Unravelling intercalation-regulated nanoconfinement for durably ultrafast sieving graphene oxide membranes

Jing Guo,Hongfei Bao,Yanqiu Zhang,Xi Shen,Jang-Kyo Kim,Jun Ma,Lu Shao

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes with unique sieving channels composing of galleries in stacked GO nanosheets , are promising for advanced separations towards environmental and energy remediation. Although GO membranes can be bridged by molecules to enhance the stability as well as separation capacity, the subtle alterations of GO stacking and the resulting changes of sieving channel structures induced by molecular intercalation failed to be delicately revealed. Herein, molecular intercalations are employed to generate spatial confinement on GO assembling and thus the structures of sieving channels are regulated. Moreover, different-sized intercalants are demonstrated display significant effects on GO stacking. Small-sized molecules facilitate in-plane orientation while large-sized molecules are inclined to inhibit the overlap, leading to a lower degree of alignment and a shorter transmembrane pathway and eventually a higher permeability. On this basis, the deliberately nanostructured GO membrane with both the superior robustness even under ultrasonication and an ultrafast water permeance surpassing 5 times than pristine GO membrane, is built by intercalation with optimal-sized molecules. This study provides the practical insights on realizing 2D GO material for cutting-edge separations.

Bioinspired nanobubble water channel membranes for ultrafast osmosis desalination

Lu Zhang,Fu Liu,Jianqiang Wang,Haibo Lin,Qiu Han

Biological water channels (BWCs) and artificial water channels (AWCs) exhibit standout water-to-ion selectivity. However, difficult membrane integration threatened their desalination application. Inspired by biological cell membranes , an ultrafast osmosis desalination membrane is fabricated with air nanobubbles adhered on fluorinated carbon nanotubes (ANBs-FCNTs) interlayer sandwiched between polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber layers. Water transport through nanobubble water channel is accelerated by nanobubble gating for selective transport and nanobubble-lubricated water channels for low friction, which was confirmed by varying combination modes of forward osmosis (FO) and membrane distillation (MD). Superior salt rejection is achieved by efficient nanobubble gating, resulting from the combined action by size screening, fast surface slip, electrostatic shielding and sufficient adsorption of ANBs-FCNTs interlayer. In nanofluidic diode membrane concatenation model, multistep capillary force provides enhanced water flux, whereas multi-staged concatenation layers offer more barrier gating for the ion's diffusion, thus resulting in higher permselectivity. The bioinspired nanobubble membranes can achieve high water flux (479.8 L m −2  h −1 ), high rejection (>95%) to solutes and low reverse salt flux (0.686 g m −2  h −1 ) under robust and continuous cross flow operation, which outperformed the state-of-the-art forward osmosis membranes . The electrospinning and deposition technique allows for scalable membrane preparation for desalination, resources and energy production.

Large-pore covalent organic frameworks for ultra-fast tight ultrafiltration (TUF)

Siyu Fang,Xiansong Shi,Xingyuan Wang,Zhe Zhang,Congcong Yin,Zhipeng Zhang,Tong Ju,Sen Xiong,Yong Wang

Tight ultrafiltration (TUF) membranes featuring specific pore sizes are increasingly developed to bridge the gap between nanofiltration and ultrafiltration. So far, a wealth of efforts has been devoted to tackle the limitation found in TUF, but there still lacks a facile accessibility to upgrade TUF membranes with simultaneously improved permeance and selectivity. Herein, we report a large-pore covalent organic framework (LP-COF) as the building material to prepare ultra-permeable TUF membranes for fast separations. The LP-COF layers with an exceptionally large aperture size of up to ~3.6 nm are synthesized on macroporous substrates through a unidirectional diffusion method. The resultant LP-COF layers show a moderate crystallinity and low thickness down to ~60 nm, and allow ultrafast water permeation. Surprisingly, the optimal LP-COF membrane exhibits an unprecedented water permeance of ~3147 L m −2  h −1 MPa −1 with a high Congo red rejection (~92.6%), which is basically unchanged after several cycles of filtration. Moreover, the large-pore channels enable an unimpeded pass of ions, thus affording the membrane an excellent dye/salt separation competence, and largely exceeding state-of-the-art membranes. Therefore, this work opens up a new opportunity in producing high-performance TUF membranes by large-pore COFs for rapid and precise separations.

Retrievable ultrafast covalent triazine framework membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration

Guiliang Li,Yang Liu,Zhaoyi He,Ke Shi,Fu Liu

Covalent organic frameworks (COF) membranes are considered as promising candidates for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) due to their well-defined porosity, high perm-selectivity, and exceptional resistance to solvents. However, irreversible membrane fouling caused by filter cake layers or pore clogging challenges the robust separation over long-term operation especially for well-known COF membranes. Here, we present novel ultrafast covalent triazine frameworks (CTF) membranes with retrievable separation performances for OSN processes. CTF-1 membrane with unitary nanopore and CTF-m membrane with binary nanopore are fabricated via an air-organic solvent interfacial polymerization technique for comparison, which demonstrates molecular-level selectivity (MWCO, ∼320 Da for CTF-1 and ∼ 625 Da for CTF-m) and ultrafast permeability for polar organic solvents. Moreover, the heterogeneous skeleton nanopores structure of CTF-m membranes facilitates efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, thus resulting in retrievable permselectivity. This work offers an efficient strategy via Donor-Acceptor structure modulation to tackle OSN membrane fouling, paving the way for applications of framework membranes.
