-first-order kinetic process consisting of an induction period and a followed rapid degradation period. A synergistic effect existed between US and Sch on activating H 2 O 2 and the synergy factor was calculated to be 2.32. The catalytic efficiency of the system was mainly affected by pH, Sch dosage and temperature, but less relevant to H 2 O 2 concentration. Free OH radicals in the bulk solution were identified to be the dominant oxidant, which were produced by both heterogeneous and homogeneous processes. The promotional effect of US on Fenton-like degradation of BPA can be ascribed to the reasons of (1) increasing the radical generation by ultrasonic cavitation; (2) reducing the apparent activation energies of degradation reaction; (3) accelerating the dissolution of iron and (4) keeping the high surface area of catalyst by continuous surface cleaning. Ecotoxicity tests indicated lower toxicities of intermediates than BPA. In addition, Sch exhibited high reusability in the recycle study.

Application of Ultrasonic Technique for Cure Monitoring of Epoxy/Graphene Oxide–Carbon Nanotubes Composites

Zhao Jinchao,He Cui,Ren Liang,Huang Leping

A non-invasive ultrasonic transmission method was applied to on-line monitor the curing behavior of the nanocomposites based on epoxy matrix. Effects of dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the nanofiller on high frequency dynamic mechanical properties during curing process of the nanocomposites were discussed. The typical nanofillers, multi-wall carbon nanotubes (p-MWCNTs) were selected, which were doped with graphene oxides (GOs), and dispersed in epoxy resin. By measuring the velocity and attenuation coefficient of longitudinal ultrasonic waves throughout the entire curing cycle, the longitudinal storage modulus and loss tangent of the epoxy nanocomposites were obtained. And the curing kinetics of the epoxy matrix nanocomposites was analyzed based on the Hsich non-equilibrium fluctuation theory. The results proved that enhanced dispersion and interfacial bonding of the GO-MWCNTs with epoxy improved dynamic mechanical properties of the epoxy matrix nanocomposites, while made curing process accelerated. The proposed ultrasonic monitoring method could accurately evaluate the curing process of epoxy-matrix nanocomposites. In conclusion, this research offered a practical effective measurement method for monitoring of curing process of the thermosetting resin matrix nanocomposites.

Study on the non-destructive evaluation of overall particle dispersion within nanocomposites by nonlinear ultrasonic and its applicability

Shuo Zhang,Hanqing Wang,Li Cheng,Wei Fang,Yonglin Qiu,Lijun Yang,Ruijin Liao

The dispersion of nanoparticles in nanocomposites seriously affects the material properties. However, the current nanoparticle dispersibility assessment mainly relies on the microscopic imaging method, which has the limitations of being lossy and having a narrow detection area, and is unable to realize the assessment of the overall dispersibility of the particles in bulk materials. This article uses nonlinear ultrasonic technology (NLUS) to achieve the overall dispersion evaluation of nanoparticles. Theoretical and experimental results show that: the nanoparticles nonlinear coefficient (Δ β ) and the particle agglomeration degree ( K ) approximately satisfy the linear variation relationship (R 2  > 0.9), while the smaller the elastic modulus of the particles is, the larger the slope of the Δ β -K fitting function is; the results of the NLUS test are not affected by the factors of surface modification. The error between the NLUS nondestructive evaluation results of particle dispersion and the SEM lossy test results ranged from 3 % to 15 %. The single detection region of NLUS is a three-dimensional region of ultrasonic wave propagation and the single detection time is short, these features enable NLUS to be applied in the rapid non-destructive evaluation of the overall dispersion of large volume polymer-based nano-dielectric material particles.

Ultrasonic-assisted nanoencapsulation of kiwi leaves proanthocyanidins in liposome delivery system for enhanced biostability and bioavailability

Ji-Min Lv,Balarabe B. Ismail,Xing-Qian Ye,Xia-Yan Zhang,Ye Gu,Jian-Chu Chen

The poor biostability and bioavailability of proanthocyanidins limit their application. In this study, it was hypothesized that encapsulation in lecithin-based nanoliposomes using ultrasonic technology improves the above properties. Based on preliminary experiments, the effects of lecithin mass ratio (1–9%, wt.), pH (3.2–6.8), ultrasonic power (0–540 W), and time (0–10 min) on biostability and bioavailability of purified kiwi leaves proanthocyanidins (PKLPs) were determined. Nanoliposomes prepared optimally with lecithin (5%, wt.), pH = 3.2, ultrasonic power (270 W), and time (5 min) demonstrated a significantly ( p <  0.05) improved physicochemical stability, homogeneity, and high encapsulation efficiency (73.84%) relative to control. The PKLPs bioaccessibility during in vitro digestion increased by 2.28–3.07-fold, with a remarkable sustained release and delivery to the small intestine. Similar results were obtained by in vivo analyses, showing over 200% increase in PKLPs bioaccessibility compared to the control. Thus, PKLPs-loaded nanoliposomes are promising candidates for foods and supplements for novel applications.

