2D stacking presents a promising avenue for creating periodic superstructures that unveil novel physical phenomena. While extensive research has focused on lateral 2D material superstructures formed through composition modulation and twisted moiré structures, the exploration of vertical periodicity in 2D material superstructures remains limited. Although weak van der Waals interfaces enable layer-by-layer vertical stacking, traditional methods struggle to control in-plane crystal orientation over large areas, and the vertical dimension is constrained by unscalable, low-throughput processes, preventing the achievement of global order structures. In this study, a supercell multiplying approach is introduced that enables high-throughput construction of 3D superstructures on a macroscopic scale, utilizing artificially stacked single-crystalline 2D multilayers as foundational repeating units. By employing wafer-scale single-crystalline 2D materials and referencing the crystal orientation of substrates, the method ensures precise alignment of crystal orientation within and across each supercell, thereby achieving controllable periodicity along all three axes. A centimeter-scale 3R-MoS₂ crystal is successfully constructed, comprising over 200 monolayers of single-crystalline MoS₂, through a bottom-up stacking process. Additionally, the approach accommodates the integration of amorphous oxide, enabling the assembly of 3D non-linear optical crystals with quasi-phase matching. This method paves the way for the bottom-up construction of macroscopic artificial 3D crystals with atomic plane precision, enabling tailored optical, electrical, and thermal properties and advancing the development of novel artificial materials and high-performance applications.

The robustness and stability of self-assembled colloidal suprastructures are pivotal and challenging in the field of soft condensed matter and nanotechnology. Herein, we develop a novel approach to “self-locking” the colloidal suprastructures to achieve excellent stability by taking advantage of the topology of polymer brushes on nanoparticles. Compared to linear polymer brushes, looped polymer brushes can significantly improve the structural stability of the suprastructures. A combination of experiments and simulations reveals that the suprastructures achieve their significant stabilities through a “self-locking” mechanism by forming folded entanglement between looped polymer molecules. The stabilized suprastructures can stay intact in various organic solvent environments or under heating and mechanical oscillations. Furthermore, the interparticle spacing of suprastructures can be modulated by controlling polymer conformations in an aqueous solution through varying salt concentrations. This new approach of “self-locking” provides an easy-to-operate strategy to stabilize suprastructures and modulate interparticle distances without adding chemicals, which allows the potentially wide applications of colloidal suprastructures under harsh environments.

Superstructures from fullerene C60-containing compounds, especially those tethered to rigid functional groups with defined shapes, remain largely unexplored. Being the smallest diamondoid, adamantane (Ad) can be viewed as a promising building block for the construction of well-defined superstructures. Here, we report the syntheses of 1 : 1 (4a) and 2 : 1 (4b) Ad-C60 hybrid molecules, which were then used to construct superstructures in binary solvent mixtures via a modified liquid/liquid interfacial precipitation (LLIP) method using CHCl3 as a good solvent. Typically in the combination of DMSO/CHCl3 with a final concentration (cf) of 1.0 mmol L−1, 4a successively forms spheres, plates, nanoflowers and plicated particles with increasing content of DMSO while 4b forms cuboid blocks and microparticles with hierarchically organized surfaces. Changing from DMSO to other poor solvents including acetone, MeOH and EtOAc leads to variations of the morphology of the superstructures for both 4a and 4b. At the nanometer length scale, 4a and 4b adopt different organizations within the superstructures. While 4a tends to self-organize into lamellae with highly ordered C60 layers, the hexagonal phase is dominant in the superstructures formed by 4b. Wettability tests indicate that films formed by the superstructures of 4a and 4b show anti-wetting properties. Besides the solvent effect, the morphology of the superstructures can be also tuned by concentration. For example, when cf is lowered to 0.5 mmol L−1, a new form of superstructure, i.e., fibers, was detected for 4a. Our results also indicate that besides the solvent-induced aggregate transition, gravity-induced sedimentation and subsequent structure ripening can have a significant influence on the final morphology of the superstructures and the aggregate transition pathways.

Synthesis of anisotropic carbonaceous nano- and micro-materials with well-ordered mesoporous structures has attracted increasing attention for a broad scope of applications. Although hard-templating method has been widely employed, overcoming the viscous forces to prepare anisotropic mesoporous materials is particularly challenging via the universal soft-templating method, especially from sustainable biomass as a carbon resource. Herein, the synthesis of biomass-derived nanowire-arrays based mesoporous nanorods and teeth-like superstructures is reported, through a simple and straightforward polyelectrolyte assisted soft-templating hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) approach. A surface energy induced interfacial assembly mechanism with the synergetic interactions between micelles, nanowire, nanorods, and polyelectrolyte is proposed. The polyelectrolyte acts not only as a stabilizer to decrease the surface energy of cylindrical micelles, nanowires and nanorods, but also as a structure-directing agent to regulate the oriented attachment and anisotropic assembly of micelles, nanowires, and nanorods. After a calcination treatment, the carbon nanorod and teeth-like superstructure are successfully coupled with Ru to directly produce supported catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction, exhibiting much better performance than the isotropic nanospheres based catalyst. This HTC approach will open up new avenues for the synthesis of anisotropic materials with various morphologies and dimensions, expanding the palette of materials selection for many applications.

