Efficient Coating Method via Matching Rough Surface of Stainless Steel with Al2O3 Particles

Chi Ma,Yong Luo,Bao-Chang Sun,Meng-Jun Su,Guang-Wen Chu,Jian-Feng Chen

An efficient method of coating alumina (Al2O3) on stainless steel has been investigated by matching the rough surface of the substrate with different sizes of Al2O3 particles. An empirical correlation was established based upon the data of a controllable and measured pore size of the substrate surface by varying etching conditions. The correlation agreed fairly well with experimental results (deviations of ±20%). The Al2O3 coatings prepared by powders with average particle size of 324 nm had an optimal adhesion performance, and the minimum of coating weight loss on the inner surface of tubule after ultrasonic vibration was 1.7 wt %. The developed method of Al2O3 coating has potential prospects for the preparation of monolithic catalyst support.

Bi-MOFs with two different morphologies promoting degradation of organic dye under simultaneous photo-irradiation and ultrasound vibration treatment

Shanghai Dong,Liying Wang,Weiyi Lou,Yunxin Shi,Zhenzhu Cao,Yongfeng Zhang,Junmin Sun

For the first time, piezocatalysis activity has been observed in bismuth-based MOFs (ultrasound vibration treatment) with two different morphologies, namely FCAU-17 (flakes) and CAU-17 (rods). CAU-17 and FCAU-17 were synthesized by solvothermal and ultrasonic methods, respectively, with the same organic ligand (1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) and metal salt (Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O). Among these, the apparent rate constant k of CAU-17 in piezo-photocatalysis is 3.9 × 10 −2  min −1 , which is ∼3.9 and ∼ 1.5 times of those in photocatalysis and piezocatalysis, respectively. CAU-17 showed much high piezo-photocatalytic activity during degradation of RhB. Efficiently coupling between piezocatalysis and photocatalysis has been realized in rod-like CAU-17 (ultrasound vibration treatment). Our results provide a new strategy to improve catalytic performance of Bi MOFs through an efficient synergistic piezo-photocatalysis approach for environmental remediation.

Piezo-catalysis for nondestructive tooth whitening

Wang Yang,Wen Xinrong,Jia Yanmin,Huang Ming,Wang Feifei,Zhang Xuehui,Bai Yunyang,Yuan Guoliang,Wang Yaojin

The increasing demand for a whiter smile has resulted in an increased popularity for tooth whitening procedures. The most classic hydrogen peroxide-based whitening agents are effective, but can lead to enamel demineralization, gingival irritation, or cytotoxicity. Furthermore, these techniques are excessively time-consuming. Here, we report a nondestructive, harmless and convenient tooth whitening strategy based on a piezo-catalysis effect realized by replacement of abrasives traditionally used in toothpaste with piezoelectric particles. Degradation of organic dyes via piezo-catalysis of BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanoparticles was performed under ultrasonic vibration to simulate daily tooth brushing. Teeth stained with black tea, blueberry juice, wine or a combination thereof can be notably whitened by the poled BTO turbid liquid after vibration for 3 h. A similar treatment using unpoled or cubic BTO show negligible tooth whitening effect. Furthermore, the BTO nanoparticle-based piezo-catalysis tooth whitening procedure exhibits remarkably less damage to both enamel and biological cells.

Chemical mechanical polishing of silicon carbide (SiC) based on coupling effect of ultrasonic vibration and catalysis

Gaopan Chen,Liyan Pan,Haimei Luo,Yan Zhou,Guihai Luo,Guoshun Pan

Polishing SiC is a difficult task due to its exceptional chemical stability and high hardness. While the strong catalytic performance resulting from the coupling effect of ultrasonic vibration and catalysis is well-known, there have been limited studies on its effectiveness for SiC chemical mechanical polishing. To address this gap, we present a novel approach that utilizes the coupling of ultrasonic vibration and catalysis for SiC polishing. The hydroxyl free radical (*OH) generated by coupling effect is analyzed using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV–VIS) to screen for a catalyst that matches ultrasonic vibration and establish a high-performance catalytic coupling system. The use of ultrasonic vibration in SiC polishing results in a significant increase in catalytic efficiency, with a doubling effect observed. Additionally, the catalyst itself increases ultrasonic efficiency by 43.1 %, leading to a substantial improvement in material removal rate ( MRR ). We study the impact of the placement of the ultrasonic vibration device on MRR and evaluate the performance of the coupling system used for polishing. Also, we delved into the removal mechanism of SiC by utilizing XPS and nyquist plots. Our findings reveal a maximum MRR of 214.6 nm/h, which improves the efficiency of commercial slurry by 80.0 %. Furthermore, the proposed strategy increases the MRR of commercial slurry by more than 70 % in the time range of 0–1 h, 1–2 h, and 0–2 h. The surface roughness ( Ra ) measured by AFM using a scanning area of 1 × 1 µm 2 at sub-angstrom scale ( Ra =0.0627 nm) is achieved. This study significantly improves the polishing efficiency of commercial slurry and has great application prospects.

