Yin-Yang membrane with dual superwettabilities for controllable separation of complex oil/water mixtures

Long Jiao,Yuhang Huang,Yanjun Hu,Yijing Yang,Huize Chen,Nan Zhou,Qianqian Guo,Huaping Wu,Ao Xia,Xingang Zhao,Guohua Hu,Rong Chen

Oil spill incidents and massive discharge of oily industrial wastewater have a profound negative impact on the global water ecosystem. Super-wettable membranes have emerged as a promising solution for oil/water separation. However, challenges arise when this technique is applied to different kinds of oily wastewater, especially triphase heavy oil/light oil/water mixtures, because of the membranes’ single function and limited applicability. Drawing inspiration from the Taiji diagram, we proposed a novel ‘Yin-Yang’ membrane (YYM) with dual superwettabilities to address these challenges. The unique dual superwettabilities make it possible to precisely independently adjust the wetting film and the corresponding liquid permeability at the Yin and Yang regions through the controllable pre-wetting. The YYM could achieve continuous separation with a high efficiency (over 99.1 %) and a large total flux (over 54.4 × 10 3 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) for triphase oil/water mixtures, regardless of liquid species and densities. Proof-of-concept experiments highlight the noticeable biocompatibility of YYM-filtrated water from hypertoxic oily wastewater. The YYMs enlighten the design of new super-wettable materials for use in hazardous waste elimination and water ecological restoration.

Fabrication of superwetting, antimicrobial and conductive fibrous membranes for removing/collecting oil contaminants

Ming Zhang,Chengyu Wang,Yinghua Ma,Xiling Du,Yanhua Shi,Jian Li,Junyou Shi

In order to remove/collect organic contaminants from polluted water, polypyrrole/silver nanoparticles (PPy/Ag NPs) have been loaded onto spandex fabric using the method of in situ redox-oxidation polymerization to achieve a specific membrane. Observations showed that the original hydrophobic fabric became superhydrophilic and superoleophobic underwater (with an underwater oil contact angle (OCA) of 160°). The as-prepared specimen could effectively remove the oil from an oil-in-water emulsion. After further hydrophobic modification, the specimen was transformed into a fabric that possessed durable superhydrophobicity and superlipophilicity (with a water contact angle (WCA) of 159°), which could collect the oil from a water-in-oil emulsion. Apparently, the two types of fibrous membranes completely satisfied the conditions for removing/collecting organic contaminants from opposite types of water/oil mixtures. The durable evaluation results exhibited the outstanding resistance of both fibrous membranes to friction and acidic and basic scouring agents. Additionally, the multifunctional fabric membrane also possessed excellent electrical conductivity and antibacterial activities towards S. aureus, B. subtilis, and E. coli, which will greatly promote developments in the textile industry and provide a bright future for fabric-based materials.

Mussel-inspired cotton fabric with pH-responsive superwettability for bidirectional oil–water separation

Liao Xiaofeng,Li Hongqiang,Su Xiaojing,Zhan Haomiao,Lai Xuejun,Zeng Xingrong

With the deteriorating environmental pollution by oil spill accidents and industrial sewage emissions, stimuli-responsive superwettable materials have been of considerable interest for its intriguing application in oil–water separation. Herein, we report a facile room temperature method to fabricate mussel-inspired cotton fabric with pH-responsive superwettability, by combining in situ generation of silver particles to construct roughness with self-assembly of long alkyl thiols terminated with methyl and carboxyl groups to endow hydrophobicity and responsiveness. The fabricated pH-responsive cotton fabric showed superhydrophobicity with water contact angle (WCA) up to 153° under acidic and neutral conditions while superhydrophilicity with WCA at 0° under alkaline condition. Importantly, the cotton fabric was successfully applied in bidirectional oil–water separation, exhibiting high separation efficiency and excellent reversibility. Furthermore, the pH-responsive cotton fabric also demonstrated superior self-cleaning property and antibacterial activity to E. coli and S. aureus . Our method to construct pH-responsive cotton fabric is simple, and no special techniques, chemicals or control of atmosphere is required. Our findings conceivably stand out as a new tool to fabricate functional superwettable materials and surfaces with responsiveness to external stimuli for various oil-pollution treatments and other potential applications.