This paper reports a strategy to get self-assembly of Cu7Te5 nanorods into hierarchical superstructures: the side-by-side self-assembly of nanorods into microscale one-dimensional (1D) nanowires (primary structure), the side-by-side alignments of the 1D nanowires into two-dimensional (2D) nanowire bundles (secondary structure), and the further rolling up of the 2D bundles into three-dimensional (3D) microtubes (tertiary structure). It was found that the oleylamine (OLA)/n-dodecanethiol (DDT) mixture as a binary capping agent was key to produce Cu7Te5 nanorods in the quantum size regime with high monodispersity, and this was a prerequisite for their hierarchical self-assembly based on elaborate control of the solvent evaporation process. The obtained Cu7Te5 microtube superstructures were used as SERS substrate and showed much stronger SERS enhancement than the as-prepared Cu7Te5 nanorods before assembly. This was probably ascribed to the remarkably enhanced local electromagnetic field arising from the plasmon coupling of Cu7Te5 nanorods in the well-assembled superstructures.

Metal sulfide/carbon superstructures are a new class of functional materials for various energy applications due to their strong synergistic effect and favorable geometry. However, developing a controllable way to synthesize metal sulfide/Carbon superstructures with high N doping , well-designed 3D superstructure and refined metal sulfide nanoparticles remains a big challenge. Herein, we report a one-pot synthesis of metal sulfide/carbon flower-like superstructures (M x S y /CFSs) by using metal ion doped polyimine. The morphology of polyimine can be easily tuned by choosing different solvents or different amino monomers . The presence of imine bond and thiophene in polyimine not only can coordinates with metal ion and transforms them into metal sulfide during carbonization , but also provides high N and S doping for the M x S y /CFSs. Benefiting from the advantages of these structures, multiple M x S y /CFSs (such as FeS/CFSs, Co 9 S 8 /CFSs, Ni 3 S 2 /CFSs, and MnS/CFSs) with high N doping , uniform metal sulfide nanoparticles and hierarchical superstructures were fabricated by directly carbonizing metal ion doped polyimine flower-like superstructures in nitrogen atmosphere. The as-prepared Co 9 S 8 /CFSs exhibits superior sodium storage properties with stable cycling performance and excellent rate capacity. This new finding provides a novel strategy to controllably design and produce metal sulfide/carbon flower-like superstructures for the applications in energy storage.

Assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) is of crucial importance for the construction of functional materials and devices. Although tremendous progress has been made in constructing various types of superlattices, it is still difficult to elucidate the assembly mechanism at the molecular/atomic level, because the surface ligands and interactions cannot be seen by electron microscopy. To tackle this, we adopt an atomically precise nanochemistry approach and demonstrate with oblate [Au 31 Cu 32 (SPh t Bu) 34 (P(SC 4 H 3 ) 3 ) 8 ] + nanoclusters (NCs) which can self-assemble into both template-free spherical superstructures upon fast evaporation and single crystals via slow non-solvent diffusion. The size of the assembled solid nanospheres (∼300 nm) can be controlled by the amount of n -hexane (non-solvent) added to the Au 31 Cu 32 solution. On the other hand, adding a second solvent of lower vapor pressure leads to hollow nanospheres (∼380 nm) instead of solid ones. These self-assembly processes are reversible. By contrast, single crystals can be grown by slowly diffusing n -hexane into the Au 31 Cu 32 solution, and subsequent X-ray analysis reveals the details of ligand interactions, that is, each oblate Au 31 Cu 32 coordinates with the closest ones via two types of ligand interactions: (1) between the thiolates along the polar axis, and (2) between the phosphines in the equatorial plane. This indicates that anisotropic van der Waals forces can drive the formation of template-free nanospheres of Au 31 Cu 32 NCs. The results from this work also sheds light on the superstructure formation for conventional NPs.

The development of low-cost and high active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for the sustainable energy and environment. Here we report a hydrothermal method to prepare ZnS@MoS 2 nanosheets with hydrangea-like superstructure for enhanced HER. Benefiting from their abundant edge sites and facilitated charge transfer, the ZnS@MoS 2 exhibited excellent HER performance with low overpotential of 106 mV and small Tafel slope of 73 mV dec −1 . In addition, the chronoamperometry measurement results suggested the well-remained current density for 36 h without significant change, which indicated the excellent stability of ZnS@MoS 2 superstructure. This work not only provides an effective method for constructing hierarchical heterojunctions, but also gives us a multi-scale strategy for the regulation of metal-based nanomaterials’ structure in energy-related applications.