Piezo-modulated interface field facilitating hydroxyl radical formation of SrTiO3/ZnO heterojunction for water purification

Shenyu Lan,Chuan Yu,Yawen Peng,Xiaonan Hu,Wei Yan,Xiang Cui,Mingshan Zhu,Chunyang Zhai

Piezo-modulated interface engineering is an effective method for tuning the charge transfer process to enhance piezocatalytic dynamics. In this study, SrTiO 3 /ZnO heterojunctions were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal methods to degrade carbamazepine in water. The optimal SrTiO 3 /ZnO-5 % sample exhibited a remarkable 99.9 % degradation efficiency of carbamazepine within 60 min under ultrasonic vibration. The piezocatalytic reaction rate ( k value = 0.0746 min −1 ) was 4.63 times and 10.97 times higher than that of pure SrTiO 3 and pure ZnO, respectively. Reactive species scavenger tests, electron paramagnetic resonance techniques, and bands gap analysis revealed that the enhanced activity can be attributed to the construction of an interfacial electric field in SrTiO 3 /ZnO heterojunctions and the modification of an internal piezoelectric polarized field. This allowed charge redistribution and transport across the SrTiO 3 /ZnO heterojunction interface, and facilitated the generation of hydroxyl radicals (HO • ) through simultaneous hole oxidation and electron reduction. This study provides a comprehensive mechanistic understanding about piezoelectric heterojunctions in the catalytic redox reactions, and offers valuable insights for designing more effective piezoelectric heterojunctions for the degradation of pharmaceutical organic pollutants.

Performance and mechanism of multi-method driven piezocatalysis on PNN-PT based catalysts

Xuechen Liu,Mingwen Wang,Shuai Yang,Xuexin Li,Kailai Lu,Yang Li,Juru Zhang,Jie Wu,Linghang Wang,Jinglei Li,Fei Li

Piezocatalysis presents an innovative catalytic technique that utilizes the piezoelectric properties of catalysts to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, thereby driving chemical processes. While various methods for driving piezocatalytic reactions have been developed, there is a notable absence of comprehensive research on piezocatalytic performance across multiple methods. In this context, this study explores the potential of (1- x )Pb(Ni 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 - x PbTiO 3 (PNN-PT) based catalysts as efficient piezocatalysts using both ultrasonic vibration and ball milling . The optimal reaction rate constants of the PNN-PT piezocatalyst under ultrasonic vibration and ball milling are found to be 0.0775 min −1 and 0.0265 min −1 , respectively. Notably, PNN-PT-based catalysts exhibit outstanding catalytic activity up to ultra-high substrate concentrations (65 mg/L), suggesting possible industrial applications. The exploration of the reaction mechanism indicates that •OH is the main reactive radical, the catalytic reaction activity demonstrates a direct relationship with •OH quenching, and the high •OH generation rate of PNN-PT further illustrated their suitability as environmental purification catalysts.

Effectively enhanced piezocatalytic activity in flower-like 2H-MoS2 with tunable S vacancy towards organic pollutant degradation

Rui Li,Shuoyang Liang,Aikelaimu Aihemaiti,Shun Li,Zuotai Zhang

Piezocatalysis technology is emerging as a promising strategy for removing organic pollutants from water by harvesting mechanical energy from the surrounding environment. Herein, 2H-MoS 2 flower-like nanosheets with tunable S vacancies was synthesized via a hydrothermal method by adjusting pH of the precursor solution, Mo and S molar ratio, reaction time and temperature. The results showed that the presence of S vacancy leads to significantly enhanced piezoelectric response in the MoS 2 nanosheets, as confirmed by both theoretical calculation using first-principle based density functional theory and probe force microscopy (PFM) measurements. As a result, the as-obtained MoS 2 nanoflower piezocatalyst exhibited excellent degradation efficiency for Orange Ⅱ solution (removal rate > 95 % in 1 h) under ultrasonic vibration (40 kHz and 110 W). Importantly, we demonstrated for the first time that the piezocatalytic performance was tightly related with the water level in ultrasonic cleaner. The present work not only reports a simple and effective strategy for improving the piezocatalytic degradation activity of MoS 2 by introducing vacancy, but also provides new insights and deeper understanding on the underlying mechanism.

Boosting the piezocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6 nanosheets towards the degradation of organic pollutants

Aize Hao,Xueer Ning,Yali Cao,Jing Xie,Dianzeng Jia

A novel piezocatalyst, Bi2WO6 nanosheets (BWO NS), has been successfully synthesized by a simple, green and harmless solid-state chemistry method. The BWO NS present excellent piezocatalytic activity in contrast with other piezocatalysts towards methylene blue organic pollutant degradation under ultrasonic vibration. The piezocatalytic efficiency of BWO NS reaches ∼96% after 35 min and they exhibit good recycling performance, suggesting great potential for wastewater dye decolorization treatment. Superoxide radicals (˙O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) are the main active species during the piezocatalytic process, based on ESR measurements and fluorescence spectra. The induced generation of polarized electric charges in the piezocatalytic process has also been demonstrated. The piezocatalytic mechanism has been further revealed, indicating that the excellent piezocatalytic activity could be attributed to the piezoelectric effect inducing electric charges to accelerate carrier transport during chemical redox reactions. Our work could offer new guidance for designing novel piezocatalysts and shed light on the relationships between piezocatalytic properties and mechanisms for application in pollutant degradation and energy conversion.