Remotely disturbing bioelectrical homeostasis by nanoparticle-enabled intracellular electrical stimulation for wireless cancer therapy

Cairong Xiao,Lei Fan,Changhao Li,Lei Zhou,Chunlin Deng,Rumin Fu,Dafu Chen,Zhengao Wang,Jinxia Zhai,Guoxing Tan,Peng Yu,Chengyun Ning,Chuanbin Mao

Bioelectrical homeostasis plays critical roles in biological processes, but disturbing it for cancer therapy remains challenging due to the difficulty in electrically controlling cancer cells. Here we show that cell-internalized electroactive nanoparticles interrupt it in cancer cells to effectively treat cancer wirelessly. Specifically, K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 ferroelectric nanoparticles are polarized and then generate a voltage of approximately −60 mV in response to ultrasound. Hence, once endocytosed by cancer cells in tumors, these nanoparticles establish an intracellular electric field (iEF) under the remote activation by ultrasound irradiation (for only 3 min) from outside the body. The iEF then depolarizes cell membrane potentials, decreases mitochondrial membrane potentials, and overloads intracellular calcium ions, disturbing intracellular bioelectrical balance. This disturbance promotes cancer cell apoptosis, inhibiting the growth of different types of tumors (bone tumor and skin tumor) without adverse effects. It is noteworthy that iEF can specifically disrupt the bioelectric balance of tumor cells but has no effect on normal cells. Such wireless cancer therapy can be achieved by other ferroelectric nanoparticles (e.g., BaTiO 3 ). This work represents the first cancer treatment paradigm by intracellularly interrupting bioelectrical homeostasis remotely to cause cancer cell dysfunctions without electrode implantation and wire connection in vivo. It can also provide biologists with new tools for studying the role of disturbed bioelectrical homeostasis in cell fates and disease progression.

Biomimetic hybrid porous microspheres with plant membrane-wall structure for evaluating multiscale mechanisms of ultrasound-assisted mass transfer

Jiaheng Li,Wenjun Wang,Weidong Xu,Songfeng Yu,Ruiling Lv,Jianwei Zhou,Donghong Liu

Determination of mass transfer during ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) has always been a challenge, not to mention the novel breakthrough of mechanisms for its positive effects. Herein, versatile porous microspheres (PM) with membrane-wall structure like plant tissues, which were made from sodium alginate/polyacrylamide dual crosslinking gels loaded with liposomes, were prepared to reveal the micro mass transfer effects during UAE. Results showed that prepared PM kept stable microstructure during extraction and ultrasound significantly accelerated the pore diffusion rather than surface diffusion. This effect resulted in higher UAE efficiency of PM with 60 % porosity than solid microspheres (143.72 to 155.47 mg/L), and the finding can be further explained as the accelerated internal diffusion (14.25 %) under ultrasound treatment. Moreover, multi-physics coupling simulations were performed to elucidate the enhanced pore flow and UAE efficiency. Acoustic streaming induced by cavitation effect increased the seepage velocity within the PM, and the pore structure would undergo compression and expansion deformation with alternated acoustic pressure due to its elastic characteristic. Both microscale effects improved the mass transfer and increase the UAE efficiency without structural damage from cavitation. This study fills the UAE mechanisms from micro view and provides a novel method for the study of vital micro processes.

Boosting the electrochemiluminescence of luminol-O2 system by high-intensity focused ultrasound

Zhang Huixin,Du Lin,Wei Zhihao,Wang Xuemei,Sojic Neso,Zhou Xin,Wang Zonghua

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of luminol is a well-established methodology in analytical chemistry and bioimaging. Developing novel strategies to enhance the ECL signal of this model emitter is a challenging but rewarding task. In this work, we introduced the high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), as a pretreatment means and a non-invasive way to trigger and boost the ECL signal with a 40-fold significant enhancement in the luminol-O 2 system without the addition of exogenous co-reactants. The superoxide anion (O 2 −• ) generated in situ by HIFU was the key initiator for boosting the ECL emission as demonstrated in this study for the first time. This promising co-reactant-free strategy could find potential applications for ultrasensitive ECL detection in the analysis of complex biological entities. Graphical abstract

CDCP1-targeted nanoparticles encapsulating phase-shift perfluorohexan for molecular US imaging in vitro