A durable superwetting clusters-inlayed mesh with high efficiency and flux for emulsion separation

Jihao Zuo,Zihan Liu,Cailong Zhou,Yi Zhou,Xiufang Wen,Shouping Xu,Jiang Cheng,Pihui Pi

How to rapidly and efficiently separate surfactant-stabilized emulsions has been a great challenge for oil/water separation materials. In this work, a durable superwetting copper mesh with high efficiency and flux for gravity-driven emulsion separation was fabricated by subtly inlaying polydopamine/polyethyleneimine@aminated carbon nanotubes (PDA/PEI@CNTs-NH 2 ) clusters in the mesh pores. The porous clusters with abundant cationic groups render the mesh with superwettability, submicron permeation channels and positive charges, so as to achieve strong demulsification ability. Based on the superwettability and the strong demulsification ability, the PDA/PEI@CNTs-NH 2 clusters-inlayed copper mesh (PPC-CM) exhibited high separation efficiency of over 99.5% for various anionic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. Meanwhile, the permeation flux of PPC-CM solely driven by gravity is as high as 3946.3 L m −2  h −1 . The strong demulsification ability and high permeation flux of the superwetting mesh are due to the synergistic action of charge-screening effect of -NH 3+ and size-sieving effect of optimized pore size. Furthermore, the resultant mesh exhibited excellent durability that it could resist serious physical abrasion and chemical corrosion. Especially the mesh after repeated separation can recover its positive charge by a simple acid treatment. These excellent performances highlight the superwetting mesh a promising potential for sustainable separation of highly stabilized oil/water emulsions.

Yitong Pang,Guoying Mei,Fengyi Wang,Ao Fu,Zhiguang Guo

Water scarcity has become a serious global issue due to frequent global climate extremes such as warming, storms, floods and droughts. Developing highly efficient water-harvesting materials to collect freshwater from mist is a potential solution to solving the issue. Herein, a series of superwetting copper materials with excellent mist collecting efficiencies were successfully prepared via facile etching, modification, laser-scanning and plating methods. The sample surfaces showed unique wettability and structure characteristics that numbers of hydrophilic humps were regularly arrayed and embed into the superhydrophobic surface with nanorod structures. The surface structure, chemical composition of the superwetting copper materials were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. Excellent mist collection efficiency of the fabricated superwetting copper materials was verified by mist collection tests. In addition, the enhancing mechanism of mist collecting behavior on the superwetting copper surface was analyzed. The excellent mist collecting performance of the prepared surfaces exhibited promising potential to achieve mist collecting materials.

A pH-responsive PVDF membrane with superwetting properties for the separation of oil and water

Yanhui Xiang,Jianhui Shen,Yunze Wang,Fu Liu,Lixin Xue

Responsive materials with surfaces that have controllable oil wettability under water offer considerable potential in advanced applications. We have developed an economical and convenient method for constructing a superwetting polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane, giving super-hydrophobicity under oil and super-oleophobicity under water. The membrane has been achieved by incorporating pH-responsive N,N-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate (DMAEMA) hydrogels into PVDF using a combination of in situ polymerization and conventional phase separation. In pure or acidic water the poly-DMAEMA chains modify wettability by the protonation or deprotonation of their tertiary amine side-groups, affecting the wettability of the membrane under water. In addition, this responsive membrane has been utilized for the separation of surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions. High flux and separation efficiency can be obtained, together with excellent antifouling properties, suggesting that the membranes will find wide application in the separation of oil and water systems.

