The membrane fouling from oils, soluble organic matters, and microorganism is inevitable in practical application of oil/water separation, which easily causes the decline in flux and service life of membrane. Therefore, developing the advanced separation membrane with high flux and anti-fouling feature is still a big challenge. Herein, we report a facile strategy to prepare the multifunctional [email protected] /PEN fibrous composite membrane by the self-assembly of [email protected] hybrid on electrospun poly (arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) porous support. In the hierarchical skin layer of fibrous composite membrane, the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were anchored onto the MXene surface via the self-reduction of silver nitrate, in which the MXene acted as reductant. Meanwhile, the [email protected] hybrid was stabilized and modified by the bio-inspired dopamine triggered crosslinking with polyethyleneimine. Because of regulated interlayer spacing, super-hydrophilic property, and porous supporting layer, the [email protected] /PEN fibrous composite membrane exhibited the ultra-high permeance (up to 11957.5 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) for different oil–water emulsions while maintaining high-level rejection rate (99.13%), which was far beyond other MXene-based composite membranes reported before. Moreover, the fibrous composite membrane showed the satisfactory photocatalytic degradation rates for the methyl orange (15 ppm, 95.24%) and crystal violet (15 ppm, 95.61%) in 60 min, demonstrating the photocatalytic self-cleaning ability for organic pollutants. In addition, the fibrous composite membrane exhibited ∼ 99.99% E. coli growth inhibition, achieving the favorable antibacterial effect. Therefore, the low oil adhesion, photocatalytic self-cleaning, and antibacterial effect contributed to the synergistically enhanced anti-fouling, which enabled the membrane material to maintain high separation efficiency and long-term usage in complex multi-pollutant environments. The combination of high permeability and enhanced anti-fouling performance makes the fibrous composite membrane an ideal candidate for the fast purification of emulsified oily wastewater.

Low-dimensional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted substantial research interest in the field of water treatment. However, the simultaneous realization of ultra-high flux and precise molecular sieving remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report a novel one-dimensional (1D) Ni-MOF nanowires via a solvothermal method. By systematically tuning the reaction temperature, Ni-MOF nanostructures with distinct dimensionalities − including nanosheets (NSs), nanoneedles (NNs), and nanowires (NWs) were successfully prepared. Notably, the Ni-MOF NWs exhibited an exceptional adsorption capacity of 567 mg·g −1 for Brilliant Blue (B.B.), while demonstrating negligible adsorption towards Acid Red 18 (A.R.18). This selective adsorption was attributed to preferential hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions. Benefiting from their high specific surface area and hierarchical porosity, the Ni-MOF NWs were deposited onto cellulose acetate substrates to fabricate membranes with tunable thickness. The optimized 3.0 μm-thick membrane achieved a superior water permeance of 250 LMH·bar −1 and nearly complete (∼ 100 %) rejection of B.B., while allowing A.R.18 to pass through unimpeded. The results of molecular simulation showed that the stacked nanochannels by 1D Ni-MOF NWs and the strong coordination effect within the Ni-MOF NWs membrane enhanced the dyes separation effect and rejection. Moreover, the membrane maintained 100 % B.B. removal efficiency over 10 regeneration cycles and exhibited an effective antifouling ability, underscoring its outstanding operational stability and recyclability. This work not only introduces a scalable strategy for constructing low-dimensional MOF-based membranes but also offers a promising solution for energy-efficient, high-throughput treatment of dye-containing wastewater.

The increasing environmental concerns arising from industrial oily wastewater and offshore oil spills necessitate the development of efficient, durable, and cost-effective oil-water separation technologies. This study fabricated a novel superhydrophobic nonwoven polyester (NWP) membrane using eco-friendly sol-gel and phase inversion methods. The membrane was engineered by integrating polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and vinyltris(2-methoxyethoxy)silane (VTMEOS), forming a robust and highly porous composite material. The unique hierarchical structure exhibited exceptional hydrophobicity, with a water contact angle exceeding 150°, and demonstrated remarkable mechanical and chemical stability across a pH range of 1–13. When tested in a custom-built low-pressure (0.02 MPa) filtration device, the hydrophobic membrane achieved an ultra-high flux rate of 19,400 Lm −2 h −1 and a separation efficiency of 99.9 % over 70 cycles. The membrane's porosity (87.17 %) and finely controlled pore size distribution (0.4–1.8 μm) significantly contributed to its enhanced separation performance. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further validated the chemical interactions underlying the surface modification and hydrophobic behavior. This study presents a scalable and energy-efficient membrane system, which offers a promising platform for next-generation oil-water separation in environmental remediation.