Zhao Meng,Zhu Yunkai,Zhang Yanhua,Yang Xupeng,Duan Yourong,Chen Yaqing,Sun Ying

BACKGROUND:Molecular targeted contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging is a potential imaging strategy to improve the diagnostic accuracy of conventional ultrasound (US) imaging. US contrast agents are usually micrometer-sized and non-target gas bubbles while nano-sized and targeted agents containing phase-shift materials absorb more attractions for their size and the liquid core and excellent molecular imaging effect. METHODS:PLGA12k-mPEG2k-NH2, DSPE-mPEG2k and perfluorohexan (PFH) were used to construct a new targeted ultrasound contrast agent with CUB domain-containing protein 1 (CDCP1) receptor for the detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer. The potential of tumor-targeted nanoparticles (CDCP1-targeted perfluorohexan-loaded phase-transitional nanoparticles, anti-CDCP1 NPs) as contrast agents for ultrasound (US) imaging was assessed in vitro. Moreover, studies on the cytotoxicity and the targeting ability of anti-CDCP1 NPs assisted by US were carried out. RESULTS:The results showed that anti-CDCP1 NPs had low cytotoxicity, and with the increasing of polymer concentration in anti-CDCP1 NPs, the CEUS imaging of agent gradually enhanced, and enhanced imaging associated with the length of observing time. Furthermore, it was testified that anti-CDCP1 assisted the agent to target cells expressing CDCP1, which demonstrated the active targeting of anti-CDCP1 NPs in vitro. CONCLUSION:All in all, the feasibility of using targeted anti-CDCP1 NPs to enhance ultrasound imaging has been demonstrated in vitro, which laid a solid foundation for molecular US imaging in vivo, and anti-CDCP1 NPs might have a great clinical application prospect.

In-vivo programmable acoustic manipulation of genetically engineered bacteria

Yang Ye,Yang Yaozhang,Liu Dingyuan,Wang Yuanyuan,Lu Minqiao,Zhang Qi,Huang Jiqing,Li Yongchuan,Ma Teng,Yan Fei,Zheng Hairong

Acoustic tweezers can control target movement through the momentum interaction between an acoustic wave and an object. This technology has advantages over optical tweezers for in-vivo cell manipulation due to its high tissue penetrability and strong acoustic radiation force. However, normal cells are difficult to acoustically manipulate because of their small size and the similarity between their acoustic impedance and that of the medium. In this study, we use the heterologous expression of gene clusters to generate genetically engineered bacteria that can produce numerous sub-micron gas vesicles in the bacterial cytoplasm. We show that the presence of the gas vesicles significantly enhances the acoustic sensitivity of the engineering bacteria, which can be manipulated by ultrasound. We find that by employing phased-array-based acoustic tweezers, the engineering bacteria can be trapped into clusters and manipulated in vitro and in vivo via electronically steered acoustic beams, enabling the counter flow or on-demand flow of these bacteria in the vasculature of live mice. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the aggregation efficiency of engineering bacteria in a tumour is improved by utilizing this technology. This study provides a platform for the in-vivo manipulation of live cells, which will promote the progress of cell-based biomedical applications.

Downregulation of GSK-3β Expression via Ultrasound-Targeted Microbubble Destruction Enhances Atherosclerotic Plaque Stability in New Zealand Rabbits

Lifei Yang,Lingzi Chen,Ye Fang,Suya Ma

Accumulating evidence suggests that atherosclerosis (AS) is the underlying cause of vascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke. Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) technology provides a tolerable, efficient and effective system for drug delivery and gene transfection, which has broad application prospects in the treatment of AS. In addition, glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β has been implicated as a potentially valuable therapeutic agent for AS treatment; however, the specific molecular mechanisms remain unknown. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the effect of downregulation of GSK-3β expression via UTMD on atherosclerotic plaque stability. We established a THP-1 macrophage-derived foam cell model in vitro and an atherosclerotic plaque model in the right common carotid artery of New Zealand rabbits. We determined levels of the relevant vulnerable plaque stability elements. The results indicate that GSK-3β was upregulated in the foam cells and in atherosclerotic rabbits. Downregulation of GSK-3β expression by UTMD suppressed vulnerable plaque factors and inflammation in vitro and in vivo , changed the cytoskeleton of the foam cells in vitro , increased Young's modulus and decreased the peak intensity of atherosclerotic plaque in vivo . Moreover, GSK-3β inhibition by UTMD did not influence the viability of the foam cells. Collectively, our results indicate that GSK-3β could be a potential target for anti-atherogenic interventions and, in particular, can improve the stability of AS plaques in combination with UTMD.

Physicochemical properties of chitosan-based emulsions containing Ocimum gratissimum essential oil prepared by multifrequency ultrasound-assisted homogenization technique

Wang Yan,Xie Yao,Zhang Chi,Mei Jun,Xie Jing

The objective of this study is to investigate the optimal ultrasonic power for producing microemulsions with Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil and to evaluate their physicochemical properties. The effects of three powers (125 W, 250 W, 375 W) on chitosan-based Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil emulsion were examined by multi-frequency ultrasound-assisted homogenization. The results indicated that the physicochemical properties of chitosan-based Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil emulsion were optimized under ultrasonic-assisted homogenization of three frequencies (20, 28, and 40 kHz combined) at 125 W for 15 min. Compared to the control group, significant reductions in particle size were observed in the emulsion treated with 125 W multi-frequency ultrasound (average particle size was 1.87 ± 0.01 μm; zeta potential was 13 ± 0.53 mV). Furthermore, the stability and antioxidant activity of the emulsion showed marked improvements (the scavenging rates of DPPH and ABTS increased to 87.57% and 81.71%, respectively). In addition, scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy images revealed that 125 W multi-frequency ultrasonic-assisted homogenization emulsion droplets were evenly distributed and exhibited the highest encapsulation effect. These findings provide valuable insights into developing food-grade chitosan-based emulsions containing Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil for functional food production. Graphical abstract
