Materials with superwettability have attracted much research interest over the last few decades in the field of water-oil separation. Distinct from other superwetting materials, dual superlyophobic materials that have superoleophobicity in water and superhydrophobicity in oil can perform on-demand oil/water separation without requiring extra energy. However, obtaining such a dual superlyophobic membrane with multifunctionality for application in a complicated wastewater environment remains a challenge. Taking advantage of both ZnO and polydopamine , a multifunctional PDA/SC/KFs@ZnO freestanding membrane was prepared in our study. This novel material displays dual superlyophobicity and has potential application for rapid and simultaneous separation of light and heavy oil-water mixtures, oil-in-water emulsions with soluble dye, and water-in-oil emulsions, as well as a good adsorption-catalysis performance for removing soluble dyes in water under visible light . Our work presents a facial and economic method that uses natural kapok fibers to fabricate a special multifunctional superwetting membrane that is promising for future applications.

Oil/water separation becomes a research hotspot because of the frequent oil spill accidents. Although lots of separating membranes with super-wettability have been fabricated to separate oil or water from the mixtures, to separate both heavy (ρ oil > ρ water ) and light (ρ oil < ρ water ) oil/water mixtures with high efficiency and high flux is still a challenge, especially to obtain a membrane with mechanically robust nanostructures , and simultaneously anti-corrosive and self-cleaning ability. Herein, a novel titania nanostructured mesh membrane with superamphiphilicity in air, and dual superlyophobicity in liquid mediums were fabricated. Both high separation efficiency and flux of more than 99.2% and 16,954 L m −2 h −1 were obtained for both light and heavy oil/water mixtures. Importantly, the TiO 2 mesh membrane showed mechanically robust nanostructures and anti-corrosive ability, which can remain dual superlyophobicity, i.e., both underwater superoleophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity and high oil-water separating behavior even after immersion in solutions of strong acid, basic, high salty, various organic solvents , and even after being abrased and adhered by pure sands and adhesive tape, respectively. Meanwhile, TiO 2 mesh membrane had shown photocatalytic decomposition of oil and organic molecules under UV irradiation, demonstrating unique self-cleaning and anti-fouling ability of the membranes. Given so many merits of these unique membranes, it is believed to these membranes have great potentials to be used in wastewater treatment and oil spill recovery.

Herein, a catalytic mesh with unique wettability, high oil-water separation efficiency and excellent catalytic performance towards aromatic dyes was fabricated. Polypyrrole (PPy) was firstly pre-coated on pristine stainless-steel mesh (SSM) surface via cyclic voltammetry approach. Subsequently, a simple electrodeposition process was performed to prepare and anchor Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the PPy-coated SSM surface. The PPy-coated mesh with anchored AgNPs was denoted as PPy/AgNPs-coated SSM. The obtained PPy/AgNPs-coated SSM exhibited dual superlyophobic properties and were able to achieve on-demand separation to deal with various of light oil (ρ oil < ρ water ) and heavy oil (ρ oil > ρ water )-water mixtures. Importantly, benefitting from AgNPs on mesh surface, the obtained PPy/AgNPs-coated SSM exhibits exceptional catalytic activity. As proof-of-concept three typical aromatic dye molecules (methylene blue, rhodamine B and Congo red) can be effectivity degraded. Additionally, the degradation of aromatic dyes and oil-water separation were achieved simultaneously when the PPy/AgNPs-coated SSM was converted to water-removing mode. Therefore, the present work is of great significance to the development of novel oil-water filtration membranes and can open a new avenue towards the practicability of metal nanoparticle catalysts in wastewater treatment.

Separation membranes with underliquid dual superlyophobicity have recently caused widespread concern due to their switchable separation of oil–water mixtures and emulsions. However, the fabrication of the reported underliquid dual superlyophobic membranes is difficult, and the design of the underliquid dual superlyophobic surface of these membranes is challenging because of their complex surface composition. Theoretically, underliquid dual superlyophobicity is an underliquid Cassie state attainable by the synergy of the underliquid dual lyophobic surface and the construction of a high-roughness surface. Herein, we fabricated an underliquid dual superlyophobic membrane by combining underliquid dual lyophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and TiO2 nanowires. PVDF-modified TiO2 nanowire membranes with underliquid dual superlyophobicity were prepared via a simple adsorption and filtration approach. PVDF was coated onto TiO2 nanowires to form a PVDF layer with a thickness of 6 nm. The PVDF modification provided flexibility to the fragile TiO2 nanowires membrane and changed its wettability from underwater superoleophobicity/underoil superhydrophilicity to underliquid dual superlyophobicity. The PVDF-modified TiO2 nanowires membrane efficiently separated both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. The binary cooperative effect between the TiO2 nanowires and the coated PVDF layer was responsible for the underliquid dual superlyophobicity.