The efficiency of heterogeneous photocatalysis for converting solar to chemical energy is low on a per photon basis mainly because of the difficulty of capturing and utilizing light across the entire solar spectral wavelength range. This challenge is addressed herein with a plasmonic superstructure, fashioned as an array of nanoscale needles comprising cobalt nanocrystals assembled within a sheath of porous silica grown on a fluorine tin oxide substrate. This plasmonic superstructure can strongly absorb sunlight through different mechanisms including enhanced plasmonic excitation by the hybridization of Co nanoparticles in close proximity, as well as inter- and intra-band transitions. With nearly 100% sunlight harvesting ability, it drives the photothermal hydrogenation of carbon dioxide with a 20-fold rate increase from the silica-supported cobalt catalyst. The present work bridges the gap between strong light-absorbing plasmonic superstructures with photothermal CO 2 catalysis toward the complete utilization of the solar energy.

Carbon materials have been widely recognized as one of the important candidates for superior microwave absorbers, but further enhancement of their properties (especially for a wide bandwidth) is still a great challenge. In this study, we developed a simple soft template-carbonization method to construct special shell-like carbon superstructures used for significant enhancement of microwave absorption. Through an interfacial self-assembly process using ribose as the carbon precursor, a copolymer as the soft template, and sulfuric acid as the catalyst, three microstructurally distinct carbon materials: sphere-like, rod-like, and shell-like carbon superstructures can be prepared by simply adjusting the amount of the structure-guiding agent PSSMA. Owing to the unique semi-hollow cavity structure of the shell-like carbon superstructures, the conductive loss and polarization loss are synergistically regulated, accompanied by the synergistic improvement of their impedance matching and loss capability. As a result, the shell-like carbon superstructures hold excellent electromagnetic wave absorption capability, in which the reflection loss (RL) can reach −49.14 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) can reach 8.24 GHz. The relationships between the morphological structure, microscopic loss mechanism, and macroscopic microwave absorption performance are also investigated in detail. In addition, under far-field conditions, the shell-like carbon superstructures are characterized by a high degree of conductivity and polarization loss compared with PEC. Besides, the maximum radar cross-section (RCS) reduction of shell-like carbon superstructures reaches 31.19 dB m2 compared with PEC under far-field conditions, which again verifies that shell-like carbon superstructures can dissipate more electromagnetic waves in real environments. This work provides a reference for the rational construction of new high-performance carbon superstructure microwave absorbers.

Evaporative self-assembly of noble metal nanoparticles into ordered structures holds great promise for fabricating optical and plasmonic devices by virtue of its low cost, high efficiency, and ease of operation. However, poor control of Marangoni flows is one of the challenges accounting for realizing a well-defined assembly. Herein, based on the theoretical analysis of the influence of evaporative intensity on the assembly, two simple but reliable flow-field-confinement platforms are designed to control the evaporative microflows and to work concurrently with depletion forces to enable the regulated self-assembly of gold nanorods. Orientationally ordered assemblies are realized by the designed strong unidirectional microflow in a capillary, and a device-scale assembly of monolayer membrane is obtained by the created weak convection in homemade glass cells. Morphologically diversified superstructure assemblies, such as spherulite-like, boundary-twisted, chiral spiral assemblies, and merging membranes with a π-twisted domain wall, are obtained due to the spontaneous symmetry breaking or in the presence of defects, such as surface steps and screw dislocations. Optical anisotropy and polarization-dependent behaviors of these assemblies are further revealed, implying the potential applications in plasmonic coupling devices and optoelectronic components. An understanding of the entropy-driven assembly behaviors and control of evaporative microflows to guide the self-assembly of gold nanorods provides insights into the general bottom-up approach that is helpful for constructing complex yet robust nanosuperstructures.

Fullerene assembling with specific donor molecules would yield multifunctional metamaterials via the collective behavior, wherein linear acenes are widely used as donor molecules to construct the charge-transfer heterojunction structure with fullerene. However, they are generally prepared by vacuum deposition due to the insoluble property of high-performance linear acenes molecules in common solvents, which makes the construction of fullerene with insoluble donor molecules still be a big challenge in the solution-processed method. To this end, chemical modification provides an effective solution-processed strategy to construct donor and acceptor systems. Here, the C 60 -pentacene is assembled into controllable flower-like superstructures by the surface grafting method. It is found that the nanofeatures of the microflowers could be regulated by temperature, resulting in dense-flakes morphology at room temperature and loose flakes at high temperatures. Furthermore, the dense-flakes microflowers structures with less mass but better crystalline structure exhibit better optoelectronic properties. Our results reveal an effective control on the nanofeatures of the self-assembled fullerenes complex superstructures and their role for the optoelectronic performance, which may promote the exploring of fullerene superstructures as photodetectors.