Silver modified barium titanate as a highly efficient piezocatalyst

Enzhu Lin,Jiang Wu,Ni Qin,Baowei Yuan,Dinghua Bao

As a new catalytic effect, piezocatalysis has attracted much attention due to its ability to degrade organic pollutants under mechanical vibration. However, improving the efficiency of piezocatalysis still remains a challenge. Here, we report an efficient route to enhance the piezocatalytic performance of BaTiO3 by surface modification with Ag nanoparticles (NPs). The Ag NPs were deposited by a facile in situ photo-reduction method. The piezocatalytic efficiency of the as-prepared samples was investigated by monitoring the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under ultrasonic vibration in the dark. The results indicate that the Ag loaded BaTiO3 particles show greatly enhanced piezocatalytic activity for degradation of MO molecules. A suitable amount of Ag deposition gives the highest piezocatalytic activity, while a higher Ag loading leads to reduced piezocatalytic activity. The degradation of MO and the possible by-products as well as the active radical species generated in the piezocatalytic system were investigated systematically. Based on the experimental results, a mechanism was proposed to explain the enhancement effect of Ag NPs on the piezocatalytic performance of BaTiO3. The strategy presented here provides a promising route towards the development of high-efficiency piezocatalysts for actual applications.

Efficiently harvesting the ultrasonic vibration energy of two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride for piezocatalytic degradation of dichlorophenols

Hua Lei,Meixuan Wu,Fan Mo,Shilong Ji,Xiaoping Dong,Yanmin Jia,Feifei Wang,Zheng Wu

Mechanical energy harvesting by piezoelectric materials to drive catalysis reactions has recently received extensive attention for fuel production and environmental remediation. It has been well known that some two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin structures which are not piezoelectric in bulk become intrinsically piezoelectric because of the loss of centrosymmetry. In this work, we synthesized a nanosheet-like 2D g-C3N4 catalyst with a thickness of 3–5 nm that showed a significant piezoelectric response. The ultrasound-vibration-induced interior piezoelectric field drove electrons and holes to migrate in opposite directions towards the surface of nanosheets, leading to the formation of active species. This 2D g-C3N4 presented excellent piezocatalytic performance for the degradation of dichlorophenols, and the decomposition efficiency for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP) and 2,6-dichlorophenol (2,6-DCP) reached 98.5%, 85.5%, and 72.1%, respectively, after a 150 min ultrasonic treatment. Furthermore, the good stability and reusability of the 2D g-C3N4 were demonstrated, and a possible degradation pathway was proposed based on the determined intermediates. The findings in this work clearly reveal that the metal-free 2D g-C3N4 should be a promising catalyst to efficiently remove organic pollutants from the environment.

Effective enhancement of piezocatalytic activity of BaTiO3 nanowires under ultrasonic vibration

Jiang Wu,Ni Qin,Dinghua Bao

Piezocatalysis is a catalytic effect driven by the stress-induced electricity of piezoelectric crystallites . In this study, piezoelectric BaTiO 3 nanowires and nanoparticles were synthesized and their piezocatalytic activity was investigated. The BaTiO 3 nanowires exhibit effectively enhanced piezocatalytic activity under ultrasonic vibration compared with the BaTiO 3 nanoparticles. On the basis of the piezoelectric potential analysis by finite element method simulation for BaTiO 3 nanowires and nanoparticles under ultrasonic vibration, the enhanced piezocatalytic activity of the BaTiO 3 nanowires can be attributed to the larger piezoelectric potential along the polar axis. In addition, we also demonstrate that the intrinsic charge carriers (not piezoelectric charges) in piezoelectric crystallites play the role of charge transfer in the catalysis process through regulating the concentration of charge carriers. Our work provides further understanding of piezocatalysis of piezoelectric nanomaterials as well as insights on the relationship between piezoelectric potential and piezocatalysis.

Piezocatalytic performance of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 nanoparticles for degradation of organic pollutants

Lu Shi,Chunxiao Lu,Lirong Chen,Qiwei Zhang,Yong Li,Tiejun Zhang,Xihong Hao

Piezocatalysis has been considered as a promising technology in water pollution treatment. In this work, a series of piezoelectric Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 (NBT) nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal method using different titanium sources as titanium precursors. The piezocatalytic performances of the NBT nanoparticles were investigated by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) with the concentration of 10 mg/L under ultrasonic vibration. It is found that the NBT nanoparticles prepared by using anatase titanium oxide as titanium precursor show optimum piezocatalytic activity and the rate constant of 0.022 min −1 is achieved for RhB. The initial RhB concentration, ultrasonic power, particles size and specific surface area of NBT materials play an important role in optimizing the piezocatalytic performance. Moreover, the NBT nanoparticles show a satisfactory stability and reusability for the piezocatalytic degradation. The piezocatalytic mechanism of NBT nanoparticles was elucidated by the identification of free radicals and intermediates in the degradation process. The work provides a guidance to design and develop new high-performance piezocatalysts.