Transparent omniphobic coatings have attracted extensive research over the past decade to meet growing application demands. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based anti-fouling coatings have been widely reported to contribute a liquid-like surface for liquid repellency. The bulky PDMS chains usually make the surface greasy and energy-consuming. Fluorinated epoxy is expected to overcome the above drawbacks and contribute to excellent mechanical robustness. However, the reported fluorinated epoxy coatings are unsatisfactory due to severe phase separation, excessive fluorine content, poor self-healing and weatherability. In this work, a thiolactone-terminated fluorinated prepolymer (TTFP) was prepared through thiol-click chemistry. The thiolactone structure limited the phase separation and reacted efficiently with epoxy resin in a thiol-click manner after ring-opening. The flexible TTFP molecules had a strong surface migration ability, allowing the product coating to be liquid repellent with a low fluorine content and self-healed after damage. Therefore, a low-cost, eco-friendly, anti-ultraviolet, self-healed, highly transparent, mechanically robust and chemically resistant fluorinated epoxy coating was proposed. In addition to the excellent repellency to ink traces, fingerprints and thick paint, the coating with 5H pencil hardness could maintain omniphobic properties after 100 h of intensive UV irradiation or 12 h of alkali corrosion. Benefiting from the strong surface migration ability of flexible fluoroalkyl chains, the coating could recover its omniphobicity within 30 min of heating. The characterization results show the excellent comprehensive properties of the coating and its great potential for application in various scenarios.

Super-wettable membranes have been extensively investigated due to their prospective applications in oily wastewater remediation. However, it is still a big challenge to develop super-wettable membranes via a facile and rationally designed method. In this work, we proposed a novel strategy to develop wetting-induced superlyophobic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes with reversible wettability via in situ cross-linking polymerization and surface immobilization of nanoparticles during phase inversion process. The resulting membranes exhibited super-amphilic property in air, and were capable of converting their wetting behavior from underwater superoleophobicity to underoil superhydrophobicity with excellent dynamic stability. The membranes also displayed outstanding separation capability toward various surfactant-stabilized emulsions with separation efficiencies exceeding 99.2% under gravity. Moreover, the membranes could be regenerated with high performance preserved using a facile rinsing-and-drying method, and could be repeatedly applied to separate surfactant-stabilized emulsions. This work has made progress in the fabrication of super-amphiphilic membranes with superior separating performance through a facile method, providing great potential in practical application for oily wastewater treatment .

Materials of under-liquids (water/oil) dual super-lyophobicity require special micro/nano morphology. However, such material surfaces are mechanically weak and readily worn, which restricts their practical applications. Herein, we report a robust self-similar under-liquid dual super-lyophobicity anti-fouling cement which demonstrates stable underwater super-oleophobicity ( θ o/w > 150°) and under oil super-hydrophobicity ( θ w/o > 150°) via a simply mixed cement and water, without other organic reagents and professional preparation technology. The obtained material not only owns good under-liquids mechanical robustness but also has very excellent anti-fouling property. This surface material still has the anti-oil-fouling property once its surface is mechanically damaged, due to its surface self-similar functionality. Importantly, the surface maintained their excellent super-lyophobic functionality due to the similar property after turbulent jets (5 m range), abrasive belt wear, blade cutting (transverse cutting), highly-viscous tape peeling (VHB, 3 M), and ASTM standard adhesion (scratch spacing and cutting spacing). Cement could separate from oil/water mixtures, the separation efficiency for oil was above 97.5% at 30 cycles. Our study provides an eco-friendly, green, simple, low-cost, and easily mass-produced strategy to the fabrication of super-lyophobic materials in oil/water systems dual functional materials , which will benefit applications in diverse fields.