Femtosecond laser engineered eggshell membrane for durable oil/water separation under harsh conditions

Lei Xia,Faze Chen,Jiaqi Chao,Du Zhang,Yanling Tian,Dawei Zhang

Membranes with super-wettability have been widely used to treat oily wastewater, but the construction of most of these membranes involves the use of corrosive and even toxic chemicals, and they often exhibit poor chemical durability. Therefore, green and durable super-wetting membranes are urgently required for remediating oily wastewater under harsh conditions. In this study, we report an eggshell membrane (ESM) with super-wettability as a green and durable candidate for efficient oil/water separation under harsh conditions. Specifically, naturally hydrophilic chicken ESMs are directly roughened and drilled using a femtosecond laser, without using any chemicals. Laser-engineered ESMs (LEESMs) possess superhydrophilicity in air and superoleophobicity under water, which renders them capable of separating immiscible oil/water mixtures after they are pre-wetted using water. Results show that the pre-wetted LEESM can cyclically treat various oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of >98.6% and water flux of >10000 L·m -2 ·h -1 . Because of the inherent chemical resistance of ESM itself, the LEESMs show excellent durability towards highly corrosive aqueous solutions such as HCl (1 M), NaOH (1 M), and saturated NaCl solution (26.5 wt %). The LEESM retained its underwater superoleophobicity after being immersed in these corrosive solutions for 12 h; therefore, it could be used to separate mixtures of toluene and corrosive solutions efficiently for more than 10 cycles, demonstrating remarkable durability and recyclability in terms of oil/water separation under harsh conditions. Moreover, when the LEESM is pre-wetted or contaminated by oils, it can be easily cleaned by immersing in water, thereby restoring its underwater superoleophobicity and oil/water separation capacity, which prevents it from being fouled during long-term usage. Therefore, this green, anti-corrosive, and self-cleaning LEESM offers insights into the design and fabrication of advanced membranes for practical oily wastewater remediation, as well as the developing and utilization of bio-wastes.

A microdots array-based fluoremetric assay with superwettability profile for simultaneous and separate analysis of iron and copper in red wine

Chenchen Xu,Qingqing Liu,Su Chu,Pan Li,Fengxiang Wang,Yanmei Si,Guojiang Mao,Choufei Wu,Hua Wang

A microdots array-based fluoremetric method with superwettability profile has been developed for the simultaneous and separate detection of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ ions in red wine samples. A wettable micropores array was initially designed with high density by using polyacrylic acid (PAA) and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDS), followed by the NaOH etching route. Zinc metal organic frameworks (Zn-MOFs) were fabricated as the fluorescent probes to be immobilized into the micropores array to obtain the fluoremetric microdots array platform. It was found that the fluorescence of Zn-MOFs probes could decrease significantly in the presence of Fe 3+ and/or Cu 2+ ions towards their simultaneous analysis. Yet, the specific responses to Fe 3+ ions could be expected if using histidine to chelate Cu 2+ ions. Moreover, the developed Zn-MOFs-based microdots array with superwettability profile can enable the accumulation of targeting ions from the complicated samples without any tedious pre-processing. Also, the cross-contamination of different samples droplets can be largely avoided so as to facilitate the analysis of multiple samples. Subsequently, the feasibility of simultaneous and separate detection of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ ions in red wine samples was demonstrated. Such a design of microdots array-based detection platform may promise the wide applications in analyzing Fe 3+ and/or Cu 2+ ions in the fields of food safety, environmental monitoring, and medical diseases diagnostics.

Yali Yao,Jinmei He,Xuedan Zhu,Leihuan Mu,Jiehui Li,Kanshe Li,Mengnan Qu

Rationally designing cost-efficient, high-activity and durable electrocatalysts are used for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is sense to solve the energy crisis and conversion. Herein, the heterostructure superwetting Co–MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 -GO/NF electrode is successfully fabricated by a typical hydrothermal reaction and it's electrocatalytic performance is also systematically studied. Thanks to the establishment of Co doped MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 heterojunction , the improvement conductivity by the addition of graphene oxide (GO), and the superhydrophilicity and superaerophobicity of microstructure, the electrode shows excellent catalytic characteristics and only need an overpotential of 123 mV for OER and 161 mV for HER to reach 10 mA cm −2 and can work steadily for 15 h in alkaline solution. Remarkebly, the superwetting heterojunction electrode demonstrated excellent overall water decomposition ability when used as bifunctional electrocatalyst in 1.0 M KOH and only 1.47 V is required to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show the constructed heterogeneous interface and Co doping are conducive to optimizing the chemisorption energy of hydrogen-containing intermediates. This work provides a new way of thinking that collaborative optimization of electrode structure and surface wettability regulation to increase the active area of reaction and accelerate the bubble release toward high-performance OER and HER electrodes .