Multifunctional materials for the simultaneous separation of oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions and adsorption of heavy metal ions are urgently needed for treating industrial wastewater with complex composition; however, at present these materials are strictly limited to a single function. To meet the above demand, a 3D polystyrene–divinylbenzene–trimethylolpropane triacrylate/polyethyleneimine (P(St-D-T)/PEI 20 ) porous material with underliquid dual superlyophobicity was designed and prepared by the high internal phase emulsion polymerization one-pot method. Based on a structural design strategy involving the combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments, hydrophilic and cationic PEI components were chemically grafted onto the surface of the hydrophobic P(St-D-T) porous material through a 1,4-conjugate addition reaction, endowing the material with underliquid dual superlyophobicity and metal ion-chelating coordination groups. The as-prepared material could continuously separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, with corresponding separation efficiencies of 99.4 % and 97.4 %, along with separation fluxes of 2543 and 8363 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 , respectively. The material also possessed excellent mechanical stability and outstanding chemical corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the P(St-D-T)/PEI 20 porous material could adsorb Cu 2+ in water through metal ion chelation, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 190.2 mg/g. This study provides a new approach to prepare a porous material with underliquid dual superlyophobicity for the treatment of complex oily wastewater.

The smart membrane with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity, which can achieve on-demand separation of oil/water emulsions only by simple liquid pre-wetting, is of essential value for the treatment of complicated real oil/water systems. Here, we first fabricated a stable suspension of imine-linked covalent organic framework nanospheres (TPB-DMTP-COF), and subsequently fabricated COF functionalized smart membranes with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity by immersing polyacrylonitrile-based (PAN-based) membranes into TPB-DMTP-COF nanosphere suspension. Accordingly, effective switchable separation of both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions by TPB-DMTP-COF/PAN membranes can be achieved by employing pre-wetting processes (both the oil contact angle under water and the water contact angle under oil are over 150°). Specifically, the separation flux and the separation efficiency are higher than 1200 L/m 2 ‧h and 98.0 %, and 2100 L/m 2 ‧h and 97.4 % for the surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, respectively. Furthermore, the ultralow adhesions in liquid contributed to the outstanding reusability and antifouling resistance of the prepared TPB-DMTP-COF/PAN membranes. This work provides a feasible approach for fabricating a smart membrane with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity for oily wastewater treatment .

Separation membranes with under-liquid dual-superlyophobicity have attractive features owing to their switchable separation of oil/water emulsions and mixtures. However, due to the thermodynamic contradiction, there are great challenges in the preparation of underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic membranes. Herein, we report a bioinspired accurate-deposition strategy to fabricate the under-liquid dual-superlyphobic polypropylene melt blown (PPMB) membrane integrated with photocatalysis self-cleaning property. For the first time, we found that UV oxidized gallic acid (UGA) can react with polyethyleneimine (PEI) rapidly to form unique coral-like three-dimensional micro-/nanoscale structures, which have a vital effect on the membrane under-liquid dual-superlyophobicity. Meanwhile, using UGA/PEI coating as an intermediate adhesive layer, a novel, green and fast coating method for tightly anchoring titanate nanotubes (TNTs) on the PPMB membranes was developed. Only driven by gravity, the membrane showed extraordinary ability for switchable oil/water mixtures separation with high fluxes above 12,000 L m −2 h −1 , and high separation efficiencies all greater than 99.9%. For switchable separation of emulsions, the as-prepared membrane still performed a high permeating flux above 2500 L m −2 h −1 under gravity. Moreover, when the membrane was fouled by continuous surfactant-stabilized emulsions, the photocatalysis self-cleaning property made the regeneration of the membrane green and environmentally friendly.

Surfaces exhibiting under-liquid dual superlyophobicity (combined underwater superoleophobicity and underoil superhydrophobicity) hold immense potential for intelligent oil/water separation systems, yet their realization remains thermodynamically constrained. Herein, we proposed an interfacial hydrophilic/hydrophobic chain regulation strategy that synergistically constructed an under-liquid dual superlyophobicity coating via integrating dynamic interfacial chain reorganization with multiscale structural. By programmatically regulating hydrophobic chain lengths in amphiphilic molecules, precise control over the adaptive conformational switching of self-assembled monolayers on hierarchically nanostructured substrates was achieved to tune membrane macroscopic wettability. The coating exhibits reversible wettability transitions between underoil superhydrophobic and underwater superoleophobicity, which is consistent with the dynamic molecular reconfiguration of environment-responsive molecular chains. Consequently, the coated-porous membrane, with under-liquid dual superlyophobicity, exhibits over 99 % separation efficiency for light/heavy oil/water mixtures and emulsions, especially in long-term on-demand separation of emulsions. This practical and simple strategy provides a versatile platform for developing smart materials for on-demand treatment of complex oily wastewater.