All cellulose-based superwetting aerogel/wood composite with disordered/ordered pores structure for rapid emulsion separation

Kai Wu,Xuejie Yue,Siyu Wu,Xiaoming Peng,Tao Zhang,Fengxian Qiu

Rapid and efficient separation of oil from emulsions is critically required prior to addressing the global challenge of oily sewage, but most separation membranes encounter intractable challenges in terms of the trade-off effect between separation efficiency and flux, as well as the use of petrochemical feedstocks. Herein, an all-biomass wood/aerogel composite with a disordered/ordered structure was constructed by filling cellulose nanofibers aerogel into the intertubular cavities of delignified wood using cotton and wood as building blocks through a series of processes, including casting, regeneration, and freeze-drying. The parallel channels of wood and the porous structure of aerogel constitute the special disordered/ordered pores structure, which accelerates vertically oriented permeation and enhances emulsified droplets coalescence for demulsification. In addition, the aerogel/wood composite retains the inherent hydrophilicity of cellulose and exhibites excellent underwater superoleophobicity with an underwater oil contact angle of 159.6°, which is chemically stable and salt resistant. The unique disordered/ordered structure and superwettability of the aerogel/wood composite contribute to its exceptional separation efficiency (99.25 %) and high flux (2580 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) for the separation of oil-in-water emulsions when driven only by gravity. Additionally, the composite shows good utility and ease of cycling. These outstanding properties highlight its promising practical application in the oil-related industry.

In situ reversible underwater superwetting transition by electrochemical atomic alternation

Wang Qianbin,Xu Bojie,Hao Qing,Wang Dong,Liu Huan,Jiang Lei

Materials with in situ reversible wettability have attractive properties but remain a challenge to use since the inverse process of liquid spreading is normally energetically unfavorable. Here, we propose a general electrochemical strategy that enables the in situ reversible superwetting transition between underwater superoleophilicity and superoleophobicity by constructing a binary textured surface. Taking the copper/tin system as an example, the surface energy of the copper electrode can be lowered significantly by electrodeposited tin, and be brought back to the initial high-energy state as a result of dissolving tin by removing the potential. Tin atoms with the water depletion layer inhibit the formation of a hydrogen-bonding network, causing oil droplets to spread over the surface, while copper atoms, with a high affinity for hydroxyl groups, facilitate replacing the oil layer with the aqueous electrolyte. The concept is applicable to other systems, such as copper/lead, copper/antimony, gold/tin, gold/lead and gold/antimony, for both polar and nonpolar oils, representing a potentially useful class of switchable surfaces.

Superwetting charged copper foams with long permeation channels for ultrafast emulsion separation and surfactant removal

Jihao Zuo,Zehao Chen,Yi Zhou,Zihan Liu,Cailong Zhou,Shouping Xu,Jiang Cheng,Xiufang Wen,Pihui Pi

Although the advanced materials for oil/water separation have been developing rapidly, few studies have focused on the issues of simultaneous emulsion breaking and surfactant elimination. Herein we fabricated superwetting positively charged and negatively charged copper foams by in situ growth of Cu(OH)2 nanoneedles, accelerated the assembly of functional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) driven by electric field, and stacked them into a columnar separator with long permeation channels for ultrafast separation of oil-in-water emulsions and removal of surfactants. We proposed a separation strategy where lengthening the permeation channels of copper foams can prolong the residence time of emulsified oil droplets, which allows the copper foams to achieve both high efficiency and high flux. With superwettability, electrostatic interaction and long permeation channels, the positively charged copper foam can separate SDS-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with a separation efficiency of up to 99.64% and permeation flux of up to 22 636.56 L m−2 h−1, while the negatively charged copper foam can separate DTAC-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with a separation efficiency of up to 99.65% and permeation flux of up to 32 166.32 L m−2 h−1. More significantly, the two kinds of charged copper foams exhibited efficient removal ability toward anionic and cationic surfactants. The two superwetting charged copper foams with tunable permeation channel length could be a promising candidate for oil/water emulsion separation and surfactant removal in the laboratory and in industry.
